The Relationship Between Student Chronotypes And Performance, Michael F. Robertson, Steven Goetz May 2018

The Relationship Between Student Chronotypes And Performance, Michael F. Robertson, Steven Goetz

Faculty Research Flash Talk

Each person experiences a day in a different way. We each have our chronotype, which is a personal pattern of circadian rhythms that influence our physiology and psychology (Pink, 2018). Everyone experiences physiological and psychological highs and lows throughout the day. Most individuals experience a peak in the morning and a physiological and psychological trough in the midafternoon. Chronobiologists have suggested that for most people, we should not attempt to do activities that require focus and attention to detail during these physiological and psychological troughs (Pink, 2018). Aviation students take a end of the course test, referred to a check …

Parental Desocialization In Sport, Julie Partridge May 2018

Parental Desocialization In Sport, Julie Partridge

Faculty Research Flash Talk

This research is an exploration of the experiences of sport parents whose children have left the athlete role, and how that desocialization has been experienced by the parents. Numerous studies have examined the transition experiences of athletes themselves, but little attention has been given to how parents, many of whom have very strong identities tied into the sport parent role, cope with leaving that role either voluntarily or involuntarily. In the first phase of this research investigating the desocialization experience of sport parents, the researchers are conducting in-depth, semi-structured interviews with participants, which will later inform the creation of a …

Shame, Kristiana M. Feeser May 2018

Shame, Kristiana M. Feeser

Faculty Research Flash Talk

The goal of this research was three-fold: to understand the effect of shame-inducing feedback on a novel motor behavior skill, to understand the effect of shame-inducing feedback on psychological perception of experience, and to use shame- and guilt-proneness to predict other psychological variables. Participants engaged in a novel motor behavior task in which they used a stylus to trace a moving light (rotary pursuit). Depending on experimental condition, their feedback was either shame inducing or neutral. Following 20 rounds, participants were given a survey. Factors evaluated in the survey included: performance on a rotary pursuit task, motivation, shame-proneness, guilt-proneness, fixing …

This data helps the program add additional evidence for the efficacy of exercise programs in this often underserved population. The program also provides an opportunity for SIUC students to obtain practical, hands-on exercise testing/training experience while building their resumes. As they work with program participants, students apply knowledge …

Perspectives On Water Resources Among Anishinaabe And Non-Native Residents Of The Great Lakes Region, Andrew T. Kozich, Kathleen E. Halvorsen, Alex S. Mayer May 2018

Perspectives On Water Resources Among Anishinaabe And Non-Native Residents Of The Great Lakes Region, Andrew T. Kozich, Kathleen E. Halvorsen, Alex S. Mayer

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Climate change and human population growth could reduce household water availability in the historically water-rich Great Lakes region. It is critical to understand human-water relationships in advance of policy actions that could result from reduced water supplies. Research on household water conservation typically occurs in a reactionary nature, in settings that are already water-stressed. Furthermore, few studies involve Native American perspectives on this important topic. We used semi-structured interviews to assess residents' perspectives of Great Lakes water resources and views on household conservation, involving distinct samples of Native American and non-Native residents. Although interviewees deeply value the region's water resources, …

An Analysis Of Bilateral Tripart Hippocampal Volume And Its Relation To Spatial Processing In A Middle Childhood Sample, Emily Marler May 2018

An Analysis Of Bilateral Tripart Hippocampal Volume And Its Relation To Spatial Processing In A Middle Childhood Sample, Emily Marler

Honors Theses

Throughout the years, animal research has unearthed that certain cells in the hippocampus contribute to spatial processing, which involves an animal’s recognition of its environmental layout and directionality. In order to apply this work to human children, we will identify whether hippocampal volume is related to spatial processing, including identifying which section(s) of the hippocampus seem to be more related to processing layouts versus directionality. Based on previous literature (Goodrich-Hunsaker, Hunsaker, & Kenser, 2005; McHugh, Fillenz, Lowry, Rawlins, & Bannerman, 2010), we predicted there would be a relationship between bilateral posterior and middle hippocampal regions and spatial processing, such that …

Feminist And Holistic Pedagogies, Shay Frailey May 2018

Feminist And Holistic Pedagogies, Shay Frailey

Honors Theses

In this Honors Thesis I combine holistic and feminist educational theory, what Paulo Freire refers to as “humanizing education,” with my own critical reflection on the empowering educational journey I have taken as an undergraduate (1 Pedagogy). This has been a journey to claiming my own voice, agency, empowerment, and critical understanding of my self-becoming and how this process works for others. These social justice pedagogies have helped me understand how identity is shaped by cultural contexts and institutions like education. Using the feminist research methodology of autoethnography, I show and describe the coming together of empowering pedagogy in …

Exporting America: The U.S. Information Centers And German Reconstruction, James Podesva May 2018

Exporting America: The U.S. Information Centers And German Reconstruction, James Podesva

Dissertations

This dissertation examines the establishment of United States Information Centers in West Germany immediately after the Second World War, and their role in securing the support of West German elites for American occupation policies, particularly democratic self-government. Located at the intersection of culture, economics, and American politics, the America Houses (Amerikahäuser) educated curious Germans about the United States, presenting a carefully curated vision of American life that minimized conflict and highlighted the material and cultural prosperity enjoyed by the mythical “average American.” The Americans contended that with the adoption of democracy and a reformed market economy, affluence was something West …

Tinkering With Student Speech In The Age Of Social Media, Lola A. Burnham May 2018

Tinkering With Student Speech In The Age Of Social Media, Lola A. Burnham

Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the issue of public junior high and high school students who are punished at school for their online speech that they created when they were off-campus. Specifically, it examines the issue of when students are punished at school for online speech that criticizes teachers and administrators, rather than the issue of student-on-student cyberbullying. Because the United States Supreme Court has not yet accepted any case that involves off-campus online student speech, this dissertation summarizes and analyzes federal appellate court decisions in such cases. Appellate courts in six federal circuits have heard and ruled in cases involving students’ …

Constituted And Constituing Symbols Of The Kamëntšá Culture: Essays On Native Philosophy Of Culture, Juan Alejandro Chindoy May 2018

Constituted And Constituing Symbols Of The Kamëntšá Culture: Essays On Native Philosophy Of Culture, Juan Alejandro Chindoy

Dissertations

Drawing from child personal memories, stories, and participation in different ceremonies in Sibundoy (Colombia), as well as from scholarly papers and books on the Kamëntšá culture, a native culture settled in the southwest of Colombia, I discuss the constituted and constituting meanings of a native culture. The main argument is that storytelling, dancing, and yajé ceremonies are Kamëntšá’s symbolic ways of approaching the quest for meaning. At once constituting and constituted symbols of it, Kamëntšá symbols define its culture and sustain it alive. I use the idea of constituting symbols to underlie the experiences of creativity and adjustment of Kamëntšá …

Investigating The Etiology Of Preschoolers' Somatic Symptoms And Internalizing Problems: A Twin Study, Matthew Jamnik

Theses

This study investigated the etiology of preschoolers’ somatic symptoms and internalizing problems, using a twin sample. A specific focus was placed on the genetic (i.e., DRD4 and 5-HTTLPR) and environmental (i.e., SES, household chaos, family conflict, and maternal emotional stability) factors that were hypothesized to be associated with these problems. This project also explored the possible gene-environmental interactions (GxE) that may exist among these contributors. It was hypothesized that children who are at greatest risk due to their genotype, environment, or a combination of the two would display elevated somatic symptoms and internalizing problems, compared to children who were less …

The Effects Of Societal Threat On Authoritarianism And Social Dominance Orientation, Chasity Ratliff

Theses

The present study examined the effects of societal threat on levels of authoritarianism and social dominance orientation and investigated if those self-report measures were consistent or inconsistent with a measure of implicit attitudes regarding Americans and Immigrants. Exposure to societal threat was hypothesized to increase authoritarianism and social dominance orientation, as well as to increase implicit prejudicial attitudes, as measured by the Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (IRAP), towards out-group members. Based on prior findings, men were expected to have higher levels of social dominance orientation. As predicted, exposure to societal threat significantly increased right-wing authoritarianism and social dominance orientation. Additionally, …

Marketing Within Student Affairs: What Is The Silver Bullet?, Sydne Rensing Apr 2018

Marketing Within Student Affairs: What Is The Silver Bullet?, Sydne Rensing

Research Papers

Many universities struggle with student engagement on their campuses. The word “engagement” covers a broad spectrum of involvement and could be anything from attending events or programs, recreational activities at the student union, participating in contests, being a part of Greek life or registered student organizations, to following campus departments on social media or having a student job. Because involvement plays such a significant role in the overall university experience, it is vital to understand the needs of the current student population, market correctly, and encourage experiences outside of the classroom that will enhance students’ education and cultivate a well-rounded …

About 49 million Americans – roughly 15% of entire America - live in households that lack the means to get enough nutritious food on a regular basis. Past experiences and fear of food accessibility could affect the quality of diet and eating behavior in many ways. In this study we examine long-term trends in food insecurity and obesity over a 6-year period. We specifically examine the changing role of health behaviors in the association between food insecurity and obesity. Most studies on this topic have conducted cross-sectional analysis. Examining this association over time would help us make more careful considerations …
