Trends In The Age Of Menarche, Elizabeth M. Nielsen
Trends In The Age Of Menarche, Elizabeth M. Nielsen
Honors Theses
Menarche is the onset of menses and this age this occurs differs with every girl. There are many factors that can influence this age or result from it. Menses is a crucial step in the process of pubertal maturation. This study conducted a survey to women of the Carbondale, IL area ranging from 12.5 to 74.42 years old. The survey inquired basic characteristics such as height, weight, and age of menarche. Factors such as body mass index (BMI), plastic use due to estrogen-like endocrine disrupting chemicals, the maternal age at childbirth and population size were also determined. The average age …

Evaluation Of A Stable Isotope Labeling Technique For Mass-Marking Fin Rays Of Age-0 Lake Sturgeon, Kurt T. Smith, Gregory Whitledge
Evaluation Of A Stable Isotope Labeling Technique For Mass-Marking Fin Rays Of Age-0 Lake Sturgeon, Kurt T. Smith, Gregory Whitledge
Publications
The effectiveness of marking age-0 lake sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens Rafinesque, pectoral fin rays with a stable strontium isotope was evaluated. Age-0 lake sturgeon were reared in water spiked with 0 (control), 25, 50, or 100 μg L-1 86SrC03 for 10 and 24 d; fish from each treatment group were retained for up to 120 d post-labeling to assess mark retention. Enriched isotope marks imparted to fin rays were distinct from fin ray 88Sr/86Sr ratios of control fish immediately following marking, with the 100 μg L-1 86SrCO3 treatments consistently yielding the highest …

A History And Definition Of Green Roof Technology With Recommendations For Future Research, John D. Magill, Karen Midden, John Groninger, Matthew Therrell
Research Papers
Green roof technology has a history that predates the modern era. Many functions of green roofs utilized during human history are analogous to contemporary functions. The justification of the use of green roof technology based on a review of literature shows the multiple and documented benefits that these systems can impart to the urban environment. A case study of the installation of the Southern Illinois University Carbondale green roof, showed the actual process of constructing the system. The maintenance and observation of this system gives firsthand experience. Interviews with green roof professionals allow greater understanding of current research needs. Finally, …

Job Dissatisfaction: A Factor In Maintaining A Highly-Qualified Family And Consumers Sciences Teacher Workforce, Sally E. Arnett, Frederick W. Polkinghorne
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
The supply and demand mismatch in available family and consumer sciences (FACS) teachers in the State of Illinois makes it essential that attrition among highly qualified FACS teachers be decreased or eliminated. Job dissatisfaction has been a signification predictor of the decision to end employment. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify specific factors that contributed to the level of job satisfaction or dissatisfaction among Illinois FACS teachers. Using a descriptive research design, members of the Illinois Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Association were asked to participate in an online survey. Results revealed the majority (95.06%) of participants …

Framing Climate Policy Debates: Science, Network, And U.S. Congress, 1976-2007, Hyung Sam Park, Xinsheng Liu, Arnold Vedlitz
2010
Debates on global climate change (GCC) have been heavily influenced by such factors as scientific evidence, media coverage, public concerns, partisan interest, and so forth. Focusing on the linkages among the congressional committees, hearings, and invited witnesses (and their sectors), this study investigates the relational conditions under which congressional committees have mobilized climate expertise to discuss climate change issues for the past decades in U.S. Congress. Our findings show that agenda setting and witness selection by the committees significantly differed across the party lines: more environmental scientists were invited to define GCC as a threat in Democratic Congresses, whereas industrial …

TITLE: Contamination Events and Linkages in World Rice Markets MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Dwight Sanders In August of 2006, genetically modified LibertyLink rice contaminated the supply of non-GMO rice in the United States, causing damage to the U.S. rice production sector's credibility in their export market. Act 1: The Ocean Smell (1624-1938), James Smith Allen
A Privileged Past
The first act of "A Privileged Past" recounts the history of four families – the Allens of Manchester, Massachusetts; the Roomes of New York, New York; the Kruegers of Newark, New Jersey; and the Smiths also of Newark – since their arrival from Europe (the first two in the seventeenth century, the latter two in the nineteenth). These people brought with them distinct ethnic identities, which helped define the communities they joined, and in some cases led, as immigrants to the new world. Their experiences across and by the Atlantic Ocean are captured by this chapter’s prevailing figure of speech, …
