The Use Of Specialized Cybercrime Policing Units: An Organizational Analysis, Dale Willits, Jeffrey Nowacki Apr 2016

The Use Of Specialized Cybercrime Policing Units: An Organizational Analysis, Dale Willits, Jeffrey Nowacki

Articles

Given the increased focus and importance of cybercrime, some police agencies have turned to the use of specialized cybercrime policing units. Research has yet to examine the how frequently these units are used in policing, nor has research examined the types of agencies most likely to use these units. The current research, drawing on contingency theory, institutional theory, and Maguire’s theory of police organizational structure, uses four waves of Law Enforcement Management and Administrative Survey data to provide a descriptive analysis of specialized cybercrime units with a focus on identifying organizational correlates, environmental pressures, and the role of time. Trend …

An Intersectional Approach To Race/Ethnicity, Sex, And Age Disparity In Federal Sentencing Outcomes: An Examination Of Policy Across Time Periods, Jeffrey Nowacki Apr 2016

An Intersectional Approach To Race/Ethnicity, Sex, And Age Disparity In Federal Sentencing Outcomes: An Examination Of Policy Across Time Periods, Jeffrey Nowacki

Articles

Approaches to intersectionality stress the importance of recognizing multiple, intersecting inequalities. As such, recent sentencing research has examined the changing role of extra-legal characteristics on United States federal sentencing outcomes in the aftermath of recent policy changes (e.g., United States v. Booker), but scholarship has less often examined these characteristics at the intersections of race/ethnicity, gender, and, especially age. This article uses an intersectional approach to examine the influence of these characteristics net of legally-relevant characteristics. Using ordinary-least squares regression procedures, the author examines the role of the joint effects of extra-legal variables on sentence length decisions across four distinct …

Healthy Communities In Southern Illinois, Shiloh L. Deitz Apr 2016

Healthy Communities In Southern Illinois, Shiloh L. Deitz

The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)

Due to industrial and lifestyle changes, rural and small town areas are losing population and suffering economic hardship. These areas also suffer from the poorest health. However, most rural or small town residents also believe in the American Dream, revitalizing their local area, and preserving the small town or rural way of life. In this paper, I look at the relationship between obesity and local infrastructure – including walkability and access to healthy food – in southern Illinois. I then make suggestions for development policies for the region in the context of local public opinion.

Using Social Indicators To Evaluate The Effectiveness Of Outreach In Two Indiana Watersheds, Rebecca Busse, Jessica D. Ulrich-Schad, Lyn Crighton, Sara Peel, Ken Genskow, Linda Stalker Prokopy

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Nonpoint source pollution is recognized as one of the greatest threats to water quality in the United States. Outreach is one tool that can be used to help increase public awareness and motivate action towards addressing water issues. In order to create effective outreach, we must understand public perceptions of water quality, perceived barriers to implementing environmental solutions, and what types of outreach best connect with target audiences. In 2010, social indicator surveys were distributed in two watersheds in Indiana to gather baseline data on urban and agricultural residents' attitudes towards and usage of water quality conservation practices. Local watershed …

Deans Of Women In U.S. Higher Education, Kaitlin Schmitt

Research Papers

This paper traces the role of deans of women in institutions of higher education in the United States, spanning from the 1800s until the position’s decline in the 1960s. Deans of women played a pivotal role in advocating for college women, helping them receive access to housing, student organizations, and academic programs originally open only to their male peers. As the position because a staple on campuses across the country, deans of women created organizations, conferences, and journals with the hope of sharing their experiences with other deans, and setting professional standards. After World War II, the role of deans …

Living Communication Pedagogy: Instructors With Visible Disabilities, Carrie E. Mulderink Jan 2016

Living Communication Pedagogy: Instructors With Visible Disabilities, Carrie E. Mulderink

Research Papers

In this paper, I argue that critical communication pedagogy, as a discipline, can benefit from an inclusion of instructors with visible disabilities in its literature and analysis. In particular, I employ my experiences as a teaching assistant with a visible disability to situate my own embodied knowledge as a way of understanding, in concert with literature reviews of critical communication pedagogy and instructors with visible disabilities. I also interview instructors with visible disabilities about their experiences to argue for our inclusion in critical communication pedagogy.

Study Of The Quantity Theory Of Money, Jerome Howard Jr. Jan 2016

Study Of The Quantity Theory Of Money, Jerome Howard Jr.

Research Papers

This paper examines the classical theory of the relationship between the money supply, inflation, and output. The purpose of the paper is to determine empirically if the quantity theory of money holds true. Using regression analysis, one can observes if the theory is accurate. Taking data over time and from three separate countries, I used the ordinary least squares method to determine the correctness of the quantity theory of money. I used a large amount of other statistically methods to determine the preciseness of the theory.

"Why Would You Choose It?" - Exploring Culturally Motivated Life Choices Through In-Depth Interviews With American University Students Of Chinese Origin., Aleksandra M. Adach

Research Papers

The goal of this paper is to see whether the interviewed students of American Midwestern universities born in China and in America are influenced by traditional Chinese values when making important life choices when it comes to education, work, and romantic relationships. While it is not my intention to make the results of this study generalizable to a larger population, I believe that themes and patterns observed here are worth analyzing and can constitute a starting point for larger projects to follow.

Economics Of The Firm: Identifying Factors Affecting The Performance Of Agribusiness Corporations, Casey Engel

Research Papers

This paper is about identifying the factors that affect firm performance. Many economists have attempted to explain how to define an economy based off of many different aspects, but the focus of this paper is to find out what factors affect the performance of a company. This paper discusses different economic theories, and research which is related to the topic. Then I show a few factors that I found in my research regarding how a firm performs, and finish by interpreting and discussing those factors.

The Effects Of Income Inequality On Service Sector Growth, Jeeten K. Giri Dec 2015

The Effects Of Income Inequality On Service Sector Growth, Jeeten K. Giri

Research Papers

The objective of this paper is to investigate the effects of income inequality on the service sector growth of 45 countries from the period 1971 to 2010. The countries are divided into low, middle and high income groups, and the analysis is carried out in two sub-time periods, 1971 to 1990 and 1991 to 2010. The analysis reveals that during 1971-1990, the effect of income inequality on service sector growth is negative and significant for low and middle income countries, whereas it is insignificant for high income countries. During 1991-2010 the effect of income inequality on service sector growth is …

Federal Sentencing Guidelines & United States V. Booker: Social Context And Sentencing Disparity, Jeffrey Nowacki Dec 2015

Federal Sentencing Guidelines & United States V. Booker: Social Context And Sentencing Disparity, Jeffrey Nowacki

Articles

The United States v. Booker (2005) decision rendered Federal Sentencing Guidelines advisory rather than mandatory. In the context of this decision, this study examines both the direct influence of aggregate-level political, community and administrative variables on sentencing outcomes, and the way that such characteristics might contextualize individual-level predictors. Using multi-level regression techniques, this study examines the role of aggregate level variables on sentence length decisions across four distinct time periods. Moreover, this article also examines whether aggregate-level variables condition the effects of race/ethnicity on sentencing outcomes. While the direct effects of aggregate-level variables on sentencing outcomes are generally limited to …

Naturally Striated Muscle: Investigating The Process And Consequence Of Ideographic Striation, Dustin L. Briggs Dec 2015

Naturally Striated Muscle: Investigating The Process And Consequence Of Ideographic Striation, Dustin L. Briggs

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

In U.S. America and much of the Western world, natural is a venerated symbolic placeholder for any number of assumed virtues and ideals. Present conflicts have brought forward questions about what natural (which I argue functions as an ideograph) should mean in contexts that seem to call for a formal, enforceable definition. In this study, I use the vocabulary of Deleuze and Guattari (1987) and the context of bodybuilding to work towards a theory of how ambiguous ideographs become "striated." In this discussion I present instances where natural has been employed as a vehicle to cause harm, and I offer …

Expanding The Dialogue: The Need For Fat Studies In Critical Intercultural Communication, Hannah R. Long Dec 2015

Expanding The Dialogue: The Need For Fat Studies In Critical Intercultural Communication, Hannah R. Long

Research Papers

In this paper, I argue that critical intercultural communication, as a discipline, can benefit from an inclusion of fat studies within its literature and analysis. Reciprocally, fat studies can also benefit from this relationship and the questions that would be raised for both fat studies and critical intercultural communication by such a juxtaposition of the areas of study. In particular, I employ my experiences as a fat, U.S. American woman to situate my own embodied knowledge as a way of understanding, in concert with literature reviews of fat studies and identity research within critical intercultural communication. I also utilize muted …

Inverse Inclusion: A Model For Preservice Art Teacher Training, Angela M. La Porte

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

A university community-based intercession course offers preservice art teachers a unique opportunity to experience inverse inclusion in an art class for special needs adults. Inverse inclusion allows preservice teachers to become students working side-by-side with an equal or greater number of special needs learners, and also places them in occasional roles as teacher, teacher’s assistant, and videographer. Their observations and interactions within these roles provide preservice teachers with perceptive insights and perspectives about teaching, and nurture a better understanding of special needs students’ personal interests and abilities. Applying, reflecting upon, and adapting open-ended art curriculum theory and practice from multiple …

Aligning Climate Change Adaptation Planning With Adaptive Governance: Lessons From Exeter, Nh, Semra A. Aytur, Jory S. Hecht, Paul Kirshen

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Adaptive governance has been recognized as an integrative approach for analyzing the social, institutional, ecologic, and economic aspects of decision-making to build resilience against climate change. Although closely aligned with adaptive co-management and ecosystem management, adaptive governance is a distinct framework that explicitly focuses on decentralized decision-making through social processes such as collaborative learning, networking, and the promotion of cross-sectoral partnerships to enhance adaptive capacity. In this paper, we explore an ongoing engagement process for climate change adaptation planning in Exeter, New Hampshire, and its alignment with key principles of adaptive governance. Climate change poses multiple challenges to Exeter, including …
