Anterior Hypothalamic Stimulation Decreases Serum Immunoglobulin G Concentrations, Paul L. Lambert, Ernest H. Harrell, Kimberly Kelly
Anterior Hypothalamic Stimulation Decreases Serum Immunoglobulin G Concentrations, Paul L. Lambert, Ernest H. Harrell, Kimberly Kelly
The Psychological Record
Neuroimmunological research has indicated that hypothalamic structures play an important role in the modulation of immunoresponsivity. We report that electrical stimulation of the anterior hypothalamus decreases the concentration of Immunoglobulin G (lgG) in rat serum. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to either an anterior or dummy electrode group. Following the determination of baseline IgG concentrations animals were placed in an operant chamber where electrical stimulation was delivered to animals in the anterior group. Animals in the dummy electrode group were placed in an operant chamber but received no brain stimulation through the attached cable. IgG concentrations were determined for …

Motivation In Foreign Language Learning Settings: The Case Of Arabic In The Usa, Abdelmohssen Bouteldjoune
Motivation In Foreign Language Learning Settings: The Case Of Arabic In The Usa, Abdelmohssen Bouteldjoune
Theses
The term motivation has been the key for several research studies in language learning since Gardner and Lambert (1972) introduced the term to the field; however, the term did not go beyond the two types instrumental and integrative. Several studies were built over these terms, but none of them has explicitly investigated the motivation for learning Arabic language as a foreign language in the USA. Arabic is one of the languages where motivation for learning in the USA is increasing, thus came this study to investigate the reasons and orientations i.e. initial motivation for learning Arabic and if the materials …
The Impact Of Background Knowledge And Time Constraint On Reading Comprehension Of Vietnamese Learners Of English As A Second Language, Trang Thi Thuy Nguyen
The Impact Of Background Knowledge And Time Constraint On Reading Comprehension Of Vietnamese Learners Of English As A Second Language, Trang Thi Thuy Nguyen
Theses
Reading in a second language is an interesting area of research because the factors affecting reading have brought about much controversy in related theory and research. Particularly, schema theory has raised long-term debate about whether background knowledge facilitates or impedes reading comprehension. In recognition of such issue, the current research was conducted to examine the impact of background knowledge on second language reading comprehension. Additionally, the impact of time constraint on reading comprehension was also investigated. Thirty-one students of intermediate level of English in Le Quy Don high school, Vietnam took part in the study. Four cloze texts, two of …
Narratives Of Abuse: A Glimpse Into The Lives Of Battered Women And The Making Of The Film, In The Eyes Of Others, Elisa Herrmann
Narratives Of Abuse: A Glimpse Into The Lives Of Battered Women And The Making Of The Film, In The Eyes Of Others, Elisa Herrmann
Theses
The thesis film In the Eyes of Others is the result of three-years of research on viewers' fascination with horror films, Brazil televisions' seeming non-stop broadcast of news about crimes of passion, and my study of the link between crimes of passion and domestic violence. The film tells the story of Amanda and Jack, a battered woman and her abusive husband, who, in the eyes of others, seem like the perfect couple. By showing one of the possible tragic outcomes of a life where violence against women is hidden from the eyes of society, my goal with In the Eyes …
Beyond Materiality In Animation: Sensuous Perception And Touch In The Tactile Existence Of "Would A Heart Die?", Ellen C. Rocha Souza
Beyond Materiality In Animation: Sensuous Perception And Touch In The Tactile Existence Of "Would A Heart Die?", Ellen C. Rocha Souza
Research Papers
This research focuses on the tangibility three-dimensional stop-motion animation allows in its authorial process, and on the tactility and materiality it evokes on the other side of the screen. Based on these assumptions, I seek to demonstrate how the sense of touch is evoked by the tactility of materials used in three-dimensional stop-motion animation, by drawing on the concepts of fabrication (Wells, 1998), haptic visuality (Marks, 2002), tactile image (Barker, 2009), and on the embodied viewer’s experience as defined by Vivian Sobchack (1992; 2004). This work is also directed to the application of theories to an empirical experience on materiality …

Motivation And Attitudes Toward Learning French In The University's Foreign Language Classroom, Brianna Johnson
Motivation And Attitudes Toward Learning French In The University's Foreign Language Classroom, Brianna Johnson
Theses
In second language research and pedagogy, motivation has been labeled as a key factor for success (Clément, 1980; Dörnyei, 1998; Tremblay & Gardner, 1995; Deci & Ryan, 1985); namely, language learners with high levels of motivation will be more successful than those who exhibit more negative attitudes towards learning the TL. Through classroom observations, student survey responses and personal interviews conducted in a beginner-level university French class, this study attempted to determine broad motivational patterns using Gardner's (1982) binary integrative and instrumental model, and then determine specific origins for these motivations. Four interviewees were selected: two with high instrumental and …
Election To Cancún: A Comparative Rhetorical Criticism Of President Barack Obama's Speeches On Climate Change, Kevin J. Calderwood
Election To Cancún: A Comparative Rhetorical Criticism Of President Barack Obama's Speeches On Climate Change, Kevin J. Calderwood
Research Papers
This research paper explores the environmental rhetoric of President Barack Obama’s speeches on climate change, from the time of his election in 2008 until his conspicuous absence at the Cancún climate change talks in December 2010. Climate change is an issue of societal importance because of its negative effects on the environment and the economy. It is also important to the field of communication studies because an efficacious climate change accord relies on the ability to convince other countries of the importance of this issue. Scholars have conducted little work on climate change and the American presidency, which is a …
Making The Political Personal: Investigating The Relationship Between Feminist Beliefs And Sexual Assertiveness, Kate Miller Hagadone
Making The Political Personal: Investigating The Relationship Between Feminist Beliefs And Sexual Assertiveness, Kate Miller Hagadone
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between identification with feminist beliefs and sexual assertiveness, by examining three potential mediators of that relationship: self-objectification, empowered entitlement, and self-silencing. Cross-sectional survey data were collected via online survey from 188 women. Results from correlational analyses indicated that active commitment to feminist beliefs was significantly related to lower levels of self-objectification and self-silencing and higher levels of empowered entitlement, but was not related to sexual assertiveness. Identification with nonfeminist beliefs (passive acceptance of sexism) was significantly related to higher levels of self-objectification and self-silencing and decreased empowered entitlement, as well …

Examining The Relationship Between Supervisory Styles And Counselor Skill And Personal Development Perceived By The Supervisee, Bruce Michael Meissner
Dissertations
This study replicates the Fernando and Hulse-Killacky (2005) study of supervisory styles and self-efficacy perceived by the supervisee. The Fernando and Hulse-Killacky study assessed general counseling students from Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educa¬tional Programs (CACREP) using the Supervisory Styles Inventory (SSI; Friedlander & Ward, 1984) with a measure of self-efficacy, the Counseling Self-Estimate Inventory (COSE; Larson, Suzuki, Gillespie, Potenza, Bechtel, & Toulouse, 1992). The present study used the SSI with a population of rehabilitation practicum counseling students from Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) accredited master level rehabilitation counseling training (RCT) programs to assess the relationship between supervisory …

Theses
This study assessed the effect of Behavioral Skills Training (instructions, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback) using a multiple baseline design to train 3 dental hygiene students to implement basic behavioral procedures (picture schedules, differential reinforcement, contingent escape, escape extinction, and least-to-most prompting) to manage and prevent challenging behavior during dental care procedures on special needs patients. The study took place in a mobile school-based dental clinic set up within 4 special schools. Training consisted of one group training session and several in-vivo training sessions. After training, participants' performance in the absence of feedback was assessed. Data show that participants performed less …
Exploring The Guilt-Proneness Of Non-Traditional Students, Kristian Leigh Alton
Exploring The Guilt-Proneness Of Non-Traditional Students, Kristian Leigh Alton
Theses
Current political forces see education as a potential solution to the economic slide the United States is experiencing. This push toward higher education and resulting employment creates a conflict for women expected by society to serve as primary caregivers of children. Research suggests that working mothers experience feelings of guilt related to the conflict between parenting and employment roles that may come from failure to personify the intensive mothering ideology. Student parents potentially share this guilt but few studies exist that investigate this. The results of this study suggest that student parents do experience guilt and identify relationships between guilt, …

Evaluation Of Growing Media For Annual Herb Production In Green Roof Modular Trays, Mary Margaret Fischer
Evaluation Of Growing Media For Annual Herb Production In Green Roof Modular Trays, Mary Margaret Fischer
Theses
Extensive urban development has led to the resurgence of green roofs. These vegetated roofs provide significant ecological and economic benefits including mitigation of the urban heat island effect, reduced storm-water runoff, lower energy costs, increased biodiversity, and improved aesthetics, as well as food production and security. Urban agriculture and food security are becoming increasingly important factors of the green roof renaissance. Due to weight load limitations of potential buildings, the ability to produce quality food in shallow media, less than 6.75 cm, could encourage green roof food production. The effectiveness of a commercially available green roof media and a vermicompost …
Is There Justice In Trauma? A Path Analysis Of Belief In A Just World, Coping, Meaning Making, And Posttraumatic Growth In Female Sexual Assault Survivors, Danielle Grace Fetty
Is There Justice In Trauma? A Path Analysis Of Belief In A Just World, Coping, Meaning Making, And Posttraumatic Growth In Female Sexual Assault Survivors, Danielle Grace Fetty
Theses
By using the theoretical framework developed by Schaefer and Moos (1998), this study examined the mechanisms through which personal beliefs in ultimate justice affect posttraumatic growth in female survivors of sexual assault. Problem solving, spiritual coping, and meaning making were examined as potential mediators between beliefs in ultimate justice and posttraumatic growth through a path analysis. In total, 144 female community survivors, psychology students, and other participants were recruited from a large mid-western university (mean age = 29.3). The online survey was composed of a demographic questionnaire, the Revised Sexual Experiences Survey (Koss et al., 2007), Emotion Thermometer (Mitchell, 2001), …

Religious Participation And Attitudes Towards Homosexual Marriage And Civil Unions, Amanda A. Patrick
Research Papers
This study examines how religious participation and progressive attitudes serve to shape opinions on same-sex marriage and civil unions. Although several investigations have been carried out on the issue of same-sex marriage and civil unions, mostly in the area of the influence of religious participation, attitudes however, have not been given much consideration. This study therefore expands the literature on the issue of same sex marriage and civil unions by looking at attitudes and beliefs such as: being open to new experiences, belief in doing social and religious good, belief in the attribution of choice in homosexuality, the belief that …

Co-Occurring Mental Health And Substance Use Disorders: A Review Of Issues And Clinical Approaches For Dual Diagnosis, Jacob Aaron Weatherford
Co-Occurring Mental Health And Substance Use Disorders: A Review Of Issues And Clinical Approaches For Dual Diagnosis, Jacob Aaron Weatherford
Research Papers
Individuals with co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorder (SUD) encounter a number of challenges that significantly diminish their quality of life. As compared to persons with either a mental illness or SUD alone, those with co-occurring disorders often have significantly more impairment in functioning, more severe symptoms, and are at an increased risk of health problems, hospitalization, incarceration, and suicide, amongst other negative consequences. Furthermore, those with co-occurring disorders are often more difficult to engage and retain in treatment, and have a worse prognosis than those with a single disorder. Treatment facilities are often not equipped with adequate assessment …
Attentional Focus Does Not Impact Agility Peformance Amongst Division I Women Collegiate Tennis Players, Brett Bartholomew
Attentional Focus Does Not Impact Agility Peformance Amongst Division I Women Collegiate Tennis Players, Brett Bartholomew
Research Papers
The main objective of the current study was to examine the effects attentional focus had on agility performance with a population of highly trained tennis players performing the “T”-test. It was hypothesized that agility performance would be enhanced in this expert population through the means of adopting an external focus of attention rather than either an internal focus, or no specific focus of attention. Participants in the study (N = 8) completed nine total trials (i.e., 3 under each condition), following instructions that were devised to elicit an external (EXT) focus, internal (INT) focus, or no focus (CON). Each …

There’S Something British About That: Aural Expressionism And Montage In Hitchcock’S Blackmail, Psycho, And The Birds, Laura D. Borger
Research Papers
This paper examines the use of visual and aural expressionistic techniques used in Hitchcock’s films Blackmail, Psycho, and The Birds. Hitchcock’s exposure to Soviet montage and German expressionist techniques as a member of The London Film Society may have influenced Blackmail, one of his first sound films. Once mastering the aural expressionism techniques he experimented with in Blackmail, it is as if Hitchcock reverts to silent film-making in later films with Psycho and The Birds. The intensity of image and sound is why Psycho and The Birds are lasting American cultural icons. Rather than …

Positive Effects Of Rewards And Performance Standards On Intrinsic Motivation, W. David Pierce, Judy Cameron, Katherine M. Banko, Sylvia So
The Psychological Record
The present study examined how rewards affect people's intrinsic motivation when the rewards are tied to meeting increasingly demanding performance standards. The experiment was a 2 x 2 factorial design with 2 levels of performance standard (constant, progressive) and 2 levels of reward (reward, no reward). Using a puzzle-solving task, 60 undergraduate university students were randomly assigned to the experimental conditions. In the constant conditions, participants were required to solve 3 puzzle problems on each of 3 trials; in the progressive conditions, participants were asked to solve 1, 3, and 5 problems over the trials. Half the participants were offered …
J. R. Kantor's Interbehavioral Psychology And Humanism, Dennis J. Delprato
J. R. Kantor's Interbehavioral Psychology And Humanism, Dennis J. Delprato
The Psychological Record
This paper addresses connections between J. R. Kantor's interbehavioral psychology and humanism. It discusses numerous ways in which interbehavioral thinking is humanistic. Kantor's naturalism and human-oriented historiography have foundations in the original humanism of Hellenic times. His secular orientation, cyclical theory of history, respect for Greek thought, independent critical thinking, and historical inclinations are found as key marks of Renaissance and Enlightenment humanism. Interbehavioral psychology agrees with many features of contemporary humanism by emphasizing (a) the human roots of all constructs, (b) the inseparability of mind-body, (c) holism over reductionism, (d) human as opposed to nonhuman research, (e) the acceptability …

The Political Coorientation Of Young Adults In Voluntary Associations And Its Relation With Conversation, William P. Eveland Jr, Myiah J. Hutchens
2012
We employ social network data from 25 randomly sampled voluntary associations to understand the factors associated with accurate perceptions of the political preferences of fellow group members. We build upon research in communication, social psychology, and social networks to identify relevant predictors. We analyze relationships at the dyadic level, but we also consider the aggregated accuracy of perceptions by ego of alters (“perceptiveness”) and the aggregated accuracy of perception by alters of ego (“explicitness”) regarding political candidate preferences using a multilevel modeling approach. We find relatively low levels of accuracy on average, and in general the variables that predict perceptiveness …
