Economics Of The Firm: Identifying Factors Affecting The Performance Of Agribusiness Corporations, Casey Engel
Economics Of The Firm: Identifying Factors Affecting The Performance Of Agribusiness Corporations, Casey Engel
Research Papers
This paper is about identifying the factors that affect firm performance. Many economists have attempted to explain how to define an economy based off of many different aspects, but the focus of this paper is to find out what factors affect the performance of a company. This paper discusses different economic theories, and research which is related to the topic. Then I show a few factors that I found in my research regarding how a firm performs, and finish by interpreting and discussing those factors.
The Effects Of Thc On Attentional Bias To Emotional Stimuli, Sydney N. Haberberger
The Effects Of Thc On Attentional Bias To Emotional Stimuli, Sydney N. Haberberger
Honors Theses
The current study tested the hypothesis that the effects of THC on affect are mediated by the ability of THC to alter attentional bias to positive and negative stimuli. The study was completed by 16 participants, all of whom were consistent marijuana users. During sessions, participants used a machine called a Quantified Smoke Delivery System, which delivers a controlled amount of smoke to the user, to smoke either a cigarette that contained THC or a placebo cigarette. After smoking, participants would complete a task. During tasks, participants were placed in an eye tracking apparatus in order to record the movement …
Disruptive Ambiguities: The Potentiality Of Jotería Critique In Communication Studies, Robert M. Gutierrez-Perez
Disruptive Ambiguities: The Potentiality Of Jotería Critique In Communication Studies, Robert M. Gutierrez-Perez
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
Utilizing performative writing to interrogate the experiences of a queer Xicano male in the discipline of Communication Studies, this essay argues for specificity in dialogue with specificity to disrupt dominant and/or normalized power relations in Queer of Color Critique (QOCC) and beyond. After defining QOCC, the potentiality of jotería critique is offered as a decolonial queer praxis that focuses on hybridity, radical interconnectedness, and nonheteronormative mestiza/o sexual and gender subjectivities. Further, by embracing the ambiguities of hybridity and the politics of radical interconnectedness, Jotería communication studies is a nascent sub-discipline that works in the borderlands between …
“I Am More Than That”: Exploring Betweenness Through Experiential Activity, Samantha Brown Fentress, Arielle Semmel
“I Am More Than That”: Exploring Betweenness Through Experiential Activity, Samantha Brown Fentress, Arielle Semmel
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
In this paper we present a pedagogical tool that can be used in and out of classroom settings to explore Diversi and Moreira's (2009) notion of betweenness, or liminal spaces within and among identities. Intricate Identities is an activity that invites discussion of the dynamics of identity and betweenness. In our paper, we share what we have learned through facilitating three variations of Intricate Identities with several introductory level classes. After providing a detailed description of each variation, we consider the students’ reactions to the identity activity. This consideration includes accounting for our own identities– facilitators rather than participants, instructors …

Training Deictic Relations To Children With Developmental Delays Through The Use Of The Peak Relational Training System, Dena Larae Kime
Training Deictic Relations To Children With Developmental Delays Through The Use Of The Peak Relational Training System, Dena Larae Kime
Theses
Children with developmental delays often do not acquire perspective taking skills without training. These skills are imperative to the ability to relate to others socially and the development of appropriate social behavior. They may lack the ability to recognize that another person’s view may differ from their own, or that reality may differ from appearance. This study used deictic relational training to aid in the development of a ‘Theory of Mind’ and the acquisition of perspective taking skills. The PEAK relational training system was used in a special education classroom to train YOU and I relations, as well as YOU …
Relational Training Of Contextual Cues And Self-Rule Formation In Simulated Slot Machines, Rocco Giovanni Catrone
Relational Training Of Contextual Cues And Self-Rule Formation In Simulated Slot Machines, Rocco Giovanni Catrone
Theses
Between 1% and 1.4% of people who engage in gambling behaviors lead to disordered or pathological gambling (Whiting & Dixon, 2015), while 44% of all money spent on legal gambling is done so with slot machines (Choliz, 2010). Various behavioral concepts have been theorized as a possible source of gambling addition; losses disguised as wins (LDWs), near-miss, gamblers’ fallacy, illusions of control, and verbally constructed self-rules related to these topics. The current study sought to extend the previous research on condition discrimination in altering slot machine preference while also analyzing the effects of vocalized self-rules during slot machine selection. Conclusions …

Expanding The Dialogue: The Need For Fat Studies In Critical Intercultural Communication, Hannah R. Long
Expanding The Dialogue: The Need For Fat Studies In Critical Intercultural Communication, Hannah R. Long
Research Papers
In this paper, I argue that critical intercultural communication, as a discipline, can benefit from an inclusion of fat studies within its literature and analysis. Reciprocally, fat studies can also benefit from this relationship and the questions that would be raised for both fat studies and critical intercultural communication by such a juxtaposition of the areas of study. In particular, I employ my experiences as a fat, U.S. American woman to situate my own embodied knowledge as a way of understanding, in concert with literature reviews of fat studies and identity research within critical intercultural communication. I also utilize muted …
Fatigue Modeling Via Mammalian Auditory System For Prediction Of Noise Induced Hearing Loss, Pengfei Sun, Jun Qin, Kathleen Campbell
Fatigue Modeling Via Mammalian Auditory System For Prediction Of Noise Induced Hearing Loss, Pengfei Sun, Jun Qin, Kathleen Campbell
Articles
Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) remains as a severe health problem worldwide. Existing noise metrics and modeling for evaluation of NIHL are limited on prediction of gradually developing NIHL (GDHL) caused by high-level occupational noise. In this study, we proposed two auditory fatigue based models, including equal velocity level (EVL) and complex velocity level (CVL), which combine the high-cycle fatigue theory with the mammalian auditory model, to predict GDHL. The mammalian auditory model is introduced by combining the transfer function of the external-middle ear and the triple-path nonlinear (TRNL) filter to obtain velocities of basilar membrane (BM) in cochlea. The …
Art Therapy In Educational Settings: A Confluence Of Practices, Nicole M. Gnezda Ph.D.
Art Therapy In Educational Settings: A Confluence Of Practices, Nicole M. Gnezda Ph.D.
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
Art educators solicit a range of images from students. Art therapists help clients respond to the images they create in ways that promote self-understanding and personal growth. This article describes two settings where art therapy perspectives have been integrated with art education practices in order to help students identify underlying issues impacting their education and well-being. As a result of information that arises in art therapy oriented art education programs, students can be offered guidance and directed to interventions that help them grow past their pain and self-defeating behaviors.
Other-Than-Ego Consciousness: Approaching The “Spiritual” In Secular Art Education, Nico Roenpagel
Other-Than-Ego Consciousness: Approaching The “Spiritual” In Secular Art Education, Nico Roenpagel
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
Alternative worldviews bring forth alternative visions of education. This article sheds light on one contemporary approach to a spiritual worldview and its implications for secular art education. It proposes that high school visual art is a particularly conducive environment to engaging teenagers with existential and spiritual questions. An approach to spirituality grounded in a worldview of “profound interconnectedness” and “other-than-ego consciousness,” rather than religious systems, offers a timely basis for renegotiating the spiritual in secular art education settings. Through five concepts, the article bridges broader discussions on spirituality with concrete learning and teaching in the art classroom. For example, it …
Efficacy Of Parental Use Of A Tagging Procedure To Enhance Their Child's Sports Performance Training, Lisa R. Hunsperger
Efficacy Of Parental Use Of A Tagging Procedure To Enhance Their Child's Sports Performance Training, Lisa R. Hunsperger
Research Papers
Youth sports have become increasingly popular and competitive, resulting in parents seeking out coaching and training facilities that can improve their children’s sports performance. Tagging offers a promising way to enhance sports training by incorporating immediate audible feedback successfully used in the field of Behavior Analysis that was once reserved only for professional athletes. However, it is unclear whether parents can effectively use a tagging procedure when provided with a breakdown of the specific steps to skills needed (e.g. task analysis) to enhance their child’s training received at a paid training facility. The purpose of this study was to test …

Structured Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this research study was to describe university supervisors’ perception of extending the student teaching time frame in a family and consumer sciences (FCS) teacher education program. Background: Recently, a Midwestern State University FCS teacher education program extended the length of student teaching from 10 to 16 weeks. To verify if the student teaching timeframe mattered in enhancing the development of FCS teacher candidates, this study sought the perspectives of university supervisors who worked in both timeframes. Method: Using a qualitative design, interviews were conducted with two FCS university supervisors who supervised student teachers in …
Explaining The Varying Success Of Radical Right Parties In European Union And National Elections, Jakub Wondreys
Explaining The Varying Success Of Radical Right Parties In European Union And National Elections, Jakub Wondreys
Research Papers
In this study, I try to explain-as other scholars have-the growing success of radical right parties in Europe. I also address conceptualization and classification issues. Contrary to other scholars, I compare party performance across two different elections: European and National. Also unlike the vast majority of studies that focus exclusively on Western Europe, this study looks more broadly at all members of the European Union, including those in Central Eastern Europe. My main argument is that radical right will perform better in European than in national elections. In explaining why parties should perform better in the former rather than the …
After Oslo, A Paradigm Shift? Redefining Sovereignty, Responsibility And Self-Determination In Israel‐Palestine, Virginia Q. Tilley
After Oslo, A Paradigm Shift? Redefining Sovereignty, Responsibility And Self-Determination In Israel‐Palestine, Virginia Q. Tilley
Publications
Since the Oslo Accords were signed in the mid-1990s, conflict resolution regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict has been guided by two conjoined premises regarding: (1) the identity and right to self-determination of the two ‘peoples’ involved, Jewish and Palestinian-Arab; and (2) Israel’s sovereignty, or lack of it, in different portions of Mandate Palestine. Although these twin premises are now treated as givens, in tandem they have paradoxically proved ruinous to the well-being of civilians living under occupation by fostering futile notions that peace can be achieved through geographic partition to serve these two rival ethno-national state projects. This approach is fundamentally …
Csr Initiatives Among College Athletic Programs: A Content Analysis Of Community Service Endeavors, Rammi Hazzaa
Csr Initiatives Among College Athletic Programs: A Content Analysis Of Community Service Endeavors, Rammi Hazzaa
Research Papers
This study investigated the prevalence of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in college athletic program websites. CSR refers to actions that appear to further some social good (McWilliams & Siegel, 2001). Sport entities have widely embraced the principles and practices of CSR over the past decade (Babiak & Wolfe, 2009; Bradish & Cronin, 2009). This particular study builds upon the existing literature by examining CSR practices in NCAA Division I athletic departments. A content analysis was used to collect data and test the research questions. The results suggested that community service activities only appeared on one-third of the 128 FBS …

The recently developed competencies in pediatric psychology from the Society of Pediatric Psychology (SPP) Task Force on Competencies and Best Training Practices in Pediatric Psychology provide a benchmark to evaluate training program practices and student progress toward training in level-specific competency goals. Graduate-level training presents a unique challenge for addressing the breadth of competencies required in pediatric psychology while maintaining development of broader clinical psychology training goals. We describe a recurring graduate-level pediatric psychology seminar course that addresses training in a number of the competency cluster areas. The structure of the seminar, examples of classroom topics that correspond with competency …
Water Diplomacy: A Negotiated Approach To Manage Complex Water Problems, Shafiqul Islam, Amanda C. Repella
Water Diplomacy: A Negotiated Approach To Manage Complex Water Problems, Shafiqul Islam, Amanda C. Repella
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Many water management decisions have evolved from addressing simple problems, such as accessing water near its source, to complex problems of managing and allocating water in the face of multiple and competing demands in the natural, societal and political domains. The Water Diplomacy Framework (WDF) is emerging as an alternative to traditional techno- or values-focused approaches to water management. The WDF is an approach that diagnoses water problems, identifies intervention points, and proposes sustainable resolutions that incorporate diverse viewpoints and uncertainty as well as changing and competing demands. As such, WDF rests upon diverse forms of contextual inquiry of and …

There is something in our genome that dictates life expectancy and there is nothing that can be done to avoid this; indeed, there is not yet any record of a person who has cheated death. Our physical prowess can vacillate substantially in our lifetime according to our activity levels and nutritional status and we may fight aging, but we will inevitably lose. We have presented strong evidence that the atrophy which accompanies aging is to some extent caused by loss of innervation. We compared muscle biopsies of sedentary seniors to those of life long active seniors, and show that these …

The Role Of Social Science In Successfully Implementing Watershed Management Strategies, Kristin Floress, Kofi Akamani, Kathleen E. Halvorsen, Andrew T. Kozich, Mae Davenport
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Successful watershed management and changes in water quality conditions are dependent upon changes in human behaviors. Those tasked with managing watersheds and other natural resources often assume that people are not acting to protect or restore their resources because they lack the necessary knowledge and understanding. However, individual behaviors are impacted by a variety of social, psychological, institutional, and economic factors that need to be understood for successful implementation of watershed management strategies. This paper provides an introduction to the field of human dimensions of watershed management, an overview of social science concepts that have been found to explain water-related …
Exploring Veterans' Experiences In Engl-101 At Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, John Edward Gund
Exploring Veterans' Experiences In Engl-101 At Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, John Edward Gund
Theses
In recent years, an increasing number of military veterans have enrolled in higher education. Little research has been conducted on veterans in tandem with higher education, but what does exist shows that they are a unique student population because of their military background. In the last few years, scholarship has called for research on veterans in classroom environments. Moreover, composition scholars in particular have called for research on veterans and writing. Although veterans have been recognized as a unique student population, little research has been conducted on what pedagogical practices can be used to help them as they become students. …

Nuestro Mundo A Martiano Exploration Of The Existential Impact Of Climate Change, Alejandro Chester Strong
Dissertations
This work is an account of meaning and value in the time of climate change. I use the findings and predictions of scientists to develop a philosophy of living that fits today's concerns. In essence the ideas put forward come from a single question: If humans can change the planet in such a way that it threatens the possibility of human life on Earth what does this mean for the place of humans on Earth? It is this question, which the every chapter hereafter works to answer. Establishing a philosophy of living and explaining a global ecological crisis is a …

Peer Victimization And Drd4 Genotype Influence Problem Behaviors In Young Children, Lisabeth Fisher Dilalla, Kyle Bersted, Sufna Gheyara John
Articles
Decades of research supports the presence of significant genetic influences on children’s internalizing (emotional), externalizing (acting out), and social difficulties, including victimization. Additionally, being victimized has been shown to relate to further behavioral problems. The current study assessed the nature of the gene-environment relationships between the DRD4 gene, peer victimization, and externalizing and internalizing difficulties in 6- to 10-year- old children. 174 children (56% girls; 88.6% Caucasian, 3.4% African American, 8% mixed race or Mayan) and their parents were administered victimization and problem behavior questionnaires, and DRD4 was genotyped for the children. An interaction between genes (DRD4) and environment (victimization) …
