Parallel Computing With A Bayesian Item Response Model, Kyriakos Patsias, Mona Rahimi, Yanyan Sheng, Shahram Rahimi
Parallel Computing With A Bayesian Item Response Model, Kyriakos Patsias, Mona Rahimi, Yanyan Sheng, Shahram Rahimi
Publications
Item response theory (IRT) is a modern test theory that has been used in various aspects of educational and psychological measurement. The fully Bayesian approach shows promise for estimating IRT models. Given that it is computationally expensive, the procedure is limited in practical applications. It is hence important to seek ways to reduce the execution time. A suitable solution is the use of high performance computing. This study focuses on the fully Bayesian algorithm for a conventional IRT model so that it can be implemented on a high performance parallel machine. Empirical results suggest that this parallel version of the …

Perceived Risk Of Homeland Security Incidents: The Insignificance Of Actual Risk Factors, Melissa R. Haynes
Perceived Risk Of Homeland Security Incidents: The Insignificance Of Actual Risk Factors, Melissa R. Haynes
Theses
Contingency theory, with regard to risk of homeland security incidents and homeland security preparedness, has received considerable empirical support. In past research, risk has been measured subjectively as agency executives' perceived risk of specific homeland security incidents occurring within their jurisdictions. This study examines actual risk, using the objective risk factors of experience with past natural hazards, social vulnerability, and urbanization. These risk factors, used in combination, have been significantly associated with terrorism-related homeland security incidents in the United States, and are used in risk assessment models of natural hazards. Contrary to expectations, the results of this study indicate that …
Giving Students The Reins: Taking Advantage Of Service-Learning's Potential As A Pedagogy For Teaching Writing, Tereza Joy Kramer
Giving Students The Reins: Taking Advantage Of Service-Learning's Potential As A Pedagogy For Teaching Writing, Tereza Joy Kramer
Dissertations
Service-learning helps students experience the practical applications of learning to write well; it also offers opportunities for students to develop a sense of civic responsibility. Although service-learning is growing in popularity, this pedagogy is not prevalent in English departments. Additionally, service-learning courses across all disciplines typically do not empower students to make their own project decisions. Given these tendencies, it is useful to consider whether service-learning is an effective pedagogy for writing, whether students should be designing their own projects, and what writing instructors could do to facilitate students' growth as writers while completing projects in the community. This is …
You Can Breastfeed But . . . : A Rhetorical Analysis Of Images And Commentary On Breastfeeding, Jonna Ziniel
You Can Breastfeed But . . . : A Rhetorical Analysis Of Images And Commentary On Breastfeeding, Jonna Ziniel
Dissertations
This dissertation is a study of breastfeeding images and the commentary about those images, from a rhetorical perspective. Specifically, I use a feminist lens in order to analyze images of breastfeeding in both magazine and online environments, as well as online commentary about the images. I examine both celebrity and non-celebrity images of breastfeeding from popular pregnancy and parenting magazines, non-traditional parenting magazines, company web sites, and online articles and blog sites. Chapter one presents a statement of purpose, research questions, and an examination of the current literature pertinent to the study including sections on breastfeeding benefits, the sexualized woman's …
The Military, Economy And The State: A New International System Analysis, Muhammed A. Asadi
The Military, Economy And The State: A New International System Analysis, Muhammed A. Asadi
Dissertations
In this dissertation, I outline a theoretical justification for a new world systems analysis in order to understand economic development and underdevelopment, and stratification systems that emerge within nation states because of their global social location. I present my detailed case for amending Wallerstein's World-Systems Analysis by empirically incorporating the interplay of the military, economy and state as opposed to his primarily economic division of labor that defines the core, periphery and semi periphery. I do this by uncovering the latent structure of militarization and its articulation within the world system controlling for state strength. I also outline the basic …

Factors Influencing Post-Acute Brain Injury Rehabilitation Treatment Outcome, Nicholas Joseph Cioe
Factors Influencing Post-Acute Brain Injury Rehabilitation Treatment Outcome, Nicholas Joseph Cioe
Dissertations
Brain injury has a tremendous effect on the United States. The medical system has a continuum of care available but many of these services are extremely expensive. Despite the effectiveness of residential post-acute brain injury rehabilitation (PABIR) resistance to provide adequate funding remains because of a dearth of randomized controlled trial (RCT) studies demonstrating effectiveness. Some research suggests observational trials are typically more representative of community samples and yield conclusions similar to RCT studies. This study uses a large multi-state naturalistic community-based sample of individuals who received residential PABIR. The purposes of this study were to (1) use logistic regression …
Attitudes Of Teaching Faculty Toward Inclusive Teaching Strategies At A Midwestern University, Bryan Dallas
Attitudes Of Teaching Faculty Toward Inclusive Teaching Strategies At A Midwestern University, Bryan Dallas
Dissertations
This study measured postsecondary faculty attitudes toward academic accommodations and an inclusive teaching method called Universal Design for Instruction (UDI). The purpose of the study was to help determine a readiness for change among faculty with regard to implementing UDI principles, compare differences between faculty groups, as well as add to the postsecondary UDI research agenda. UDI requires faculty instructional design and has the potential to reduce the need for individualized academic accommodations and increase the retention and graduation rates of students with disabilities. The study included an online survey e-mailed to 1,621 faculty at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). …
Family Attitudes, Beliefs, And Practices Facilitating A Sense Of Purpose In Black American Children And Youth: A Grounded Theory, Mallory Lynn Gary
Family Attitudes, Beliefs, And Practices Facilitating A Sense Of Purpose In Black American Children And Youth: A Grounded Theory, Mallory Lynn Gary
Dissertations
i ABSTRACT Sense of purpose is strongly associated with positive health behaviors and academic achievement (Turner-Musa & Lipscomb, 2007, Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics FIFCFS, 2010). The purpose of this qualitative research study was to develop grounded theory by the exploration of sense of purpose by describing and interpreting attitudes, beliefs, and practices among Black American families participating in an outreach program in Southern, IL. Grounded theory was used to explain the phenomenon of sense of purpose, and the relationship among optimism, faith, hope, spirituality and sense of meaning. A non probability purposive sample was used for …

SEARCHING FOR A FATHER explores the lives of two African American men who grew up in broken homes. This documentary will emphasize that time is critically important from childhood to adulthood by profiling two African Americans around the very pressing themes of why African American fathers leave home. This film will allow the two African American men to discuss their lives in whatever way they see fit to explain and share their stories about their fathers and the role models that they found to replace their father figures

Within-Session Changes In Response Rate: Implications For Behavioral Pharmacology, John M. Roll, Frances K. Mcsweeney
Within-Session Changes In Response Rate: Implications For Behavioral Pharmacology, John M. Roll, Frances K. Mcsweeney
The Psychological Record
An assumption inherent in the theory and practice of operant psychology is that response rate is relatively invariant during steady-state procedures. Recent research has refuted this assumption, demonstrating instead that response rate changes in a large and systematic fashion during many steady-state operant procedures. This finding mandates that operant researchers take into account these within-session changes in response rate when designing and conducting research. Because behavioral pharmacologists use operant techniques and principles, these within-session changes in response rate must be taken into account when conducting behavioral pharmacological research as well. This paper briefly reviews what is known about within-session response …

Treatment For Persons With Heroin Addiction, Angie K. Mcduffie
Treatment For Persons With Heroin Addiction, Angie K. Mcduffie
Research Papers
Heroin addiction is devastating to both the person addicted and to society. Attempts to treat heroin addiction have proved difficult due to the extreme addictive qualities of the drug. Medication-assisted recovery or pharmacotherapy, such as methadone and buprenorphine, are controversial in that it is providing a medication that has similar qualities of heroin itself. Behavioral treatments alone have limited success due to many factors. The literature presented will provide a look at heroin and heroin addiction, as well as a comprehensive study of outpatient treatments that are currently being used. The purpose of this study is to determine the most …
Switching Focus Of Attention Mid-Trial And Its Effect On Stability During A Balance Task, William P. Westphal
Switching Focus Of Attention Mid-Trial And Its Effect On Stability During A Balance Task, William P. Westphal
Research Papers
For more than a decade focus of attention studies have shown an external focus is superior for performance compared to an internal focus of attention. The constrained action hypothesis suggests this occurs because an external focus of attention allows movement to happen more autonomously compared to an internal focus of attention. The purpose of the current experiment was to investigate if the benefit of an external focus of attention would still exist when participants were asked to change their focus of attention mid-trial. Based on the constrained action hypothesis and the findings of previous research it was hypothesized that participants’ …

Extensive literature has focused on the media influences on the body images of women. This is a quantitative study that examines the relationship between the impact that media has had on women and their body image as adolescents, as well as their current relationship with the media and their body image. It also examines if women feel that the media accurately portrays women in magazines and TV shows, and if they are influenced by the images in following them and changing their lifestyles to look like them. One hundred and fifty-one women studying at a university were surveyed over the …
