Moral Outrage Is Elicited By Others’ Beliefs Just As Much As Their Actions: Implications For Workplace Ideological Discrimination, Emily Rose Galeza
Moral Outrage Is Elicited By Others’ Beliefs Just As Much As Their Actions: Implications For Workplace Ideological Discrimination, Emily Rose Galeza
Theses
Moral outrage is an emotional, cognitive, and behavioral response to moral violations, resulting in a desire to punish the transgressor. Previous research has examined moral outrage toward transgressive behaviors, but no studies have examined the potential for moral outrage to be roused by another’s beliefs alone. Do people experience moral outrage at one another’s thoughts? If so, how do they punish someone who has roused their outrage but has “done nothing wrong”? In Study 1 (n = 209), I examined moral outrage reactions at people’s unacceptable beliefs on three topics (pedophilia, sexual assault, fraud) by comparing moral outrage elicited by …
Social Discounting Of Clean Water And Environmental Sustainability, Ashley Katz
Social Discounting Of Clean Water And Environmental Sustainability, Ashley Katz
Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine choice-making as it relates to providing a source of clean water to those at varying social distances. A discounting survey was completed by 65 participants asking them to choose between spending a specified about of money on plastic water bottles that have a 100% chance of harming the environment or spending $1000 on a water filtration system that has a 0% chance of harming the environment. Results indicated that as social distance increased, responding became more impulsive as evident by a steeper amount of discounting. For “Person #1”, 27.69% of participants chose …

Are Frontal And Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Dissociable In Their Memory Functioning?, Michelle Y Kibby, Morris J Cohen, Lisa Stanford, Yong D Park
Publications
There is controversy in the literature as to how dissociable frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) and temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) are in terms of memory deficits. Some researchers have demonstrated that FLE is associated with greater executive dysfunction including working memory, whereas TLE is associated with greater memory impairment. Others have found the two groups to be comparable in memory functioning. Hence, we examined this question in children with FLE and TLE versus typically developing controls. We found most of the expected effects when the groups with focal onset epilepsy were compared to controls. Specifically, children with left TLE performed worse …
Which Components Of Processing Speed Are Affected In Adhd Subtypes?, Michelle Y Kibby, Sarah A Vadnais, Audreyana C Jagger-Rickels
Which Components Of Processing Speed Are Affected In Adhd Subtypes?, Michelle Y Kibby, Sarah A Vadnais, Audreyana C Jagger-Rickels
Publications
The term "processing speed" (PS) encompasses many components including perceptual, cognitive and output speed. Despite evidence for reduced PS in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), little is known about which component(s) is most impacted in ADHD, or how it may vary by subtypes. Participants included 151 children, ages 8-12 years, with ADHD Predominantly Inattentive Type, ADHD Combined Type and typically developing controls using DSM-IV criteria. All children completed four measures of processing speed: Symbol Search, Coding, Decision Speed, and simple reaction time. We found children with ADHD-PI and ADHD-C had slower perceptual and psychomotor/incidental learning speed than controls and that ADHD-PI had …

Adolescents’ Perception Of The Threat Of Sexual Harassment: The Development Of An Index, Hussein Soliman, Jennifer Koran, Amal Abdelmonem,
Publications
In Egypt female adolescents are on a daily base victims of various forms of sexual harassment as young females re unable to justify their feelings, thoughts and behaviors toward such violent and hostile activities. Therefore, this study develops an adolescents’ sexual harassment index (ASHI), which measures female adolescents’ perception of the threat of sexual harassment based on cultural, environmental and societal aspects. A total of 874 adolescents age 17–18 in Egypt participated in a survey consisting of 65 items of 7 variables: threat of SH, exposure, society awareness, child’s characteristics, social engagement, religiosity and the effect of the media. Using …
Let Us Reason Together: A More Effective, Less Partisan Approach To Gun-Related Violence, Amy Swearer
Let Us Reason Together: A More Effective, Less Partisan Approach To Gun-Related Violence, Amy Swearer
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
In a time when gun-related violence is becoming an increasingly contentious and unavoidable policy topic, it can often seem as though there is no middle ground—as one common refrain goes, there are those who love guns more than their children, and those who love their children more than guns. It is a grotesque oversimplification, however, to reduce conversations on gun-related violence to conversations about gun control, much less to accusations of ill-intent on the part of those opposing it. There is, indeed, a path of least resistance for meaningfully combating gun-related violence, and it is to focus on the role …
Examination Of Psychiatric Health Disparities & Selected Laws, Rahn Kennedy Bailey
Examination Of Psychiatric Health Disparities & Selected Laws, Rahn Kennedy Bailey
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
Providing adequate healthcare to individuals in the United States is an ambitious goal. Healthcare is at the confluence of medicine, politics, economics, philosophy, ethics, and the law. Many poignant questions are brought forth when examining this multifaceted issue: Does every individual deserve access to adequate healthcare? How does one quantify, establish, attribute, and enforce a uniform cost to healthcare? Is optimal healthcare only to be enjoyed by those with abundant resources? Some, including Martin Luther King, have contended that healthcare is a human right. Academics and politicians have spent many years attempting to conjure up answers to these fundamental questions. …
“Catfishing”: A Comparative Analysis Of U.S. V. Canadian Catfishing Laws & Their Limitations, Antonella Santi
“Catfishing”: A Comparative Analysis Of U.S. V. Canadian Catfishing Laws & Their Limitations, Antonella Santi
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
In recent years, the internet has proven to be an “effective tool” in facilitating communication between individuals on a global scale. However, despite its advantages, the internet has also proven to be an “effective tool” for perpetrators who mask themselves behind a computer screen and deceive others through online impersonation for malicious purposes, self-gain or pastime. This is otherwise known as “catfishing.” In response to the prevailing nature of catfishing today and the absence of laws to address the issue, this note conducts a comparative analysis of the existing anti-catfishing laws in both the U.S. and Canada. Part II provides …

Developing Water Leaders As Catalysts For Change: The Nebraska Water Leaders Academy, Mark E. Burbach, Connie Reimers-Hild
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Managing water resources is increasingly complex and dynamic. Sustaining freshwater ecosystem services in the face of increasing challenges and emerging threats is a supreme leadership challenge. Leadership development program designers should look to social science theories and methods to prepare leaders to catalyze the change necessary to meet future challenges. This paper provides evidence that a new generation of water leaders is needed; and correspondingly, there is a need for new leadership development programs. The Nebraska Water Leaders Academy and its evaluation is presented as a case study of a successful program training leaders in social science-based skills in order …

Gender And The Enactment Of Suicide Bombings By Boko Haram, Jordan N. Galehan
Dissertations
The Boko Haram terror group has utilized more women as suicide bombers than any other group in history. While prior research has examined why this phenomenon is occurring, and what makes Boko Haram a unique terror group, the present study examines how these attacks are being perpetrated, or enacted, by the female bombers. Utilizing the Global Terrorism Database (GTD), which is the largest terrorism incident database available, the study examined the incidents of female suicide bombings perpetrated by Boko Haram. The open-sourced citations provided by the GTD were compiled and turned into a complementary qualitative dataset. Overall, there were 151 …
Social Media Footprints Of Public Perception On Energy Issues In The Conterminous United States, David Leifer
Social Media Footprints Of Public Perception On Energy Issues In The Conterminous United States, David Leifer
Theses
Energy has been at the top of the national and global political agenda along with other concomitant challenges, such as poverty, disaster and climate change. Social perception on various energy issues, such as its availability, development and consumption deeply affect our energy future. This type of information is traditionally collected through structured energy surveys. However, these surveys are often subject to formidable costs and intensive labor, as well as a lack of temporal dimensions. Social media can provide a more cost-effective solution to collect massive amount of data on public opinions in a timely manner that may complement the survey. …

A Preliminary Investigation Of A Values Intervention And A Values Reminder On Clinically Relevant Outcomes, Bruce Clark
Theses
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is designed to target psychological flexibility, broadly defined as engagement with personal values regardless of the presence of difficult private events. As engagement with valued behaviors is imperative to psychological flexibility, clarification of values is an essential skill for clients to learn. Practicing of skills in treatment has historically been a difficult hurdle for clinicians to implement between sessions for clients as well. The present study examined the utility of a novel values card sort activity, as well as the utility of a rubber band to act as a reminding agent for engagement with values. …
An Evaluation Of The Impact Of Anger On Aggression In Pretend Play And The Role Of Pretend Play In Regulating Anger In Preschoolers, Kristen Boog
Theses
Multiple studies have supported the link between anger and aggression. It is not uncommon for anger to result in aggressive acts, especially in children still learning socially appropriate ways of coping. Furthermore, childhood aggression is typically viewed as a concerning act that should be reduced or eliminated. However, some research shows that within pretend play, aggression can be adaptive. Studies have supported the Mastery/Catharsis hypothesis, the theory that aggression in pretend play acts as a release of emotions and processing of events, by showing that children who exhibit more aggression within their pretend play exhibit less aggression outside of play. …

The Climate Of Opinion In Illinois 2008 - 2019: Gridlock Broken?, John Jackson, Charles Leonard, Shiloh Leah Deitz
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
The current report is an extension of the longitudinal data report we provided in an earlier Simon Review based on the 2008 through 2016 polls (Jackson, Leonard, and Deitz, 2016). In major respects the current report is a revision and update to that original paper, continuing and revising our analysis of the political narrative and history in Illinois. That paper was subtitled: The Roots of Gridlock. The 2016 paper reflected the deep polarization and gridlock that had made Illinois a dysfunctional state at that point in its history. The current report extends the analysis by an additional three years, and …

The Lion’S Gaze: Filmmaking As An Awareness Practice, Robyn Traill
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
This is an extract from a Masters study describing my exploration of the art of film as an inner awareness practice from the view of the Buddhist yogic tradition and the teachings by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche called dharma art. I call this contemplative film practice. The article speaks to the initial pre-production and production phases of this research where formless Mahamudra meditations were most important. A camera lens was employed as a cue or reminder to practice the lens of awareness while capturing moving images. In the post-production phase, the creative meditations within Buddhist yogas became a major reference point: visualization, …

This paper is an in depth research that focuses on the experiences and representations of Black women in popular television shows like Scandal and Insecure. The research will show how these portrayals effect Black women in society and the impressions of Black women by the viewers of these television shows. Black women have always been the center of misrepresentations in television leading to limitations in character roles and appearances. These stereotypical roles effect how others look at Black women and it can also reflect on how Black women view themselves. The portrayals I will focus on will be stereotypes, …
Cultural Narratives On Constraints To Community Engagement In Urban Water Restoration, Amit Pradhananga, Mae Davenport, Emily Green
Cultural Narratives On Constraints To Community Engagement In Urban Water Restoration, Amit Pradhananga, Mae Davenport, Emily Green
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Natural resource professionals increasingly recognize that water protection and restoration efforts require not only technical solutions, but also the active engagement of stakeholders who live and work in the local community. People of color, and those of lower income brackets, are frequently underrepresented in water-related programming or decision-making, although they are often disproportionately affected by water problems. Effective engagement of diverse community members in water programs and projects requires understanding and addressing constraints to action. We conducted 25 interviews with community members who live or work in a highly urbanized Minnesota watershed to explore perceived obstacles to community engagement in …
Development And Validation Of New Models And Metrics For The Assessments Of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss, Wisam Subhi Talib Al-Dayyeni
Development And Validation Of New Models And Metrics For The Assessments Of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss, Wisam Subhi Talib Al-Dayyeni
Dissertations
Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is one of the most common illnesses that is frequently reported in the occupational and military sectors. Hearing loss due to high noise exposure is a major health problem with economic consequences. Industrial and military noise exposures often contain high-level impulsive noise components. The presence of these impulsive noise components complicates the assessment of noise levels for hearing conservation purposes. The current noise guidelines use equal energy hypothesis (EEH) based metrics to evaluate the risk of hearing loss. A number of studies show that the current noise metrics often underestimates the risk of hearing loss in …
