Recognizing The Impact Of Personal And Environmental Influences On Type 2 Diabetes Management, Johna S. Brown Jan 2013

Recognizing The Impact Of Personal And Environmental Influences On Type 2 Diabetes Management, Johna S. Brown

Research Papers

Globalization has drastically altered the way humans function. Modern ways of life have induced obesity and type 2 diabetes upsurges on a global level. Type 2 diabetes is a complex chronic illness that can be extremely difficult to prevent and manage. It requires strict consistency in terms of energy consumption, self-assessment, and physical activity. A wide array of variables impact human behavior and one’s ability to abide by such strict regimens. These variables can often be categorized as environmental or personal influences. Comprehensive understanding of these variables can provide insight to diabetics and health professions regarding barriers to diabetes management …

An External Focus Of Attention Enhances Manual Tracking Performance, Matthew Schlesinger, Jared Porter, Robert Russell Jan 2013

An External Focus Of Attention Enhances Manual Tracking Performance, Matthew Schlesinger, Jared Porter, Robert Russell

Publications

The present study investigated the enhancement effects of an external focus of attention (FOA) in the context of a manual tracking task, in which participants tracked both visible and occluded targets. Three conditions were compared, which manipulated the distance of the FOA from the participant as well as the external/internal dimension. As expected, an external FOA resulted in lower tracking errors than an internal FOA. In addition, analyses of participants’ movement patterns revealed a systematic shift toward higher-frequency movements in the external FOA condition, consistent with the idea that an external FOA exploits the natural movement dynamics available during skilled …

Exploring Linkages Between Consumer Food Co-Operatives And Domestic Fair Trade In The United States, Leslie Duram Jan 2013

Exploring Linkages Between Consumer Food Co-Operatives And Domestic Fair Trade In The United States, Leslie Duram

Publications

Consumer Food Co-operatives (co-ops) have provided consumers an alternative to corporate supermarkets and big-box stores since the 1960s. Producers seeking broader marketing opportunities often turn to co-ops. This study examines how, within Alternative Food Networks (AFNs), co-ops play a role in the emergence of the Domestic Fair Trade movement in the US. The Domestic Fair Trade (DFT) movement is based on the idea that family farms and small- to mid-sized farms in the global north are facing many of the same pressures as producers in the global south. The Domestic Fair Trade Association (DFTA) in the United States is the …

An Alternative To Cronbach’S Alpha: A L-Moment Based Measure Of Internal-Consistency Reliability, Todd C. Headrick, Yanyan Sheng Jan 2013

An Alternative To Cronbach’S Alpha: A L-Moment Based Measure Of Internal-Consistency Reliability, Todd C. Headrick, Yanyan Sheng

Book Chapters

Data sets in the social and behavioral sciences are often small or heavytailed. Previous studies have demonstrated that small samples or leptokurtic distributions adversely affect the performance of Cronbach’s coefficient alpha. To address these concerns, we propose an alternative estimator of reliability based on Lcomoments. The empirical results of this study demonstrate that when sample sizes are small and distributions are heavy-tailed that the proposed coefficient L-alpha has substantial advantages over the conventional Cronbach estimator of reliability in terms of relative bias and relative standard error.

Erring On The Side Of Life: Children With Rare Trisomy Conditions, Medical Interventions And Quality Of Life, Deborah Bruns Jan 2013

Erring On The Side Of Life: Children With Rare Trisomy Conditions, Medical Interventions And Quality Of Life, Deborah Bruns

Publications

he prevailing viewpoint on children with rare trisomy conditions such as trisomy 18 (t18) and trisomy 13 (t13) is almost uniformly negative. Yet, case studies offer information about long-term survivors. What is missing in the discussion is an unbiased examination of surviving children within the context of necessary, rather than “aggressive”, medical interventions and overall quality of life. A move beyond palliative or comfort care must be an option for this population. There must be a move toward valuation of life and corresponding provision of treatment and examination of developmental gains rather than limited intervention or palliative care for infants …

Another New Journal? The Psychological Record: Volumes I-V; 1937-1945, Paul T. Mountjoy, Donna M. Cone

The Psychological Record

At the time of its inception every scientific journal is a new journal, and its future course is in doubt. Does it have a functional niche in the scientific community, and will it survive? Later, when the new journal is taken for granted by the younger generation of scientists, the question of what conditions led to the establishment and maintenance of the publication arise. This historical review addresses these issues for the first five volumes of The Psychological Record. The Record was founded to decrease publication lag at a time when American psychology was expanding rapidly just before the onset …

A Comparison Of The Cultural/Ethnic Perceptions And Educational Beliefs Of Korean Immigrant And Non-Immigrant Families, Eun Jin Hwang Dec 2012

A Comparison Of The Cultural/Ethnic Perceptions And Educational Beliefs Of Korean Immigrant And Non-Immigrant Families, Eun Jin Hwang

Dissertations

As a critical unit for identifying family-constructed meanings of education, a deeper contextual understanding of Korean immigrant parents' cultural/ethnic perceptions in relation to educational beliefs should be central to culturally responsive education designed to support Korean immigrant families. It is necessary for educators to examine the beliefs and practices of Korean immigrant families around education in order to broaden the educational conversation and mutual understanding between parents and teachers for effectively facilitating their children's learning and socialization. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the variations in cultural/ethnic perceptions and educational beliefs about childrearing and early schooling among three …

The Pragmatic Role Of Code-Switching And Simultaneous Production During Play Contexts Of Bimodal Bilingual Hearing Children Of Deaf Parents, John R. Hanson Dec 2012

The Pragmatic Role Of Code-Switching And Simultaneous Production During Play Contexts Of Bimodal Bilingual Hearing Children Of Deaf Parents, John R. Hanson

Theses

It is difficult, if not impossible to find another code-switching condition that allows for the production of "simultaneous" language use in communication like that which is found in bimodal bilingualism. In 2002, Bauer, Hall, and Kruth conducted a study that examined code-switching in a play context for a German/English bilingual child. Emmorey, Borinstein, and Thomson in 2005 investigated bimodal bilingualism in adults. However there has not been a study like these for hearing children using ASL/English who have Deaf parents. By applying Bauer, Hall, and Kruth's study as a template for research into code-switching and adapting some of the processes …

Reframing The Mediation Lens: The Call For A Situational Style Of Mediation, Tanya M. Marcum, Charles R. Stoner, Sandra J. Perry

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Child custody mediation can have a positive impact on the parties involved in mediation as well as on the process of settlement itself.  The process of mediation focuses the parties on the needs of the children and helps the parents to be realistic in their expectations regarding custody and visitation of the children.  Mediators realize the importance of listening carefully to the parties involved in the custody dispute.  This article looks at three distinct groups of mediators involved in child custody mediation in the state of Illinois, the mediators perceived mediation styles, and their actual mediation styles.  As a result, …
