“They’Re Supportive, But. . .”: Female Graduate Students And Their Parents’ Reactions To Graduate Education, Rosalie S. Aldrich Oct 2009

“They’Re Supportive, But. . .”: Female Graduate Students And Their Parents’ Reactions To Graduate Education, Rosalie S. Aldrich

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

In 2001, there were approximately 1.9 million graduate students in American universities, and a majority of them were women. Graduate students are under a considerable amount of stress and strain, and parents can be a source of social support for their children; however, little research has been done regarding graduate students and the support they receive from their parents. The purpose of this study was to explore parents’ reactions to their daughters’ choice to pursue a graduate degree. Data were collected through open-ended interviews with 18 female graduate students. Results indicated that parents’ reactions to their daughter going to graduate …

Indecisiveness In Compensating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: Where Does Illinois Leave First Responders?, Nicholas B. Haynes Oct 2009

Indecisiveness In Compensating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: Where Does Illinois Leave First Responders?, Nicholas B. Haynes

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Workers’ Compensation is designed to promptly compensate employees injured in the course of employment. In the past forty years, most states have extended workers’ compensation recovery to employees who suffer from a mental injury resulting from their employment. In Illinois, however, employees seeking to recover for employment-related mental illnesses must overcome a higher evidentiary standard if they work as a first responder or a similar position where they are trained for, and exposed to, traumatic situations on a regular basis. Statutory language and case law interpreting the use of a higher evidentiary standard are unclear as to whether a first …

When What You Don’T Know Can Hurt You: Third Party Liability For Fraudulent Misrepresentation In Non-Commercial Settings After Doe V. Dilling, 888 N.E.2d 24 (Ill. 2008), Laura Barke Oct 2009

When What You Don’T Know Can Hurt You: Third Party Liability For Fraudulent Misrepresentation In Non-Commercial Settings After Doe V. Dilling, 888 N.E.2d 24 (Ill. 2008), Laura Barke

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Fraudulent misrepresentation actions most commonly arise in the commercial context. In Doe v. Dilling, however, the plaintiff attempted to expand the tort’s usage to an extremely personal context and hold the parents of her fiancée liable for fraudulently misrepresenting her fiancée’s HIV status. Although this Casenote agrees that the Illinois Supreme Court reached the correct result in denying the plaintiff’s claim, it argues that the court failed to provide a clear framework for future cases. Because this case is susceptible to misinterpretation and could potentially bar all claims for fraudulent misrepresentation within non-commercial settings, this Casenote sets forth a test …

Sexual And Reproductive Decisions And Experiences Of Women Living With Hiv/Aids In Abuja, Nigeria, Stella C. Iwuagwu Sep 2009

Sexual And Reproductive Decisions And Experiences Of Women Living With Hiv/Aids In Abuja, Nigeria, Stella C. Iwuagwu

Dissertations

Over 60% of those living with HIV/AIDS are women, the majority of them in their sexual and reproductive years (UNAIDS, 2006). With antiretroviral (ARV) drugs, most of them are living longer and healthier to engage in sexual and reproductive activities (WHO, 2006). This study explored the sexual and reproductive decisions and experiences of women living with HIV/AIDS (WLWHA) in Abuja, Nigeria. Only those who became pregnant and had a child after being diagnosed with HIV participated in the study.

The study was an interview based qualitative research. The design of the interview guide was informed by the PEN-3 Model (Airhihenbuwa, …

There Are Multiple Contributors To The Verbal Short-Term Memory Deficit In Children With Developmental Reading Disabilities., Michelle Y. Kibby Sep 2009

There Are Multiple Contributors To The Verbal Short-Term Memory Deficit In Children With Developmental Reading Disabilities., Michelle Y. Kibby

Publications

Prior research has put forth at least four possible contributors to the verbal short-term memory (VSTM) deficit in children with developmental reading disabilities (RD): poor phonological awareness that affects phonological coding into VSTM, a less effective phonological store, slow articulation rate, and fewer/poorer quality long-term memory (LTM) representations. This project is among the first to test the four suppositions in one study. Participants included 18 children with RD and 18 controls. VSTM was assessed using Baddeley's model of the phonological loop. Findings suggest all four suppositions are correct, depending upon the type of material utilized. Children with RD performed comparably …

Democracy By Design: The Institutionalization Of Community Participation Networks In Los Angeles, Christopher Weare Jun 2009

Democracy By Design: The Institutionalization Of Community Participation Networks In Los Angeles, Christopher Weare

Working Papers

The paper uses network theory to examine the institutionalization of community governance in Los Angeles. Since the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 mandated the created of neighborhood level bodies to foster “maximum feasible participation” in program development and implementation, we have witnessed rapid growth in local participative bodies. Their success in developing legitimacy and promoting government accountability, however, has been highly varied. Scholars have attributed this variation to a number of centralized design features (e.g. the degree of political support, the provision of organizational resources, the training for participants) and community characteristics (e.g. social capital, community capacity, SES). Others point …

The Political Discussion Networks Of Immigrants And Native Born Voters, Casey A. Klofstad, Benjamin G. Bishin Jun 2009

The Political Discussion Networks Of Immigrants And Native Born Voters, Casey A. Klofstad, Benjamin G. Bishin

Working Papers

Despite that fact that political discussion has become a more common topic of research in political science, and despite the fact that immigrants have begun to comprise a larger portion of the United States population, the content and effect of immigrant political discussion networks have not yet been examined. In this paper we examine whether engaging in political discussion is a means by which to encourage immigrants to participate in political activities. Our evidence shows that while immigrants are as likely as native born citizens to engage in political discussions, immigrants are less likely to share politically-relevant information during such …

An M-Star Model Of Dynamic, Endogenous Interdependence – A.K.A. Network-Behavior Coevolution – In The Social Sciences, Jude C. Hays, Aya Kachi, Robert J. Franzese Jun 2009

An M-Star Model Of Dynamic, Endogenous Interdependence – A.K.A. Network-Behavior Coevolution – In The Social Sciences, Jude C. Hays, Aya Kachi, Robert J. Franzese

Working Papers

Spatial interdependence, the interdependence of outcomes across units, is theoretically and substantively ubiquitous and central across the social sciences. The empirical clustering of outcomes on some dimension(s), spatial association, is also obvious in most contexts. However, outcomes may exhibit spatial association for three distinct reasons. Units may be responding similarly to similar exposure to similar exogenous internal/domestic or external/foreign stimuli (common exposure), and/or units’ responses may depend on others’ responses (contagion). A third possibility arises when the putative outcome affects the variable along which clustering occurs (selection: e.g., homophily). Severe empirical difficulties confront the accurate estimation and distinction of these …

Memory Functioning In Developmental Dyslexia: An Analysis Using Two Clinical Memory Measures., Michelle Y. Kibby May 2009

Memory Functioning In Developmental Dyslexia: An Analysis Using Two Clinical Memory Measures., Michelle Y. Kibby

Publications

The goals of this project were threefold: to determine the nature of the memory deficit in children/adolescents with dyslexia, to utilize clinical memory measures in this endeavor, and to determine the extent to which semantic short-term memory (STM) is related to basic reading performance. Two studies were conducted using different samples, one incorporating the Wide Range Assessment of Memory and Learning and the other incorporating the California Verbal Learning Test-Children's Version. Results suggest that phonological STM is deficient in children with dyslexia, but semantic STM and visual-spatial STM are intact. Long-term memory (LTM) for both visual and verbal material also …

The Relationship Between Cerebral Hemisphere Volume And Receptive Language Functioning In Dyslexia And Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd)., Michelle Y. Kibby, Shital P. Pavawalla, Jill B. Fancher, Angela J. Naillon, George W. Hynd

Publications

Because poor comprehension has been associated with small cerebral volume and there is a high comorbidity between developmental dyslexia, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and specific language impairment, the goal of this study was to determine whether cerebral volume is reduced in dyslexia and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in general, as some suggest, or whether the reduction in volume corresponds to poor receptive language functioning, regardless of the diagnosis. Participants included 46 children with and without dyslexia and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, aged 8 to 12 years. Our results indicated that cerebral volume was comparable between those with and without dyslexia and attention-deficit …

Bayesian Irt Models Incorporating General And Specific Abilities, Yanyan Sheng, Christopher K. Wikle Apr 2009

Bayesian Irt Models Incorporating General And Specific Abilities, Yanyan Sheng, Christopher K. Wikle

Publications

IRT-based models with a general ability and several specific ability dimensions are useful. Studies have looked at item response models where the general and specific ability dimensions form a hierarchical structure. It is also possible that the general and specific abilities directly underlie all test items. A multidimensional IRT model with such an additive structure is proposed under the Bayesian framework. Simulation studies were conducted to evaluate parameter recovery as well as model comparisons. A real data example is also provided. The results suggest that the proposed additive model offers a better way to represent the test situations not realized …

The Unexamined Life Is Not Worth Living . . . Or Is It? Preserving The Sanctity Of Human Life In American Courtrooms, Stephanie R. Fueger Mar 2009

The Unexamined Life Is Not Worth Living . . . Or Is It? Preserving The Sanctity Of Human Life In American Courtrooms, Stephanie R. Fueger

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

This Comment argues that the ways in which disparities between wrongful pregnancy and wrongful birth claims are handled by judges has set up a subconscious bias against those who are born with genetic, developmental or other defects. This article proposes that the current distinctions among such claims be abolished in favor of other alternatives that actually carry out the stated goals of the judges making these decisions: respect for all human life. To do so, judges must abolish the distinctions between wrongful life and wrongful pregnancy claims because they ignore the benefits disabled children bestow on their parents. These distinctions …

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

With the increasing usage of traditional medicines as complementary alternative therapy, possibilities that would ensure its successful integration into the public domain of health care services needs to be evaluated. India is one of the countries with rich traditional knowledge base. Its ethnic ethno-medical practices had paved way for the evolution of several indigenous systems of medicine. Siddha is one of the oldest systems of medicine in India. Siddha holds close association with nature and has been validated in the laboratory of life, even before the advent of formal modern western system of medicine. This paper discusses the interrelations between …

Social Networks And Correct Voting, Scott D. Mcclurg, Anand E. Sokhey Jan 2009

Social Networks And Correct Voting, Scott D. Mcclurg, Anand E. Sokhey

Working Papers

Decades of research suggest that social interaction influences opinion formation and affects voting behavior. However, recent work concerning the nexus between deliberation and democratic practice--particularly in the American context--has re-focused attention on the normative consequences of socially-driven political behavior. Among the most common criticisms of interpersonal networks are that most people have very insular social circles, and that when they do not they are unlikely to engage in politics. In this paper we provide evidence that such pessimistic assessments are unwarranted, though for somewhat unexpected reasons. Using data from the American Component of the 1992 Cross-National Election Project and the …
