Utopia And Human Culture: Alternative Communities Of Higher Learning In America, Eli Orner Kramer Aug 2015

Utopia And Human Culture: Alternative Communities Of Higher Learning In America, Eli Orner Kramer

Theses

In this thesis I explore the place of the actualized utopian American alternative community of higher learning within a philosophy of human culture. I carry out such a study in order to articulate a unifying description of movement; to find the “target” that orients the activity of actualized utopia, as opposed to a classificatory rule to define a mechanically determined utopian-object. Although these communities have varied in practice since the first generation of them were created in the mid-nineteenth century, I argue that they have played, and continue to play, a particular role in America. They imagine what a world …

Truth, Justice, Boobs? Analyzing Female Empowerment And Objectification In The Graphic Novel Genre, Trisha L. Crawshaw Aug 2015

Truth, Justice, Boobs? Analyzing Female Empowerment And Objectification In The Graphic Novel Genre, Trisha L. Crawshaw

Research Papers

Female representation is a problem within the graphic novel genre. Positioned to sell as profitable commodities, women in this genre are grossly misrepresented, sexualized, and objectified. While many scholars acknowledge a problem with these debasing marketing techniques, few have critically analyzed the ways in which we sell the female body in graphic form. My project addresses the issue of female representation with special attention to body commodification. Capitalizing on my time spent working at a local comic bookstore and a series of twenty in-depth interviews that I conducted with comic book readers; I draw from a series of personal field …

Teaching Professional Networking: Students Building Contacts Outside The Classroom, Jeffery D. Kaufman, Malar Hirudayaraj, Barbara Hagler Jun 2015

Teaching Professional Networking: Students Building Contacts Outside The Classroom, Jeffery D. Kaufman, Malar Hirudayaraj, Barbara Hagler

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

This pilot study implemented a method for teaching professional networking to college business communication students. The method introduced students to data on new college graduate unemployment and underemployment, research on methods for filling open positions, and the concept of six degrees of separation. Where most examples of professional networking instruction in prior research took place exclusively in the classroom, this method required students to make and track contacts in their chosen professional fields. Student reactions were captured in reflection papers and an open response survey and analyzed qualitatively using coding and similarity comparison (Boeije, 2010). Responses were not overly surprising …

Unsupervised, Ensnared, Relational, And Private: A Typology Of Illinois’ Corrupt Women, Ryan Ceresola Jun 2015

Unsupervised, Ensnared, Relational, And Private: A Typology Of Illinois’ Corrupt Women, Ryan Ceresola

The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)

Scholars, pundits, and citizens know Illinois is at the forefront of corruption, as reported in the popular fact that four out of the last eight governors of Illinois have spent time in federal prison. We chalk up corruption to officials misusing their public role for their own private good. However, when we talk about corruption, even when we use inclusive language, we see the actor as a man, as corruption occurring in “old-boys networks,” and in dark and hidden backrooms of Springfield and Chicago, full of kickbacks and cigar smoke. What is missing from that analysis is an examination of …

Capturing Critical Whiteness: Portraits Of White Antiracist Professors, Melanie Jane Stivers May 2015

Capturing Critical Whiteness: Portraits Of White Antiracist Professors, Melanie Jane Stivers

Dissertations

This study contains qualitative portraits based on the stories of three white university professors who are nominated by their students as white allies. Through the thick description of setting and context, white privilege is named as the researcher's experience and that of each of the participants. The researcher examines ways in which each participant strives to disrupt racism. Using a lens of critical theory applied through critical pedagogy and critical whiteness philosophies, the researcher highlights the following themes as they emerge: education, exposure, empathy, and engagement. This study contributes to the literature by providing examples of white professors challenging racism …

The measures being used in this study are the Attitudes toward Marriage Scale (Kinnard & Gerrard, 1986), Attitudes towards Divorce Scale (Kinnard & Gerrard 1986), Children's Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale (Seid & Fincham 1992), Couples Satisfaction Index (Funk & Rogge 2007), Commitment Scale (Rusbult, Kusashiro, Kubabcka & Finkel 2009), and Adult Romantic Attachment Questionnaire (Frayler, Waller & Brenan 2000) . We hypothesize that parental divorce will have …

Gender Negotiations Of Female Collegiate Athletes In The Strength And Conditioning Environment: A Qualitative Analysis, Rachel I'Leene Roth May 2015

Gender Negotiations Of Female Collegiate Athletes In The Strength And Conditioning Environment: A Qualitative Analysis, Rachel I'Leene Roth

Theses

Research has shown that collegiate female athletes are oftentimes faced with negotiating meanings of their femininity and their athleticism. Athleticism has traditionally been equated with masculinity, and to be a collegiate athlete requires certain levels of skill, experience, and athletic ability. Therefore, female collegiate athletes are conflicted with managing their identities in order to avoid accusations of their sexuality, which often results in being labeled as deviant. A primary indicator of athleticism is muscularity, which is also considered a masculine trait. In order to stay within gender boundaries, female athletes may go above and beyond to emphasize their femininity, or …

Lexical Knowledge Of Verb-Particle By Saudi English Learners, Fadwi Waleed Alturki May 2015

Lexical Knowledge Of Verb-Particle By Saudi English Learners, Fadwi Waleed Alturki

Theses

Verb-particle constructions are one of the most complex components of the English language. Understanding and producing such difficult constructs in a second language (L2) is a challenge for L2 learners of English. This research was based on the study by Blais and Gonnerman (2013). The purpose of the current study was to measure American and Saudi participants' sensitivity to the degree of semantic similarity between verb/verb-particle constructions. The survey of similarity ratings was administered to 107 American native English speakers and 67 Saudi English learners. The participants were asked to rate 78 items based on their knowledge of the semantic …

Romantic Recultivating Of Self And Environment, David R. Schrappe May 2015

Romantic Recultivating Of Self And Environment, David R. Schrappe

Dissertations

My project discusses the important philosophical role that interacting with nature (as opposed to having limited access to nature preserves and the like) plays in the life of an individual. As such I discuss the biological implications for experiences of real (as contrasted with simulated) nature and, in so doing, also discuss the connection of biology to philosophy. I go on to discuss the sociological and psychological ramifications of this interactive relationship through notions such as love and community and their ties to philosophy. I then close with a discussion of the necessity of artistic expression and how those endeavors …

The Effect Of Racial Status And Other Core Characteristics On Collective Self-Esteem A Quantitative Test Of Divergent Theories Of Identity Valuation, Wilfred Reilly May 2015

The Effect Of Racial Status And Other Core Characteristics On Collective Self-Esteem A Quantitative Test Of Divergent Theories Of Identity Valuation, Wilfred Reilly

Dissertations

The question of why individuals value identities like race and gender is a contested one. Scholars in the Reflected Appraisals tradition argue that members of minority groups experience identity devaluation and minority stress (Hacker 1992; Harris 1993; Meyer 1995; Tatum 1997; Hoff-Sommers 2000; McIntyre 2002) and come to value their identities less in empirical terms than do members of equivalent majority groups (Harris 1993; Hacker 1995). The thesis here is that the values individuals place upon in-group identities are determined by the prestige and power of their in-groups (Cornell and Hartmann 2006: 60). This argument has been advanced often in …

Markerless Facial Motion Capture, Sara J. Saito Apr 2015

Markerless Facial Motion Capture, Sara J. Saito

Research Papers

With the ever-rising capabilities of motion capture systems; this project explored markerless facial motion capture programs using the Kinect Sensor for Xbox. Many systems today still use markers and end up retargeting after a motion capture recording. This project used a simpler process of setting up and being able to display the effects live. An off-the-shelf system was built using a computer, a Kinect Sensor, a plug-in from Brekel, and Autodesk software. The first goal was to create a process that was able to capture and project live facial motion for fewer than $500 USD. Anything over $500 USD was …

Conspecific Aggression By Beavers (Castor Canadensis) In The Sangamon River Basin In Central Illinois: Correlates With Habitat, Age, Sex And Season, Joanne C. Crawford, Robert D. Bluett, Eric M. Schauber Jan 2015

Conspecific Aggression By Beavers (Castor Canadensis) In The Sangamon River Basin In Central Illinois: Correlates With Habitat, Age, Sex And Season, Joanne C. Crawford, Robert D. Bluett, Eric M. Schauber

Publications

Conspecific aggression may play an important role in partitioning resources and maintaining territories among beavers (Castor canadensis), yet few studies have examined physical evidence of agonistic encounters. We trapped and examined pelts from 147 beavers harvested between 2006 and 2012 from the Sangamon River (n  =  96) and tributary streams (n  =  51) in central Illinois. We modeled the influence of sex, age class, season (predispersal or dispersal), and habitat (river or tributary stream) on the number of recent injuries caused by conspecifics. One-third (51/147) of beavers had ≥1 injury; of those, the median number of injuries was …

On Women And Running: A Feminist Rhetorical Investigation Into The Political And Ontological Implications Of Consciousness-Raising Via The Sharing Of Women's Running Stories, Janelle Leann Briggs Dec 2014

On Women And Running: A Feminist Rhetorical Investigation Into The Political And Ontological Implications Of Consciousness-Raising Via The Sharing Of Women's Running Stories, Janelle Leann Briggs

Dissertations

The goal of my dissertation is to further our understanding of the political ramifications of women's running stories by focusing on the intersections of feminist rhetoric, women in sports studies, political theory, and ontology. To this end, I examined six books written by women, about women, who participate in the sport of running. Since I am most interested in how gendered concepts teach us how to be "appropriate," and due to the fact that what is considered appropriate gendered behavior changes over time, I start from a place of understanding that "appropriateness" is necessarily both hegemonic and unstable. As a …

Paper People And Digital Memory: Recreating The Public And Private In Japan, Meghan Sarah Fidler Dec 2014

Paper People And Digital Memory: Recreating The Public And Private In Japan, Meghan Sarah Fidler

Dissertations

This research examines how reading and writing on digital platforms establishes public and private spheres in Tokyo, Japan. Based upon findings from a group of students at an international University, I develop new modes of thinking about people and their use of Internet capable devices by exploring the paradoxes present in contemporary literacies. Contextualizing reading and writing within the speech patterns and exchange rituals (aisatsu) which mark public spheres in Japan, writing practices are found to reflect multiple nuanced identity performances in which the varied use of the cultural principles uchi/soto (inside/outside) and ura/omote (back/front) create parallel publics. Constructed by …

"I Don't Want To Hurt Anyone's Feelings": Using Race As A Writing Prompt In First Year Writing, Dianna Shank Dec 2014

"I Don't Want To Hurt Anyone's Feelings": Using Race As A Writing Prompt In First Year Writing, Dianna Shank

Dissertations

First Year Composition (FYC) is one of the most important courses for any incoming college student. This course (often designated as English 101) provides students the rhetorical tools to fully engage in critical thinking and writing on the college level. One of the most common methods of organizing FYC is to use a topic as the center of all the reading and writing prompts. The use of outside subject matter to teach FYC is a common practice that is rarely interrogated for its effectiveness. However, the Hairston debate in the early 1990s opened up a public discussion of how FYC …

Bahktin And The Carnivalesque: Calling For A Balanced Analysis Within Organizational Communication Studies, Renata Kolodziej-Smith Nov 2014

Bahktin And The Carnivalesque: Calling For A Balanced Analysis Within Organizational Communication Studies, Renata Kolodziej-Smith

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Bakhtin’s perspective and concepts have generated great interest in American and Western European academic circles in recent years. This review describes Bakhtin’s concept of carnivalesque and how it has been utilized in organizational communication research. The synopsis of the carnival application in organizational communication scholarship shows, however, very limited usage of a Burkean approach to Bakhtinian theory. In this paper, I call for a more balanced application of Bakhtinian carnival concept in the organizational communication field by including both Goffman’s and Burke’s frameworks to analyze organizational communication.

Supplemental Aesthetics: Techniques In Live Performance, Meggie Mapes Nov 2014

Supplemental Aesthetics: Techniques In Live Performance, Meggie Mapes

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

In this essay, I make a bid for the incorporation of the Derridian supplement into aesthetic discourses as a means of understanding and evaluating live performance. I call this move “supplemental aesthetics,” which, in the end, expands the vocabulary of absence and presence. I contend that a method of supplemental aesthetics adapts Derridian vocabulary to account for the intertextual and multisensory experience of live performance, asking practitioners and scholars to account for both the present and absent aspects of staged production. Supplemental aesthetics encourages a dialectic understanding of aesthetics: we make meaning by the simultaneous experience of reading what is …

Reproductive Surveillance: The Making Of Pregnant Docile Bodies, Molly Wiant Cummins Nov 2014

Reproductive Surveillance: The Making Of Pregnant Docile Bodies, Molly Wiant Cummins

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

In this paper, I consider how the female body is disciplined utilizing Foucault’s notion of the panoptic gaze. I build upon his insights concerning societal surveillance by examining how the pregnant body is disciplined to fit into four general categories. I first review literature about pregnant women and find that most scholarship frames pregnant women in four ways: women are disciplined to be commodified, to be selfless, to protect the fetus, and to respond willingly to the medical gaze. I then further this line of inquiry to consider how the reproductively primed body (i.e., a female that has reached menarche) …

An Empirical Analysis Of The Role Of Geography In Sustainability Education, Makayla Jane Bonney Aug 2014

An Empirical Analysis Of The Role Of Geography In Sustainability Education, Makayla Jane Bonney

Theses

Many within and outside of the discipline of geography see it as a highly appropriate home for sustainability studies. Despite a history of human-environment education within geography and support from professional research or education organizations, some studies show that geography has not developed a lead role in sustainability education. This study examines the role of geography in offering "Sustainability Focused" courses as reported by AASHE STARS institutions with geography programs. The results show that although geography departments are highly utilized when available at an institution -offering the highest proportion of sustainability courses, averaging 14% of "Sustainability Focused" curriculum- there is …
