Composing For A Singer: The Vocal Qualities Of Adriana Ferrarese Del Bene Exemplified Through Four Mozart Arias, Emily Davis

Adriana Ferrarese del Bene played Susanna in the 1789 revival of Le Nozze di Figaro in Vienna, for which Mozart rewrote both arias sung by the character. She later became the soprano who premiered the role of Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte. In both instances, Mozart carefully considered the vocal abilities of Ferrarese when composing the arias for Susanna and Fiordiligi, including Ferrarese's powerful chest voice, ability to negotiate large leaps, and agility. Through melodic analysis of the four arias Mozart wrote specifically for her voice, an understanding of Mozart's ideal sound is apparent. Musical examples from each of …

Seeing Double: A Diplopic Aesthetic In Experience And Performance, Samuel S. Sloan

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This investigation uses an autoethnographic approach to investigate the author’s personal, phenomenological experience of living with diplopia (double vision) in order to apply the lived condition to an aesthetic form in performance. Using Petra Kuppers’s notion of a “crip aesthetic,” this piece refunctions a potential aspect of disability, the condition of diplopia, as a way of opening up discourses of multiplicity in art and performance. The author also calls for others to integrate non-normative body states into their art praxis.

This dissertation seeks to address the societal problems associated with alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency in relationship to problematic depictions that have appeared on the American stage. It examines plays that perpetuate stigmas as well as plays that seek to subvert stigmas and stereotypical depictions as a means of creating avenues for discourse. This study asks how we, as practitioners of the theatre, can use the theatre and the act of storytelling to initiate empathy and compassion toward what is still considered a marginalized topic of discussion. Assessment of agricultural extension education efforts in Afghanistan was conducted through a qualitative case study of eight U.S. support personnel serving in the country. Security & access and provincial diversity were two overriding factors which determined how the three key attributes of assessment, content and process (Barrick et al., 2009) were able to function in an Afghan agricultural extension education program. Respondents indicated training should focus on young farmers and local farm demonstration sites should be essential program components. Respondents stressed recruitment of agents from local districts when this would not imperil the agents or their families. Respondents also insisted …

Devising is a collaborative method of experimental theatre production that seeks to decenter traditional power structures. Posthumanism is a philosophical lens that uses postmodern ideology to critique and expand Humanist convictions. Cybernetic Fruit: A Posthuman Fairytale was a cast performance that deployed devising methodologies in order to stage posthumanist research. This essay examines Cybernetic Fruit in order to reveal unique processes, question authorship, and articulate the connections between posthumanism and devising.

The Performance Cult Of The Room: Embodied Audiencing And Movie Riffing As Shared Sense-Making, Matt Foy

This ethnographic study explores everyday cultural performance and embodied audiencing practices at a performance-centered midnight screening of the 2003 cult film The Room.

Prior to attending and co-performing the film’s group audiencing ritual, the author explores fan appropriation of the previously obscure film and fan-generated and circulated performance scripts. Drawing on thick description and bodily knowledge gained from attending and performing The Room’s audiencing ritual, the author explores how the ritual’s scripts are embraced, embellished, and deviated from while critiquing problematic aspects of the ritual.

This research focuses on the tangibility three-dimensional stop-motion animation allows in its authorial process, and on the tactility and materiality it evokes on the other side of the screen. Based on these assumptions, I seek to demonstrate how the sense of touch is evoked by the tactility of materials used in three-dimensional stop-motion animation, by drawing on the concepts of fabrication (Wells, 1998), haptic visuality (Marks, 2002), tactile image (Barker, 2009), and on the embodied viewer’s experience as defined by Vivian Sobchack (1992; 2004). In the United States, regional sports networks broadcast games of home teams to audiences in specific communities, or geographical areas. Ownership of regional sports network by sports teams presents a unique type of vertical integration. Regional sports networks use distinctive programming to connect to local sports culture. This dissertation explores the historical significance of New England Sports Network (NESN), a team created, owned and operated regional sports network, which broadcasts Boston Red Sox baseball games and Boston Bruins hockey games throughout the New England region. When searching for appropriate literature for any choral group, there are many considerations to take into account: the musical abilities of the singers, the type of accompaniment, the vocal ranges and tessitura in the parts, the language of the text, etc. One primary consideration would be the divisi or number of parts within a piece, which can sometimes be a good measure of the piece’s difficulty. In this dissertation, I outline a theoretical justification for a new world systems analysis in order to understand economic development and underdevelopment, and stratification systems that emerge within nation states because of their global social location. I present my detailed case for amending Wallerstein's World-Systems Analysis by empirically incorporating the interplay of the military, economy and state as opposed to his primarily economic division of labor that defines the core, periphery and semi periphery. Takarazuka For The Family: Japanese All-Women’S Musical Theater And Traditional Gender Perceptions, Kay Satoh

Takarazuka, the Japanese all-female musical theater troupe has been inspiring Japanese audiences since 1913, when it first began as a place for training young girls to becoming ryosai kenbo, or “good wives, wise mothers.” The women are assigned either as a musumeyaku (daughter-role) or otokoyaku (male-role) when performing on stage. The founder, Ichizo Kobayashi hoped that the training through the Takarazuka Music School as well as the experience of performing male roles would strengthen the character of these young women, ultimately preparing them for marriage. Around 1930, he also created the school motto, “Kiyoku, tadashiku, utsukushiku,” meaning “[With] purity, …
