The Effects Of Pregnancy On Student Progress, Sarah Hope Steinkamp May 2017

The Effects Of Pregnancy On Student Progress, Sarah Hope Steinkamp

Dissertations

Ample evidence exists establishing the relationship between pregnancy during high school and subsequent educational difficulties, yet little research has investigated the relationship between pregnancy during college and subsequent educational difficulties. The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship exists between pregnancy in undergraduate college students and educational attainment and to determine the strength and direction of said relationship. A quantitative research approach composed of historical medical and retention data was utilized. Vincent Tinto’s theory of student departure was applied to frame the use of experience of pregnancy diagnosis as a variable related to retention. Findings indicate a …

Hegemonic Masculinity And Transphobia, Marilyn Chung May 2017

Hegemonic Masculinity And Transphobia, Marilyn Chung

Theses

Transphobia research has focused on predictors and correlations of prejudice toward transgender people. Consistently, male participants have higher transphobic attitudes compared to female participants in various studies. Further, males are overrepresented in crimes against transgender people. However, these studies were correlational and causation cannot be determined. Masculinity researchers outside of psychology have discussed maintenance of masculine privilege as a motivator for oppressive beliefs and actions. Thus, the goal of this study was to provide an experimental study of causes for increased transphobic attitudes in men, based on sociological and gender studies’ research on hegemonic masculinity. To test this, participants were …

The Transferability Of Soft Skills Of Women Veterans To Corporate America, Chanty Bradley Clay May 2017

The Transferability Of Soft Skills Of Women Veterans To Corporate America, Chanty Bradley Clay

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the transfer of soft skills of women veterans to their post military career in corporate America in order to support their career success by helping them market and utilize their soft skills and experience in their post military career, and to better understand the employability issues of women veterans. Thorndike and Woodworth’s (1901) Identical Elements Theory was used to better understand how women veterans transferred learning in one context (military) to another similar context (corporate America) and their identification, marketability, and utilization of these learned soft skills to the workforce. A narrative …

Comparative Assessment Of Agricultural Literacy In Selected K-5 Classrooms Employing Agriculture In The Classroom Methodologies: A Solomon Four-Group Analysis, Mary Margaret Fischer May 2017

Comparative Assessment Of Agricultural Literacy In Selected K-5 Classrooms Employing Agriculture In The Classroom Methodologies: A Solomon Four-Group Analysis, Mary Margaret Fischer

Dissertations

The significance of agriculture to future generations is unparalleled. The United Nations projects the global population to swell to 9.75 billion people by 2050, and to proliferate to 11.2 billion by 2100. The non-agricultural population has little to no understanding or comprehension of the complexities of sustaining a viable agricultural system. Agricultural literacy is an area often unseen and rarely discussed outside specific agricultural disciplines. Society does not view agriculture as being important, yet it is important that society be properly educated on issues in order to reach well-informed decisions and render prudent choices that impact the world around them. …

In Pursuit Of A Black Identity In Contemporary South Africa: Culture, Class, And Gender In Wedding Reality Tv Shows, Tv Audience Comments, And Wedding Speeches, Lindani Memani May 2017

In Pursuit Of A Black Identity In Contemporary South Africa: Culture, Class, And Gender In Wedding Reality Tv Shows, Tv Audience Comments, And Wedding Speeches, Lindani Memani

Dissertations

This research reveals the opaque social hierarchies which work to structure Black life in contemporary South Africa. Using a multi-modal critical discourse analysis, and four theories: hegemony, neoliberalism, post-feminism and African womanism, this study analyzes the representation of weddings in Our Perfect Wedding and Top Billing Weddings, two South African wedding reality television programs. In addition, the study examines the TV programs’ audience narratives in online spaces. Analyzing online conversations helps to show how audiences actively engage with and interpret messages disseminated by the TV shows as they talk back to the shows and among themselves. The study also examines …

Misfits In The Front Of The Classroom: Poetic Narratives Of Teaching With A Hidden Disability, Nicole C. Eugene Feb 2017

Misfits In The Front Of The Classroom: Poetic Narratives Of Teaching With A Hidden Disability, Nicole C. Eugene

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Instructors with a hidden disability may choose to talk with their students about their disability, they may choose to pass as normal, or they may deal with their disability in ways that challenge the binary of showing/hiding. Communication about disabilities occurs in contexts that provide a range of possible cultural values that can work to reinforce an individual’s sense of belonging to a group or organization. To examine how graduate students negotiate their disability or illness in the classroom context, I conducted three interviews with graduate instructors addressing how they communicate their disability in the classes they teach. I learned …

(Re)Defining Transnational Identities Through Diaspora Philanthropy In South Asian Indian Non-Profit Organisations, Noorie Baig Feb 2017

(Re)Defining Transnational Identities Through Diaspora Philanthropy In South Asian Indian Non-Profit Organisations, Noorie Baig

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Abstract

This paper identifies “diaspora philanthropy” as an important dimension to maintaining transnational identities among South Asian Indian Americans. Several South Asian initiatives and organisations promote involvement to the motherland (homeland) as individuals negotiate a sense of belonging in a migrant context. It is important to explore the motivations behind this new type of socio-political activism that is fuelled by a sense of responsibility to the motherland. I examine three non-government, South Asian Indian organisation websites that are shaped by globalisation, as a means explore new trends in diaspora philanthropy. A critical intercultural communication framework is used to explore how …

American Nationalism And The “Curse Of Rurality”: Urban-Rural Differences And The Notion Of National Belonging, Milos Djeric Jan 2017

American Nationalism And The “Curse Of Rurality”: Urban-Rural Differences And The Notion Of National Belonging, Milos Djeric

Research Papers

Relationship between nationalism and urban or rural environment is not one that is often studied, apart from traditional historical interpretation of it being a modern, urban phenomenon, characterized by imagery and discourse of rurality. Yet it seems that, in the last several decades, not only have nationalist conflicts mostly been rooted within the countryside and nationalist agendas won on elections in them, but that there is a more fundamental connection between nationalism and rurality. While briefly addressing this issue, this paper focuses on the analysis of 2014 GSS data, exploring the relationship between the place of living and the notion …

United States governmental agencies, departments, and affiliates, are increasingly making 3D printable models available to the general public online. On March 20, 2014, a memorandum was sent out to United States executive departments and agencies about improving access to the government’s scientific collections (Holdren, 2014). This memorandum, from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), not only addressed physical collections, but specifically mentioned digital 3D models. On the White House’s blog, several reasons were given for making these collections more accessible including the idea that these collections are “… treasure troves of information ripe for exploration and …

Adaptive Water Governance: Integrating The Human Dimensions Into Water Resource Governance, Kofi Akamani Aug 2016

Adaptive Water Governance: Integrating The Human Dimensions Into Water Resource Governance, Kofi Akamani

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

The command-and-control paradigm of water resource management that dominated 20th century water policy has resulted in vulnerabilities due to its inadequate consideration of the human dimensions as well as its failure to prioritize the need for learning and adapting to change and uncertainties. In response to these shortfalls, recent years have seen the emergence of alternative water policy frameworks, notably integrated water resource management (IWRM) and adaptive management. However, while IWRM broadens the planning goals and scope of water resource governance through integration and coordination across scales and sectors, it does not adequately emphasize learning to deal with uncertainty. On …

Water And Society: Interdisciplinary Education In Natural Resources, Laszlo J. Kulcsar, Joseph A. Aistrup, Thomas Bulatewicz, Jeffrey M. Peterson, Stephen M. Welch, David R. Steward Aug 2016

Water And Society: Interdisciplinary Education In Natural Resources, Laszlo J. Kulcsar, Joseph A. Aistrup, Thomas Bulatewicz, Jeffrey M. Peterson, Stephen M. Welch, David R. Steward

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Natural resource management and education must account for both the natural and human components of a complex system, yet examples of such interdisciplinary approaches are still relatively rare, especially in education. This study discusses a graduate seminar on water management, developed from an interdisciplinary National Science Foundation (NSF) grant. The seminar applied constructivist pedagogy which is not only best suited for interdisciplinary work, but also allows flexibility to redesign the course components and deliverables after each evaluation cycle. While the seminar was a successful experiment, several challenges remain when implementing such courses. These challenges include not only the organization and …

Deliberating On Missouri River Water Diversions In Congressional Committee Hearings, Sarah Michaels, Mike Gruszczynski Aug 2016

Deliberating On Missouri River Water Diversions In Congressional Committee Hearings, Sarah Michaels, Mike Gruszczynski

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

We examine the discursive influence of competing interest groups and how and when U.S. federal legislators use empirical evidence to consider Missouri River diversion projects originating in the relief, recovery, and reform thinking behind President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. Twelve U.S. Congressional committee hearings that occurred between 1944 and 2006 are content analyzed to demonstrate the nature of instrumental arguments in legislative deliberations. Members of Congress in favor of diversion projects used more economic-based, instrumental arguments than interest group representatives sharing their views while members of Congress opposed to the diversion projects consistently used less science-based, instrumental arguments than …

Institutional Constraints To Collaborative Ecosystem Management Within A Wetlands Conservation Partnership, Jennifer A. Behnken, John W. Groninger, Kofi Akamani Aug 2016

Institutional Constraints To Collaborative Ecosystem Management Within A Wetlands Conservation Partnership, Jennifer A. Behnken, John W. Groninger, Kofi Akamani

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Recent decades have seen an evolution in resource management paradigms from the multiple use and sustained yield toward ecosystem management. This ongoing paradigm shift has generated interest in collaborative decision-making as a more promising alternative to conventional top down institutions. While a collaborative approach to ecosystem management promises several benefits, including equity, efficiency, and sustainability, institutional constraints often impede the success of these initiatives. Using the Cache River Joint Venture Partnership in southern Illinois, USA as a case study, this study employed a qualitative research approach to understand how various institutional attributes influence prospects for conflict and cooperation in collaborative …

Building Watershed Management Capacity In Nigeria: Expanding The Role Of Agriculture Colleges, John W. Groninger Aug 2016

Building Watershed Management Capacity In Nigeria: Expanding The Role Of Agriculture Colleges, John W. Groninger

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Developing countries face many critical social, agricultural, and natural resource-related issues where watershed management plays a prominent role. Short-term gains in productivity often occur at the expense of long term system resiliency needed to achieve sustainability. Post-secondary (tertiary) education institutions are underfunded and hampered by bureaucratic inertia limiting their relevance toward addressing emerging water resources concerns. As populations urbanize, rural constituencies continue to lose influence. Using the case of Samaru College of Agriculture, part of Ahmadu Bello University in north-central Nigeria, this paper identifies institutional challenges and suggests solutions to help similar institutions better address watershed management issues. Given current …

User Determinism: A Study Of The Determination Of Gratifications On The Uses Of China’S Wechat, Bowen Gao

Research Papers

Modern social media have been being multi-functionalized. Some social media companies add more functions to their products in order to gratify more personal needs of their customers. Contrary to devoting to gratify users’ needs, some other media companies make smart marketing strategies, which aim to influence consumers’ behavior for motivating them to conduct financial transactions. However, marketing strategies are only effective in a certain period on a certain group of people. In contrast, gratifying users’ needs is always an effective way to obtain a large amount of users.

A Noble Dream: The Inter-American Studies Program At Southern Illinois University, Carbondale (1958-1985), Colin T. White May 2016

A Noble Dream: The Inter-American Studies Program At Southern Illinois University, Carbondale (1958-1985), Colin T. White

Honors Theses

This essay explores the rise and fall of the Inter-American studies program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The Inter-American Studies Program attempted to bridge two distinctive bodies of academic literature when Dr. Albert Bork first envisioned it. Unlike other programs founded in the 1950s, SIU’s Inter-American Studies program was an academic experiment challenging that emerging trend. Regardless of its failure, the program’s original idea was innovative.

When Affirmative Action Is White: Italian Americans In The City University Of New York, 1976 – Present, Liana Kirillova

2016

In 1976, the City University of New York (CUNY) unprecedentedly included Italian Americans in its affirmative action policy, providing them with the status of a designated minority. At the moment, CUNY is the only place where Italian Americans have gained such privileges alongside federally recognized racial and ethnic groups. This historically unique decision has significantly influenced the Italian American community in New York. Yet the question remains: have they made satisfactory progress as a group? Tracing the dynamics in their relations with CUNY authorities, today one can detect a high level of dissatisfaction among Italian American faculty. Additionally, it is …

Cracking The World System: Mediating Public Pedagogies From The “World Revolution” Of 1848, James Kepley Anderson May 2016

Cracking The World System: Mediating Public Pedagogies From The “World Revolution” Of 1848, James Kepley Anderson

Dissertations

This project adopts the framework of World Systems Analysis [WSA], formulated by global sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein, to take the entire world system as the unit of analysis. Drawing on the work of Paulo Freire, the seminal theorist of critical pedagogy, this project couples WSA with the analytic lens of public pedagogy to overcome the conceptual limitations of ideology and of various postmodern critiques. Primary media sources are used for purposes of critical political economy, to outline the contours of economic changes and class formations from the first world revolution. A detailed descriptive history of the revolutions that swept across Europe …
