Social Expertise And The Foundations Of Political Involvement, Scott D. Mcclurg Jan 2009

Social Expertise And The Foundations Of Political Involvement, Scott D. Mcclurg

Working Papers

The correlation between social ties and political participation has been evident for some time, though very little attention is devoted to examining the causal mechanisms producing this relationship. This paper moves the literature in this direction by examining how an important feature of social networks -- levels of political expertise -- affect the attitudes underlying involvement. After outlining a model for explaining the relationship between social expertise and involvement, analysis of the 2000 American National Election Study shows that people who are in sophisticated social networks are less likely to be ambivalent about candidates and more likely to feel efficacious. …

“He Would Kill Me With His Penis”: Genocidal Rape In Rwanda As A State Crime, Christopher W. Mullins Jan 2009

“He Would Kill Me With His Penis”: Genocidal Rape In Rwanda As A State Crime, Christopher W. Mullins

Articles

Only recently have critical criminologists begun a systematic exploration of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity as state crimes (Kramer and Michalowski 2005; Mullins and Rothe 2008; Haveman and Smeulers 2008). This paper contributes to that growing literature through examining the nature and dynamics of sexual violence as it occurred during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. It draws upon empirical examination of events depicted in transcripts of trials held before the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. It qualitatively examines the role of leaders in producing mass sexual assaults. It explores how sexual mutilations were more intense expressions of what the …

Toward A Criminology Of International Criminal Law: An Integrated Theory Of International Criminal Violations, Dawn L. Rothe, Christopher W. Mullins Jan 2009

Toward A Criminology Of International Criminal Law: An Integrated Theory Of International Criminal Violations, Dawn L. Rothe, Christopher W. Mullins

Articles

Violations of international criminal law (i.e., genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes) are a common occurrence around the globe. One need only to read international news, visit intra‐governmental (e.g., United Nations or the International Committee Red Cross), or nongovernmental organizations (e.g., Human Rights Watch or Amnesty International) to be exposed to the vast numbers of crimes of states, paramilitaries, and/or militias. Nonetheless, there has been relatively little attention paid to these types of offenses by criminologists. While there have been developments in creating typologies (Smeulers, 2008) and predictive models for genocide (Harf, 2005), due to the complexities and various …

Death Anxiety In A National Sample Of United States Funeral Directors And Its Relationship With Death Exposure, Age, And Sex, Laura K. Harrawood, Lyle J. White, John J. Benshoff Jan 2009

Death Anxiety In A National Sample Of United States Funeral Directors And Its Relationship With Death Exposure, Age, And Sex, Laura K. Harrawood, Lyle J. White, John J. Benshoff

Publications

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the level of death anxiety among a national sample of United States funeral directors with varying levels of death exposure, age, and sex. Utilizing the Multidimensional Fear of Death Scale (MFODS), the results showed a significant, but weak negative relationship between levels of death anxiety and the participants' reported number of funerals attended per year. The correlation between death anxiety scores and the number of reported embalming cases performed yearly was, however, not significant. We found a significant negative correlation between death anxiety and age in both men and …

Quantifying A Dynamic Risk Landscape: Heterogeneous Predator Activity And Implications For Prey Persistence, Eric M. Schauber, Matthew J. Connors, Brett J. Goodwin, Clive G. Jones, Richard S. Ostfeld Jan 2009

Quantifying A Dynamic Risk Landscape: Heterogeneous Predator Activity And Implications For Prey Persistence, Eric M. Schauber, Matthew J. Connors, Brett J. Goodwin, Clive G. Jones, Richard S. Ostfeld

Publications

Spatial heterogeneity in predation risk can ameliorate impacts on prey populations, particularly for prey of generalists. Spatially heterogeneous risk implies the existence of refugia, and the spatial scale of those refugia and their persistence over time affect whether prey can avoid predation by aggregating therein. Our objective was to quantify the magnitude, spatial scale, and temporal persistence of heterogeneity in risk of predation by white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus), an abundant generalist predator of gypsy moths (Lymantria dispar) and songbirds. We used track plates to measure white-footed mouse activity at .170 trees in each of three forest plots in …

Gibbs Sampling For 2pno Multi-Unidimensional Item Response Theory Models (Fortran), Yanyan Sheng, Todd C. Headrick

Publications

A Fortran 77 subroutine is provided for implementing the Gibbs sampling procedure to a multiunidimensional IRT model for binary item response data with the choice of uniform and normal prior distributions for item parameters. In addition to posterior estimates of the model parameters and their Monte Carlo standard errors, the algorithm also estimates the correlations between distinct latent traits. The subroutine requires the user to have access to the IMSL library.

The Coevolution Of Networks And Political Attitudes, David Lazer, Brian Rubineau, Carol Chetkovich, Nancy Katz, Michael Neblo Jan 2009

The Coevolution Of Networks And Political Attitudes, David Lazer, Brian Rubineau, Carol Chetkovich, Nancy Katz, Michael Neblo

Working Papers

How do attitudes and social affiliations co-evolve? A long stream of research has focused on the relationship between attitudes and social affiliations. However, in most of this research the causal relationship between views and affiliations is difficult to discern definitively: Do people influence each other’s views so that they converge over time or do they primarily affiliate (by choice or happenstance) with those of similar views? Here we use longitudinal attitudinal and whole network data collected at critical times (notably, at the inception of the system) to identify robustly the determinants of attitudes and affiliations. We find significant conformity tendencies: …

The Lasting Effect Of Civic Talk On Civic Participation: Evidence From A Panel Study, Casey A. Klofstad Jan 2009

The Lasting Effect Of Civic Talk On Civic Participation: Evidence From A Panel Study, Casey A. Klofstad

Working Papers

Extant research shows that individuals who discuss politics and current events with their peers also participate more actively in civil society. However, this correlation is not sufficient evidence of causation due to a number of analytical biases. To address this problem, data were collected through a panel study conducted on students at a large public university in the Midwestern United States. These data show that discussing politics and current events caused these students to participate in civic activities during their first year of college. A follow-up study conducted on the same population during their fourth year of college shows that …

Healing The Rift? Social Networks And Reconciliation Between Obama And Clinton Delegates In 2008, Michael Heaney, Seth Masket, Joanne Miller, Dara Strolovich Jan 2009

Healing The Rift? Social Networks And Reconciliation Between Obama And Clinton Delegates In 2008, Michael Heaney, Seth Masket, Joanne Miller, Dara Strolovich

Working Papers

Which factors allowed the Democratic Party to heal the rift created by the 2008 presidential nominating campaign? Using original data from surveys of 449 pledged delegates at the 2008 Democratic National Convention, this research examines the conditions under which the delegates for one candidate embrace the opposing candidate. Specifically, when do delegates for Barack Obama embrace Hillary Clinton, and vice versa? The results demonstrate that Clinton delegates’ network centrality in the convention caucus network exacerbates, rather than heals, the rift in the party. Clinton delegates’ friendship networks perpetuate the rift when they are homophilous, but contribute to healing when they …

Living In A Battleground: Presidential Campaigns And Fundamental Predictors Of Vote Choice, Scott D. Mcclurg, Thomas M. Holbrook Jan 2009

Living In A Battleground: Presidential Campaigns And Fundamental Predictors Of Vote Choice, Scott D. Mcclurg, Thomas M. Holbrook

Publications

Little evidence links the strategic decisions of campaigns to individual-level voting behavior. Yet for campaigns to matter in the way that experts argue, exposure to campaigns must also matter so there should be observable differences in the structure of vote choice between battleground and non-battleground states. Combining presidential campaign data with the Senate Election Study, we show that intense campaigning can activate factors like race, ideology, partisanship, and presidential approval. We find that the campaigns affected different variables in 1988 than in 1992, which we hypothesize is the consequence of campaign messages.

Relationships Among Leader-Member Exchange, Organizational Citizenship Behavior, Organizational Commitment, Gender, And Dyadic Duration In A Rehabilitation Organization, James Louis Soldner Jan 2009

Relationships Among Leader-Member Exchange, Organizational Citizenship Behavior, Organizational Commitment, Gender, And Dyadic Duration In A Rehabilitation Organization, James Louis Soldner

Dissertations

This study was an investigation of the relationship between subordinates' perceptions of the quality of the leader-member exchange (LMX) relationship and their willingness to engage in organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and organizational commitment (OC). Differences in subordinates' perceptions of the quality of the LMX with their supervisor according to the gender of the supervisor compared to the employee (same sex vs. different sex) and dyadic duration of the LMX were also investigated. The possible moderation of dyadic duration on the relationship between subordinates' perception of the quality of the LMX and their willingness to engage in OCB and OC were …

Reading Skill Integration In High School Business Courses: Perceptions Of Business Teacher Educators In The United States, Frederick William Polkinghorne

Dissertations

The problem of this research was to determine (a) perceptions of business teacher educators regarding the nature of integrated reading skill instruction in high school business courses, (b) the professional development background of business teacher educators for integrated reading skill instruction, and (c) the influence of selected variables on business teacher educators' perceptions of reading skill integration in high school business courses. The study population included 188 business teacher educators in 36 states. Data were gathered through the use of a survey instrument that was validated by a panel of experts and pilot tested. Conclusions state that business teacher educators …

Generating Sustainable Weight Loss: Investigating The Efficacy Of A Behavioral Based Weight Loss Intervention, Michael James Bordieri Jan 2009

Generating Sustainable Weight Loss: Investigating The Efficacy Of A Behavioral Based Weight Loss Intervention, Michael James Bordieri

Theses

Two thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. Traditional obesity interventions (e.g. drug therapy, diets, behavior therapy) generate moderate short-term weight loss but have little evidence of long-term weight maintenance. The cultural phenomenon of "yo-yo dieting" mirrors empirical findings which suggest that weight loss, albeit demanding, is a far easier process to target than weight maintenance. The present study sought to evaluate the efficacy of an acceptance based behavioral intervention designed to generate improvements in psychological health and quality of life in obese and overweight adults as well as encourage gradual and sustainable weight loss. The therapy package combined the …

Revitalization Of Siddha Medicine In Tamilnadu, India - Changing Trends In Consumer’S Attitude: A Survey, A. Krishnan Et Al.

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Socioeconomic characteristics have significant impact on consumer’s attitude towards the usage of traditional system of medicine. Though traditional systems of medicine have made significant contributions towards fulfilling healthcare needs of the people in the past, impacts of modern medicine have been so large that traditional medicine witnessed a dark period in southern part of India. While such practices are common in the rural/ remote areas, of late, change in the trend with respect to the usage of Siddha medicine as complementary alternative therapy among urban population has been observed. Present study aims to evaluate the resurgence of interest in Siddha …

The Prospects For Cyberocracy (Revisited), David Ronfeldt, Danielle Varda Dec 2008

The Prospects For Cyberocracy (Revisited), David Ronfeldt, Danielle Varda

Working Papers

The deepening of the information age will alter the nature of the state so thoroughly that something new emerges: "cyberocracy." While it is too early to say precisely what a cyberocracy will look like, the outcomes will include new kinds of democratic, totalitarian, and hybrid governments, along with new kinds of state-society relations. Thus, optimism about the information revolution should be tempered by an anticipation of its potential dark side. This paper reiterates the view of the cyberocracy concept as first stated in 1992, and then offers a postscript for 2008. It speculates that information-age societies will develop new sensory …

A Matlab Package For Markov Chain Monte Carlo With A Multi-Unidimensional Irt Model, Yanyan Sheng Nov 2008

A Matlab Package For Markov Chain Monte Carlo With A Multi-Unidimensional Irt Model, Yanyan Sheng

Publications

Unidimensional item response theory (IRT) models are useful when each item is designed to measure some facet of a unified latent trait. In practical applications, items are not necessarily measuring the same underlying trait, and hence the more general multi-unidimensional model should be considered. This paper provides the requisite information and description of software that implements the Gibbs sampler for such models with two item parameters and a normal ogive form. The software developed is written in the MATLAB package IRTmu2no. The package is flexible enough to allow a user the choice to simulate binary response data with multiple dimensions, …

Memory Functioning In Children With Reading Disabilities And/Or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Clinical Investigation Of Their Working Memory And Long-Term Memory Functioning., Michelle Y. Kibby, Morris J. Cohen Nov 2008

Memory Functioning In Children With Reading Disabilities And/Or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Clinical Investigation Of Their Working Memory And Long-Term Memory Functioning., Michelle Y. Kibby, Morris J. Cohen

Publications

We examined memory functioning in children with reading disabilities (RD), Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and RD/ADHD using a clinic sample with a clinical instrument: the Children's Memory Scale, enhancing its generalizability. Participants included 23 children with RD, 30 with ADHD, 30 with RD/ADHD, and 30 controls. Children with RD presented with reduced verbal short-term memory (STM) but intact visual STM, central executive (CE), and long-term memory (LTM) functioning. Their deficit in STM appeared specific to tasks requiring phonetic coding of material. Children with ADHD displayed intact CE and LTM functioning but reduced visual-spatial STM, especially when off stimulant medication. Children …

A Critical Appraisal Of Contemporary Aproaches In The Quantitative Analysis Of Behavior, J Moore Oct 2008

A Critical Appraisal Of Contemporary Aproaches In The Quantitative Analysis Of Behavior, J Moore

The Psychological Record

For over 40 years, much research has sought to mathematically describe the relation between operant choice responding and reinforcement. This quantitatively oriented research and the accompanying theoretical interpretation of the data are embedded in the broader context of general experimental psychology, which can at times be regrettably mentalistic. Researchers and theorists in the area of the quantitative analysis of behavior may therefore need to be sensitive to mentalistic influences arising from outside the experimental analysis of behavior. One possible mentalistic influence is the psychophysics of S. S. Stevens. A second is the use of “value” as an intervening, mediating organismic …
