Who Says I Should Leave? Factors Determining The Decision To Leave Home During Disasters, Vondragas J. Smalley
Who Says I Should Leave? Factors Determining The Decision To Leave Home During Disasters, Vondragas J. Smalley
Honors Theses
In an effort to minimize casualties during natural catastrophes, specifically hurricanes, researchers have found that risk perception, socioeconomic status, and past evacuation experience are important determinants in evacuation behavior. This study argues that these factors as well as race are important determinants in the decision of individuals to evacuate in the face of natural disasters. My investigation employs chi-square analysis and cross tabulation to determine the importance of these factors. The findings indicate that these hypotheses may impact the decision of residents to evacuate in the face of natural disasters and warrant further study by those doing evacuation behavior research.

Is There The Threat Of Dutch Disease In The United States? A Look At The Impacts Of Natural Resource Exports On The Number Of Domestic Manufacturing Jobs, Andrew M. Miskell
Is There The Threat Of Dutch Disease In The United States? A Look At The Impacts Of Natural Resource Exports On The Number Of Domestic Manufacturing Jobs, Andrew M. Miskell
Research Papers
This paper intends on investigating the potential relationship that exists between the number of manufacturing jobs in the United States and the exportation of natural resources. It will stress how the increase seen in the exporting of America’s natural resources over a thirty-three year period from 1980 to 2012, has coincided with significant job loss in the manufacturing sector. Specifically, this paper will show through a cross-sectional analysis of the United States that there has been a negative, linear, and significant relationship between these items of interest.

What’S Pay Got To Do With It? Collective Identity Formation In The Americorps Program, Ryan Guy Ceresola
What’S Pay Got To Do With It? Collective Identity Formation In The Americorps Program, Ryan Guy Ceresola
Research Papers
It is clear that Social Movement Organizations (SMOs) aim to recruit and retain members, and most do so by promoting some sort of collective identity formation. What is unclear, however, is the role of extrinsic rewards in promoting collective identity formation in SMO members. To address this issue, I use AmeriCorps to investigate the consequences extrinsic rewards have on collective identity formation. Based on twenty-two interviews with a diverse sample of AmeriCorps members, I find AmeriCorps members do not express a sense of collective identity with their fellow members with reference to the work they do, the values they have, …

Exploring Linkages Between Consumer Food Co-Operatives And Domestic Fair Trade In The United States, Leslie Duram
Exploring Linkages Between Consumer Food Co-Operatives And Domestic Fair Trade In The United States, Leslie Duram
Publications
Consumer Food Co-operatives (co-ops) have provided consumers an alternative to corporate supermarkets and big-box stores since the 1960s. Producers seeking broader marketing opportunities often turn to co-ops. This study examines how, within Alternative Food Networks (AFNs), co-ops play a role in the emergence of the Domestic Fair Trade movement in the US. The Domestic Fair Trade (DFT) movement is based on the idea that family farms and small- to mid-sized farms in the global north are facing many of the same pressures as producers in the global south. The Domestic Fair Trade Association (DFTA) in the United States is the …
The Implications Of Multigenerational Differences Within The Workforce, Benjamin R. Hayes
The Implications Of Multigenerational Differences Within The Workforce, Benjamin R. Hayes
Research Papers
This paper identifies and discusses generational effects on public administration, particularly in the field of public administration and public policy. Specifically, it is the conclusion here that identifying the different perspectives, attitudes, and behaviors exhibited by the five traditional generational groups (traditionalists/veterans, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y/Millenials, and Generation Z) will assist managers in the public sector field to better communicate with their employees, thus resulting in a more effective working environment through enhancing organizational cohesion and cooperation. A phenomenological mixed method will be employed, utilizing peer-reviewed literature and governmentally issued statistics. Discussion of these aspects follows below and …
Understanding The Adoption Of State-Level Policies For Transgender Persons: Political Mediation And The Role Of Litigation, Trey Green
Research Papers
Politicians and prison officials are under increasing pressure to set policy for housing and treatment for transgender prison inmates. Despite this common need, only a handful of states have adopted a formal written prison policy that addresses transgender inmates. Furthermore, there has been little academic research on this subject. This paper seeks to determine how and why some states develop policies while others do not. Specifically, the research questions include: What are the state-level political conditions that lead to transgender policy regimes? Moreover, will these be the same conditions that are necessary for a positive outcome of transgender prison policies? …

Creators@Siu - A Socio-Academic Networking Tool, Adithi Ravishankar
Research Papers
This project studies the implications of using social networking sites as a platform for student learning / collaboration and to enhance classroom experiences. The goal of this study is to illustrate how a customized socio-academic experience made available within academia, could positively impact the student’s learning, foster a culture of creative self-sufficiency and collaboration, while simultaneously cut down on the privacy issues that are found while using social networks that are available for public usage.
Adding to a critical analysis of studies about social networking patterns amongst students and faculty members in higher education, the research methodology for this study …

Reframing The Mediation Lens: The Call For A Situational Style Of Mediation, Tanya M. Marcum, Charles R. Stoner, Sandra J. Perry
Reframing The Mediation Lens: The Call For A Situational Style Of Mediation, Tanya M. Marcum, Charles R. Stoner, Sandra J. Perry
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Child custody mediation can have a positive impact on the parties involved in mediation as well as on the process of settlement itself. The process of mediation focuses the parties on the needs of the children and helps the parents to be realistic in their expectations regarding custody and visitation of the children. Mediators realize the importance of listening carefully to the parties involved in the custody dispute. This article looks at three distinct groups of mediators involved in child custody mediation in the state of Illinois, the mediators perceived mediation styles, and their actual mediation styles. As a result, …
Patterns In Environmental Drivers Of Wetland Functioning And Species Composition In A Complex Peatland, Jeremy A. Graham
Patterns In Environmental Drivers Of Wetland Functioning And Species Composition In A Complex Peatland, Jeremy A. Graham
Theses
The boreal peatlands that cover much of western Canada are immense reservoirs of organic carbon and nitrogen, serving as sinks for atmospheric carbon, as well as providing habitat for flora and fauna, and nutrient cycling. These ecosystems are generally believed to be nitrogen limited. Due to regional increases in industrial activities associated in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR), atmospheric deposition of nitrogen is projected to increase, with unknown effects on peatland functioning. The results of this study provide baseline data for a nitrogen fertilization experiment with an accurate site description of the entire peatland complex to provide reference for …
Verbal Community Reinforcement, With An Illustration Using The Esoteric Buddhist Concepts Of Fuse And Muzai No Nanse, Bernard Guerin, Sejima Junichiro
Verbal Community Reinforcement, With An Illustration Using The Esoteric Buddhist Concepts Of Fuse And Muzai No Nanse, Bernard Guerin, Sejima Junichiro
The Psychological Record
Problems with Skinner's (1957) definition of verbal behavior are raised and one possible solution is presented. It is suggested that the way in which verbal communities shape behavior is distinctive-unlike the physical environment, verbal communities have culturally evolved a system of extremely generalized conditions for reinforcement which allows arbitrary relations to be shaped-and therefore could serve to define verbal behavior and exclude other forms of socially mediated behaviors. The form of "loose" shaping used is described, along with anthropological and sociological equivalents, and a suggestion is made of how it might figure in equivalence class formation. Two terms from Esoteric …

Media Coverage Of The 2011 Presidential Elections In Uganda: A Comparative Content Analysis Of New Vision And Daily Monitor Newspapers, Bob Roberts Katende
Media Coverage Of The 2011 Presidential Elections In Uganda: A Comparative Content Analysis Of New Vision And Daily Monitor Newspapers, Bob Roberts Katende
Research Papers
This study analyzed the content of two newspapers, namely the government owned New Vision and the privately owned Daily Monitor for their coverage of the 2011 presidential elections. A total sample size of 499 news articles was analyzed for coverage, structural and selection biases. The results indicated that although the presidential race involved eight candidates, the incumbent Yoweri Museveni received more coverage in both newspapers than other candidates. He was followed by his main challenge Kiiza Besigye. Third party candidates received minimal coverage from both newspapers. The New Vision was also found to have given more favorable coverage to the …
The Performance Cult Of The Room: Embodied Audiencing And Movie Riffing As Shared Sense-Making, Matt Foy
The Performance Cult Of The Room: Embodied Audiencing And Movie Riffing As Shared Sense-Making, Matt Foy
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
This ethnographic study explores everyday cultural performance and embodied audiencing practices at a performance-centered midnight screening of the 2003 cult film The Room.
Prior to attending and co-performing the film’s group audiencing ritual, the author explores fan appropriation of the previously obscure film and fan-generated and circulated performance scripts. Drawing on thick description and bodily knowledge gained from attending and performing The Room’s audiencing ritual, the author explores how the ritual’s scripts are embraced, embellished, and deviated from while critiquing problematic aspects of the ritual.
Within these intersections, the author discusses ways in which cultural performance and embodied …

Legitimacy, Innovation, And Harmonization: Precursors To Operationalizing Biofuels Sustainability Standards, Jody M. Endres
Legitimacy, Innovation, And Harmonization: Precursors To Operationalizing Biofuels Sustainability Standards, Jody M. Endres
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
How to balance land uses to sustainably feed, clothe, and power a burgeoning population aspiring to western lifestyles will be a profound, if not the most profound, challenge to policymakers in the 21st century. And, climate change’s unpredictable effects on natural systems will exacerbate already complex, uncertain, and contentious land use decision-making. While biomass-based energy policies gained momentum throughout the 2000s as one way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, assumptions about biofuels’ environmental and societal benefits are beginning to come under closer scrutiny. In response, public laws have incorporated varying forms of sustainability considerations. Many private standards have emerged, however, …
