Social Media And Primary Commercial Service Airports, Clayton L. Stambaugh
Social Media And Primary Commercial Service Airports, Clayton L. Stambaugh
Research Papers
Throughout the past decade the aviation industry in the United States has continually encountered significant socio-economic burdens. Most notable, the tragic events of September 11th left the industry highly susceptible to economic turmoil, such as the global recession accentuated by record high fuel prices, as well as sociological events like the world pandemic in the form of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The nation’s airports, the infrastructure supporting this industry, are no exception. In conjunction with these onerous events, continuing cuts in intergovernmental funding sources, as well as weakened revenue streams, have forced airports to utilize contemporary tools, strategies, …
Human Geography And Behavior Analysis: An Application Of Behavior Analysis To The Explanation Of The Evolution Of Human Landscapes, William Norton
Human Geography And Behavior Analysis: An Application Of Behavior Analysis To The Explanation Of The Evolution Of Human Landscapes, William Norton
The Psychological Record
Human geography is a social science concerned primarily with data-based analyses and the utilization of various theoretical constructs mostly developed in other social science disciplines. A discussion of the character of human geography supports the suggestion that human geographic analyses of landscapes will benefit from employment of additional theories, specifically from a judicious interpretation and application of work in behavior analysis. Human landscape-making behavior can be explained using the concepts and principles of behavior analysis as developed in psychology and as applied in sociology and anthropology. For human geographers, this suggestion is at variance with most other recent conceptual contributions …

Life After Prison: The Role Of The Juvenile Prison Experience And The Impact On Reintegration For Black Males, Wanda Taree Hunter
Life After Prison: The Role Of The Juvenile Prison Experience And The Impact On Reintegration For Black Males, Wanda Taree Hunter
Dissertations
The purpose of this exploratory study is to examine the reintegration experiences of Black men who were transferred to adult court and served time in adult prison as teenagers. Twenty-one semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 21 Black men who served prison time when he was a teenager. At present, we know little about the long-term effects of waiver and sentencing practices. Hence, my question and main purpose for this research is this: Does the "ex-convict" label affect the reintegration experiences of Black males after serving time in an adult prison as a youth? I focus on Braithwaite's reintegrative shaming …
Motivation And Attitudes Toward Learning French In The University's Foreign Language Classroom, Brianna Johnson
Motivation And Attitudes Toward Learning French In The University's Foreign Language Classroom, Brianna Johnson
Theses
In second language research and pedagogy, motivation has been labeled as a key factor for success (Clément, 1980; Dörnyei, 1998; Tremblay & Gardner, 1995; Deci & Ryan, 1985); namely, language learners with high levels of motivation will be more successful than those who exhibit more negative attitudes towards learning the TL. Through classroom observations, student survey responses and personal interviews conducted in a beginner-level university French class, this study attempted to determine broad motivational patterns using Gardner's (1982) binary integrative and instrumental model, and then determine specific origins for these motivations. Four interviewees were selected: two with high instrumental and …
Interactionist Labeling: Formal And Informal Labeling's Effects On Juvenile Delinquency, Daniel Ryan Kavish
Interactionist Labeling: Formal And Informal Labeling's Effects On Juvenile Delinquency, Daniel Ryan Kavish
Theses
This thesis critically reviews prior labeling theory research concerning juvenile delinquency and crime; it adds to current work by using contemporary data. Labeling events are described in detail to provide an overall understanding of where labels originate, who is casting the label, and what research suggests concerning different types of labels. An interactionist labeling model is tested to explain levels of juvenile delinquency among a nationally representative sample of American adolescents: the first three waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). Finally, negative binomial regression models are estimated in order to better explain the dynamic relationship …

"Was Anyone Out There Watching Last Night?": The Creation And Early History Of New England Sport Network, 1980-1989, Tanya Lee Lovejoy
Dissertations
In the United States, regional sports networks broadcast games of home teams to audiences in specific communities, or geographical areas. Ownership of regional sports network by sports teams presents a unique type of vertical integration. Regional sports networks use distinctive programming to connect to local sports culture. This dissertation explores the historical significance of New England Sports Network (NESN), a team created, owned and operated regional sports network, which broadcasts Boston Red Sox baseball games and Boston Bruins hockey games throughout the New England region. Using elements of cultural studies, specifically political economy and textual analysis, this dissertation examines the …

Religious Participation And Attitudes Towards Homosexual Marriage And Civil Unions, Amanda A. Patrick
Religious Participation And Attitudes Towards Homosexual Marriage And Civil Unions, Amanda A. Patrick
Research Papers
This study examines how religious participation and progressive attitudes serve to shape opinions on same-sex marriage and civil unions. Although several investigations have been carried out on the issue of same-sex marriage and civil unions, mostly in the area of the influence of religious participation, attitudes however, have not been given much consideration. This study therefore expands the literature on the issue of same sex marriage and civil unions by looking at attitudes and beliefs such as: being open to new experiences, belief in doing social and religious good, belief in the attribution of choice in homosexuality, the belief that …

Giving Students The Reins: Taking Advantage Of Service-Learning's Potential As A Pedagogy For Teaching Writing, Tereza Joy Kramer
Giving Students The Reins: Taking Advantage Of Service-Learning's Potential As A Pedagogy For Teaching Writing, Tereza Joy Kramer
Dissertations
Service-learning helps students experience the practical applications of learning to write well; it also offers opportunities for students to develop a sense of civic responsibility. Although service-learning is growing in popularity, this pedagogy is not prevalent in English departments. Additionally, service-learning courses across all disciplines typically do not empower students to make their own project decisions. Given these tendencies, it is useful to consider whether service-learning is an effective pedagogy for writing, whether students should be designing their own projects, and what writing instructors could do to facilitate students' growth as writers while completing projects in the community. This is …
The Military, Economy And The State: A New International System Analysis, Muhammed A. Asadi
The Military, Economy And The State: A New International System Analysis, Muhammed A. Asadi
Dissertations
In this dissertation, I outline a theoretical justification for a new world systems analysis in order to understand economic development and underdevelopment, and stratification systems that emerge within nation states because of their global social location. I present my detailed case for amending Wallerstein's World-Systems Analysis by empirically incorporating the interplay of the military, economy and state as opposed to his primarily economic division of labor that defines the core, periphery and semi periphery. I do this by uncovering the latent structure of militarization and its articulation within the world system controlling for state strength. I also outline the basic …
Searching For A Father, Lewis Stafford
Searching For A Father, Lewis Stafford
Research Papers
SEARCHING FOR A FATHER explores the lives of two African American men who grew up in broken homes. This documentary will emphasize that time is critically important from childhood to adulthood by profiling two African Americans around the very pressing themes of why African American fathers leave home. This film will allow the two African American men to discuss their lives in whatever way they see fit to explain and share their stories about their fathers and the role models that they found to replace their father figures

After a series of gay teen suicides were publicly reported as resulting from homophobic peer bullying in 2010, Dan Savage and Terry Miller created a You Tube video in which they spoke out against bullying and encouraged LGBT teens to persevere through their high school years. The video went viral, and since 2010 over 50,000 It Gets Better videos have been created. In this paper, I examine how the It Gets Better Project discourse has opened a space for the participation of heterosexual individuals in a movement directed at LGBT youth. I ask how heterosexual It Gets Better Project video …

First-Generation Students In Higher Education: Issues Of Employability In A Knowledge Based Economy, Malar Hirudayaraj
First-Generation Students In Higher Education: Issues Of Employability In A Knowledge Based Economy, Malar Hirudayaraj
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
This paper explores the issues around the transition of first-generation students in higher education into the knowledge based economy. It discusses how the lack of parental education deprives first-generation students of the cultural capital that is transmitted through the family and how this influences the acquisition of the “soft currencies” that employers expect them to demonstrate in this economy. The article stresses the need for focused research on understanding the problems faced by these students with regard to their employability and actual employment, specifically in the context of mass higher education. It highlights the need for research that could inform …
A Gibbs Sampler For The Multidimensional Item Response Model, Yanyan Sheng, Todd C. Headrick
A Gibbs Sampler For The Multidimensional Item Response Model, Yanyan Sheng, Todd C. Headrick
Publications
Current procedures for estimating compensatory multidimensional item response theory MIRT models using Markov chain Monte Carlo MCMC techniques are inadequate in that they do not directly model the interrelationship between latent traits. This limits the implementation of the model in various applications and further prevents the development of other types of IRT models that offer advantages not realized in existing models. In view of this, an MCMC algorithm is proposed for MIRT models so that the actual latent structure is directly modeled. It is demonstrated that the algorithm performs well in modeling parameters as well as intertrait correlations and that …
A Community Resilience Model For Understanding And Assessing The Sustainability Of Forest-Dependent Communities, Kofi Akamani
A Community Resilience Model For Understanding And Assessing The Sustainability Of Forest-Dependent Communities, Kofi Akamani
Forestry Articles
Recent decades have seen an evolution in thinking on the sustainability of forest-dependent communities from community stability to community resilience, which seeks to enhance communities’ ability to respond to drivers of change in ways that sustain the multiple dimensions of well-being. However, the process of community response to drivers of change is not well understood and methods for assessing community resilience are not fully developed. This paper proposes a theoretical model to understand the structures and processes influencing the adaptation of communities and households to drivers of change and which can serve as a guide to the development of indicators …

What Liaisons Say About Themselves And What Faculty Say About Their Liaisons, A U.S. Survey, Julie Arendt, Megan Lotts
Articles
Liaison librarians and faculty in chemistry, English, and psychology departments at colleges and universities in the United States were surveyed. They answered questions about services provided by the liaison and satisfaction. Liaisons’ satisfaction with their performance was associated with active liaison service, such as recent contact with the department and more time spent on liaison work. Faculty satisfaction with liaisons was associated with contact with their liaisons. We did not find associations between liaisons’ descriptions of their work and faculty satisfaction with their liaisons for the pairs of faculty and their liaisons we were able to match.

High Performance Gibbs Sampling For Irtmodels Using Row-Wise Decomposition, Yanyan Sheng, Mona Rahimi
High Performance Gibbs Sampling For Irtmodels Using Row-Wise Decomposition, Yanyan Sheng, Mona Rahimi
Publications
Item response theory (IRT) is a popular approach used for addressing statistical problems in psychometrics as well as in other fields. The fully Bayesian approach for estimating IRT models is computationally expensive. This limits the use of the procedure in real applications. In an effort to reduce the execution time, a previous study shows that high performance computing provides a solution by achieving a considerable speedup via the use of multiple processors. Given the high data dependencies in a single Markov chain for IRT models, it is not possible to avoid communication overhead among processors. This study is to reduce …
Gender, Social Networks, And Voting Behavior, Scott D. Mcclurg, Michelle L. Wade, Maja V. Wright-Phillips
Gender, Social Networks, And Voting Behavior, Scott D. Mcclurg, Michelle L. Wade, Maja V. Wright-Phillips
Working Papers
This paper examines how interpersonal social networks help explain the voting behavior of men and women. We argue that the gender gap in voting is influenced by the partisan and gender composition of networks, rather than just the latter. Building on this foundation, we explain how gendering in network construction and impact helps create a cleavage between men and women even under conditions that are often close to "random mixing." Analysis of the 2000 American National Election Study shows the voting gap is related to men excluding women from political networks, men being less exposed to females who support Democrats, …
The Diffusion Of Politically Expert Opinion Within And Among Groups, Rober Huckfeldt, Matthew T. Pietryka, Jack L. Reilly
The Diffusion Of Politically Expert Opinion Within And Among Groups, Rober Huckfeldt, Matthew T. Pietryka, Jack L. Reilly
2012
This paper employs a small group experiment to study the process of political influence within social networks. Each experimental session involves seven individuals, where privately obtained information is costly but communication within the group is free. Hence, individuals form prior judgments regarding candidates based on public and private information before updating their priors through a process of social communication. In general, individuals select expert informants with political preferences similar to their own, and we consider the dynamic implications for individual and group preferences. In particular, we address the diffusion of information based on a DeGroot model which provides a dynamic …
