Job Burnout: The End Or A New Beginning?, Patricia J. Alsup Jr

Research Papers

Human services work entails providing services to others.  Services are personalized to meet the needs and desires of the recipient.  Providers may encounter a range of emotions, not only their own but those of the service recipient and other interested parties. Combined with increased workloads, fewer resources, and outside pressures, employees can experience job stress or burnout.  This work explores the nature of human services work and burnout and provides recommendations for further examination to aid in retaining service providers, thereby preserving continuity and quality of services.

Factors Contributing To Spectators' Perceptions Of A College Football Stadium During Its First Year, Lyle Yoder

Research Papers

The objective of the current study was to determine how predetermined factors contribute to a spectator’s overall perceptions of a new college football stadium.  It was predicted that fans who were highly identified with the SIU football team would have a more positive perception of the new stadium than low identified fans.  Second, individuals’ considering themselves to be sports fans would perceive the stadium more positively compared to those not considering themselves to be sport fans.  Third, females’ perceptions would be more positive than males.  Lastly, the greater the number of games an individual attends would result in a more …

Framing Climate Change: A Comparing Analysis Of Chinese And American Elite Newspaper’S Coverage On Climate Change During 2009 Copenhagen Summit, Zixian Gao

Research Papers

Climate change is a global issue not only about the natural environment but also international political relations. Different countries have different perspectives on mitigating climate change. The Copenhagen Summit provides a chance for studying different countries’ standpoint on climate change. This current paper did a framing study of the news reports about climate change on an elite Chinese newspaper and an elite U.S. newspaper and their view on each country. The results revealed that both the People’s Daily and the New York Times tent to cover politics and economics more than other social contexts. Renewable energy was also often discussed. …

The Transition: From College Athletics To A Post-Athletic Life, Erica Smith

The purpose of this study is to examine the transition out of college sports for student-athletes who have graduated within the last 10 years from Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). Through understanding the competitive, academic and social aspects of each these former athlete’s lives, there is a hope to understand how one’s social life experiences prepare them for their transition out of sport. Participants were selected for in-depth interviews through referrals from the SIUC athletic department (coaches, administration and staff) and from my own connections with former student-athletes. I found that all of the participants did experience some level of …

College Attendance Rational Choice: Modeling And Empirical Estimations, Sergiy Polyachenko

Research Papers

Previous findings of economic literature pointed out that there is significant correlation of family characteristics and family background with an individual’s rational choice of education. However, variable of abilities was omitted.

This study develops and estimates the model of rational choice of college attendance with respect to agent’s individual and family characteristics as well as abilities to meet college requirements.

Paper concludes significant impact of an individual’s cognitive abilities on his rational educational choice. Additional finding is that gender of individual has dual effect on his educational choice. First is negative via income mechanism. And the second is positive via …

Organizations And The Evolution Of Cooperation, Danielle F. Jung, David A. Lake Jan 2011

Organizations And The Evolution Of Cooperation, Danielle F. Jung, David A. Lake

2011

The Repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma (RPD) is a metaphor for the difficulties of achieving cooperation in social life. We present results from an agent-based model (ABM) of the RPD in which agents interact in a “market,” equivalent to the non-organizational interactions within the standard RPD, or have the option of interacting within networks, which allow agents to acquire information from other agents with whom they have been paired or to select agents with whom to interact, or hierarchies, in which cooperation is enforced by the threat of third party punishment. The ABM sheds new light on when and how organizations affect …

Network Structure, Interracial Contacts, And The Evolution Of Social Norms, David J. Hendry Jan 2011

Network Structure, Interracial Contacts, And The Evolution Of Social Norms, David J. Hendry

2011

In this paper I explore the underlying mechanisms of the changes in public discourse with respect to the issue of racial equality that have been observed in the United States over the course of its history, with a particular focus on the changes that occurred in the latter half of the twentieth century. Specifically, I provide a formal model of social interactions in which agents are assigned to non-homophilic networks, are heterogeneous with respect to preferences for equality between the races, and have preferences both to express their true preferences and to not appear deviant from the group. In a …

Networks Of Mobilization: Student Involvement In A Municipal Election, R Huckfeldt, Matthew T. Pietryka, Jack Reilly, Ronald Rapoport, Daniel M. Maliniak, Patrick Miller Jan 2011

Networks Of Mobilization: Student Involvement In A Municipal Election, R Huckfeldt, Matthew T. Pietryka, Jack Reilly, Ronald Rapoport, Daniel M. Maliniak, Patrick Miller

2011

An enduring issue in the study of political participation is the extent to which political awareness and engagement are socially or individually motivated.  We address these issues in the context of a municipal election which generated a high level of political engagement on the part of college students for whom the election was relevant.  An effort was made to interview all these students using an on-line survey, and the students were asked to provide information on their friendship networks.  The paper demonstrates that awareness and engagement are not simply a consequence of individually defined interests and awareness, but rather that …

The Triad That Binds: Financial Analysts And Board Interlocks, Sun Hyun Park Jan 2011

The Triad That Binds: Financial Analysts And Board Interlocks, Sun Hyun Park

2011

This study explores the structural embeddedness of board interlocks in financial analysts’ firm coverage ties. Drawing on the theories of triangular ties, I conceptualize the relationship between financial analysts, a focal CEO, and the interlock director as a triad and examine how the positivity or negativity of analyst stock recommendations regarding the focal firm CEO and the interlock directors influence the maintenance of the board interlock ties. The theoretical perspectives and empirical findings of this study suggest that a structural shift from open to closed triad, where the focal firm CEO and the interlock director are followed by a common …
