Assessing Tribal College Priorities For Enhancing Climate Adaptation On Reservation Lands, Helen M. Fillmore, Loretta Singletary, John Phillips
Assessing Tribal College Priorities For Enhancing Climate Adaptation On Reservation Lands, Helen M. Fillmore, Loretta Singletary, John Phillips
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
On reservation lands, tribal colleges and universities (TCUs) are key to preparing indigenous communities to adapt to the effects of a changing climate. The original mission of TCUs, to improve access to higher education and to sustain the cultural heritage of indigenous people, facilitates close ties between TCU faculty and staff and the indigenous communities they serve. Since 1994, the land-grant status of TCUs allows access to limited federal funds in support of research, education, and outreach to improve food security, natural resource management, and rural quality of life, while expanding public access to higher education to underserved populations in …

Application Of Plant Based Edible Coatings For Maintaining Post Harvest Quality And Extending Shelf Life Of Strawberries, Rajiv Dhital
Application Of Plant Based Edible Coatings For Maintaining Post Harvest Quality And Extending Shelf Life Of Strawberries, Rajiv Dhital
Theses
Strawberries are a popular fruit with a pleasing color and flavor. However, its delicate tissue and high sugar content makes it highly perishable with visible mold. In this study, we have attempted to test feasibility of different edible coatings for extending shelf life of ‘Chandler’ strawberries subjected to simulated vibrations of local transportation. Six types of coatings were compared based on the quality of treated berries. Curcumin and limonene were used as natural antimicrobials and coatings were prepared from their liposomes and were over-coated with methyl cellulose. One set of each coating type were subjected to the simulated vibration of …

Beyoncé is one of the biggest performing artists in the world. She is known for being a dancer, a singer, an actress and a businesswoman. What a lot of people tend to ignore is not her singing voice, but her speaking voice. This means when she speaks out aside from her singing career. This is what she believes in and how she takes action to make sure that people hear her when she feels she needs to be heard. The objectives are to study the marketing and communication strategies she uses to promote her causes, particularly through social media that …
Examining The Changing Role Of Influencing Factors In The Association Between Food Insecurity & Obesity, Saad Khan
Research Papers
About 49 million Americans – roughly 15% of entire America - live in households that lack the means to get enough nutritious food on a regular basis. Past experiences and fear of food accessibility could affect the quality of diet and eating behavior in many ways. In this study we examine long-term trends in food insecurity and obesity over a 6-year period. We specifically examine the changing role of health behaviors in the association between food insecurity and obesity. Most studies on this topic have conducted cross-sectional analysis. Examining this association over time would help us make more careful considerations …

The Inability To Bridge The Gap In Oral Health And Health Care Through The Affordable Care Act (Aca), Jennifer S. Sherry Rdh, Msed, Samantha N. Hennig Rdh, Bsdh
Journal of Applied Sciences and Arts
It has been scientifically proven that systemic conditions can manifest in the oral cavity. Medicare and Medicaid recipients have limited preventive oral health services covered, especially for adults. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) does not have an oral health focus and leaves many adults without basic preventive oral health services. Typically, most patients who have private insurance can afford to pay out of pocket for premiums and co-payments to practitioners. Those who cannot afford care do not receive care and this is not health equity and needs to be investigated.

Increased Overwinter Mortalities Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) Fawns During A Drought Year, Marie I. Tosa, Matthew Thomas Springer, Clayton Nielsen, Eric M. Schauber
Publications
Mortality rates of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus (Zimmerman, 1780)) fawns have been quantified throughout North America. Few studies, however, have assessed cause-specific mortality of fawns after the first 3 months of life or during a severe weather event. During 2010-2014, we captured and radiotracked 93 fawns in southern and central Illinois and recorded 18 mortality events. In order of importance, survival rates were affected by days since capture, year of drought, age at capture, week post-capture (1/0 indicator), and region. Estimated overwinter (fall through spring) survival rate (± SE) of fawns in both regions during 2010-14 was 0.83 ± …

Impact Of Client Criminal History: Barriers To Consider For The Rehabilitation Counselor, Brent Van Ham
Research Papers
For people navigating the world with a disability, the presence of a criminal record may present them with yet another challenge to function within their lives to the fullest extent possible. The prevalence of people who seek rehabilitative services who have criminal records may require counselors to have more knowledge of the barriers that they frequently encounter. The rehabilitation counselor who works with these clients must take these barriers into account when planning and implementing services for them, just as they must take into account other barriers that are socially derived, such as discrimination in all of its forms and …

Optimizing Procedural Tov-112 Ovarian Carcinoma Cell Transfection Via Initial Seeding And Pbabe/Pei Jet Ratio Variations, Cassondra Walker
Honors Theses
Cell transfection is an exemplary tool in protein analysis and examining transcription factor activity. While general procedures are commonly followed, each cell line requires slight differentiation in pBABE/PEI JET ratios and initial cell count for optimal transfection results. This research focusses on determining a successful procedure for TOV-112 carcinoma cells for future work with 2-methoxyestradiol and NFkB. 2-methoxyestradiol is an angiogenesis inhibitor believed to decrease inflammatory processes. NFkB promoter controls the luciferase gene on the MetLuc plasmid and is pro-inflammatory. The objective of this experiment is to modify the variables until successful results at 24 and 48 hours are observed. …

The world is changing. India is changing. Food is changing. Bodies are changing. What does this mean for the women of Maharashtra, India? Globalization and modernity manifest in new and interesting ways the world over. As people establish networks of global commodity, capital, and human circulation, anthropologists raise pertinent concerns. While some are apprehensive about cultural loss and western cultural imperialism, others make a case for the rise of glocalization. While some espouse the positives of a free market economy, others are critical of the nutrition transition in developing countries and what this means for the health of the people …
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy For Children With Autism, Tiffany Thomas
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy For Children With Autism, Tiffany Thomas
Theses
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a pervasive lifelong developmental delay with a prevalence of 1 in 68 children. This growing epidemic occurs for unspecified causes and researchers continue to explore evidence-based treatments available. Parent–child interaction therapy (PCIT) is a parent training program, initially developed for implementation with typically-developing children. PCIT has shown effectiveness in increasing child compliance, minimizing disruptive problem, improving parent-child relationship satisfaction, and communication. The present study investigated the efficacy of PCIT as an evidence-based practice (EBP) for children with ASD by implementing a non-concurrent multiple baseline design across three participants. Results indicated socially significant increases in child …

The Embodiment And Discourses Of A Taboo: #Brelfie, Sarah Beach
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
#brelfie is an online social media trend that seeks to normalize public breastfeeding through exposure. “Brelfies” are “breastfeeding selfies”—in which a mother uploads an image of herself breastfeeding to social media. It is controversial even within the trend itself, as women disagree on how it potentially pressures women to perform motherhood. Much of Western culture views the female breast as a sexual organ, and thus creates norms about how breasts should be functioned and displayed in public. Yet, many others would argue that breastfeeding is the only legitimate use of the female breast and is therefore permissibly exhibited in public. …

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
How can the teaching of biology contribute to sustainability education? The authors of this article suggest that their approach has the potential to increase the students’ level of engagement with the natural environment. The scope of biology teaching can be widened by allowing room for more experience and art-based activities. Such a change may deepen and expand the learners’ insights in natural phenomena, which in turn might foster or enhance an attitude of care-taking for the natural environment.

Here we present the genome sequence and annotation of the wild olive tree (Olea europaea var. sylvestris), called oleaster, which is considered an ancestor of cultivated olive trees. More than 50,000 protein-coding genes were predicted, a majority of which could be anchored to 23 pseudochromosomes obtained through a newly constructed genetic map. The oleaster genome contains signatures of two Oleaceae lineage-specific paleopolyploidy events, dated at ∼28 and ∼59 Mya. These events contributed to the expansion and neofunctionalization of genes and gene families that play important roles in oil biosynthesis. The functional divergence of oil biosynthesis pathway genes, such as FAD2, …

There are concerns about using synthetic phenolic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) as food additives because of the reported negative effects on human health. Thus, a replacement of these synthetics by antioxidant extractions from various foods has been proposed. More than 8000 different phenolic compounds have been characterized; fruits and vegetables are the prime sources of natural antioxidants. In order to extract, measure, and identify bioactive compounds from a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, researchers use multiple techniques and methods. This review includes a brief description of a wide range of different assays. The …

Cognitive function declines with age and appears to correlate with decreased cerebral metabolic rate (CMR). Caloric restriction, an antiaging manipulation that extends life-span and can preserve cognitive function, is associated with decreased glucose uptake, decreased lactate levels, and increased ketone body (KB) levels in the brain. Since the majority of brain nutrients come from the periphery, this study examined whether the capacity to regulate peripheral glucose levels and KB production differs in animals with successful cognitive aging (growth hormone receptor knockouts, GHRKOs) versus unsuccessful cognitive aging (the 3xTg-AD mouse model of Alzheimer's disease). Animals were fasted for 5 hours with …
