Reduced Phytoplankton And Zooplankton Diversity Associated With Increased Cyanobacteria In Lake Champlain, Usa, Katelyn A. Bockwoldt, Emily R. Nodine, Timothy B. Mihuc, Angela D. Shambaugh, Jason D. Stockwell
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Anthropogenic inputs of nutrients threaten water quality around the world, causing eutrophication and altering phytoplankton communities. In freshwater systems, certain physiochemical conditions, including high TP, low TN:TP, and warm temperatures, can lead to problematic cyanobacteria blooms. Cyanobacteria can decrease phytoplankton diversity and phytoplankton diversity has been positively linked to zooplankton diversity, suggesting that cyanobacteria may have indirect negative effects on zooplankton diversity. Using monitoring data from Lake Champlain, we tested three hypotheses: (1) cyanobacteria density and phytoplankton diversity are inversely related; (2) phytoplankton diversity and zooplankton diversity are positively related; and by extension (3) cyanobacteria density and zooplankton diversity are …
Governor Rauner’S Turnaround Agenda From A Comparative State Policy Context, Marnie Leonard
Governor Rauner’S Turnaround Agenda From A Comparative State Policy Context, Marnie Leonard
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
The purpose of this research is to study Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner’s Turnaround Agenda, which he initially unveiled in 2015 after taking office. His plan was meant to overhaul state government with goals that were largely focused on keeping businesses in Illinois and convincing new businesses to take root, but proposals like limiting union power and decreasing workers’ compensation costs for employers have kept him at odds with Democratic lawmakers like House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton. This has led to an unprecedented budget stalemate in the Capitol as neither side is willing to compromise. Now, after …

Evolution Of Eusociality In Ants Hymenoptera: Formicidae, Michael S. Holm
Evolution Of Eusociality In Ants Hymenoptera: Formicidae, Michael S. Holm
Honors Theses
Eusociality can be seen in a variety of insect families, including the ants (Formicidae). There is no clear understanding on how it evolved but it is well understood that transitions between social phases must happen. Several theories and hypothesis have been presented but none of them completely encapsulate the whole evolution of eusociality. Several studies on ants focus on different aspects of their evolution in the eusocial context and provide good supporting data. Two major models, Alternate Inclusive Fitness Model and Worker Behavior Model, are good blueprints for future research. As more data is collected and studies were done, more …

Reevaluating Essential Fatty Acid Nutrition In Florida Pompano, Trachinotus Carolinus, And Nile Tilapia, Oreochromis Niloticus, Christopher John Jackson
Theses
Aquaculture is currently the fastest growing sector of protein production, and is expected to overtake the harvest of wild fisheries. Limitations in nutrition, specifically fatty acid nutrition, are preventing even more dramatic growth of many species of commercial importance. Currently, much of the research involving fatty acids examines requirements as being correlated to thermal guilds (warm vs. cool water) or salinity tolerance (marine vs. freshwater). However, recent studies have revealed the potential for trophic level to be as much, if not more, influential in determining fatty acid requirements of a species. As such, two feeding trials were conducted to determine …

Comparative Assessment Of Agricultural Literacy In Selected K-5 Classrooms Employing Agriculture In The Classroom Methodologies: A Solomon Four-Group Analysis, Mary Margaret Fischer
Comparative Assessment Of Agricultural Literacy In Selected K-5 Classrooms Employing Agriculture In The Classroom Methodologies: A Solomon Four-Group Analysis, Mary Margaret Fischer
Dissertations
The significance of agriculture to future generations is unparalleled. The United Nations projects the global population to swell to 9.75 billion people by 2050, and to proliferate to 11.2 billion by 2100. The non-agricultural population has little to no understanding or comprehension of the complexities of sustaining a viable agricultural system. Agricultural literacy is an area often unseen and rarely discussed outside specific agricultural disciplines. Society does not view agriculture as being important, yet it is important that society be properly educated on issues in order to reach well-informed decisions and render prudent choices that impact the world around them. …

Reviewing Biochar Research And Introducing A Possible Classification System, Patricia G. Burns
Reviewing Biochar Research And Introducing A Possible Classification System, Patricia G. Burns
Research Papers
Biochar is the product of burning biomass, such as hardwood, rice hulls, bamboo, or even chicken litter, in a low- to no-oxygen environment. The result is a black carbon skeletal-like structure of the original biomass.
Research into biochar as a soil amendment has been influenced by the study of anthropogenic dark, richly fertile soils found in the Amazon rainforest where the native forest soil is acidic and low in fertility. Biochar research for amending agricultural soils is relatively new but there are strong indications that this practice can decrease the need for additional fertilizer and water inputs.
Biochar products will …
Predictors Of Land Value Sold At Auction In Richland, Edwards, And Lawrence Illinois Counties, Alexis N. Rothrock
Predictors Of Land Value Sold At Auction In Richland, Edwards, And Lawrence Illinois Counties, Alexis N. Rothrock
Research Papers
With increasing land prices and high inputs prices, it is essential for farmers and investors to understand the land-specific determinants that drive value. A growing population and less farmable acres increases the need for a better understanding of the variables that may impact selling price. By implementing the auction method to sell land, the landowner is thought to receive the market price for the land sold on a specific time, date, and location. However, there has been very little research that describes the relationship between land variables and selling price when land is sold at auction. This study explores the …

Characterization Of The Fad2 Gene Family In Soybean Reveals The Limitations Of Gel-Based Tilling In Genes With High Copy Number, Naoufal Lakhssassi, Zhou Zhou, Shiming Liu, Vincent Colantonio, Amer Abughazaleh, Khalid Meksem
Articles
Soybean seed oil typically contains 18–20% oleic acid. Increasing the content of oleic acid is beneficial for health and biodiesel production. Mutations in FAD2-1 genes have been reported to increase seed oleic acid content. A subset of 1,037 mutant families from a mutagenized soybean cultivar (cv.) Forrest population was screened using reverse genetics (TILLING) to identify mutations within FAD2 genes. Although no fad2 mutants were identified using gel-based TILLING, four fad2-1A and one fad2-1B mutants were identified to have high seed oleic acid content using forward genetic screening and subsequent target sequencing. TILLING has been successfully used as a non-transgenic …

Auditory Fatigue Model Applications To Predict Noise Induced Hearing Loss In Human And Chinchilla, Pengfei Sun, Daniel Fox, Kathleen Campbell, Jun Qin
Articles
Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) remains a severe health problem worldwide. Current noise metrics and models have assessment limitations on gradually developing NIHL (GDNIHL). In this study, we apply a complex velocity level (CVL) auditory fatigue model to quantitatively assess the impact of basilar membrane (BM) movement on GDNIHL. The transfer functions of chinchilla and human auditory systems, including the triple-path nonlinear (TRNL) filters to simulate the inner ear responses, are applied to obtain BM velocity distribution. Chinchilla and human experimental hearing loss data are used to validate the proposed CVL model’s effectiveness. The results reveal that the developed CVL …

Building Watershed Management Capacity In Nigeria: Expanding The Role Of Agriculture Colleges, John W. Groninger
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Developing countries face many critical social, agricultural, and natural resource-related issues where watershed management plays a prominent role. Short-term gains in productivity often occur at the expense of long term system resiliency needed to achieve sustainability. Post-secondary (tertiary) education institutions are underfunded and hampered by bureaucratic inertia limiting their relevance toward addressing emerging water resources concerns. As populations urbanize, rural constituencies continue to lose influence. Using the case of Samaru College of Agriculture, part of Ahmadu Bello University in north-central Nigeria, this paper identifies institutional challenges and suggests solutions to help similar institutions better address watershed management issues. Given current …
