Effects Of Incremental Amounts Of Fish Oil On Trans Fatty Acids And Butyrivibrio Bacteria In Continuous Culture Fermenters., A A Abughazaleh, A Ishlak
Peer-reviewed Articles
Previous studies have shown that adding fish oil (FO) to ruminant animal diets increased vaccenic acid (VA; t11 C18:1) accumulation in the rumen. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary FO amounts on selected strains of rumen bacteria involved in biohydrogenation. A single-flow continuous culture system consisting of four fermenters was used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design with four 9 days consecutive periods. Treatment diets were as follows: (i) control diet (53:47 forage to concentrate; CON), (ii) control plus FO at 0.5% (DM basis; FOL), (iii) control plus FO at 2% …

An Analysis Of Father Involvement Practices In Early Childhood: Implications For Early Intervention Service Delivery, Katherine A. Peterson
Research Papers
While research has shown the important role fathers play in young children’s lives, fathers are often not involved in Early Intervention services. This literature review will examine father involvement in early childhood programs in the United States, father involvement in early childhood programs in other countries, and staff perceptions of father involvement in early childhood programs. Findings include fathers preferred attending activities for all family members, and designed to support children’s growth and development. Fathers were not as likely to participate in men-only activities. Barriers to father involvement such as scheduling, lack of energy and resources, and child’s mother prefers …

Vadose Zone Processes: A Compendium For Teaching Interdisciplinary Modeling, Robert Heinse, Timothy E. Link
Vadose Zone Processes: A Compendium For Teaching Interdisciplinary Modeling, Robert Heinse, Timothy E. Link
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
We describe one approach of teaching vadose zone (VZ) processes to non-vadose zone (NVZ) scholars interested in the water and climate change nexus. Our objective is to introduce key models and input parameters, briefly explain the mechanics of solving the problem using the Richards equation approach, and to point out alternative and scale-dependent approaches and solutions. Our goal is to provide enough information such that students gain some familiarity with key terms, have a rudimentary mechanistic understanding, and most importantly, know where to look for more information. We recognize that in some situations a significant amount of complexity is embedded …

Texas High Plains Initiative For Strategic And Innovative Irrigation Management And Conservation, Justin Weinheimer, Phillip Johnson, Donna Mitchell, Jeff Johnson, Rick Kellison
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
The strategic management of irrigation applications to improve water-use efficiency and meet economic objectives has been identified as a key factor in the conservation of water resources in the Texas High Plains region. Two field level demonstration projects have been ongoing in the Texas High Plains to evaluate advantages and disadvantages of irrigation water conservation methods. Since 2010, the North Plains Groundwater Conservation District has evaluated corn production using 12 acre-inches or less of applied irrigation water with a goal to produce 200 bushels per acre. In the South Plains, the Texas Alliance for Water Conservation (TAWC) has worked directly …

Improved seed composition in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] for protein and oil quality is one of the major goals of soybean breeders. A group of genes that act as quantitative traits with their effects can alter protein, oil, palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids percentage in soybean seeds. The objective of this study was to identify Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) controlling protein, oil, and fatty acids content in a set of F5:8 RILs de-rived from a cross between lines, ‘MD 96-5722’ and ‘Spencer’ using 5376 Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) markers from the Illumina Infinium SoySNP6K BeadChip array. QTL …

Demographic studies of imperiled populations can aid managers in planning conservation actions. However, applicability of findings for a single population across a species’ range is sometimes questionable. We conducted long-term studies (8 and 9 years, respectively) of 2 populations of the lizard Phrynosoma cornutum separated by 1000 km within the historical distribution of the species. The sites were a 15-ha urban wildlife reserve on Tinker Air Force Base (TAFB) in central Oklahoma and a 6000-ha wildland site in southern Texas, the Chaparral Wildlife Management Area (CWMA). We predicted a trade-off between the effect of adult survival and fecundity on population …

Estimating Abundance Of Adult Trachemys Scripta With Camera Traps: Accuracy, Precision And Probabilities Of Capture For A Closed Population, Robert D. Bluett, Eric M. Schauber

Low and variable rates of capture are common problems when estimating abundance of freshwater turtles with capture-mark-recapture (CMR). We speculated camera traps would allow us to obtain reliable estimates of abundance by re-sighting marked Trachemys scripta elegans (Sliders) as they basked on man-made rafts during a 20-day surveillance period. We evaluated the method by releasing Sliders in a fenced enclosure to compare estimates from CMR to true abundance. We also evaluated probabilities of detection and retention of marks. Permanence of marks applied with marine epoxy satisfied assumptions for CMR. Camera traps detected 23 of 25 Sliders. Our ability to discern …

In Vitro Culture Of Bovine Preantral Follicles: A Review, Valdevane R Araújo, Melba O Gastal, José R Figueiredo, Eduardo L Gastal
Peer-reviewed Articles
Preantral follicles are the majority of the ovarian follicle population and their use as a source of homogeneous oocytes for bovine reproductive biotechnologies could result in a substantial advance in this field. However, while in other species embryos and offspring have been produced, in bovine species the results have been limited to the follicular activation of small (primordial) preantral follicles and formation of early antral follicles from large (secondary) preantral follicles after in vitro culture. Therefore, this review will highlight the basic aspects of bovine folliculogenesis by focusing on preantral follicles, the methods of harvesting preantral follicles, the main results …

The Effects Of Myofascial Release Vs Static Stretching On Hamstrings Range Of Motion, Patrick M. Keys
Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of three days of foam rolling on the hamstrings range of motion in comparison with static stretching. Lower extremity injuries are prevalent in strength training and sports today. Poor flexibility has been found to increase the risk of overuse injuries and significantly affect the individual’s level of function and performance. Self myofascial release (SMR), foam rolling, is a recent modality clinically used to increase flexibility. On the other hand, there are few research studies on the technique.
Twenty college students participated in this study. Ten participants were in the static …
