The New Black Face: The Transition Of Black One-Dimensional Characters From Film To Video Games, Kyle A. Harris
The New Black Face: The Transition Of Black One-Dimensional Characters From Film To Video Games, Kyle A. Harris
Research Papers
This paper is about the stereotypical portrayal of black character's in film and how these portrayals transitioned to video games. Video games are a growing medium that continue to evolve as technology advances. As video games have advanced, the characters have become more intricate than the two-dimensional character sprites featured on the earlier Nintendo NES and Atari consoles. Naturally, characters in video games are derived or inspired by actual people and as such display characteristics of different races/ethnic groups. In this paper, I will explore how stereotypical black characters have influenced the way in which characters are developed in video …

Plenty Of Fish: Irony Of Animation, Brett J. Moron
Research Papers
Along with the trends in media, animation is rapidly changing. With these changes it becomes harder to identify what is truly a unique or original idea in this media art form. Parody, a common component found in animation can be the very foundation in regards to the creation of a cartoon or an animated art. But is it the animator’s or creator’s key goal to make a parody or are they trying to create a unique story that deviates from a traditional tale? Are the passions behind them to be comical, creative, or both? To find out, I decided to …

Accelerating Expertise With Part-Task Training Of Macrocognitive Skills In The Baseball Workplace, Peter J. Fadde
Accelerating Expertise With Part-Task Training Of Macrocognitive Skills In The Baseball Workplace, Peter J. Fadde
Articles
Accelerating expert performance has frustrated many researchers and trainers in human factors, naturalistic decision-making, sport science, and expertise studies – with insufficient application of expert performance theories, findings and methods to the training macrocognitive aspects of human performance. Video-occlusion methods perfected by sports expertise researchers can have great utility, in some cases offering an effective and inexpensive alternative to high-fidelity simulation. The problem seems to be that expertise research done in laboratory and field settings doesn’t get adequately translated into workplace training. So, this article presents a framework for better linkage of expertise research/training across laboratory, field, and workplace settings. …

Racism Creates Barriers To Effective Community Policing, Robette Ann Dias
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Robette Ann Dias has been the executive co-director of Crossroads Antiracism Organizing & Training since 2002. Crossroads is a national organization that works in institutions and communities to create antiracist policy, practice and culture. In this article Ms. Dias briefly reflects on four barriers to building trust and legitimacy in community policing that are created by racism: US society is built on a foundation of racism, every system including the legal system and law enforcement were originally designed to perpetuate white supremacy; denial of racism as a continued problem and policing as part of the problem, the prevalence of violence …
Officer Wellness: A Focus On Mental Health, Stephen M. Soltys
Officer Wellness: A Focus On Mental Health, Stephen M. Soltys
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Police officers have a significantly shorter life expectancy than the general population. Vehicle accidents, suicide, and homicide, along with poor nutrition, lack of exercise, and sleep deprivation contribute to reduced life expectancy among police officers. The failure to recognize and treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is associated with an increased risk of suicide in association with concurrent depression. Police officers have an elevated risk of PTSD because many police officers are exposed to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence, both as risks to themselves and as threats to the community members they serve. Identifying PTSD and providing …
Assessing And Responding To Substance Misuse In Law Enforcement, Ted R. Miller, Deborah M. Galvin
Assessing And Responding To Substance Misuse In Law Enforcement, Ted R. Miller, Deborah M. Galvin
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Law enforcement personnel face the challenge of misuse of alcohol, illegal drugs, and prescription drugs. Police officers may themselves misuse substances, and they may be aware of misuse among their family members or colleagues. This paper assesses the extent of substance misuse among law enforcement personnel and provides lessons about how to structure effective prevention programs. Lessons are drawn from programs supported by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) cooperative agreements. Successful implementation of prevention programs requires support from top management; an understanding of workplace culture; awareness of substance use attitudes and patterns of employees, management, and union …

Using Social Indicators To Evaluate The Effectiveness Of Outreach In Two Indiana Watersheds, Rebecca Busse, Jessica D. Ulrich-Schad, Lyn Crighton, Sara Peel, Ken Genskow, Linda Stalker Prokopy
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Nonpoint source pollution is recognized as one of the greatest threats to water quality in the United States. Outreach is one tool that can be used to help increase public awareness and motivate action towards addressing water issues. In order to create effective outreach, we must understand public perceptions of water quality, perceived barriers to implementing environmental solutions, and what types of outreach best connect with target audiences. In 2010, social indicator surveys were distributed in two watersheds in Indiana to gather baseline data on urban and agricultural residents' attitudes towards and usage of water quality conservation practices. Local watershed …

Developing Great Lakes Literacy And Stewardship Through A Nonformal Science Education Camp, Shari L. Dann, Brandon Schroeder
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Informal science education has received great attention nationally in recent years, however little has been included in the research or policy literature regarding camps as contexts for informal learning. This article first describes how a Great Lakes water resource education camp is based upon professional definitions of informal, nonformal and formal education. Next, we describe specific details of our long-running Michigan 4-H Great Lakes and Natural Resources Camp designed to foster teen leadership and watershed stewardship. The Camp utilizes research-based best practices in nonformal science education, Place Based Education, Great Lakes Literacy education, and environmental education, as we demonstrate through …

Developing Capacity For Local Watershed Management: Essential Leadership Skills And Training Approaches, Lois Wolfson, Ann Lewandowski, Joe Bonnell, Jane Frankenberger, Faye Sleeper, Jo Latimore
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Management of water resources at a watershed scale often occurs at the local level and relies on the effectiveness of local staff and leaders. Four land-grant universities in Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio are delivering training programs that build the capacity of local water resource professionals. Based on experience from these programs, a survey on watershed management core competencies, and two surveys of information and training needs for watershed groups, we examined what core proficiencies are needed by watershed group leaders, how existing programs have approached professional training, and effective methods for delivering the training. Results indicated that successful watershed …

Pretend Play And Creativity In Preschool-Aged Children: Associations And Brief Intervention, Karla K. Fehr, Sandra W. Russ
Pretend Play And Creativity In Preschool-Aged Children: Associations And Brief Intervention, Karla K. Fehr, Sandra W. Russ
Publications
Cognitive and affective processes in play have related to measures of creativity in school-aged children. In a previous examination of these play processes in preschool-aged children with the Affect in Play Scale-Preschool version, cognitive and affective play processes related to divergent thinking. One goal of the current study was to replicate this finding and examine the relationship between pretend play and storytelling creativity in preschoolers. A second goal was to test the effectiveness of a brief play intervention. Adult-led play interventions have effectively improved play skills and related developmental skills for children with documented play deficits. However, there is a …

Prior research has shown that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and epilepsy are frequently comorbid and that both disorders are associated with various attention and memory problems. Nonetheless, limited research has been conducted comparing the two disorders in one sample to determine unique versus shared deficits. Hence, we investigated differences in working memory (WM) and short-term and delayed recall between children with ADHD, focal epilepsy of mixed foci, comorbid ADHD/epilepsy and controls. Participants were compared on the Core subtests and the Picture Locations subtest of the Children's Memory Scale (CMS). Results indicated that children with ADHD displayed intact verbal WM and long-term …

Treatment Of Sleep Problems In Young Children: A Case Series Report Of A Cognitive-Behavioral Play Intervention, Karla K. Fehr, Sandra W. Russ, Carolyn E. Ievers-Landis
Publications
Sleep problems and bedtime resistance are common in young children. Treatment is critical because sleep problems typically persist, and insufficient sleep is related to worse outcomes. Current behavioral treatments do not work directly with the child to reduce anxiety and distress at bedtime. Cognitive-behavioral play therapy is a treatment approach designed to teach coping skills to young children by combining cognitive-behavioral therapy with pretend play, a developmentally-appropriate intervention mode. The current case series examined the effectiveness of adding a brief cognitive-behavioral play intervention (CBPI) to parent behavior management for young children with sleep difficulties. Four children (4-6 years) received three …

Uniform-Based And Triangular-Based Third-Order Power Method Distributions Using A Doubling Technique Distributions, Mohan D. Pant, Todd C. Headrick
Conference Proceedings
Power method (PM) polynomials have been used for simulating non-normal distributions in a variety of settings such as toxicology research, price risk, business-cycle features, microarray analysis, computer adaptive testing, and structural equation modeling. A majority of the applications associated with the PM polynomials are based on the method of matching conventional moments (e.g., skew and kurtosis). However, estimators of skew and kurtosis can be (a) substantially biased, (b) highly dispersed, or (c) influenced by outliers. To address this limitation, two families of third-order PM distributions are developed through the method of 𝐿𝐿-moments (Hosking, 1990) using a doubling technique (Morgenthaler & …

Deans Of Women In U.S. Higher Education, Kaitlin Schmitt
Research Papers
This paper traces the role of deans of women in institutions of higher education in the United States, spanning from the 1800s until the position’s decline in the 1960s. Deans of women played a pivotal role in advocating for college women, helping them receive access to housing, student organizations, and academic programs originally open only to their male peers. As the position because a staple on campuses across the country, deans of women created organizations, conferences, and journals with the hope of sharing their experiences with other deans, and setting professional standards. After World War II, the role of deans …
