Domestic Violence Advocacy In The Rural Context And Discourses Of Gender And Sexuality Related To Domestic Violence Victims And Perpetrators, Sarah Pitcher Jan 2012

Domestic Violence Advocacy In The Rural Context And Discourses Of Gender And Sexuality Related To Domestic Violence Victims And Perpetrators, Sarah Pitcher

Research Papers

This project explores domestic violence advocacy in a rural setting, using a critical feminist-informed social constructionist approach. Analysis considers how the rural context specifically affects advocacy work, victims’ experiences, and perceptions of domestic violence victims and ultimately aims to give voice to the experiences of advocates and domestic violence victims located within the cultural and social context of a rural area. Analysis also focuses on discourses that arise within the interviews related to gender and sexuality, most often surrounding the victims but also related to abusers. Results indicate that the rural context affects advocacy and the experiences of domestic violence …

Why Gender Matters: A Partial Test Of Travis Hirschi's Element Of Attachment, Danielle Ashley Rios Ms. Jan 2012

Why Gender Matters: A Partial Test Of Travis Hirschi's Element Of Attachment, Danielle Ashley Rios Ms.

Research Papers

Recent studies have demonstrated the important role gender plays in determining the likelihood of involvement in delinquent behavior. Earlier theories of delinquency, including Hirschi’s theory of social control have ignored the importance of gender by ignoring females all together. Using data derived from Wave 1 of the National Youth Survey, the purpose of this study is to conduct a partial test of Hirschi’s Social Control theory to determine whether the theory can properly explain not only delinquency in boys, but also delinquency among girls.

Identifying Competencies Of Aoda Clinical Supervisors For Integration Into Rehabilitation Counselor Training Curriculum: A Delphi Study, Marissa Mckee Dec 2011

Identifying Competencies Of Aoda Clinical Supervisors For Integration Into Rehabilitation Counselor Training Curriculum: A Delphi Study, Marissa Mckee

Dissertations

This study preliminarily identified clinical supervision competencies needed for alcohol and other drug abuse (AODA) clinical supervisors for integration into rehabilitation counselor training (RCT) curriculum. The Delphi method via LimeSurvey® was utilized to identify competencies specific to AODA clinical supervision. A panel of six experts in RCT and AODA clinical supervision completed five rounds of data collection beginning with an open-ended question. Consensus and stability of responses were calculated following Rounds 2-5 of data collection. Panelist fatigue resulted in data collection being discontinued after Round 5, prior to a consensus or stability of responses being reached. A total of 115 …

Patternicity And Persuasion: Evolutionary Biology As A Bridge Between Economic And Narrative Analysis In The Law, James D. Ridgway Dec 2011

Patternicity And Persuasion: Evolutionary Biology As A Bridge Between Economic And Narrative Analysis In The Law, James D. Ridgway

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Although economic and narrative analyses are clearly useful in exploring legal issues, their foundations and persuasive power have not been thoroughly investigated.  Evolutionary biology can now explain how human beings instinctively approach legal problems, and what features from economic and narrative analysis are rooted in the information processing functions of the brain.  As a result, the most effective aspects of each can be synthesized into a new tool, the archetypal narratives of human interaction.  This article proposes that evolutionary biology indicates that human beings process legal arguments using three archetypal narratives: (1) the story of cooperation, which describes maximizing the …

The Need For Specialized Programs For Lgbt Individuals In Substance Abuse Treatment, Erin E. Mooney Dec 2011

The Need For Specialized Programs For Lgbt Individuals In Substance Abuse Treatment, Erin E. Mooney

Research Papers

Specialized substance abuse treatment programs for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals are limited. Specialized treatment programs offer unique and tailored services to ‘special populations’ in order to provide effective treatment. The services offered in these programs are proven to be especially helpful and effective for LGBT individuals. Many researchers have suggested that LGBT-Specific substance abuse programs have better treatment outcomes for LGBT individuals than mainstream treatment programs. LGBT individuals have been said to have much higher rates of substance abuse than their heterosexual counterparts. They also face discrimination, prejudice, negative attitudes and behavior, and unique life experiences that …

Common Crowd Dynamics: Shaping Behavioral Intention Models, Marcel Bouchard Dec 2011

Common Crowd Dynamics: Shaping Behavioral Intention Models, Marcel Bouchard

Theses

As the human population grows, so too does the need to understand human behavior. One particularly important aspect of human behavior is how it changes within conglomerations of people, i.e. crowds. In this thesis, a method for modeling crowd behavior is proposed. This method draws inspiration from the concept of behavioral intention and the related forces of attitudes, influences, and social norms. These topics are first defined and detailed, followed by a survey of related research. Next, the model is presented and adapted to three common crowd dynamics, each stressing a different component of behavioral intention. Observations are made about …

Ripe For The Plucking: Centralized And Consolidated Library Budgets As Revenue Streams For Profit., Roger Cross Aug 2011

Ripe For The Plucking: Centralized And Consolidated Library Budgets As Revenue Streams For Profit., Roger Cross

Articles

The accumulation and centralization of fiscal and selection power into the hands of library professionals could have benefited all, but inherent flaws were bound to arise. In particular the failure to adapt to increased large profit-driven publishers business. Libraries and universities failed to adequately foresee the extent of publishing monopolization. The academic library, as provider of campus-wide journal subscription, reduced demand by reducing the need to maintain individual departmental and faculty subscriptions. The end result was that a small number of publishers were able to fix pricing according to desired profit margins.

The Integrated Basic Education And Skills Training (I-Best) Program: Equiping All Adults For The Global Economy, Robert W. Fox, Mitchell R. Williams Aug 2011

The Integrated Basic Education And Skills Training (I-Best) Program: Equiping All Adults For The Global Economy, Robert W. Fox, Mitchell R. Williams

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

Abstract

In 2004, educational leaders in Washington State, recognizing the necessity of rapidly equipping adults with career skills, developed the Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training (I-BEST) program to meet workforce needs. I-BEST is now operational in all 34 of the State’s community colleges. I-BEST is an instructional method which provides basic skills support to ABE and ESL students while they receive career training. I-BEST uniquely pairs a basic skills instructor with a vocational instructor in the classroom at the same time. Previous research on the I-BEST program has been positive, but it has ignored the pivotal role instructors and …

The Black Catholic Movement And Social Movement Continuity Theory: The Civil Rights Movement In Abeyance, Kevin C. Winstead Aug 2011

The Black Catholic Movement And Social Movement Continuity Theory: The Civil Rights Movement In Abeyance, Kevin C. Winstead

Research Papers

This work builds on Verta Taylor’s theory on social movement continuity to explain abeyance structures within total institutions. The work is grounded in the reinterpretation of Doug McAdam’s data from Political Process and the Development of Black Insurgency (1982) and in new data on the Black Catholic Rights movement from 1968 to the 1990s. Together these cases outline a type of abeyance structure within social movements that holds over the culture, resources, and strategies of a movement by focusing on more narrow oppositional interest. Using the five characteristics of an abeyance structure the research will discuss how the Black Catholic …

TITLE: BILATERAL ASYMMETRY IN INCISORS: IMPLICATIONS FOR MIOCENE HOMINOID SPECIES DIAGNOSIS MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Robert S. Corruccini The primary purpose of this dissertation is to show how knowledge of variation and asymmetry in incisor antimeric pairs of living great ape genera can be utilized as a "yardstick" for pairwise comparisons of isolated Miocene ape incisors from the two genera Kenyapithecus and Equatorius . The research was designed to help determine whether these …

Youth In Revolt. How Suburban Youth Of The 1950s Rejected The Contradictions Of An Affluent Society In Favor Of Apocalyptic Zombies And Chicken Runs, Michele Leigh Goostree Aug 2011

Youth In Revolt. How Suburban Youth Of The 1950s Rejected The Contradictions Of An Affluent Society In Favor Of Apocalyptic Zombies And Chicken Runs, Michele Leigh Goostree

Theses

The purpose of this study is two-fold. First, I will examine the influences shaping the choices of teenagers living in an affluent society during the early days of the Cold War, specifically 1950 - 1955. I will discuss the contradictions about society, the family unit, and gender roles teenagers attempted to sort out as they moved through adolescence. Secondly, I will focus on two forms of mass media, specifically comic books and movies of the 1950s. Media has always had the power to change and shape the opinion of the youth culture who consumed it. I will discuss the lengths …

The Rise Of The European Corporate Elite: Evidence From The Network Of Interlocking Directorates In 2005 And 2010, Eelke M. Heemskerk Jul 2011

The Rise Of The European Corporate Elite: Evidence From The Network Of Interlocking Directorates In 2005 And 2010, Eelke M. Heemskerk

2011

Studies of national networks of interlocking directorates across the globe reveal that since their heydays in the early 1970s, such corporate networks are in decline. During the past decade, there are indications that the cohesion between European corporate boards is actually increasing. However, the financial crisis might have well put a halt to the emerging European corporate network of board interlocks. The return of the nation state in the economic arena in response to the financial and economic crisis might have encouraged European big business to orient themselves towards the national community. Therefore this paper investigates the social organisation of …

Disagreeing About Disagreement: How Conflict In Social Networks Affects Political Behavior, Casey A. Klofstad, Anand Sokhey, Scott D. Mcclurg

Working Papers

At the center of debates on deliberative democracy is the issue of how much real deliberation citizens experience in their core social networks.  These “disagreements about disagreement” come in a variety of forms, with scholars advocating significantly different empirical approaches (e.g., Huckfeldt et al. 2004; Mutz 2006), and coming to significantly different substantive conclusions.  We tackle these discrepancies by investigating the effect of conceptual and measurement differences on key findings relating interpersonal political disagreement to political attitudes and behaviors. Drawing on the 2008-2009 ANES panel study, we find evidence that different measures of disagreement have distinct effects when it comes …

From Scientific Knowledge To Policy About Climate Change In The Great Lakes: An Analysis Of Two-Mode Networks Of Co-Authored Documents, I-Chien Chen, Ken Frank, Youngmi Lee, Maria Lemos, Tingqiao Chen, Scott Everett Kalafatis, Henry Renee Jun 2011

From Scientific Knowledge To Policy About Climate Change In The Great Lakes: An Analysis Of Two-Mode Networks Of Co-Authored Documents, I-Chien Chen, Ken Frank, Youngmi Lee, Maria Lemos, Tingqiao Chen, Scott Everett Kalafatis, Henry Renee

2011

Recent work on the knowledge formation of climate change suggests that the set of ideas one holds to be true is influenced by the group of people who interacts with the same social contexts and by the views of authorities recognized by the group. From knowledge formation to political action, the mechanism not only depends upon participators' ability to integrate, but to cooperate with the public interests, policy makers, and other scientists of the verity of these claims.

This study explores how stakeholders in Great Lakes climate change access environmental knowledge in their networks and how that affects their decision-making. …

"Clubs Of Clubs": A Networks Approach To The Logic Of Membership In Intergovernmental Organizations, Yonatan Lupu, Brian D. Greenhill Jun 2011

"Clubs Of Clubs": A Networks Approach To The Logic Of Membership In Intergovernmental Organizations, Yonatan Lupu, Brian D. Greenhill

2011

Political scientists are paying increasing attention to the effect that shared membership in intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) has in international politics.  A number of studies have examined the role that shared membership in IGOs has on dependent variables such as conflict, trade, interest convergence and the diffusion of human rights norms.  More recently, scholars have turned their attention to explaining the variation that exists in the extent to which states join IGOs in the first place.  In this paper we advance this literature by adopting a network theoretic perspective of IGO membership.  Rather than considering the IGO network as simply a …

Reconsidering The Benefits Of Minority Cohesion: The Difference Between Relative And Absolute Cohesion In The U.S. House Of Representatives, Bryce J. Dietrich Jun 2011

Reconsidering The Benefits Of Minority Cohesion: The Difference Between Relative And Absolute Cohesion In The U.S. House Of Representatives, Bryce J. Dietrich

2011

Cohesion has long been a topic of interest for those studying minorities in the U.S. Congress. Generally, it is thought that cohesion gives minorities an advantage in legislative bargaining, which ultimately helps them influence the legislative process. However, this only assumes absolute not relative cohesion. When minorities work more with each other they are less able to work with those outside their group. This makes legislative influence more difficult for minorities. By examining sponsorship-cosponsorship networks from the 97th-103rd Congresses, I show that cohesion actually hurts the ability of minorities to influence the legislative process. This affect is felt differently for …

Analyzing Democratization With A Social Network Approach, Steffen Mohrenberg Jun 2011

Analyzing Democratization With A Social Network Approach, Steffen Mohrenberg

Working Papers

External factors of democratization are variables on the international level which are assumed to influence democratization within countries. It is plausible to describe some of these factors as relational concepts. From this relational perspective, methods of social network analysis can contribute to the understanding of changes in the level of democracy in countries around the globe.

First, the terms regime, democracy, and democratization are clarified. Second, explanations of democratization are presented as internal and external factors. Third, the basic ideas and principles behind the quantitative analysis of social networks are sketched. Fourth, a list of external factors of democratization with …

Who Killed The Inner Circle? The Breakdown Of The American Corporate Elite Network, 1999-2009, Johan S. G. Chu, Gerald F. Davis Jun 2011

Who Killed The Inner Circle? The Breakdown Of The American Corporate Elite Network, 1999-2009, Johan S. G. Chu, Gerald F. Davis

2011

This paper analyzes the properties of the board interlock network connecting the largest American corporations between 1999 and 2009. We find that the former stability of the network—in which a handful of banks and multinationals held positions at the center, a few dozen directors served on a large number of boards, and thus the distance between any two companies or directors was short—has largely collapsed during the past decade. There is no longer a stable core of companies that reliably occupies a center, and the mean geodesic has gone up continuously since 2002. The proximal cause is that no cohort …

Conflict Management Education In Medicine: Considerations For Curriculum Designers, Jeffery Kaufman May 2011

Conflict Management Education In Medicine: Considerations For Curriculum Designers, Jeffery Kaufman

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

It is important to address conflict in the medical field for a variety of reasons ranging from reducing turnover to increasing the quality of care received by patients. One way to assist with the management of medical conflict is by teaching resolution techniques to medical personnel. There is an opportunity for conflict management curriculum to address many of the issues facing physicians, administrators, staff and patients, however, it is also necessary for those developing that curriculum to understand the nature of the environment and appropriate conflict management tools to be used in that environment as part of the design process. …

Towards The Practice Of Volunteering 2.0: Volunteers’ Digital Choices With Social Affordances In The Web 2.0 Era, Ayse Kok

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

There is little evidence that helps to inform education, practice, policy, and research about issues surrounding the use of online collaboration tools for organisational initiatives (Brown & Duguid, 1991; Cook & Brown, 1999); let alone a single study conducted with regard to the volunteering practice of knowledge workers. The underlying objectives of the research study are to explore and describe how corporate volunteers experience and participate in learning in technology-rich environments; investigate the strategies, beliefs and intentions of corporate volunteers who are effective in learning in technology-rich environments and identity factors that enable or inhibit effective e-learning and make recommendations …
