Experiences With Writing And Reading Neuropsychological Reports: Neuropsychologist And Parent Perspectives, Zsofia Imre
Experiences With Writing And Reading Neuropsychological Reports: Neuropsychologist And Parent Perspectives, Zsofia Imre
Dissertations
Researchers have described common problems with psychological reports over the past several decades. Some of these issues can contribute to difficulties for neuropsychologists (e.g., efficiency, insurance reimbursement). Additionally, these problems contribute to difficulties with feasibility, readability, and satisfaction for the readers of psychological reports. However, research has been limited on the perceptions of neuropsychological reports specifically, especially related to parent experiences with neuropsychological reports. Hence, this study sought to understand the current report-writing trends, parents' experiences and satisfaction, and neuropsychologists' openness to adjusting their report-writing styles. Data were obtained through surveying parents and neuropsychologists on their experiences reading and writing …
The Aesthetics Of News: Narrative Construction And Media Illiteracy In Contemporary India, Shashidhar Nanjundaiah
The Aesthetics Of News: Narrative Construction And Media Illiteracy In Contemporary India, Shashidhar Nanjundaiah
Dissertations
Amidst the public’s declining trust in news, media prosumers—that is, media consumers who have also become producers of mediated texts—are not equipped with any credible alternative mechanism to better understand the world around them. Prior academic studies of news and its delivery have not adequately explored the ideological framework we need to confront this frightening situation. This dissertation does so. I problematize the narration of news as an aesthetic process. Such mass-mediated narration stitches together our world in ideological ways. A tidal flow of stories highlights and obscures selected truths in a frenzy of “new” news cycles, the frequency of …
Fat And Queer: A Qualitative Exploration Of Womens' Experiences Of Fatphobia, Jaidelynn Keeley Rogers
Fat And Queer: A Qualitative Exploration Of Womens' Experiences Of Fatphobia, Jaidelynn Keeley Rogers
Dissertations
A paucity of psychological research exists on the topic of fatphobia, a type of pervasive oppression that occurs for people with plus-size, large, and/or fat bodies. Much of the research that exists about fatphobia focuses on medical ideals, the associated weight stigma, and how these are related to fat people’s physical health. Medical researchers have determined that weight stigma is actually more harmful to fat people's health than being fat. Fatphobia impacts women at disproportionate rates. Plus-sized, queer, lesbian, bisexual, and pansexual (LGBTQ+) women may be at a heightened risk for experiencing marinization as a result of their intersecting identities …
Comparing Various Staff Training Modalities Within Applied Behavior Analysis, Jason Joseph Starr
Comparing Various Staff Training Modalities Within Applied Behavior Analysis, Jason Joseph Starr
Theses
Behavioral skills training (BST) has continuously demonstrated to be an effective means of training others in new skills and techniques. A limitation of BST, however, is that it requires extensive time and a professional trainer. Currently, there is a lack of literature comparing BST to alternative and effective training methods that require less resources, such as written directions and video modeling. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine which training modality (i.e., behavior skills training, written directions, or video modeling) was most effective at increasing staff members' correct implementation of applied behavior analysis procedures, specifically forward chaining, shaping, …
Breaking Barriers: Exploring Women's Identities And Challenges Around Work Through Photos And Reports In Delhi Ncr, Sonal Vij
Research Papers
This paper explores the relationships between women and their work in India's Delhi National Capital Region. Using a journalistic ethnographic research approach, the study examines women's experiences from different socioeconomic backgrounds, professions, and castes. The research aims to understand the complex dynamics of female relationships at work, focusing on how women negotiate and resist patriarchal structures. The research uses participant observational techniques and involves spending time with the participants in their workplaces, observing their interactions, capturing them on camera, and conducting semi-structured interviews. The data is analyzed thematically to identify the patterns and themes that emerge from the participants' experiences. …

"So That We Can Save The Earth From Dying": Highlights From A Middle School Environmental Field Day, Kenton Sena, Jill Abney, Hannah Ruehl, Chris Barton
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Continued urbanization is likely to reduce human-nature experience, transforming human-dwelt spaces into increasingly artificial environments and removing humans from interaction with non-human living things and their ecosystems. In urban spaces, outdoor experiential educational activities can help students increase their familiarity with the outdoors and get their hands dirty. This case study reports on an environmental field day for middle school students from an urban Kentucky middle school. Students rotated through three activities (picking insects out of leaf packs, testing water quality, and planting trees), then completed a brief survey designed and administered by their faculty. Students rated the tree planting …

Voices From The Street: The Perception Of Crime, Disorder, And Police In Chicago Neighborhoods, Courtney Boyce
Research Papers
How do Chicago residents feel about police, crime, and disorder? Using qualitative interviews with 20 Chicago residents, this study examines the ways Chicago residents perceive and feel about police, crime, and disorder in their neighborhoods. The relationship between perceptions of police, crime, and disorder is compared to the way it is framed in the broken windows theory by Wilson and Kelling (1982). The first research question addresses how residents understand the relationship between police officers, policing, and crime in their Chicago neighborhoods. The second research question focuses on how residents understand the relationship between disorder, other neighborhood characteristics, and crime. …
2022 Survey Of Illinois Law: Family Law, Stephanie L. Tang
2022 Survey Of Illinois Law: Family Law, Stephanie L. Tang
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
In 2022, there were significant changes to both family law legislation and case law. Relevant legislative changes include allowing litigants to seek attorney’s fees to retain a lawyer, allowing for temporary relocation, and clarifying when a change in circumstances is “contemplated” for purposes of modifying child support. Illinois courts also adjudicated cases across all areas of family law. These areas ranged from expanding on prior case precedent in areas like property division and allocation of parental responsibilities to establishing new precedent in others, including COVID-19 restrictions and allocation of frozen embryos.

Essays On Risk Preferences, Altruism, And Life Events, Fitri Safira
Dissertations
In this applied microeconomics dissertation, we study the effect of religiosity and life events on risk preferences and how happiness affect altruism. We begin with the first chapter by examining the relationship between high-risk health behavior and religiosity. Religious beliefs can impact an individual's behavior, including their future health. The 2021 CDC analyses shows that sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are still common, with an estimated 1 in 5 people in the US having an STI, and 13% of persons in the US with age 12 years old and above consuming any illicit drugs. We estimate the effect of religiosity on …

The primary focus of this research was to determine if any link exists to pre-entry grade point average (GPA), science-based didactic dental hygiene course GPA, and graduation GPA and success on the National Board of Dental Examinations, Inc. (NBDHE).
Results were gathered through NBDHE score reports from Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s (SIUC) dental hygiene program as well as GPA and course grades from the SIUC Registrar’s office for graduates from the Class of 2012-2022. Pre-entry GPA, graduation GPA, and individual science-based didactic dental hygiene courses were evaluated by using the course grades “A, B, or C” as “pass” and “D …
Cultivating Community: Investigating Performances Of Community In Ecovillage Settlements, Alex Lockwood
Cultivating Community: Investigating Performances Of Community In Ecovillage Settlements, Alex Lockwood
Dissertations
This dissertation considers the subject of ecovillages, intentional ecologically-oriented sustainable communities developed in the U.S., and the different understandings of community involvement, structure, and challenges that members of these communities confront in their efforts at managing these time and labor-intensive settlements. Informed by the work of performance ethnographers and critical phenomenologists, I consider twelve interviews I conducted on-site and electronically with people living in ecovillage settlements. Taking these interviews and my own observations from on-site visits to two ecovillages as entry points, I conducted a phenomenological analysis informed by a critical phenomenological ethos of these accounts, highlighting five motifs that …

The study is grounded in the concept of “Start where the people are” (Nyswander, 1956) which suggests that effective health campaigns that promote prevention strategies to enhance the quality of life for those targeted must be rooted in the prevalent cultural practices and religious values of the receivers of the slogans, themes, and taglines. Health campaigns that superimpose the values of the outsiders promoted as universalized solutions have limited effectiveness.

Evaluating Educational Degree Options Within Radiologic Science Programs, Jennifer Walker
Evaluating Educational Degree Options Within Radiologic Science Programs, Jennifer Walker
Ed.D. Capstone Reports
Currently, with the declining number of students enrolling in four-year radiologic science programs, it is not only worrisome for the survival of these programs, but also a challenge to supply enough graduates to help fill the hospitals’ demands for more radiologic technologists. With the increase in radiology staffing shortages, especially since COVID-19, it is important that Radiologic Science programs not only produce high quality technologists, but also maintain a high level of student enrollment. The purpose of the study is to determine similarities and differences between two-year and four-year Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT)-accredited radiologic science …
Effects Of Matching Images Of Natural And Built Environments On Delay Discounting: A Systematic Replication Of Berry Et Al. (2014), Elizabeth Fillmore
Effects Of Matching Images Of Natural And Built Environments On Delay Discounting: A Systematic Replication Of Berry Et Al. (2014), Elizabeth Fillmore
Theses
Decision making is heavily influenced by the environment around us. Berry et al. (2014, 2015, 2019) showed that viewing images of natural environments during the delay discounting task resulted in lower impulsive choice, as compared to viewing images of built environments or geometric figures. Berry et al. proposed that attentional factors could explain this effect, however, recent attempts to reproduce Berry et al.’s findings in a different laboratory have been unsuccessful (Johnson 2017, 2018, 2019). The present study tested if manipulating the participants’ observing responses towards different types of images (natural, built, and no images) modulates the effect reported by …

Assessing The Generalizability Of Early Life Stress Effects On Aggression, Sophia Aaflaq, Jacob Nordman Dr.
2023
The project entitled Assessing the Generalizability of Early Life Stress Effects on Aggression aims to enhance our understanding of the intricacies of human aggression associated with childhood trauma. Early life stress is a reliable predictor of aggression in adults. Previous studies have used rodent models to establish a link between early life stress and aggression, but many of these studies employed stressors that are not commonly experienced by humans, such as foot shock. This project intends to focus on more human-relevant stressors like social isolation and social defeat that will provide a better understanding of the brain pathways of human …

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, And Justice In Water Dialogues: A Review And Conceptualization, Simone A. Williams, Susanna Eden, Sharon B. Megdal, Valerisa Joe-Gaddy
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
In the United States, the lack of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) in water governance and management has been identified as a serious problem that affects the validity of decisions. Because water governance and management institutions, processes, and practices at all scales involve dialogue, it is important to understand DEIJ in water dialogues. This paper reports on the results of a systematic literature survey that was undertaken to guide efforts by The University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center to improve diversity and inclusion in its engagement practices and outreach strategies. Three questions are explored: 1) How is DEIJ …

Abstract:
Nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) represent a group of non-physician, advanced-practice providers (APPs) within our healthcare system. Non-physician providers are part of an inter-disciplinary team, working alongside physicians and a variety of allied healthcare providers. The purpose of this paper is to take a closer look at these two professions (NP and PA), with a focus on Illinois providers and the legislative strategies that guide their roles and abilities to practice. Illinois is a region where APP practices are inequitably regulated. Their Nurse Practice Act outlines a broad scope of practice for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs). …

Rooms That Awaken Us: A Poetic Inquiry Of Multiple Selves, Rawda Harb
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
Using poetry as a research method, the author wrote for self-expression, self-discovery and self-healing during the pandemic. As she wrote, she realized that she is a different person in different settings with differ- ent people. Without intending to ever share this work, she then examines her multiple selves’ learning-teach- ing dance with life using literature by Aoki, Leggo, Dewey, Tajfel and others. She even discusses the notion of multiple selves in life with her young children and is fascinated by their artistic response.
