Measuring Mutual Dependence Between State Repressive Actions, Christopher J. Fariss, Keith E. Schnakenberg
Measuring Mutual Dependence Between State Repressive Actions, Christopher J. Fariss, Keith E. Schnakenberg
Working Papers
This study explores the relationships between state violations of different human rights. Though most quantitative studies in international relations treat different types of repressive behaviors as either independent or arising from the same underlying process, significant insights are gained by conceptualizing different human rights violations as separate but dependent processes. We present a theoretical framework for conceptualizing the mechanisms relating human rights practices and produce a novel measurement strategy based on network analysis for exploring these relationships. We illustrate high levels of complementarity between most human rights practices. Substitution effects, in contrast, are occasionally substantial but relatively rare. Finally, using …

Home And Identity: Displacement, Belonging, And Hybridity In International Students On U.S. Campuses, Jana Simonis
Research Papers
International students, through a process of cross-cultural adaptation and acculturation, create a hybridized identity that helps them in their negotiation between different cultural membership roles. Hybrid cultural identity roles were detected in the participants to varying degrees, depending on age, the intention with which the student came to the United States, the exposure to American culture, and the social ties formed during the intercultural experience. Hybridization can pose potential struggles for the students which include, but are not limited to, identity confusion, displacement, and not knowing where one belongs. Social support systems, consisting of other international students, co-nationals, U.S. - …
Integration Of Technology Into The Classroom: Effects On Reading Comprehension, Susan C. Stearns
Integration Of Technology Into The Classroom: Effects On Reading Comprehension, Susan C. Stearns
Research Papers
Reading comprehension is critical to understanding written communication. Even when students are able to recognize words and fluently read text, they my not comprehend what is read. Learning to comprehend text is critical for students to be successful in school and future careers. As new technologies emerge, there is a push to integrate technology into the classroom to promote academic success among students. Furthermore, the No Child Left Behind Act mandates the use of technology in the classroom. This research review investigated peer-reviewed studies comparing the effects of computer technology as a supplemental tool to support and improve the reading …

Follow The Yellow Chip Road: The Path To Legalizing Internet Poker, Josh Chumbley
Follow The Yellow Chip Road: The Path To Legalizing Internet Poker, Josh Chumbley
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
This Comment examines the current state of internet poker legislation and where it is headed in the future. First, the Comment provides the legal background behind internet poker legislation. Then, it examines recent and current attempts by legislators to legalize internet poker. Finally, it analyzes the steps that legislators should take to increase the chance of passing internet poker legislation. These steps include conducting an informational survey, narrowing the scope of the legislation, and minimizing the effect on states that may occur from switching from a state-controlled empire to a federally-regulated regime.
The Psychotherapist-Patient Privilege As An “Occasional Instrument Of Injustice”: An Argument For A Criminal Threat Exception, Joi T. Montiel
The Psychotherapist-Patient Privilege As An “Occasional Instrument Of Injustice”: An Argument For A Criminal Threat Exception, Joi T. Montiel
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
The Supreme Court in Jaffee v. Redmond announced a federal testimonial privilege protecting communications between a psychotherapist and his patient in federal court. However, in Footnote 19 of the opinion, the Court noted that there may be times where the privilege must “give way,” such as when “disclosure” of the statements made in therapy is necessary to protect an intended victim of the patient.
Nonetheless, commentators have argued against an exception to the privilege when the statements made to the therapist indicate that a target is in danger, and some courts have rejected such a “dangerous patient exception” to the …

Is Coefficient Alpha Robust To Non-Normal Data?, Yanyan Sheng, Zhaohui Sheng
Is Coefficient Alpha Robust To Non-Normal Data?, Yanyan Sheng, Zhaohui Sheng
Publications
Coefficient alpha has been a widely used measure by which internal consistency reliability is assessed. In addition to essential tau-equivalence and uncorrelated errors, normality has been noted as another important assumption for alpha. Earlier work on evaluating this assumption considered either exclusively nonnormal error score distributions, or limited conditions. In view of this and the availability of advanced methods for generating univariate nonnormal data, Monte Carlo simulations were conducted to show that nonnormal distributions for true or error scores do create problems for using alpha to estimate the internal consistency reliability. The sample coefficient alpha is affected by leptokurtic true …
Leveraging Generational Diversity In Today’S Workplace, Matthew Legas, Cynthia Howard Sims
Leveraging Generational Diversity In Today’S Workplace, Matthew Legas, Cynthia Howard Sims
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
Generational diversity has been noted as an obstacle for many U.S. organizations, yet there is a lack of understanding of how to leverage generational diversity in the workplace. This unawareness could be disastrous for companies wanting to increase economic wealth through human capital. The purpose of this paper is to identify the dilemma that exists when multiple generations coexist in the workplace and identify strategies that promote efficiency and improve employee communication and morale. The authors recommend developing new and innovative diversity training and incorporating an intergenerational mentoring program.
A Gibbs Sampler For The Multidimensional Item Response Model, Yanyan Sheng, Todd C. Headrick
A Gibbs Sampler For The Multidimensional Item Response Model, Yanyan Sheng, Todd C. Headrick
Publications
Current procedures for estimating compensatory multidimensional item response theory MIRT models using Markov chain Monte Carlo MCMC techniques are inadequate in that they do not directly model the interrelationship between latent traits. This limits the implementation of the model in various applications and further prevents the development of other types of IRT models that offer advantages not realized in existing models. In view of this, an MCMC algorithm is proposed for MIRT models so that the actual latent structure is directly modeled. It is demonstrated that the algorithm performs well in modeling parameters as well as intertrait correlations and that …
Application Of Focal Conflict Theory To Psychoeducational Groups: Implications For Process, Content, And Leadership, Julia Champe, Deborah J. Rubel
Application Of Focal Conflict Theory To Psychoeducational Groups: Implications For Process, Content, And Leadership, Julia Champe, Deborah J. Rubel
Publications
Group psychoeducation is a common group type used for a range of purposes. The literature presents balancing content and process as a challenge for psychoeducational group leaders. While the significance of group psychoeducation is supported, practitioners are given little direction for addressing process in these groups. Focal Conflict Theory (FCT) is a model for conceptualizing and intervening in group process that has been applied to therapy and work groups. This article presents the challenges of psychoeducational groups, describes FCT, and discusses its application to psychoeducational groups using case examples. Implications for leaders of psychoeducation groups are discussed.

Day Programming For Aging Adults With Intellectual Disabilities: A Review Of What Is And What Should Be, Kelly E. Norris Evans
Research Papers
The life expectancy of individuals with intellectual disabilities has risen with the improvement of medical technology and improved access to health care, which has resulted in a new need to provide supports to these individuals in their later years. Presently there is no clear model on how to provide these services to this growing population. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine differences in nursing home and Intellectual Disability services in an effort to determine suggestions on best practices for programming for aging adults that have intellectual disabilities.

On The Frontline Of Literacy: Risk And Reward As The Battle Rages On, Rick F. Stapel
On The Frontline Of Literacy: Risk And Reward As The Battle Rages On, Rick F. Stapel
Research Papers
This paper advocates for assignments that are “high risk” in order to promote a less than predictable classroom environment. This paper attempts to create a space specific to first-year teachers of Freshman Composition and specifically for first-year teachers of Freshman Composition. Sample assignments are couched inside of a personal narrative of failure, as first first-year teachers of Freshman Composition are encouraged to explore the relationship between risk and reward, between pedagogical approach and classroom practice.
Domestic Violence Advocacy In The Rural Context And Discourses Of Gender And Sexuality Related To Domestic Violence Victims And Perpetrators, Sarah Pitcher
Research Papers
This project explores domestic violence advocacy in a rural setting, using a critical feminist-informed social constructionist approach. Analysis considers how the rural context specifically affects advocacy work, victims’ experiences, and perceptions of domestic violence victims and ultimately aims to give voice to the experiences of advocates and domestic violence victims located within the cultural and social context of a rural area. Analysis also focuses on discourses that arise within the interviews related to gender and sexuality, most often surrounding the victims but also related to abusers. Results indicate that the rural context affects advocacy and the experiences of domestic violence …

What Liaisons Say About Themselves And What Faculty Say About Their Liaisons, A U.S. Survey, Julie Arendt, Megan Lotts
Articles
Liaison librarians and faculty in chemistry, English, and psychology departments at colleges and universities in the United States were surveyed. They answered questions about services provided by the liaison and satisfaction. Liaisons’ satisfaction with their performance was associated with active liaison service, such as recent contact with the department and more time spent on liaison work. Faculty satisfaction with liaisons was associated with contact with their liaisons. We did not find associations between liaisons’ descriptions of their work and faculty satisfaction with their liaisons for the pairs of faculty and their liaisons we were able to match.
