Effect Of Time Constraint On Second Language Reading Comprehension, Hammad Alshammari
Effect Of Time Constraint On Second Language Reading Comprehension, Hammad Alshammari
Theses
This study aimed to investigate the role of time constraint on second language reading comprehension via the recruiting of 47 Saudi participants who were learning English as a second language. Subjects shared similar level of English proficiency; all participants were in their third semester of English at Aljouf University, Saudi Arabia, at the time of data collection. Participants were divided into three time groups; limited (20 minutes), extended (30 minutes), and unlimited (40 minutes). In terms of stimuli, a reading text was adapted from a standard English proficiency exam, TOEFL. The text consisted of 699 words and was of moderate …

Characterization Of The Power Method Transformation Through The Method Of Percentiles, Jennifer Koran, Todd C. Headrick, Tzu Chun Kuo
Characterization Of The Power Method Transformation Through The Method Of Percentiles, Jennifer Koran, Todd C. Headrick, Tzu Chun Kuo
Conference Proceedings
This paper derives a standard normal based power method polynomial transformation for Monte Carlo simulation studies, approximating distributions, and fitting distributions to data based on the method of percentiles. The proposed method is used primarily when (i) conventional estimators such as skew and kurtosis are unknown or (ii) data are unavailable but percentiles are known (e.g., standardized test score reports). The proposed transformation also has the advantage that solutions to polynomial coefficients are available in simple closed form and thus obviates numerical equation solving. The Monte Carlo results presented in this study indicate that the estimators based on the method …
A Method For Simulating Burr Type Iii And Type Xii Distributions Through L-Moments And L-Correlations, Mohan D. Pant, Todd C. Headrick
A Method For Simulating Burr Type Iii And Type Xii Distributions Through L-Moments And L-Correlations, Mohan D. Pant, Todd C. Headrick
Publications
This paper derives the Burr Type III and Type XII family of distributions in the contexts of univariate 𝐿-moments and the 𝐿- correlations. Included is the development of a procedure for specifying nonnormal distributions with controlled degrees of 𝐿-skew, 𝐿-kurtosis, and 𝐿-correlations. The procedure can be applied in a variety of settings such as statistical modeling (e.g., forestry, fracture roughness, life testing, operational risk, etc.) and Monte Carlo or simulation studies. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate that 𝐿-moment-based Burr distributions are superior to their conventional moment-based analogs in terms of estimation and distribution fitting. Evaluation of the proposed procedure …

A Review And Research Suggestions For Empirical Approaches To Evaluating Reinforcing Effects Of Peer Attention Vs. Teacher Attention In The General Education Classroom, Shelley J. Green
Research Papers
Behavior management in the general education classroom can be difficult at times for educators. Attention is one reinforcer of children's behavior in the classroom and the child's behavior may be maintained by teacher attention or peer attention. If attentions is implemented appropriately, peer or teacher attention may prove to be an effective reinforcer in maintaining appropriate behaviors in the classroom. Teacher attention is commonly used to maintain student performance (Broussard & Northup, 1997). Educators may not know which is more reinforcing to the typical student in the general education classroom - teacher attention or peer attention. However, evaluating the effectiveness …

Implications Of Traumatic Brain Injury In The Military, Jeremy Rosene
Implications Of Traumatic Brain Injury In The Military, Jeremy Rosene
Research Papers
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a disability that affects many different people in many different ways. The impact the TBI has on a person’s life varies considerably based on the severity of the injury and other psychosocial factors. TBI is one of the disabilities that can and does affect people from all cultures, all age groups, and all socioeconomic groups. It is also known to some as the “invisible disability” because it can present with no obvious visible manifestations and also because the nature of the disability can impact the individual with the TBI’s ability to fully understand their own …
