Studio As Collage: Familiar And Strange, Alison Shields
Studio As Collage: Familiar And Strange, Alison Shields
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
In this visual essay, I present an artistic inquiry I created as I examine the studio as a space to dwell, a space to daydream and a prompt for the imagination. I draw from previous research about artist studios and a visual archive created of objects within the studio as I re-imagine the studio as a collage; it is a place filled with odd juxtapositions of images, artworks, ideas and space that may produce new connections and imaginings. Through presenting the studio as both subject and process, I encourage readers to embrace the strangeness within familiar places.
Silent Interruptions: Democratizing Academic Discourse Through Wordless Narrative Research, Jeff Horwat
Silent Interruptions: Democratizing Academic Discourse Through Wordless Narrative Research, Jeff Horwat
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
Emerging in the early twentieth century, wordless novels portrayed stories of working-class laborers, immigrants, and other marginalized groups overlooked and silenced by industrialization. Wordless novels visually operationalize their silence by presenting their narratives without words to call attention to hidden struggles of different social groups exploited under capitalism, colonialism, and other forms of systemic violence. This paper explores how the generative power of visual silence forces a pause in hegemonic discourses to create space for reflection and social change. Drawing from the collectivist ethos of wordless novels, wordless narrative research is introduced as a method of creative inquiry to study, …
Data’S Entanglements: Artmaking As Corresponding Companion During Diffractive Analysis, Kelly Clark/Keefe
Data’S Entanglements: Artmaking As Corresponding Companion During Diffractive Analysis, Kelly Clark/Keefe
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
This essay invites readers into two creative correspondences that emerged during the author’s involvement in a participatory arts-based research project called Life Lines. The Life Lines project aimed at engaging a small group of young adults alongside researchers in their use of multimodal arts practices to inquire into what makes young adult identity work work the way that it does. In Life Lines the phenomenon of identity and the approaches to inquiry used to explore it were conceptualized through a material feminist framework that proposes the co-constituting nature of meaning and matter (i.e., bodies, atmospheres, and objects of …
The Way Of The Crane, Alexandra Fidyk
The Way Of The Crane, Alexandra Fidyk
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
Using pastiche, a dreamscape and reflection upon it, offers entry to a centring practice. In holding both, a new image emerges. The dreamscape—an unexpected scene of cranes in joyous dance—unfolds as actual dream and offers a metaphor for understanding the dreamer’s life. By extension, the dream returns practice as a syn- aesthetic engagement, which she calls expressive arts pedagogy. In this condensed yet nuanced rumination, personal and professional, poetic and haptic, participating and witnessing blur. This practice, the way of the Crane, is timely because it introduces, by embodying its own phenomona, a relational pedogogy for our troubled times—a pedagogy …

Utilizing Esketamine Short-Term With New Oral Antidepressants In Patients With Treatment Resistant Depression And Suicidal Ideation To Minimize Post-Discharge Suicide Attempts: A Systematic Review, Ebony Sy Montgomery
SIU Journal of Medical Science Scholarly Works
Purpose: To assess whether esketamine can be utilized short-term while waiting for a new oral antidepressant to reach therapeutic level in patients admitted for treatment resistant depression and suicidal ideation.
Method: A PubMed search was conducted using the advanced search builder, and the terms “esketamine” and “suicide” were entered with the “5 years” filter. This resulted in 90 articles. Of these, only three articles were randomized controlled trials that were considered relevant for this systematic review.
Results: Intranasal esketamine was effective for the rapid reduction of depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation and continued to be effective for depression past the …
The Unacknowledged Realities Of Extraterritorial Taxation, Laura Snyder
The Unacknowledged Realities Of Extraterritorial Taxation, Laura Snyder
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
The U.S. extraterritorial tax system has evolved such that today it is more consequential than one century ago. The system, conceived in the stigmatization of overseas Americans, consists of highly penalizing taxation and banking policies that make it difficult for overseas Americans to live normally. The IRS is also a victim: it is unable to administer the system.
Many have sought to educate policymakers and the public. Detailed survey reports have been issued, documenting how overseas Americans experience the system. Research articles have been published, exposing certain problems of the system and, in some cases, proposing solutions. To date, such …
The Evaluation Of Juvenile Rehabilitative Approaches, Rylie Wheeler
The Evaluation Of Juvenile Rehabilitative Approaches, Rylie Wheeler
Research Papers
The current research seeks to evaluate current juvenile rehabilitative approaches and analyze their effectiveness in reducing juvenile offending behaviors. The juvenile justice system is analyzed from a historical perspective beginning prior to the establishment of the juvenile justice system in the 19th century and leading to the current approaches of the 21st century. Developmental research has found that most juveniles will desist from delinquency on their own by naturally growing out of their offending behavior. However, when juveniles become involved in the justice system the opportunity to age out of offending behavior is limited. Recognizing this, the juvenile …

An Examination Of The Complex Interplay Of Criminal Risk And Mental Health Functioning, Maris Adams
An Examination Of The Complex Interplay Of Criminal Risk And Mental Health Functioning, Maris Adams
Research Papers
The undeniable overrepresentation of individuals with serious mental illness in the criminal justice system is a complex matter. Despite persistent assumptions that mental illness is the source of criminal behavior, research has continued to find a weak relationship between mental illness and criminal behavior. As a result, researchers have contended that the seeming link between mental illness and violence is misleading and distracts from the presence of other factors (such as criminogenic risk) that have an established relationship to criminal behavior. The current review of literature will investigate serious mental illness among justice-involved persons, touching on the historical context, theorized …
Pre-Session Pairing Impacts On Compliance, Britton Dallas
Pre-Session Pairing Impacts On Compliance, Britton Dallas
Research Papers
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability with persistent deficits in communication, social interactions, and the occurrence of repetitive or restricted patterns of behavior. Individuals with ASD also commonly engage in challenging behaviors. Early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI), based on applied behavioral analysis (ABA), is a recommended treatment for children with ASD to address these deficits and excesses. Challenging behaviors in those with ASD have been derived by the presentation of instructions. To circumvent challenging behaviors during instruction periods, research has recommended that pre-session pairing should occur prior to initiating demands. In the present study, three children diagnosed with …

Imperfect Interventions: A Review Of Current And Novel Treatment Approaches For Maladaptive Perfectionism, Sarah Loew
Imperfect Interventions: A Review Of Current And Novel Treatment Approaches For Maladaptive Perfectionism, Sarah Loew
Research Papers
Transdiagnostic in nature, perfectionism acts as a predisposing and maintaining factor for various psychological and health conditions affecting individuals worldwide. With the prevalence of maladaptive perfectionism increasing, the implications of individuals struggling with perfectionism are significant. Consequently, it is incumbent upon researchers to continue examining the complexities of perfectionism as a construct and develop effective treatments to decrease perfectionism and associated symptoms. Thus, the current review of literature examines current and novel psychotherapy interventions from a categorical or dimensional viewpoint and the efficacy of the intervention for perfectionism and co-occurring symptoms. Further, the review discusses and proposes future research recommendations …

The Blue Wall Of Conformity: The Experiences Of Marginalized Police Officers, Jamie Stephens
The Blue Wall Of Conformity: The Experiences Of Marginalized Police Officers, Jamie Stephens
Research Papers
Intersectionality describes the lived experiences that are uniquely shaped by an individual’s intersecting identities. Understanding these experiences and how they vary from context to context can be insightful for society in understanding mechanisms of oppression. Police departments have historically upheld toxic masculine standards that lead to discrimination against society and those within their walls. This paper seeks to understand why marginalized officers commit to the police subculture and behave in similar fashions as their privileged counterparts despite being discriminated against on and off the job and experiencing job stress and dissatisfaction. I argue that marginalized officers commit to the culture …

This project aims to share the experience of a South Korean immigrant woman in the United States in her journey of adopting a White embryo through the medium of a photographic essay. In doing so, the objective is to explore how the changing ethnoscape of the world and Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) is bringing the world together, the ways in which it has created a provision for an inversion of adoption norms simultaneously enabling mother-child bonding experiences from conception to childbirth, which is largely lacking in traditional methods of adoption. Although there are benefits and possibilities created via ART, any …
The Impact Of Game Play On Children’S Impulse Control In Early Education Settings, Sara Rodehaver
The Impact Of Game Play On Children’S Impulse Control In Early Education Settings, Sara Rodehaver
Theses
Executive functioning skills, especially impulse control, have been widely studied andinterventions have been developed to improve impulse control in young children. Play has also been studied for its benefits to young children’s development. Play skills have also been taught to students with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However, play has not often been utilized to teach impulse control directly. The current study attempted to define the components of impulse control as conditional discrimination, and to apply those discrimination skills in early childhood settings for students with no diagnosis. Kindergarten children participated in baseline measuring of conditional discrimination …
Revising The Scope Of The Fourth Amendment Community Caretaking Exception On Behalf Of Older Adults, Mackenzie R. Lyons
Revising The Scope Of The Fourth Amendment Community Caretaking Exception On Behalf Of Older Adults, Mackenzie R. Lyons
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
The United States Supreme Court has consistently held that citizens have heightened privacy rights in their homes. Using this reasoning as its justification, in Caniglia v. Strom, the Supreme Court held that the police cannot enter a home under their community caretaking powers. The Fourth Amendment’s Community Caretaking Exception gives police and other emergency services the ability to render aid and protect the public, a function that is completely detached from criminal investigatory powers.
By limiting this exception and not allowing it to apply within a home, the Court is placing potential risks on the health and safety of the …
Termination Of Parental Rights And An Assessment Of Rights To Subsequent Children In The State Of Illinois, Kayla C. Ranta
Termination Of Parental Rights And An Assessment Of Rights To Subsequent Children In The State Of Illinois, Kayla C. Ranta
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
In the United States, it is considered a fundamental constitutional liberty for a parent to be able to control the upbringing of their children. Under this construction, unless a parent’s care reaches the extent of abuse or neglect, affecting a child’s health, welfare, or safety, they should be free to parent their child(ren). Yet, despite this construction, a finding of parental unfitness as to one child will allow an Illinois family court to terminate the parental rights of that individual toward all subsequent children. This process does not currently have any exceptions for parents whose circumstances have changed or who …

This study aimed to examine the risks construction workers in Kuwait face due to increasing temperatures. The environmental conditions for construction workers include working in hot and humid environments, wearing protective clothing, and performing hard physical work. These aspects place them at an increased risk for occupational heat stress. The health impacts of occupational heat exposure for construction workers are heat-related diseases, occupational accidents/ injuries, urological diseases, dysfunctional reproductive system, reduced mental health and cognitive functioning, vision and eye problems, and death. Heat exposure affects workers' health through heat-related illnesses, including heavy sweating, dizziness, muscle pain, fatigue, skin itchiness, and …

Many believe racism doesn’t exist anymore. In fact, racism is still present, it’s evident in the black community when looking at health. Statistics show that black women specifically encounter more health issues than other races. This thesis touches on generational trauma, feminism, and health collectives. This is a tool for a person looking to heal themselves and start a new health journey. This research assures you don’t have to do this alone and is a step toward mitigation in the black community.
Reflections On The Adaptation Of A Postgraduate Degree In Water Management From In-Person To Remote Delivery, Murray Clamen, Emma Anderson, Johanna Dipple, Jan Adamowski
Reflections On The Adaptation Of A Postgraduate Degree In Water Management From In-Person To Remote Delivery, Murray Clamen, Emma Anderson, Johanna Dipple, Jan Adamowski
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
In early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic spurred the rapid adaptation of university course delivery to an online format. Though in-person delivery partially resumed in the Fall of 2021, future conditions may favor a return to, or addition of, remote delivery. It is therefore important for instructors, program directors, and institutions to capitalize on this learning opportunity and reflect on adaptation measures’ successes (and failures) to inform future online course design. The reworking of McGill University's Master of Science Program in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) provides a case study to evaluate the adaptation of remote teaching of water resource management. …
Hip Hop Music And Communicative Messages: Non-White Resistance Of Marginalization Experienced In America, Fatima Albrehi
Hip Hop Music And Communicative Messages: Non-White Resistance Of Marginalization Experienced In America, Fatima Albrehi
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
The purpose of this research is to understand how non-white, marginalized races and/or ethnicgroups feel about utilizing hip hop music to address and combat structural violence. Structuralviolence includes any institutional, social, and political barriers that prevent equality. Twenty-six non-white participantswere recruited and asked to listen to and watch music videos for three contemporary hip hop songs: Nowhere Fast by Eminem ft. Kehlani (2017), This is Americaby Childish Gambino (2018), and Nothin’ Newby 21 Savage (2017). Participants then conversed with one another through a focus group session in which questions were asked about how they felt …
Globalizing Sexual Violence: Charting A Path For Future Research, Adam J. Whiteside
Globalizing Sexual Violence: Charting A Path For Future Research, Adam J. Whiteside
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
Sexual violence is a global issue with devastating consequences. Existing research primarily focuses on its prevalence globally or how countries understand sexual violence. Additionally, media reports often misrepresent sexual violence, fail to capture its complexities, and ignore larger gender issues at play. This article synthesizes extant research using a feminist intersectional approach to provide a basis for comparing how sexual violence is discursively constructed globally. More specifically, how historical, cultural, and socioeconomic discourses underscore the perpetration and media framing of sexual violence. To this end, I reviewed 49 articles on sexual violence in India and South Africa with an eye …
Coats Of Fire: Rhetorical Identity Negotiations Of Feminist Evangelical Christians, Karly L. Poyner
Coats Of Fire: Rhetorical Identity Negotiations Of Feminist Evangelical Christians, Karly L. Poyner
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
This paper examines the identity negotiations of undergraduate students who identify as both feminist and evangelical Christian. Studies of the negotiation of religious identities and social identities have primarily focused on contexts such as sexuality/religion, context/location, and culture/religion. This study, however, focuses on young adults attending private, religious universities while openly identifying as religious and feminist. By pinpointing Christian universities, this study uncovers an additional layer of tension, since these schools “arguably exert a stronger influence over their students than churches, religious denominations, or parachurch ministries” (Gardner, 2017, p. 33). From 14 interviews with feminist Christian students using Ting-Toomey’s INT …
Queering Creativity: Why Maximalism Matters, Ac Panella
Queering Creativity: Why Maximalism Matters, Ac Panella
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
Creative studies has been a growing field that is often focused on either the psychological or social process. However, each of these approaches tends to erase the role of identity or political process. By introducing queer theory to creative theory we can start to see how the creative process is a way of challenging normative assumptions of being. This article will use the work of performance artist Taylor Mac as a focal point for the ways that queer identity and theory inform creative theory.

The (De)Criminalization Of Consensual Sex Work: Implications For Illinois And The United States, Chloe Goldbach
The (De)Criminalization Of Consensual Sex Work: Implications For Illinois And The United States, Chloe Goldbach
Paul Simon Institute Graduate Student Papers
In-person consensual sex work, or prostitution, is criminalized and stigmatized throughout much of the United States and the world. Sex workers, pro-sex work advocacy organizations, and researchers have suggested that decriminalization of in-person consensual sex work has significant public health and economic benefits for sex workers and society more broadly. This paper addresses the issue of sex work legislation, with a primary focus on the United States and the state of Illinois. First, an overview of sex work, individuals involved with sex work, and differences between and conflations with human trafficking are discussed. The paper then focuses on five common …
