Perceived Barriers To Employment For Older Displaced Workers, Luther M. Maddy Iii, John C. Cannon Jan 2019

Perceived Barriers To Employment For Older Displaced Workers, Luther M. Maddy Iii, John C. Cannon

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

This study attempted to determine if age was perceived as a barrier to employment for unemployed individuals above 40 years of age. The social cognitive career theory formed the foundation of this study. Job search self-efficacy was measured in 116 unemployed individuals in three states. An independent samples t test was calculated to compare the mean job search self-efficacy scores of the participants above the age of 40 to the scores of the younger participants. No significant difference was found (t(114) = 1.05, p > .05). Linear regression analysis computed a regression equation that was not significant (F …

There was one block of apples selected and one block of peaches, both of which had the most harvest records available for use. There has been minimal research done …

Cultural Naturalism And The Market God, David Timothy Denenny Dec 2018

Cultural Naturalism And The Market God, David Timothy Denenny

Theses

This work employs John Dewey's cultural naturalism to explore how and why the orthodox economic tradition functions as a religious faith.Scholars such as the theologian Harvey Cox and others now view orthodox economic practice as a religion. Other scholars such as Max Weber, Alasdair MacIntyre, and numerous others view modern economic practice as exemplifying a particular ethic. The focus in this work is placed upon the destructive consequences of practicing the Market faith. This work argues that much of contemporary economic practice maintains a view of science that is incompatible with the kind of naturalism found in Classical American Pragmatism. …

Engaging Stakeholders In Planning For Sea Level Rise And Resilience, Juita-Elena (Wie) Yusuf, Burton St. John, Michelle Covi, J. Gail Nicula Sep 2018

Engaging Stakeholders In Planning For Sea Level Rise And Resilience, Juita-Elena (Wie) Yusuf, Burton St. John, Michelle Covi, J. Gail Nicula

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

This case study describes a region-wide, multi-sectoral, and whole-of-community stakeholder engagement approach for addressing sea level rise (SLR) and flooding. This approach was implemented through a university-led community engagement event, the Hampton Roads Resilient Region Reality Check (H4RC), which allowed an examination of its effectiveness as a mechanism for capturing community-wide perceptions regarding SLR, flooding, and associated risks; engaging stakeholders in discussion within and across different groups; and assessing community willingness to address flooding and SLR. The results show that the event helped participants broaden their perspectives and understanding of flooding and SLR. In an approach that called for participants …

Adaptive Water Governance And Community Resilience: Assessing The Impact Of The Cache River Wetlands Joint Venture Partnership On Communities In The Cache River Watershed Of Southern Illinois, Rachel Emeline Boucher

Theses

Resilience is a concept that is becoming heavily researched in the sustainability and resource management literature. For rural resource-dependent communities, community resilience is the ability to adapt to various drivers of change while maintaining or enhancing community well-being. In recent decades, the field of water resource governance has been transitioning from a reliance on command-and-control institutional structures toward adaptive multi-level institutions, such as adaptive co-management and adaptive governance. These transitions offer potential opportunities for enhancing the resilience and sustainability of resource-dependent communities. However, the relationship between these emerging governance approaches and community resilience is not fully understood. The Cache River …

Tribal Economies: Water Settlements, Agriculture, And Gaming In The Western U.S., Suhina Deol, Bonnie Colby

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

This paper examines patterns in water rights quantification, agriculture, gaming, and economic characteristics across selected Native American nations in the United States (U.S.) to provide a perspective across tribal nations and regions. A unique set of data was analyzed, drawing from the U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Department of Agriculture, court decrees, water rights data, and other sources. Fifty-one tribal nations are included in this study, based on availability of data on agricultural and economic indicators. Data analysis indicates the following: 1) tribes with quantified water rights also have higher agricultural revenue, 2) tribes which have quantified their water rights are …

Assessing Tribal College Priorities For Enhancing Climate Adaptation On Reservation Lands, Helen M. Fillmore, Loretta Singletary, John Phillips May 2018

Assessing Tribal College Priorities For Enhancing Climate Adaptation On Reservation Lands, Helen M. Fillmore, Loretta Singletary, John Phillips

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

On reservation lands, tribal colleges and universities (TCUs) are key to preparing indigenous communities to adapt to the effects of a changing climate. The original mission of TCUs, to improve access to higher education and to sustain the cultural heritage of indigenous people, facilitates close ties between TCU faculty and staff and the indigenous communities they serve. Since 1994, the land-grant status of TCUs allows access to limited federal funds in support of research, education, and outreach to improve food security, natural resource management, and rural quality of life, while expanding public access to higher education to underserved populations in …

The Impact Of Transnational Nonprofit Work On The Development Of Becoming A Global Citizen, Penny Bowser May 2018

The Impact Of Transnational Nonprofit Work On The Development Of Becoming A Global Citizen, Penny Bowser

Honors Theses

Global citizens dive into the culture of a country and adopt new ideology, customs, and traditions, while maintaining their own cultural identity. This paper explores how a nonprofit organization has the ability to provide the necessary resources for a volunteer to expand upon their global citizenry. Nonprofits were created for economic, historical, and professional reasons, then are divided into categories depending upon the goal of the organization. Volunteers choose to serve at nonprofits for social, personal, and professional reasons, but will all make an impact on the people they are serving, despite the reason. By volunteering with a transnational nonprofit …

Experiences Of Gay And Lesbian Students At A Rural Midwestern Community College, Kristin N. Shelby May 2018

Experiences Of Gay And Lesbian Students At A Rural Midwestern Community College, Kristin N. Shelby

Dissertations

Currently, a gap exists in the research on gay and lesbian students in community colleges. In this qualitative study, I examine experiences of gay and lesbian students in a rural, Midwestern community college. The literature review consists of a review of gay and lesbian student emergence in higher education, coming out, the relationship between sexuality and rurality, and a brief overview of two of the first sexual identity models. This qualitative design incorporates primarily phenomenological and narrative research. Data collection includes narratives from the interviews with nine community college student participants. Data from the participant narratives is organized under four …

Marketing Within Student Affairs: What Is The Silver Bullet?, Sydne Rensing

Research Papers

Many universities struggle with student engagement on their campuses. The word “engagement” covers a broad spectrum of involvement and could be anything from attending events or programs, recreational activities at the student union, participating in contests, being a part of Greek life or registered student organizations, to following campus departments on social media or having a student job. Because involvement plays such a significant role in the overall university experience, it is vital to understand the needs of the current student population, market correctly, and encourage experiences outside of the classroom that will enhance students’ education and cultivate a well-rounded …

"We Heard Canada Was A Free Country": African American Migration In The Great Plains, 1890-1911, Rachel M. Wolters Dec 2017

"We Heard Canada Was A Free Country": African American Migration In The Great Plains, 1890-1911, Rachel M. Wolters

Dissertations

This study uses a transnational lens to examine the migration of Black Americans from Oklahoma to Canada in the early 20th century. Although scholars have documented this movement, they have not fully explored the vital and durable transnational connections among African American immigrants themselves. The use of family histories, newspaper articles, and immigration files show how black migrants searched for land and equality in Canada and attempted to build all black communities. Encouraged by the promises of Canadian immigration recruiters, black migrants left their homes and Jim Crowism in Oklahoma to settle in a “free country” and to realize the …

Kneeling But Still Singing: Threshold Identity, Disidentification, And Invitation In U.S. American National Anthem Protest, Michael L. Forst Nov 2017

Kneeling But Still Singing: Threshold Identity, Disidentification, And Invitation In U.S. American National Anthem Protest, Michael L. Forst

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Driven by a desire to transcend current divisive political and social discourse, this article analyzes Denasia Lawrence’s 2016 U.S. national anthem performance and Black Lives Matter protest. Lawrence knelt while performing the anthem to protest biased policing practices in the U.S. In engaging Lawrence’s actions and statements about this event through rhetorical criticism, I employ theories of intercultural hybridity (threshold identity and disidentification) and invitational rhetoric to demonstrate the inherent potentials for political activism in her act. I assert that Lawrence’s embodied performance invites viewers to re/consider the multilayered implications of her protest, and to hopefully engage with differences more …

Organizational Decline And Fiscal Distress In Municipal Police Agencies, Matthew Giblin, Jeffrey Nowacki Nov 2017

Organizational Decline And Fiscal Distress In Municipal Police Agencies, Matthew Giblin, Jeffrey Nowacki

Articles

In late 2007, the United States entered one of the most significant recessions in recent memory. While the consequences to individuals have been well-documented, less attention has been paid to the effects on state-sponsored organizations such as police agencies. The current study examines fiscal distress (e.g., layoffs, hiring freezes) in a sample of large municipal law enforcement agencies. According to a framework proposed by Levine (1978), departments should be most vulnerable to fiscal distress when the jurisdiction experiences economic shocks (environmental entropy), the demand for police services declines (problem depletion), the political system becomes less supportive of police agencies (political …

Unfriending Hawthorne, Walter C. Metz

Publications

This essay examines the use of 1980s romantic comedies, particularly the films of John Hughes, by the film, Easy A (Will Gluck, 2010). I use an intertextual approach to adaptation studies to link one of the film's source texts, Can't Buy Me Love (Steve Rush, 1987) to Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter (1850).

Behavioral Interventions For Sexual Deviancy In Individuals With Developmental Disorders, Samuel Krus Sep 2017

Behavioral Interventions For Sexual Deviancy In Individuals With Developmental Disorders, Samuel Krus

Research Papers

Statistical analyses have found a significant proportion of crime is of a sexual nature and that reducing its occurrence is a complex problem that has had various solutions proposed. Therapy programs that focus on the reduction of sexually deviant behavior have been proposed by many clinicians and researchers in the psychological and rehabilitative fields which have shown varying degrees of success. As treatments have been developed across multiple disciplines there have been many paradigms developed around the development and corresponding treatment of sexually deviant behavior. Along with addressing the behavior itself, many programs have sought to address sexual deviancy based …

Impact Of Political Identity And Past Crisis Experience On Water Attitudes, Coy Callison, Derrick Holland Sep 2017

Impact Of Political Identity And Past Crisis Experience On Water Attitudes, Coy Callison, Derrick Holland

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

With stories of regional diminishing water resources and tainted municipal water supplies consistently populating the news, a nationwide survey was conducted to gauge overall concern and attitudes toward water scarcity and water pollution, as well as scientists and scientific information regarding water crises. Of particular interest was the question of how political ideology and past experience with scarcity and/or pollution impact pro-water attitudes and intention to exhibit positive water behaviors. Multivariate analyses of data suggest that Liberals are more concerned about water scarcity and pollution and more likely to conserve and combat pollution than their Conservative counterparts. People who have …

The Prevalence Of Religious Service Attendance In America: A Review And Meta-Analysis, Chad S. Briggs Aug 2017

The Prevalence Of Religious Service Attendance In America: A Review And Meta-Analysis, Chad S. Briggs

Dissertations

The Gallup Poll and General Social Survey have asked Americans about their religious service attendance since 1939 and 1972, respectively. With remarkable consistency, these two surveys have estimated that just over 40% of the American population regularly attends religious services. Yet, recent research has called this “gold standard” into question, citing three sources of bias in these estimates: (a) ambiguous item wording, (b) an ambiguously specified time frame; and (c) data collection methods that lend themselves to socially desirable responding. Several lines of research have developed to eliminate or minimize these sources of bias, but these efforts have yielded a …

Finding Home: Diasporic Community Building In A Rural U.S. Town, Debadatta Chakraborty Jun 2017

Finding Home: Diasporic Community Building In A Rural U.S. Town, Debadatta Chakraborty

Research Papers

A substantial Indian immigrant population in the U.S. resides beyond the major metropolitan areas. Yet studies on Indian diaspora are focused on big cities, with relatively limited literature on diasporic communities in the smaller cities and towns. This study addresses this gap by understanding how the diasporic ‘Indian’ community in a small U.S. (rural-University) town makes sense of the Indian culture and forms a sense of community, without having the cultural resources of big cities. It explores the way gender, religion, age, race and ethnicity are negotiated in the creation of a ‘home away from home’, and the way cultural …

Alternative Agriculture Characteristics In Zimbabwe: Experts Views, Plaxedes Chitiyo, Leslie A. Duram

Publications

Policy makers, Non-Governmental Organizations, and environmental experts advocate for alternative agriculture to revive the agricultural sector in Zimbabwe and address climate change and environmental degradation. However, alternative agriculture is underdeveloped and the concept lacks clarity within the country’s context thereby undermining its expansion. Using qualitative research design comprising of semistructured interviews with eight experts actively involved in alternative agriculture promotion in Zimbabwe, this study was conducted to identify key attributes of alternative agriculture and the associated activities in the country. Findings from the study revealed that consumer food perceptions and international agencies marginalized alternative agriculture. To counteract marginalization, advocates were …
