Shailer Mathews: A Modernist’S Search For The Christian God, John Haller Jr
Shailer Mathews: A Modernist’S Search For The Christian God, John Haller Jr
Shailer Mathews: A Modernist’s Search for the Christian God
The liberal theologian, historian, and sociologist Shailer Mathews (1863-1941), dean of the University of Chicago Divinity School from 1908 to 1933, played a leadership role in the Social Gospel movement as well as advocating modernist thought. No enemy of science, he saw religion and science, including evolutionary theory and the higher criticism, as integral to making the universe intelligible to humankind. Although he did not agree that evolution could be trusted to bring about a better world, he transformed the Divinity School’s pedagogy into a pragmatic, action-oriented, empirical, and socio-historical bastion of inquiry to acquire the true meaning of the …
The Benefits Of Dating Apps, Valeria Beltran
The Benefits Of Dating Apps, Valeria Beltran
2021
Online platforms such as Tinder, where one swipes through nearby potential partners until there’s a match, have completely taken over dating in the modern world. With its benefits and drawbacks, online dating has become more common over the years for users of all ages. Although many may focus on the negative sides of dating apps, there are plenty of positives that make the apps desirable to its users. The ability to find potential partners from one’s phone at any time while also determining what that relationship will entail before meeting face to face are both beneficial aspects of dating online. …

Challenging The Dominant Representation Of Immigrant Latinas In The United States: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Personal Stories Of Latina Pioneers From The 1950-1970s, Scarlett Rodriguez
Challenging The Dominant Representation Of Immigrant Latinas In The United States: A Qualitative Analysis Of The Personal Stories Of Latina Pioneers From The 1950-1970s, Scarlett Rodriguez
Research Papers
The dominant representations of Latinx immigrants in the U.S. media do a disservice to the humanity of this group and overwhelmingly depict them in negative ways. This paper is an effort to counter these narratives and humanize the experiences of Latina immigrants. Specifically, it explores and analyzes four personal narratives from Latina women who migrated to the United States between 1950-1970s. The methodological approach in this report is qualitative and interpretive analysis, using open and axial coding. The author discusses how identities are constructed and shaped by the experiences of immigration, and connects it to extant research on power, coloniality, …
Citizens' Opinions Regarding A Checkout Bag Tax Proposal, Jorden Thomas
Citizens' Opinions Regarding A Checkout Bag Tax Proposal, Jorden Thomas
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
The need to address single-use plastic bag damage to our environment has grown exponentially across the globe. States and communities are taking legislative action to address the harm produced through the form of taxation and/or plastic bag bans. This paper provides insight into the contradictory evidence that is cited in favor or opposition to such legislation across the globe. Further, this paper seeks to determine the positions of Illinois citizens on their willingness to support a state-wide tax or ban on all plastic shopping bags received from retail establishments through the use of public opinion polling. Finally, the impacts of …
Conversations With Each Other: Love Songs To The Earth, Adrian M. Downey, Gonen Sagy
Conversations With Each Other: Love Songs To The Earth, Adrian M. Downey, Gonen Sagy
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
Conversation is a complicated, ever-changing, and dynamic space—a space which is foundational to both education and curriculum, broadly conceived. In this article, we continue our ongoing conversion through the notion of writing love songs to the Earth and to each other. Within the conversation, Gonen shares original poetry emergent from his lived experiences, while Adrian attends to Gonen’s poetry in prosaic response. In this, the socio-political moment of the Canadian movement toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, we view our relationship and our conversations as speaking back to the competitive languages of diasporic space and Indigenous place through an …

U.S. Higher Education In The Construction Of “Good” And “Bad” Immigrants: Foreign-Born Faculty’S Tales Of Sexism, Racism, And Xenophobia At Work, Debaleena Ghosh
Dissertations
In this dissertation, I explore the experiences of immigrant (i.e. foreign-born) faculty in the U.S. academy, especially during a trying period of time—Donald Trump’s presidency—when anti-immigrant sentiments and rhetoric have heightened in America. Specifically, I explore how in the Trump era, gender, race, ethnic (national) origin, cultural background, and foreign-born status intersect to shape immigrant faculty’s experiences at the individual, interpersonal, and organizational level, including the privileges they enjoy and/or the penalties they pay based on their multiple social locations and ethnic culture—a group occasionally studied. Finally, I explore how the organizational and departmental culture of diversity enables the faculty …
Experiences Of Participants In An Introductory Weight Training Program, April Martinez
Experiences Of Participants In An Introductory Weight Training Program, April Martinez
Research Papers
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of a 6-week structured introductory weight training program on individuals’ efficacy using a mixed methods approach. Variables were assessed to examine psychological factors using a self-efficacy scale. Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) was used to access interest/enjoyment, perceived competence and value/usefulness of the intervention weight training program. In addition, post-intervention individual interviews were conducted to examine exercise history, intervention enjoyment, goals, motivation, adherence, and other various factors influencing exercise intervention involvement. Because the quantitative survey data was not able to be collected post-intervention, the focus of the discussion was on the …
Collective Protesting As Existential Communication: A Phenomenology Of Risk, Responsibility, And Ethical Attendance, L. Shelley Rawlins
Collective Protesting As Existential Communication: A Phenomenology Of Risk, Responsibility, And Ethical Attendance, L. Shelley Rawlins
Dissertations
This dissertation explores the experience of participating in collective protest. I performed an existential-phenomenological analysis of five participants’ in-depth accounts of their involvements participating in collective protest. I considered my interviewees’ discourse to be reflective of their lived, embodied experiences of being in protest with others. Participants each described distinct protesting experiences. I explored their accounts in relation to six basic aspects of existence: self, other, embodiment, time, space, and choice/freedom. From within these existential realms, participants’ accounts revealed five key existential themes of participating in collective protest: (1) Existential Crises and Activation; (2) Existential Magnification; (3) Existential Horizons; (4) …

“From Behind The Plow”: Agrarianism And Racial Uplift In African American Literature, 1881-1917, James O'Donoghue
Dissertations
My study challenges our current valorization of movement and flow in readings of African American literature. I do so through an exploration of the representations of the black agrarian masses who either choose to remain or could not afford the spectacular forms of escape to urban life which many essentialized as freedom. In the dramatic and pivotal decades following emancipation, African American leaders attempted to check the growing apartheid by the “combination” of diverse African American communities: North and South, professional and working class. This required that they move beyond the question of whether one was free or slave to …
Adapting To Obstacles: Inhibition And Creative Potential In A Sample Of Successfully Aging Older Adults, Cassandra Dinius
Adapting To Obstacles: Inhibition And Creative Potential In A Sample Of Successfully Aging Older Adults, Cassandra Dinius
Dissertations
Studying older adults who are aging ‘successfully’ (i.e., avoiding disease/disability; maintaining high cognitive and physical functioning; engaging in meaningful interpersonal/social engagement) may offer insight into variables that contribute to cognitive change throughout the lifespan. Successful aging is related to levels of engagement, which may be promoted by the problem solving and reevaluation encouraged by the creative process (Fisher & Specht, 1999). Creative thinking requires the consideration of diverse concepts and strategies (e.g., generating many solutions), as well as the regulated filtering of these possibilities (e.g., neither too permissive nor too narrow when eliminating ideas; Baas, De Dreu, & Nijstad, 2011). …

Getting “Woke” On Intersectionality: Illuminating The Rhetorical Significance Of Disability Discourse In Feminist Activist Spaces, Danielle C. Biss
Getting “Woke” On Intersectionality: Illuminating The Rhetorical Significance Of Disability Discourse In Feminist Activist Spaces, Danielle C. Biss
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
In the 28 years since the establishment of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), individuals with disabilities still live on the margins in social, public, and mediated discourse. Women of color with disabilities, in particular, still struggle to challenge their positionality on the margins due to multifaceted layers of oppression, ranging from sexism, racism, classism, and ableism as further complexities of identity. Yet, in a society with such disregard for and contestation involving disability issues, there is hope with disability activist Vilissa Thompson. In this rhetorical analysis, I examine Thompson as a marginal rhetor whose disability activism serves as a …

Adolescents’ Perception Of The Threat Of Sexual Harassment: The Development Of An Index, Hussein Soliman, Jennifer Koran, Amal Abdelmonem,
Publications
In Egypt female adolescents are on a daily base victims of various forms of sexual harassment as young females re unable to justify their feelings, thoughts and behaviors toward such violent and hostile activities. Therefore, this study develops an adolescents’ sexual harassment index (ASHI), which measures female adolescents’ perception of the threat of sexual harassment based on cultural, environmental and societal aspects. A total of 874 adolescents age 17–18 in Egypt participated in a survey consisting of 65 items of 7 variables: threat of SH, exposure, society awareness, child’s characteristics, social engagement, religiosity and the effect of the media. Using …
Examination Of Psychiatric Health Disparities & Selected Laws, Rahn Kennedy Bailey
Examination Of Psychiatric Health Disparities & Selected Laws, Rahn Kennedy Bailey
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Providing adequate healthcare to individuals in the United States is an ambitious goal. Healthcare is at the confluence of medicine, politics, economics, philosophy, ethics, and the law. Many poignant questions are brought forth when examining this multifaceted issue: Does every individual deserve access to adequate healthcare? How does one quantify, establish, attribute, and enforce a uniform cost to healthcare? Is optimal healthcare only to be enjoyed by those with abundant resources? Some, including Martin Luther King, have contended that healthcare is a human right. Academics and politicians have spent many years attempting to conjure up answers to these fundamental questions. …

Understanding The Nature Of Eco-Leadership: A Mixed Methods Study Of Leadership In Community Organizations, Eric K. Kaufman, Rachael E. Kennedy, D. Adam Cletzer
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
The purpose of this study was to explore and explain eco-leadership in practice, specifically among community groups in Virginia's New River Valley. This paper describes relationships between community groups' leadership style and other factors while also highlighting an intricate mixed method design that ultimately led to a deep, rich understanding of these relationships. There were five research objectives: (1) Characterize the community groups' leadership culture; (2) Assess each group's cohesiveness; (3) Assess the groups' community project involvement; (4) Determine if relationships exist between the variables; and (5) Highlight the role of mixed methods in the emergence of findings. The study …

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
This paper presents the case of a voluntary watershed project that addressed the need for improving water quality by reducing agricultural nutrient loss. The Beargrass Creek Watershed Approach Project in Wabash County, Indiana aimed to demonstrate that it is possible to achieve ambitious water quality goals and maximize the effectiveness of conservation funding through locally-led efforts that bring together multiple stakeholders throughout the process. The project focused on implementing the "right practices" in the "right places" through a goal-oriented, science-based, and locally-adapted approach to voluntary conservation. We examine and evaluate all three phases of the project and discuss successes and …
Gender And The Enactment Of Suicide Bombings By Boko Haram, Jordan N. Galehan
Gender And The Enactment Of Suicide Bombings By Boko Haram, Jordan N. Galehan
Dissertations
The Boko Haram terror group has utilized more women as suicide bombers than any other group in history. While prior research has examined why this phenomenon is occurring, and what makes Boko Haram a unique terror group, the present study examines how these attacks are being perpetrated, or enacted, by the female bombers. Utilizing the Global Terrorism Database (GTD), which is the largest terrorism incident database available, the study examined the incidents of female suicide bombings perpetrated by Boko Haram. The open-sourced citations provided by the GTD were compiled and turned into a complementary qualitative dataset. Overall, there were 151 …
The Politics Of Christian Religious Movements In The United States, David Keith Searcy
The Politics Of Christian Religious Movements In The United States, David Keith Searcy
Dissertations
This dissertation is an exploration of the religious movements within Christianity in the United States. After discussing the common strategies used in the social science literature to classify religious belonging, I develop an alternative method that leverages associational ties between religious groups and people who are not active despite their identity. I develop theory-driven classifications for people whose religious identity cannot be determined solely on their identification. The remainder of the dissertation tests whether religious movements correspond to differences in the social and political behavior of those in these religious categories. I find significant differences on demographics, religious beliefs and …
Iwrm And The Nexus Approach: Versatile Concepts For Water Resources Education, Neil S. Grigg
Iwrm And The Nexus Approach: Versatile Concepts For Water Resources Education, Neil S. Grigg
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and the nexus approach are tools to identify solutions for water problems across interdependent sectors with interacting social and natural systems. Although both tools aim at solutions for complex water issues using an interdisciplinary approach, IWRM is a management process and the nexus approach is a systems tool to characterize problems. By clarifying their attributes and providing examples, instructors can use them to explain broad social problems and offer practical frameworks for problem-solving. Given their breadth, IWRM and the nexus approach can seem vague and attract criticism, but if they are replaced, the need for …
