Critical Assessment Of The Literature Regarding The Public Costs Of Roadway Damage Due To Fracking, Brent Ritzel
Critical Assessment Of The Literature Regarding The Public Costs Of Roadway Damage Due To Fracking, Brent Ritzel
Research Papers
Many government bodies have raised concerns regarding preservation of existing public roadway systems, which are simply not designed for that level and intensity of usage, from roadway degradation due to the impact of fracking-related truck traffic. This acceleration in roadway consumption imposes both immediate and long-term cost burdens on taxpayers, creates unfunded liabilities for the wide range of levels of government (jurisdictions) responsible for maintaining the roadways (from township to federal), and manifests a financial need that is not easily funded by traditional fee mechanisms.
This paper’s purpose is to provide a critical assessment of the literature regarding the public …
Oil Price Movements And Equity Returns: Evidence From The Gcc Countries, Fathi M. Mohalhal
Oil Price Movements And Equity Returns: Evidence From The Gcc Countries, Fathi M. Mohalhal
Dissertations
This study examines to what extent how oil movements differently affect equity returns in general and sectoral levels of the GCC countries stock markets. Modeling the equity returns volatility requires using GARCH-type models. These models help to explore the pronounced differences of the conditional variance structures across sectors and markets. Chapter 1 compares the effects of changes in oil price return and its volatility on equity returns and volatility across sectors. The findings of this chapter show that despite the GCC states dependency on oil revenues, equity market performance at the sectoral level do not exactly associate with oil movements. …

Markerless Facial Motion Capture, Sara J. Saito
Markerless Facial Motion Capture, Sara J. Saito
Research Papers
With the ever-rising capabilities of motion capture systems; this project explored markerless facial motion capture programs using the Kinect Sensor for Xbox. Many systems today still use markers and end up retargeting after a motion capture recording. This project used a simpler process of setting up and being able to display the effects live. An off-the-shelf system was built using a computer, a Kinect Sensor, a plug-in from Brekel, and Autodesk software. The first goal was to create a process that was able to capture and project live facial motion for fewer than $500 USD. Anything over $500 USD was …

Energy-Efficient Spectrum Sensing For Cognitive Radio Enabled Remote State Estimation Over Wireless Channels, Xianghui Cao, Xiangwei Zhou, Lu Liu, Yu Cheng
Energy-Efficient Spectrum Sensing For Cognitive Radio Enabled Remote State Estimation Over Wireless Channels, Xianghui Cao, Xiangwei Zhou, Lu Liu, Yu Cheng
Articles
The performance of remote estimation over wireless channels is strongly affected by sensor data losses due to interference. Although the impact of interference can be alleviated by applying cognitive radio technique which features in spectrum sensing and transmitting data only on clear channels, the introduction of spectrum sensing incurs extra energy expenditure. In this paper, we investigate the problem of energy-efficient spectrum sensing for remotely estimating the state of a general linear dynamic system, and formulate an optimization problem which minimizes the total sensor energy consumption while guaranteeing a desired level of estimation performance. We model the problem as a …

Research Papers
ABSTRACT
Statistics in sports have increasingly become such an important factor, yet at the collegiate Division I level all the statistics are generated using an antiquated software called StatCrew. The software unbelievably still uses a DOS platform and is the standard for all sports statistics reporting among Division I level athletic programs in the United States.
The objectives of this study are to: (1) gauge customer satisfaction and trust in the StatCrew brand; (2) to investigate users needs in sports statistics reporting and how the current system should be improved; and (3), to gauge whether or not dissatisfaction is high …

Gene Expression, Protein Function And Pathways Of Arabidopsis Thaliana Responding To Silver Nanoparticles In Comparison To Silver Ions, Cold, Salt, Drought, And Heat, Eisa Kohan-Baghkheirati, Jane C. Geisler-Lee
Publications
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been widely used in industry due to their unique physical and chemical properties. However, AgNPs have caused environmental concerns. To understand the risks of AgNPs, Arabidopsis microarray data for AgNP, Ag+, cold, salt, heat and drought stresses were analyzed. Up- and down-regulated genes of more than two-fold expression change were compared, while the encoded proteins of shared and unique genes between stresses were subjected to differential enrichment analyses. AgNPs affected the fewest genes (575) in the Arabidopsis genome, followed by Ag+ (1010), heat (1374), drought (1435), salt (4133) and cold (6536). More genes …

Assessing The Initial Impact Of The Michael Brown Shooting And Police And Public Responses To It On St Louis County Residents' Views About Police, Tammy R. Kochel
Reports
A panel survey of nearly four hundred St. Louis County, MO residents both before and after the shooting death of Michael Brown reveal a dramatic impact of that incident and the civil unrest and police handling of the unrest on residents perceptions of police. African American residents, on average, supported the public’s response to the police shooting but disagreed with the police response to the protests, looting and riots that followed, while nonblack residents’ views were just the opposite. Additionally, in the time immediately following the shooting, African American residents’ trust in police procedural justice and perceptions of police legitimacy …

Four Eras Of The Twentieth Century Family: The Female Role Within The Family And The Female Role Within Higher Education, Rachel Smith
Research Papers
This research paper addresses the fluid nature of the American family structure and how that structure changes over time. Sometimes the family structure progresses forward and makes positive gains in equality between husband and wife and in some instances regresses back. Many facets of American life have influences on the structure of the family. Government control and governmental freedom, no education and higher education, economic prosperity and economic downturn, the United States and those who live within it are always in motion.
Throughout the twentieth century, the changing family structures, caused by changes within American society, fit into four distinct …

Alternative Splicing Of Mef2c Pre-Mrna Controls Its Activity In Normal Myogenesis And Promotes Tumorigenicity In Rhabdomyosarcoma Cells., Meiling Zhang, Bo Zhu, Judith Davie
Articles
Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in children. Many cellular disruptions contribute to the progression of this pediatric cancer, including aberrant alternative splicing. The MEF2 family of transcription factors regulates many developmental programs, including myogenesis. MEF2 gene transcripts are subject to alternate splicing to generate protein isoforms with divergent functions. We found that MEF2Cα1 was the ubiquitously expressed isoform that exhibited no myogenic activity and that MEF2Cα2, the muscle-specific MEF2C isoform, was required for efficient differentiation. We showed that exon α in MEF2C was aberrantly alternatively spliced in RMS cells, with the ratio of α2/α1 highly down-regulated …

This research describes the key characteristics of campus food gardens and investigates their contribution to overall campus sustainability. An email-survey of fifty-two campus garden managers in North America provided quantitative and qualitative data for this analysis. It was found that gardens are often student initiated and managed, but also bring together diverse stakeholders from the campus and community. These sites increase sustainability awareness as well as overall institutional sustainability. University food gardens provide formal education that overcomes many institutional barriers to interdisciplinary programs. Informal education also occurs at these sites through experiential learning which leads to greater environmental awareness among …
