Progressive Muscle Relaxation Program Plan For A Division 1 Women's Soccer Team, Summer Jones Apr 2020

Progressive Muscle Relaxation Program Plan For A Division 1 Women's Soccer Team, Summer Jones

Research Papers

Anxiety leads to increases in heart rate, palpitations, blood pressure, and the production of stress hormones and has been found to have an inverted-u relationship with sports performance. This has made modulating anxiety crucial for improved sports performance and has led to research into various techniques for anxiety regulation. Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) is one technique that has been extensively studied and has found overlapping improvements in stress, anxiety, heart rate, mood, musculoskeletal fatigue, and cognitive functioning with an abundance of this research focusing on soccer athletes. Specifically, with cognitive functioning, improvements in reaction time during periods of fatigue have …

Frontal Volume As A Potential Source Of The Comorbidity Between Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder And Reading Disorders., Michelle Y Kibby, Sarah M Dyer, Sylvia E Lee, Maria Stacy

Publications

Prefrontal volume reductions commonly are demonstrated in ADHD, but the literature examining prefrontal volume in reading disorders (RD) is scant despite their also having executive functioning (EF) deficits. Furthermore, only a few anatomical studies have examined the frontal lobes in comorbid RD/ADHD, though they have EF deficits similar to RD and ADHD. Hence, we examined frontal gyri volume in children with RD, ADHD, RD/ADHD and controls, as well as their relationship to EF for gyri found to differ between groups. We found right inferior frontal (RIF) volume was smaller in ADHD, and smaller volume was related to worse behavioral regulation. …

River-Ditch Flow Statistical Relationships In A Traditionally Irrigated Valley Near Taos, New Mexico, Jose J. Cruz, Alexander G. Fernald, Dawn M. Vanleeuwen, Steven J. Guldan, Carlos G. Ochoa Jan 2020

River-Ditch Flow Statistical Relationships In A Traditionally Irrigated Valley Near Taos, New Mexico, Jose J. Cruz, Alexander G. Fernald, Dawn M. Vanleeuwen, Steven J. Guldan, Carlos G. Ochoa

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Current and predicted drought and population growth challenge the longevity of irrigation systems of northern New Mexico. Irrigation ditches, also known as acequias, draw runoff directly from rivers without use of storage reservoirs, so it is important to understand the effects of changing river flow on irrigation flow. This study sought to examine river-ditch relationships in an agricultural valley of the region. A first order linear model was used to fit the river-ditch flow relationship on which daily river flow was the explanatory variable and daily ditch flow the response variable. A strong positive relationship between river and ditch flow …

A Review Of Water Resources Education In Geography Departments In The United States, Mike Pease, Philip L. Chaney, Joseph Hoover

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Geographers have long played an important role in water resources scholarship; however, academic literature has not focused on the teaching contributions of geographers in this area. To address this gap, we cataloged courses taught and faculty interests for geography departments in the United States with a stated focus on water resources. We identified 129 departments with both courses and faculty having water resources expertise. The majority of water-related courses focused on climatology or climate change, suggesting that students are regularly provided opportunities to learn about water topics primarily through the lens of climatology and water resources. We also summarize a …

Indicators Per Factor In Confirmatory Factor Analysis: More Is Not Always Better, Jennifer Koran Jan 2020

Indicators Per Factor In Confirmatory Factor Analysis: More Is Not Always Better, Jennifer Koran

Publications

Although some research in confirmatory factor analysis has suggested that more indicators per factor is generally better, studies have also documented that sample size requirements increase as model size increases. The present study used Monte Carlo simulation to investigate the effect of indicators per factor on sample size requirements. Results demonstrated a nonlinear association between the number of indicators per factor and the minimum required sample size while avoiding six important consequences for the analysis, such as bias in the model chi-square statistic. There is an upper limit for the desirable number of indicators per factor, and this upper limit …

White-Handed Gibbons Discriminate Context-Specific Song Compositions., Julie Andrieu, Samuel G Penny, Hélène Bouchet, Suchinda Malaivijitnond, Ulrich H. Reichard, Klaus Zuberbühler

Publications

White-handed gibbons produce loud and acoustically complex songs when interacting with their neighbours or when encountering predators. In both contexts, songs are assembled from a small number of units although their composition differs in context-specific ways. Here, we investigated whether wild gibbons could infer the 'meaning' when hearing exemplars recorded in both contexts (i.e. 'duet songs' vs. 'predator songs'). We carried out a playback experiment by which we simulated the presence of a neighbouring group producing either its duet or a predator song in order to compare subjects' vocal and locomotor responses. When hearing a recording of a duet song, …

#Criticalreading #Wickedproblem, Carolyn V. Williams Jan 2020

#Criticalreading #Wickedproblem, Carolyn V. Williams

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

A majority of incoming law students lack adequate critical reading skills. In order to effectively address this problem, all stakeholders must recognize that this is a “wicked problem.” A wicked problem is one that cannot be definitively described or understood since it is seen differently by different stakeholders, has numerous causes, and is often the symptom of other problems. Addressing this wicked problem requires participation from a myriad of legal education stakeholders and cannot be solved by legal writing professors alone, even with help from academic support staff.

Part II of this Article describes what critical reading is, the proof …

The Flipped Classroom In Esl Teacher Education: An Example From Call, Yuyen Lee, Katherine I. Martin Jan 2020

The Flipped Classroom In Esl Teacher Education: An Example From Call, Yuyen Lee, Katherine I. Martin

Articles

The flipped classroom is one of many technology-enhanced teaching strategies. In this approach, students are responsible for initial learning at home (often via instructional videos) and class time is used for problem-solving and activities to deepen understanding. Although research on and use of the flipped classroom in language education is growing, little work has examined its use in teacher education, particularly for language teachers. To address this gap, this study examined the flipped classroom through the eyes of pre-service language teachers to reveal what hinders them from or encourages them to adopt this approach. Data were collected from students in …

Asylum’S Revolving Door: The Future Of Domestic Violence Claims Post -A-B-, Tomei Peppard

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

As global migration reaches unprecedented levels, the United States’ immigration system is struggling to keep up with the growing demand. Prior to June 2018, a number of domestic violence victims, particularly from the most dangerous parts of Central America, sought and received asylum in the United States. However, after the Attorney General issued his decision in Matter of A-B-, thousands of domestic violence victims were precluded from claiming asylum, leaving many victims without any options for relief.

Although domestic violence may not easily fit within the statutory scheme of asylum as interpreted by the Attorney General, a modified version of …

Athletic Identity, Greg Camillone Jan 2020

Athletic Identity, Greg Camillone

Research Papers

Limited data exists in college athletics about mental health conditions, while physical health remains the higher priority. In order to contribute to the limited understanding of student-athletes’ cognitive behavior, a documentary on collegiate student-athletes is produced, utilizing athletic identity as its main theme. Furthermore, the documentary shares personal experiences of how athletes have handled the transition from athletic role to an alternate identity, and how that change effected them mentally.

The purpose of this study is to present evidence from a Division I athletic program to contribute towards answering the following questions:

  1. Are collegiate student-athletes struggling mentally with life after …

The Exploration In The Use Of Andragogy In Coaching Adult Crossfit Athletes, Tiffany Peltier

Research Papers

In 1970, Malcolm Knowles defined andragogy as “the art and science of helping adults learn” (Knowles, 1970 p. 38) and his theory has been used in higher education institutions and many organizations since then. The andragogy philosophy is examined in this qualitative study to determine the value of utilizing andragogy in coaching adult CrossFit athletes. While there are many facets to andragogy, this study specifically uses Malcolm Knowles’ assumptions and principles of adult learners and Bob Pike Group’s 5 Laws of Adult Learning in Creative Training Techniques (1989). The coaches who participated in this study are current CrossFit coaches in …

The Role Of The Frequency Of Trauma On The Effects Of Ptsd And Health On Firefighters And Police Officers, Lizbeth Cantu Cantu

Research Papers

This research paper is examining the role of frequency of trauma and the effects of PTSD and health on firefighters and police officers. There have been mixed findings regarding the relationship between trauma, PTSD, and health. Further research is needed to better understand these relationships, especially in high risks occupations such as firefighters and police officers. Firefighters and police officers are at greater risk for developing PTSD, negative health outcomes, and be exposed to multiple traumas and it is important to study how these relate. Furthermore, there is little research investigating the relationship of the frequency of trauma, PTSD, and …

With longer workdays and the ever-growing technological base of society, inactivity and poor diet have become a staple in western civilization (Sharma & Majumdar, 2009). Between meeting the demands of work, family, and other responsibilities that may intrude on a day-to-day basis, maintaining one’s health can be a challenge. This struggle not only affects an individual’s health, but their external and social life as well, as decreased productivity and missed days of work may also be outcomes of poor health maintenance. The development of employee wellness programs has been an effective way to cope with the resultant health effects brought …

Getting “Woke” On Intersectionality: Illuminating The Rhetorical Significance Of Disability Discourse In Feminist Activist Spaces, Danielle C. Biss Dec 2019

Getting “Woke” On Intersectionality: Illuminating The Rhetorical Significance Of Disability Discourse In Feminist Activist Spaces, Danielle C. Biss

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

In the 28 years since the establishment of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), individuals with disabilities still live on the margins in social, public, and mediated discourse. Women of color with disabilities, in particular, still struggle to challenge their positionality on the margins due to multifaceted layers of oppression, ranging from sexism, racism, classism, and ableism as further complexities of identity. Yet, in a society with such disregard for and contestation involving disability issues, there is hope with disability activist Vilissa Thompson. In this rhetorical analysis, I examine Thompson as a marginal rhetor whose disability activism serves as a …

Synthetic Cannabinoids: Characterizing Their Use And Cessation, Richard Vernon Turner Dec 2019

Synthetic Cannabinoids: Characterizing Their Use And Cessation, Richard Vernon Turner

Dissertations

Since their introduction to the United States in 2008, synthetic cannabinoids became the most widely used recreational drug behind marijuana, then regressed to an estimated prevalence of less than 1%. Contrary to expectations for a drug declining in use, emergency department presentations and acute poisonings related to the use of synthetic cannabinoids are increasing. Alongside this phenomenon, a growing body of literature is beginning to uncover a relationship between psychosis and synthetic cannabinoid use. A current gap in the literature exists surrounding harm prevention methods and targeted intervention strategies for users of synthetic cannabinoids. To date, no known studies have …
