A Psychoanalytic Reading Of William Blake's Songs Of Innocence And Of Experience, Serenah Minasian
Honors Theses
This Undergraduate Thesis enters the scholarly conversation regarding William Blake and psychoanalytic theory. This work provides a reading of Blake's Songs of Innocence and of Experience from the viewing of psychoanalysis. Jungian and Freudian theories of psychoanalysis are mostly used with incorporation of Lacan as well. Overall, this Undergraduate Thesis provides a look at Blake's works psychoanalytically and provides interpretation of them through this specific lens.
The Baadasssss And The Avant-Garde: The Radical Aesthetics And Politics Of Melvin Van Peebles, Samuel Jay Smucker
The Baadasssss And The Avant-Garde: The Radical Aesthetics And Politics Of Melvin Van Peebles, Samuel Jay Smucker
Theses
Melvin Van Peebles is best known for Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song (1971) and that film’s role in inspiring the Blaxploitation cycle of films of the early 1970s. However, it was in France, where he had emigrated like other black creatives in the 1960s, that Van Peebles became a filmmaker. Drawing on biographical research and a close reading of his films, I connect Van Peebles to the institutions and aesthetics of the French New Wave. Van Peebles radicalizes New Wave techniques by employing them to illuminate issues of racism. I generate a new reading of Sweetback which connects the experimental aesthetics …
A Qualitative Examination Of Experiences Of Acculturation, Acculturative Stress, And Coping Among Black International Students, Maame Esi Arkofoa Coleman
A Qualitative Examination Of Experiences Of Acculturation, Acculturative Stress, And Coping Among Black International Students, Maame Esi Arkofoa Coleman
Theses
This study was designed to describe the experiences of acculturation, acculturative stress, and coping behaviors among Black international students. While research exists on the acculturative and coping experiences of international students in the United States, very few studies have been designed to explicitly examine the experiences of Black international students of sub-Saharan and Caribbean origins. A majority of the existing literature has focused on experiences of Asian and Latin American international students (Malcolm & Mendoza, 2014). This study was intended to provide information about the acculturative experiences of Black international students enrolled at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Interviews were conducted …
Act-Based Statements Effect On Bartending Tips, Mariah Patz
Act-Based Statements Effect On Bartending Tips, Mariah Patz
Theses
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a behaviorally-based intervention that emphasizes psychological processes related to mindfulness, values, committed actions towards values, defusion from troubling thoughts, and acceptance. ACT is often used with populations who experience psychological inflexibility or stress, but not much research has been done understanding how ACT processes may affect everyday tasks within the common public or within business practices. The present study used a randomized controlled trial to determine the effect that statements related to ACT processes given while receiving a bar tending service altered the outcome tipping percentage from guests. The current research also discussed how …

Confronting Masculinity: The Gen X Novel (1984-2000) And The Sentimental Man, Robert E. Woolridge
Confronting Masculinity: The Gen X Novel (1984-2000) And The Sentimental Man, Robert E. Woolridge
Dissertations
Experimental novels written from 1984-2000 by authors associated with Generation X collectively struggle with common sense notions of masculinity in their various decades at the end of the twentieth century. Relying on confessional, first-person narration, first novels written by white men stage a critical engagement of outdated patriarchal norms in an effort to produce a more progressive masculinity based on sentimentality. In the 1980s, McInerney and Ellis novels, Bright Lights, Big City and Less Than Zero chronicle the struggles of empty, yuppie men who cannot make connections with their peers due to their emotionally devoid lives. By the 1990s, Douglas …

Sexual Harassment In Illinois: Public Opinion And Legislative Action, Oluwaseyi Amosu
Sexual Harassment In Illinois: Public Opinion And Legislative Action, Oluwaseyi Amosu
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
The last several years have brought sexual harassment in the public and private sector to the forefront of a national conversation. This paper addresses the issue of sexual harassment specifically within the Illinois public sector. First, to understand how Illinoisans view sexual harassment, the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute conducted statewide polling. This endeavor asked respondents about their perceptions of how well the public understands sexual harassment, how likely people who engage in harassing behavior are to be held accountable, and whether or not the respondents would be likely to vote for a political candidate accused of sexual harassment. This …

An Artistic Contemplative Inquiry: What Arrives In Co-Contemplating Assessment And Evaluation, Michelle Searle, Lynn M. Fels
An Artistic Contemplative Inquiry: What Arrives In Co-Contemplating Assessment And Evaluation, Michelle Searle, Lynn M. Fels
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
Contemporary arts-based inquiry invites us to linger in moments, to reflect upon our lives, our encounters, our relationships within the grander context of the worlds within which we dwell and those that we co-create. Here, we explore the landscape of the arts in relation to assessment and evaluation. Through a collaborative artistic contemplative inquiry, an emergent dialogue exploring assessment and evaluation is recorded and presented as a found poem, “What Arrives.” Our hope, when we embarked upon this artistic contemplation, was that we would evoke, provoke, and interrupt each other for the purpose of creating possibilities of alliance and (re)cognition …

Performing Research: Contemplating What It Means To Be A "Man", George Belliveau
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
Sharing research in performative modes opens new possibilities for meaning making. This article offers a monologue that explores my experience of working on a theatre project with military veterans. The impact of working on the creative process with veterans inspired this performed piece, and provided an opportunity to contemplate what it means to be a ‘man’ in today’s society. The article first situates performed research within current arts-based literature prior to sharing the creative piece, which is at the heart of this offering. The piece then concludes with how performed research opens the possibility for different forms of engagement and …
Sharing Footprints: Dwelling With/In Loss, Robert Christopher Nellis
Sharing Footprints: Dwelling With/In Loss, Robert Christopher Nellis
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
This essay explores spaces between— between presence and absence, model and canvas, page and thought. Launching from the cliché that love is blind, the piece reads through Jacques Derrida’s Memoirs of the Blind and its inspirations toward the paintings The Origin of Painting by Jean- Baptiste Regnault (1786) and The Invention of the Art of Drawing by Joseph-Benoit Suvée (1791) to locate spaces in between, spaces of contingency. The essay advocates not rushing through such spaces, but dwelling there—as sites of contemplation. The work engages in conversation with Lectio Divina as articulated by Mesner, Bickel, and Walsh (2015) and follows …

Raising Your Children And Appeals Right: The Importance Of Appeals In Parental Termination Proceedings, Bethany Gale Blitchington
Raising Your Children And Appeals Right: The Importance Of Appeals In Parental Termination Proceedings, Bethany Gale Blitchington
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
The judicial termination of parental rights implicates several constitutional rights, including the parental right to rear one’s child. The Supreme Court of Tennessee has addressed this issue by requiring an appellate review of every ground for termination, regardless of whether it was raised on appeal, in the case of In re Carrington H. (2016). The court based its analysis partially on safeguarding procedural due process. This article examines whether procedural due process under the Fourteenth Amendment requires such an appellate safeguard and discusses what possible alternatives a state might have.
Fairness Towards Authors: Does It Necessarily Mean Caring For The Weak?, Omri Alter
Fairness Towards Authors: Does It Necessarily Mean Caring For The Weak?, Omri Alter
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
According to a common narrative in recent copyright scholarship, authors deserve fairness in their relationship with commercial entities, such as publishers and producers. This narrative is reflected most conspicuously in a growing trend all over the world to adopt mandatory rules designed to provide authors with a larger share of the profits generated by exploitation of their work.
The most common normative argument in favor of mandatory rules rests on considerations of distributive justice, according to which authors are poor and suffer from low bargaining power. Framing the issue as a conflict between weak, starving authors and large capitalist conglomerates …

Grey Water: Agricultural Use Of Reclaimed Water In California, Bahman Sheikh, Kara L. Nelson, Brent Haddad, Anne Thebo
Grey Water: Agricultural Use Of Reclaimed Water In California, Bahman Sheikh, Kara L. Nelson, Brent Haddad, Anne Thebo
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Potential for use of recycled water is great, especially for agricultural irrigation, which comprises by far the highest percentage of water taken from developed sources in the arid and semi-arid regions of the world. In California, 80% of developed water is used for agriculture, and the same pattern prevails throughout the western United States. The potential for recycled water use in agriculture remains under-realized because of numerous impediments. Understanding how the incentives and impediments to agricultural reuse vary based on local context is critical to understanding the tradeoffs and technology requirements for different end uses of recycled water. Public perceptions …

Blue, Green, And Grey Water Quantification Approaches: A Bibliometric And Literature Review, Stanley T. Mubako
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
An array of methodologies to quantify blue, green, and grey water have emerged in recent years and are still evolving rapidly, as are efforts to come up with reliable indicators of human appropriation of freshwater resources. This study provides an overview of recent blue, green, and grey water quantification approaches by analyzing publications extracted from the Web of Science database utilizing the Network Analysis Interface for Literature Studies (NAILS) bibliometric analysis tool, covering the period 2000-2018. A steep increase in the number of blue, green, and grey water publications was observed from the year 2009, with the United States and …
Perceived Barriers To Employment For Older Displaced Workers, Luther M. Maddy Iii, John C. Cannon
Perceived Barriers To Employment For Older Displaced Workers, Luther M. Maddy Iii, John C. Cannon
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
This study attempted to determine if age was perceived as a barrier to employment for unemployed individuals above 40 years of age. The social cognitive career theory formed the foundation of this study. Job search self-efficacy was measured in 116 unemployed individuals in three states. An independent samples t test was calculated to compare the mean job search self-efficacy scores of the participants above the age of 40 to the scores of the younger participants. No significant difference was found (t(114) = 1.05, p > .05). Linear regression analysis computed a regression equation that was not significant (F …
Return To Rehabilitation: Illinois’ Evolving Juvenile Sentencing Practices In Light Of Miller V. Alabama, Brad Taylor
Return To Rehabilitation: Illinois’ Evolving Juvenile Sentencing Practices In Light Of Miller V. Alabama, Brad Taylor
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
In Miller v. Alabama, the U.S. Supreme Court held that the Eighth Amendment requires a court to, prior to sentencing juveniles to life-without-parole, consider mitigating factors attendant to youth. The Court noted that a life-without-parole sentence was only appropriate punishment for a juvenile when the juvenile’s act reflected true incorrigibility. Given the transient nature of youthful characteristics, like impetuosity, true incorrigibility is vanishingly rare. As such, after Miller, the imposition of life-without-parole sentences for juveniles should be similarly rare.
As the birthplace of the juvenile justice system, Illinois holds a special place in the history of the American …

“The Future Is In Good Hands”: A Pentadic Analysis Of President Barack Obama’S Farewell Address, R. Chase Dunn
“The Future Is In Good Hands”: A Pentadic Analysis Of President Barack Obama’S Farewell Address, R. Chase Dunn
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
President Barack Obama’s farewell address serves as a symbolic end to an eight-year tenure as president of the United States. The standard themes in Obama’s public addresses have been hope and change, and the president continues to elaborate on those here. While describing accomplishments of his administration and thanking important people, Obama uses his last address as president to craft a narrative in three strands—past, present, and future—meant to inspire civic engagement in his audience. I use Burke’s dramatistic pentad to discover how Obama rhetorically motivates his listeners towards this end. President Obama creates a sense of empowerment and audience …
