Quality Improvement Project Stress First Aid: Equipping Nurse Leaders, Bethany Russell Sep 2026

Quality Improvement Project Stress First Aid: Equipping Nurse Leaders, Bethany Russell

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Stress among nurses can negatively affect well-being, workforce stability, and the quality of patient care, highlighting the need for nurse leaders to effectively recognize and respond to stress within their teams. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate whether education on the 7 Cs of Stress First Aid (SFA) improved leadership self-efficacy among nurse leaders at an urban acute-care hospital. Watson’s Theory of Human Caring provided the theoretical foundation, while Lewin’s Change Theory guided implementation of the practice change. A one-group pretest-posttest design was used, with the Plan-Do-Study-Act framework supporting project implementation. Participating nurse leaders completed an …

Participant Recruitment And Retention In Studies Investigating Pregnancy-Related Pelvic Girdle Pain: A Methodological Systematic Review, Jasmine Darley, Bradley Halliday, Jill Shawe, Joanne Hosking, Zoe Hoare, Jennifer Freeman

School of Nursing and Midwifery

BackgroundRecruiting and retaining participants for clinical trials is a common and well-documented challenge, with particular complexity in perinatal populations which are historically underrepresented in health research. Recruitment and retention are known to be shaped by context-specific factors, yet no systematic review has examined these processes within the clinical domain of pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain (PPGP), a common and potentially debilitating condition affecting around one in five women in the UK.ObjectiveThis methodological systematic review aimed to summarise participant recruitment and retention in clinical trials investigating PPGP across four objectives: (1) to identify methods of recruitment and retention; (2) to assess the …

Average Performance And Performance Variability On A Brief Functional Fine Motor Test Reflect Distinct Behavioral Constructs In Aging, Chung-Fu Sun, Kyle B. Tomlin, Jennapher Lingo Vangilder, Andrew Hooyman, Alexandra M. Reed, Jessica L. Trevino, Sydney Y. Schaefer

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Prior work in older adults has developed a brief functional fine motor test, which involves repeated timed trials of an upper-limb task. Performance has been associated with global and domain-specific neuropsychological tests as well as putative markers of Alzheimer’s disease when scored using variability in trial time; however, the extent to which task performance depends on motor ability has not been established nor quantified. This retrospective study examined whether mean trial time and trial time variability (measured as intrasubject standard deviation in trial time) were differentially associated with standard assessments of motor and cognitive function. Forty-eight older adults with no …

Development And Validation Of The Art Engagement Reflection Scale, Rebekah M. Rodriguez-Boerwinkle, Zorana Ivcevic, Pablo P.L. Tinio

Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works

Aesthetic encounters often feel immediate, yet contemporary theories emphasize that engagement with art unfolds over time through a sequence of perceptual and cognitive processes. Despite the importance of this temporal structure to models of aesthetic experience, there are no psychometric tools designed to capture engagement as a process rather than as a disposition or an outcome. We introduce the Art Engagement Reflection Scale (AERS), a brief, mixed-methods, artwork-specific measure grounded in the mirror model of art. We present two studies that examined the psychometric properties of the AERS across controlled and naturalistic online contexts. In Study 1, participants responded to …

Evolution Of Economic Geography’S Focus On Resource Studies: Historical Trajectory, Research Progress, And Emerging Trends, Yanxiang Fan, Canfei He

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Amid the intertwined contexts of global climate change, the reshaping of the geopolitical landscape, and China’s economic transformation, complex issues in the resource sector have increasingly come to the fore, highlighting the urgent need for systematic research from the perspective of economic geography. This study constructs an interactive analysis framework of core–extended dimensions to systematically review the developments and trends in resource research from an economic geography perspective. This study establishes a two-layer theoretical analysis framework of core and extended dimensions. The core dimension includes four aspects: resource elements in regional economic development, resource flows in global trade networks, resource …

Impact And Mechanisms Of Social Economic Status On Accessibility Of Public Services, Youlang Zhang, Yefei Yu, Xufeng Zhu Sep 2026

Impact And Mechanisms Of Social Economic Status On Accessibility Of Public Services, Youlang Zhang, Yefei Yu, Xufeng Zhu

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

Balanced and equitable access to public services is a core element of high-quality development and is frequently emphasized in policy documents. Nevertheless, existing literature lacks attention to the conceptual elaboration and micro-level mechanisms of the accessibility of individual public services. Social economic status serves as a comprehensive and widely meaningful indicator of differences among individuals. This study argues that accessibility reflects the degree of adaptation between supply and demand in public services based on government-citizen interactions. The study proposes a unified analytical framework including public resources and capabilities on the demand side and administrative procedures on the supply side, aiming …

Opening Day! A Networking Activity For The First Day Of Class, Kerri Anne Crowne

International Journal of Transformative Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Diversity has increased in our classrooms, and students, on average, spend over seven hours on screens daily. These factors create more complexity in higher education. Networking provides opportunities to engage students with others and build social capital in diverse environments. So, during the first day of the semester, I conduct a networking icebreaker that provides students the chance to get to know their classmates better. During the activity, students use a handout with a table of criteria to find someone in the class who fits each criterion listed. Then they write the person’s name in the table and ask them …

Class(Room) Culture: New Conceptualization And A Model Of Culture-Aware Teaching, Ravit Heskiau

International Journal of Transformative Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

As higher education becomes increasingly personalized and students’ individual identities are increasingly considered, this article explores the concept of classroom culture as part of assessing, embracing, and shaping each class’s shared characteristics as a collective. I define classroom culture and explain why it is paramount for educators to understand the unique cultures of their classes and actively assess them, striking a balance between supporting classroom culture and shaping it. Following a critical literature review, I demonstrate the application of commonly used cultural frameworks from the organizational culture literature to higher education classes. Specifically, I expand on how they can help …

Pre-Nursing Students' Reflections Of The Most Useful Success Strategies: A Qualitative Study, Regina W. Urban, Leslie A. Jennings Sep 2026

Pre-Nursing Students' Reflections Of The Most Useful Success Strategies: A Qualitative Study, Regina W. Urban, Leslie A. Jennings

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: Initiatives to address the US nursing shortage include increasing enrollment, standardizing education, and supporting student success (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2024; Spector et al., 2022). Despite reports of poor study habits and difficulty adapting to science courses, few studies examine study and time management strategies in pre-nursing students (Felicilda-Reynaldo et al., 2017). Mindfulness-based programs improve mental health outcomes in nursing students (Aloufi et al., 2021); yet research on mindfulness programs with pre-nursing students is lacking. Identifying success strategies pre-nursing students find useful is key to improving academic retention (Shelton, 2012). Therefore, this study aimed to qualitatively explore …

Supporting Multilingual Learners Through Culturally Responsive Practices, Betsy Twedell Sep 2026

Supporting Multilingual Learners Through Culturally Responsive Practices, Betsy Twedell

Graduate Teacher Education

This literature review examined how educational leaders can implement culturally responsive practices to support multilingual learners, improve academic achievement, encourage a sense of belonging, and advance equitable educational outcomes. A total of sixteen qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods studies were reviewed, along with two conceptual studies that provided additional guidance. Three recurring themes emerged: culturally and linguistically responsive practices, professional development, and Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS). The research suggested that multilingual learners were best supported when educators viewed students’ languages, cultures, identities, and lived experiences as academic assets and integrated these resources into instruction. Findings also showed that professional development …

Statistical Triangulation: Weighing Multiple Statistical Tools In Macro-Level Housing Research, Julio Montanez, Amy Donley, Jacquelyn Reiss

Journal of Applied Disciplines

Homelessness and housing research has a detection problem, in which understanding housing issues (e.g., substandard housing) is plagued by problems like undercounting and incomplete data. To partially compensate for these pitfalls, the current research engages in an exercise aiming to sharpen the statistical approach to homelessness and housing research. The macro-level sample included Florida’s 27 Continuums of Care geographies (composed of one or more Florida counties). The dependent variables were sheltered homelessness, energy-based substandard housing, and plumbing-based substandard housing. The independent variables were misdemeanor partner violence rates, felony partner violence rates, high school non-completion rates, urbanicity, and population burdens of …

Historical Redlining, Walkability, And Green Gentrification In Baltimore, Usa, Rafael B. De Andrade, Ella Baynes, Vanessa Belt, Joseph Colasacco, Camden Speilman

The Geographical Bulletin

Historical redlining created persistent patterns of racial segregation and spatial inequality in American cities. However, urban initiatives aimed at increasing green spaces in these neighborhoods increasingly trigger gentrification that can displace original residents. In this study, we examine the spatial intersection of 1930s-era Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC) redlining boundaries, current property values, and multimodal park accessibility in Baltimore, Maryland. Using geographic data from 245 properties and 13 major parks, we developed an accessibility framework incorporating walking, public transit, and automobile travel modes to estimate accessibility to green spaces across neighborhoods with different redlining histories. Our spatial analysis reveals that …

Public Sector Experiences Of Disruptions In The Psychological Contract: The Influence Of Ideological Currency And Digital Transformation On Public Servants, Willemijn Van Haeften, Xander Lub, Pascal Ravesteijn, Pascale Peters Sep 2026

Public Sector Experiences Of Disruptions In The Psychological Contract: The Influence Of Ideological Currency And Digital Transformation On Public Servants, Willemijn Van Haeften, Xander Lub, Pascal Ravesteijn, Pascale Peters

Communications of the IIMA

Digital transformation is reshaping public-sector work and may alter how public servants evaluate their psychological contract with their employer. This research-in-progress examines how critical incidents associated with digital transformation disrupt psychological contracts and how ideological currency, the perceived commitment to valued societal causes or principles, shapes subsequent trajectories toward renegotiation, repair, or exit. The study uses a qualitative phenomenological design based on semi-structured interviews with 20 employees from five Dutch municipalities experiencing transformation-related changes. The Critical Incident Technique is combined with the dynamic psychological contract phase model to reconstruct disruption trajectories, while thematic analysis identifies recurring patterns across cases. Preliminary …

Baseline Psychosocial Stress And Allostatic Load In Patients Initiating Cancer Therapy, Campbell Speakman, Margaret Quinn Rosenzweig, Emmanuel Komladzah Sep 2026

Baseline Psychosocial Stress And Allostatic Load In Patients Initiating Cancer Therapy, Campbell Speakman, Margaret Quinn Rosenzweig, Emmanuel Komladzah

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Introduction: Racial and economic cancer treatment disparities pose a major public health challenge. Pre-existing psychosocial stressors and overall "weathering" or allostatic load are often more profound among patients of color and those from areas of high deprivation and may impact cancer outcomes.

Purpose: This study characterized baseline allostatic load, lifetime stress, perceived discrimination, financial toxicity, quality of life, distress, symptom burden, and resilience, compared by race and area deprivation.

Methods: This analysis was drawn from the prospective, observational ALLEGIANT (Allostasis, Cellular Aging, and Cancer Outcomes) study. Patients initiating cancer therapy were recruited from cancer clinics in Western Pennsylvania. Measures included …

Predictors Of 3-Month Anxiety Among Intimate Partners Of Icd Recipients Following A P+P Intervention, Jinseon Hwang, Elaine A. Thompson, Cynthia M. Dougherty Sep 2026

Predictors Of 3-Month Anxiety Among Intimate Partners Of Icd Recipients Following A P+P Intervention, Jinseon Hwang, Elaine A. Thompson, Cynthia M. Dougherty

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Introduction: Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) survivors often require implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy, which introduces psychological challenges for patients and their intimate partners. Although the Patient plus Partner (P+P) intervention, a six-week post-discharge program, was developed to support recovery for both patient and partners, factors influencing early post-discharge partner anxiety remain unclear. This study examined predictors of 3-month partner anxiety among intimate partners of ICD recipients receiving secondary prevention.

Methods: This secondary analysis included intimate partners of patients who underwent ICD implantation for secondary prevention of ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia (n=63) from a randomized controlled trial. Partner anxiety was measured …
