The Great Divide: What Dr. Moreau Tells Us About Posthumanism And The Anthropocene, Cynthia Rosenfeld
The Great Divide: What Dr. Moreau Tells Us About Posthumanism And The Anthropocene, Cynthia Rosenfeld
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
This critique of three films of The Island of Dr. Moreau, a classic story that keeps resurfacing in popular culture, aims to shed light on the geologic era in which we live, the Anthropocene. What do these films reveal about the Western conceptualization of the differences between “human” and “animal,” and what does this conceptualization reveal about the Anthropocene? The post-human analysis primarily employs concepts from Lacan, Derrida, and Eagleton, and includes a detailed look at the role of language. Dr. Moreau’s conceit of human uniqueness (and superiority) fosters the kind of thinking that allows humanity to ignore the …
Mirror, Mirror, On The Wall: Reflections Of A Fat Girl, Lisa P. Spinazola
Mirror, Mirror, On The Wall: Reflections Of A Fat Girl, Lisa P. Spinazola
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
This paper shows a day in the life of a woman who sees herself as fat. Her reflection in the mirror is a site of conflict and strife. While she feels accomplished and confident as a teacher, mother and friend, she lacks confidence about her body, which presents a dialectical tension in her sense of self. She writes as a way to understand this dialectic and how she might learn to live a healthier, happier life where she finds balance and is not flagellating herself about her weight. She explores the role food and exercise play in her existence and …

Girl Bye: Turning From Stereotypes To Self-Defined Images, A Womanist Exploration On Crooked Room Analysis, Idrissa J. Snider
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
Intersectional research that focuses on the experiences and representations of Black women should place emphasis on examining the communication of resistance, since this focus is essential to progressing communicative approaches at the nexus of ethnicity and gender. This essay builds upon the work of Womanist (Walker, 1983) and Black Feminist scholars (Collins, 1991; Perry, 2011) in order to identify and interrogate the harmful systemic nature of various stereotypes and controlling images of Black women. These controlling images historically include representations such as the Mammie, Sapphire, Jezebel, tragic mulatto, and even newer images such as the angry black woman or the …
Comedy Makes Me Cry: Seeing Myself In Mediated Disclosures Of Mental Illness, Darren J. Valenta
Comedy Makes Me Cry: Seeing Myself In Mediated Disclosures Of Mental Illness, Darren J. Valenta
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
In this answer to the special call, I layer accounts of my reaction to Bo Burnham’s stand-up comedy special Make Happy with discussions of the stigma surrounding mental health and personal narratives about my own difficulties with anxiety. Dutta argues that “narratives are sites of contestation where cultural meanings are played out through dialogues among cultural participants” (91). He goes on to add that the sharing of narratives reveals the cultural politics involved in models of health and allows for the exploration of new possibilities (Dutta 103). In this light, disclosing struggles with anxiety or other mental illnesses represents a …
Bayesian Estimation Of Mixture Irt Models Using Nuts, Rahab Al Hakmani
Bayesian Estimation Of Mixture Irt Models Using Nuts, Rahab Al Hakmani
Dissertations
The No-U-Turn Sampler (NUTS) is a relatively new Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm that avoids the random walk behavior that common MCMC algorithms such as Gibbs sampling or Metropolis Hastings usually exhibit. Given the fact that NUTS can efficiently explore the entire space of the target distribution, the sampler converges to high-dimensional target distributions more quickly than other MCMC algorithms and is hence less computational expensive. The focus of this study is on applying NUTS to one of the complex IRT models, specifically the two-parameter mixture IRT (Mix2PL) model, and further to examine its performance in estimating model parameters …
The Evaluation Of Attitudes Towards Individuals With Mental Illness Among Counselors In Training, Randall Boen
The Evaluation Of Attitudes Towards Individuals With Mental Illness Among Counselors In Training, Randall Boen
Dissertations
Negative attitudes and stigma associated with mental illness have a profound impact on individuals who experience them. Researchers have defined stigma as the attribution of a deviant characteristic to members of a particular group. Persons with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI) face many difficulties that impact their full participation in social life. Although attitudinal reactions to individuals with SPMI have improved considerably over the last few decades, there are still areas for improvement. Limited research has been conducted to evaluate attitudes and stigma associated with individuals with SPMI among human service professionals-in-training (HSPs). For this study HSPs were defined …
Cultural Naturalism And The Market God, David Timothy Denenny
Cultural Naturalism And The Market God, David Timothy Denenny
Theses
This work employs John Dewey's cultural naturalism to explore how and why the orthodox economic tradition functions as a religious faith.Scholars such as the theologian Harvey Cox and others now view orthodox economic practice as a religion. Other scholars such as Max Weber, Alasdair MacIntyre, and numerous others view modern economic practice as exemplifying a particular ethic. The focus in this work is placed upon the destructive consequences of practicing the Market faith. This work argues that much of contemporary economic practice maintains a view of science that is incompatible with the kind of naturalism found in Classical American Pragmatism. …
Critical Incidents In Multicultural Supervision And Their Impacts On Supervisees And The Supervision Relationship, Monica Becerra
Critical Incidents In Multicultural Supervision And Their Impacts On Supervisees And The Supervision Relationship, Monica Becerra
Theses
Multicultural competency is essential in the field of psychology and a major component of training involves multicultural supervision. Neglecting cultural issues may led to negative consequences in the development of the supervisor and supervisee relationship and in turn affect the work done with clients. Using a stratified random sample of 50 graduate students in APA accredited programs and internship sites, the researchers explored the specific supervisor behaviors and interventions that represent effective and poor multicultural supervision. This qualitative replication study incorporates Chu and Chwalisz’s (1999) critical incident questionnaire (CIQ) and a demographic questionnaire. The qualitative data was analyzed using Grounded …

Global Gray Matter Morphometry Differences Between Children With Reading Disability, Adhd, And Comorbid Reading Disability/Adhd., Audreyana C Jagger-Rickels, Michelle Y Kibby, Jordan M Constance
Publications
Extensive, yet disparate, research exists elucidating structural anomalies in individuals with Reading Disability (RD) or ADHD. Despite ADHD and RD being highly comorbid, minimal research has attempted to determine shared patterns of morphometry between these disorders. In addition, there is no published research examining the morphometry of comorbid RD and ADHD (RD/ADHD). Hence, we conducted voxel-based morphometry on the MRI scans of 106 children, ages 8-12 years, with RD, ADHD, or RD/ADHD, and typically developing controls. We found right caudate and superior frontal regions in both RD and ADHD, along with areas specific to RD and to ADHD that are …

Mass Murder: American Unexceptionalism, D.C. V. Heller, And “Reasonableness”, Clayton E. Cramer
Mass Murder: American Unexceptionalism, D.C. V. Heller, And “Reasonableness”, Clayton E. Cramer
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Lower courts have used a variety of techniques to largely ignore District of Columbia v. Heller (2008) and McDonald v. Chicago (2010), primarily by defining various categories of gun ownership outside a narrow definition of the “core” of the right protected by the Second Amendment. Will this same approach be used by a future Supreme Court to effectively reverse Heller by declaring some weapons too effective for mass murder to be protected? Is mass murder exceptionally American? If so, can America’s relatively laissez-faire gun control laws be the cause? Could a narrow reading of the Second Amendment, post-District of …

The Impacts Of A Civic Engagement Cohort Program For Water Quality Professionals, Elizabeth Kallestad, Scott Chazdon, Hannah Bohn
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
In this article, researchers report the impact study results of University of Minnesota Extension's civic engagement for water quality cohort program. The cohort curriculum highlights Extension's research-informed, five-stage civic engagement model emphasizing process design and process management. Using a non-random comparison group design, a survey was conducted with participants of three civic engagement cohorts for water quality professionals, as well as a comparison group of water quality professionals not part of a cohort. Survey results were aggregated into the five stages of Extension's civic engagement process: prepare, inquire, analyze, synthesize, and act together. Findings indicated cohort participants experienced significantly better …
Using Continuous Response And Self-Report Measures To Understand Spokesperson Evaluation Processes During Water Crises, Matthew S. Vandyke, Coy Callison
Using Continuous Response And Self-Report Measures To Understand Spokesperson Evaluation Processes During Water Crises, Matthew S. Vandyke, Coy Callison
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
This study investigated how perceptions of news conference sources varied from measures taken in real-time to those taken retrospectively after exposure to news conference footage. A 4 (source type) X 4 (message replication) mixed design experiment was conducted in which participants viewed four organizational spokespersons responding to water crises involving organizations. Participants evaluated spokespersons using a handheld dial during stimulus exposure, and then, retrospectively, using self-report measures. Evaluation of source trustworthiness tended to increase over time, regardless of the type of source. However, retrospective self-report measures demonstrated that public relations practitioner credibility suffered in comparison to that of other sources. …

Engaging Stakeholders In Planning For Sea Level Rise And Resilience, Juita-Elena (Wie) Yusuf, Burton St. John, Michelle Covi, J. Gail Nicula
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
This case study describes a region-wide, multi-sectoral, and whole-of-community stakeholder engagement approach for addressing sea level rise (SLR) and flooding. This approach was implemented through a university-led community engagement event, the Hampton Roads Resilient Region Reality Check (H4RC), which allowed an examination of its effectiveness as a mechanism for capturing community-wide perceptions regarding SLR, flooding, and associated risks; engaging stakeholders in discussion within and across different groups; and assessing community willingness to address flooding and SLR. The results show that the event helped participants broaden their perspectives and understanding of flooding and SLR. In an approach that called for participants …

Adaptive Water Governance And Community Resilience: Assessing The Impact Of The Cache River Wetlands Joint Venture Partnership On Communities In The Cache River Watershed Of Southern Illinois, Rachel Emeline Boucher
Theses
Resilience is a concept that is becoming heavily researched in the sustainability and resource management literature. For rural resource-dependent communities, community resilience is the ability to adapt to various drivers of change while maintaining or enhancing community well-being. In recent decades, the field of water resource governance has been transitioning from a reliance on command-and-control institutional structures toward adaptive multi-level institutions, such as adaptive co-management and adaptive governance. These transitions offer potential opportunities for enhancing the resilience and sustainability of resource-dependent communities. However, the relationship between these emerging governance approaches and community resilience is not fully understood. The Cache River …

Prediction Of Clinical Symptoms And Psychological Flexibility Using A Novel Values Card Sort Activity, Ryan S. Kimball
Theses
Values are directly relevant in a number of theoretical orientations in psychology, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). In ACT, clarification of one’s personal values is paramount. The present study examined the ability to predict clinical symptoms and psychological flexibility using variables derived from one’s performance on the ACT Values Card Sort (ACT-VCS), a novel values clarification exercise. The independent variables, obtained from the ACT-VCS, included 1) the number of values endorsed as very important in the initial sort (i.e., valuing propensity), 2) the number of values domains represented in the final sort (i.e., values diversity), and 3) the extent …
Changes In Antisocial Attitudes And Recidivist Outcomes, Maranda Rose Quillen
Changes In Antisocial Attitudes And Recidivist Outcomes, Maranda Rose Quillen
Theses
This purpose of this study is to examine whether changes in offender antisocial attitudes predict recidivism, violent reoffense, and severity of reoffending among completers of the community based, Counter-Point treatment program. While offender antisocial attitudes changed following treatment completion, these changes did not significantly predict violent recidivism and general recidivism. However, violent offenders, upon entering the program, were more likely to recidivate violently, and a decrease in antisocial attitudes following treatment completion increased the severity of reoffending. These findings highlight that change takes time and treatment dosage may serve as an important component of maintaining attitudinal change in treatment and …
