Micro-Blog’S Role In Chinese Media Industry: A Booster Of Media Freedom And A Hotbed Of Gossip, Yizhe Wang May 2013

Micro-Blog’S Role In Chinese Media Industry: A Booster Of Media Freedom And A Hotbed Of Gossip, Yizhe Wang

Research Papers

China’s media freedom has improved compared with several decades ago, but the Chinese media is still under the supervision of the Chinese central government. In 2009, Micro-Blog service was brought into the Chinese media market by Sina, one of China’s biggest media companies. Since its start, Micro-Blog service has, to some extent, changed the environment of the Chinese media industry. Netizens use Micro-Blog to negotiate with the government about policy-making, to call for help during emergencies, to send their opinions about social or economic issues, and most importantly, to broadcast their everyday lives. But problems have also been generated by …

Assessing Foreclosure And Crime At Street Segments In Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, Blake Richard Christenson May 2013

Assessing Foreclosure And Crime At Street Segments In Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, Blake Richard Christenson

Theses

Foreclosures are potentially problematic for neighborhood crime rates by providing crime attractors to residential communities. In the past, like many criminogenic features, foreclosures were typically seen as an inner city problem; however, in the wake of the housing market collapse of 2008 precipitated by suspect banking practices, foreclosures were particularly impacting young and new middle class homeowners (i.e., people with little credit history or assets). This study improves upon past research in two areas. First, instead of using large heterogeneous units of analysis (e.g., block groups, tracts, counties), this study uses street blocks. Street blocks, here, are preferred because of …

"Because I Like It? No, They Made Me Do It!!" Why Juveniles Engage In Sexting, Jennifer Ann Haegele May 2013

"Because I Like It? No, They Made Me Do It!!" Why Juveniles Engage In Sexting, Jennifer Ann Haegele

Theses

Developments in technology have changed the way we do everything; advanced our research capabilities, enhanced our communication abilities and speeds, even the way people commit crimes. It provides perpetrators with a new way to commit traditional crimes as well as new forms of crime. One of the many opportunities involved with increased communication devices is known as sexting. Adolescent sexting has received national and local attention due to possible long-term implications such as registering as a sex offender and even suicide. Sexting, which is considered an antisocial behavior among adolescents, has progressively become implicated in peer pressure as well. Peer …

The Sound Of Music: The Influence Of Evoked Emotion On Recognition Memory For Musical Excerpts Across The Lifespan, Sherrie L. Parks May 2013

The Sound Of Music: The Influence Of Evoked Emotion On Recognition Memory For Musical Excerpts Across The Lifespan, Sherrie L. Parks

Theses

TITLE: THE SOUND OF MUSIC: THE INFLUENCE OF EVOKED EMOTION ON RECOGNITION MEMORY FOR MUSICAL EXCERPTS ACROSS THE LIFESPAN Socioemotional Selectivity Theory (Carstensen, 1999) posits that as people age, they selectively focus on positive aspects of emotional stimuli as opposed to negative as a way of regulating emotions. Thus, older adults remember positive information better than negative. This hypothesis has been tested extensively with visual stimuli, but rarely with auditory stimuli. Findings from this study provide support in the auditory domain. In this study, 135 younger, middle-aged, and older adults heard consonant (pleasant) and dissonant (unpleasant) musical excerpts. Participants were …

The Effect Of Condtional Discrimination Training On Choice Making In Children During `Pre-Gambling' Activities, Leigha S. Shoup May 2013

The Effect Of Condtional Discrimination Training On Choice Making In Children During `Pre-Gambling' Activities, Leigha S. Shoup

Theses

Past research has shown conditional discrimination training of a stimulus to change its function by manipulating variables within the contingencies (e.g., Johnson & Dixon, 2009), and the present study attempted to extend this research. Experimenters exposed 3 children (ages 6-9 years) to a computer program that trained participant to discriminate between two contextual cures (blue and yellow) representing more than and less than. All three participants will demonstrate an increased preference toward the color that had been paired with more than during both conditional discrimination training phases.

It will begin by supplementing readers with information regarding normal anatomy and physiology required for speech production, types of laryngeal cancers, anatomical changes resulting from laryngeal cancers, and treatment options that can be implemented in order to help preserve the ability to speak. Next, there will be descriptions of the current available alaryngeal speaking options for laryngectomized patients. The advantages and disadvantages of these options will be compared …

Deviant Peers, Opportunity, And Cyberbullying: A Theoretical Examination Of A New Deviance, Charern Lee May 2013

Deviant Peers, Opportunity, And Cyberbullying: A Theoretical Examination Of A New Deviance, Charern Lee

Theses

Scholars of cybercrime have used social learning theory (SLT) and routine activities theory (RAT) to explain the variation in offending and victimization; however, to date, only RAT has been used to explain the specific behavior of cyberbullying. Therefore, this study combines SLT and RAT concepts to explain the cyberbullying phenomenon. Today's adolescents are exposed early to cyberspace and this has given them more opportunities to bully their peers, especially in an environment that is difficult to monitor by adults. The results from this study of a sample of Southeastern middle and high school students suggest that the opportunity component of …

Who Says I Should Leave? Factors Determining The Decision To Leave Home During Disasters, Vondragas J. Smalley Apr 2013

Who Says I Should Leave? Factors Determining The Decision To Leave Home During Disasters, Vondragas J. Smalley

Honors Theses

In an effort to minimize casualties during natural catastrophes, specifically hurricanes, researchers have found that risk perception, socioeconomic status, and past evacuation experience are important determinants in evacuation behavior. This study argues that these factors as well as race are important determinants in the decision of individuals to evacuate in the face of natural disasters. My investigation employs chi-square analysis and cross tabulation to determine the importance of these factors. The findings indicate that these hypotheses may impact the decision of residents to evacuate in the face of natural disasters and warrant further study by those doing evacuation behavior research.

Is There The Threat Of Dutch Disease In The United States? A Look At The Impacts Of Natural Resource Exports On The Number Of Domestic Manufacturing Jobs, Andrew M. Miskell Apr 2013

Is There The Threat Of Dutch Disease In The United States? A Look At The Impacts Of Natural Resource Exports On The Number Of Domestic Manufacturing Jobs, Andrew M. Miskell

Research Papers

This paper intends on investigating the potential relationship that exists between the number of manufacturing jobs in the United States and the exportation of natural resources. It will stress how the increase seen in the exporting of America’s natural resources over a thirty-three year period from 1980 to 2012, has coincided with significant job loss in the manufacturing sector. Specifically, this paper will show through a cross-sectional analysis of the United States that there has been a negative, linear, and significant relationship between these items of interest.

With assistance from previous studies on methamphetamine use and HIV, the theory that the risk of HIV is increased with the use of methamphetamine will be supported. The purpose of this paper is to educate and illustrate the dangerous effects of methamphetamine use among individuals with HIV. The paper will conclude with an examination of possible HIV treatment and prevention options to better assist individuals who use methamphetamine.

What’S Pay Got To Do With It? Collective Identity Formation In The Americorps Program, Ryan Guy Ceresola Apr 2013

What’S Pay Got To Do With It? Collective Identity Formation In The Americorps Program, Ryan Guy Ceresola

Research Papers

It is clear that Social Movement Organizations (SMOs) aim to recruit and retain members, and most do so by promoting some sort of collective identity formation. What is unclear, however, is the role of extrinsic rewards in promoting collective identity formation in SMO members. To address this issue, I use AmeriCorps to investigate the consequences extrinsic rewards have on collective identity formation. Based on twenty-two interviews with a diverse sample of AmeriCorps members, I find AmeriCorps members do not express a sense of collective identity with their fellow members with reference to the work they do, the values they have, …
