Editorial Policy, Religious Freedom Acts And Denying Access To Same-Sex Marriage, Leah N. Williams Dec 2016

Editorial Policy, Religious Freedom Acts And Denying Access To Same-Sex Marriage, Leah N. Williams

Research Papers

Generations of readers have bought and shared space inside the wedding pages in newspapers, and the introduction of same-sex wedding announcements has not always been granted immediate access. Although polls show same-sex marriage has become more generally accepted by society, the lifestyle and complete inclusion have been perceived as being directly challenged by newspaper policies and legislative efforts to pass religious freedom restoration acts. This paper explores the history of the wedding lifestyles pages, the evolution of media coverage surrounding lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues and the recent wave of a religious freedom restoration act in Indiana and …

A Classic Question Revisited In Red-Winged Blackbirds: Disentangling Confounding Hypotheses Surrounding Parental Investment Theory And Nest Defense Intensity, Justin J. Shew, Jorista Van Der Merwe, Eric M. Schauber, Briana K. Tallitsch, Clayton K. Nielsen Nov 2016

A Classic Question Revisited In Red-Winged Blackbirds: Disentangling Confounding Hypotheses Surrounding Parental Investment Theory And Nest Defense Intensity, Justin J. Shew, Jorista Van Der Merwe, Eric M. Schauber, Briana K. Tallitsch, Clayton K. Nielsen

Publications

The pattern of increased nest-defense effort over the course of a nesting season could result from 3 distinct (albeit non-exclusive) mechanisms: increased value of offspring to parents with progression towards independence (parental-investment theory), decreased opportunity for renesting (renesting-potential hypothesis), or decreased perceived costs of defense after repeated encounters with human observers (positive-reinforcement hypothesis). To gauge relative empirical support for each of these mechanisms, we disentangle these 3 often-confounded hypotheses using multi-model inference with mixed-model ordinal regression applied to an extensive red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) nesting data set (4,518 monitoring visits to 1,330 nests). Parent aggression was rated on …

It is estimated that 5.9% of all human deaths are attributable to alcohol consumption and that the harmful use of ethanol ranks among the top five risk factors for causing disease, disability, and death worldwide. Ethanol is known to disrupt phospholipid packing and promote membrane hemifusion at lipid bilayers. With the exception of mitochondria involved in hormone synthesis, the sterol content of mitochondrial membranes is low. As membranes that are low in cholesterol have increased membrane fluidity and are the most easily disordered by ethanol, we hypothesize that mitochondria are sensitive targets for ethanol damage. HeLa cells were exposed to …

United States governmental agencies, departments, and affiliates, are increasingly making 3D printable models available to the general public online. On March 20, 2014, a memorandum was sent out to United States executive departments and agencies about improving access to the government’s scientific collections (Holdren, 2014). This memorandum, from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), not only addressed physical collections, but specifically mentioned digital 3D models. On the White House’s blog, several reasons were given for making these collections more accessible including the idea that these collections are “… treasure troves of information ripe for exploration and …

We The People: Analyzing The 7th Circuit’S Decision In United States V. Meza-Rodriguez, 798 F.3d 664 (7th Cir. 2015), Jennifer Paulson Oct 2016

We The People: Analyzing The 7th Circuit’S Decision In United States V. Meza-Rodriguez, 798 F.3d 664 (7th Cir. 2015), Jennifer Paulson

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Following District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. City of Chicago, Second Amendment jurisprudence drastically expanded as individuals began challenging state and federal regulations that burden the right to keep and bear arms.  In United States v. Meza-Rodriguez, the Seventh Circuit faced a particularly controversial issue when an undocumented immigrant challenged a federal statute that categorically banned undocumented immigrants from exercising Second Amendment rights.  Although several other circuits had analyzed the same issue, the Seventh Circuit was the first to hold that undocumented immigrants have Second Amendment rights.  However, the court also upheld the constitutionality of the …

Structure-Function Relationships Of Archaeal Cbf5 During In Vivo Rna-Guided Pseudouridylation., Mrinmoyee Majumder, Michael S Bosmeny, Ramesh Gupta Oct 2016

Structure-Function Relationships Of Archaeal Cbf5 During In Vivo Rna-Guided Pseudouridylation., Mrinmoyee Majumder, Michael S Bosmeny, Ramesh Gupta

Articles

In Eukarya and Archaea, in addition to protein-only pseudouridine (Ψ) synthases, complexes containing one guide RNA and four proteins can also produce Ψ. Cbf5 protein is the Ψ synthase in the complex. Previously, we showed that Ψ's at positions 1940, 1942, and 2605 of Haloferax volcanii 23S rRNA are absent in a cbf5-deleted strain, and a plasmid-borne copy of cbf5 can rescue the synthesis of these Ψ's. Based on published reports of the structure of archaeal Cbf5 complexed with other proteins and RNAs, we identified several potential residues and structures in H. volcanii Cbf5, which were expected to play important …

Come Back With A Warrant: Protecting The Fourth Amendment Rights Of Probationers From Warrantless Searches Absent Their Consent As A Condition Of Probation, Jennifer Lancaster Oct 2016

Come Back With A Warrant: Protecting The Fourth Amendment Rights Of Probationers From Warrantless Searches Absent Their Consent As A Condition Of Probation, Jennifer Lancaster

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

As prisons become overpopulated, sentencing alternatives, such as probation, are becoming more common throughout the United States.  The increase in probationers has created new issues for courts to decide.  One of the most prevalent issues is the consent to warrantless searches by probationers.  As a requirement of probation, probationers must follow a set of conditions.  This Comment explains whether the “reasonableness standard” should apply if a probationer has not consented to warrantless searches as a condition of probation.

This Comment discusses the circuit split between the Eleventh and Fourth Circuits on the issue of warrantless searches.  The Eleventh Circuit allows …

Heard It Through The Grapevine - Social Network Analysis Of A Hydrology Class, E. Annette Hernandez, Venkatesh Uddameri Aug 2016

Heard It Through The Grapevine - Social Network Analysis Of A Hydrology Class, E. Annette Hernandez, Venkatesh Uddameri

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Social network analysis (SNA) was investigated as an efficient way to understand the dynamics behind collaborative endeavors and group formation in project based courses. The SNA was applied to a junior level undergraduate engineering hydrology class with two sections taught by two professors with varying levels of structure. It was found that students tended to use formal sources of information (i.e., professor, teaching assistant, textbook, or class notes); however, the use depended on the amount of structure in the class. More independent students did not collaborate in assigned groups, preferring to self-select study groups. Furthermore, the less structured class created …

Water And Society: Interdisciplinary Education In Natural Resources, Laszlo J. Kulcsar, Joseph A. Aistrup, Thomas Bulatewicz, Jeffrey M. Peterson, Stephen M. Welch, David R. Steward Aug 2016

Water And Society: Interdisciplinary Education In Natural Resources, Laszlo J. Kulcsar, Joseph A. Aistrup, Thomas Bulatewicz, Jeffrey M. Peterson, Stephen M. Welch, David R. Steward

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Natural resource management and education must account for both the natural and human components of a complex system, yet examples of such interdisciplinary approaches are still relatively rare, especially in education. This study discusses a graduate seminar on water management, developed from an interdisciplinary National Science Foundation (NSF) grant. The seminar applied constructivist pedagogy which is not only best suited for interdisciplinary work, but also allows flexibility to redesign the course components and deliverables after each evaluation cycle. While the seminar was a successful experiment, several challenges remain when implementing such courses. These challenges include not only the organization and …

Deliberating On Missouri River Water Diversions In Congressional Committee Hearings, Sarah Michaels, Mike Gruszczynski Aug 2016

Deliberating On Missouri River Water Diversions In Congressional Committee Hearings, Sarah Michaels, Mike Gruszczynski

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

We examine the discursive influence of competing interest groups and how and when U.S. federal legislators use empirical evidence to consider Missouri River diversion projects originating in the relief, recovery, and reform thinking behind President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. Twelve U.S. Congressional committee hearings that occurred between 1944 and 2006 are content analyzed to demonstrate the nature of instrumental arguments in legislative deliberations. Members of Congress in favor of diversion projects used more economic-based, instrumental arguments than interest group representatives sharing their views while members of Congress opposed to the diversion projects consistently used less science-based, instrumental arguments than …

Irrigation Technology Choice As Adaptation To Climate Change In The Western United States, George Frisvold, Ting Bai Aug 2016

Irrigation Technology Choice As Adaptation To Climate Change In The Western United States, George Frisvold, Ting Bai

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Several commentators have suggested adoption of improved irrigation will be important for agricultural adaptation to climate change. This study used data from a special tabulation of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm and Ranch Irrigation Survey to examine how climate and other factors influence the choice of sprinkler versus gravity-flow irrigation across 17 western states. Because studies of irrigation technology adoption often concentrate on small geographic areas with the same climate, few have estimated effects of climate on irrigation technology choice. Results suggest sprinkler irrigation is a more promising climate adaptation in areas that are relatively cooler and …

Building Watershed Management Capacity In Nigeria: Expanding The Role Of Agriculture Colleges, John W. Groninger Aug 2016

Building Watershed Management Capacity In Nigeria: Expanding The Role Of Agriculture Colleges, John W. Groninger

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Developing countries face many critical social, agricultural, and natural resource-related issues where watershed management plays a prominent role. Short-term gains in productivity often occur at the expense of long term system resiliency needed to achieve sustainability. Post-secondary (tertiary) education institutions are underfunded and hampered by bureaucratic inertia limiting their relevance toward addressing emerging water resources concerns. As populations urbanize, rural constituencies continue to lose influence. Using the case of Samaru College of Agriculture, part of Ahmadu Bello University in north-central Nigeria, this paper identifies institutional challenges and suggests solutions to help similar institutions better address watershed management issues. Given current …

Cross Court View: Comparison Of Body Image During Competition, Timothy M. Kelly Aug 2016

Cross Court View: Comparison Of Body Image During Competition, Timothy M. Kelly

Research Papers

There are many studies on body image but few focus on the body image of athletes. Further, there are few studies on the effects of appearance on athletic performance. Past studies have focused on internalization or body image dissatisfaction. None have gathered data about competition to see if body image and appearance of competitors effects athletic performance. Using an 18 question adapted Likert survey and two qualitative questions we explored whether appearance of the other competitors has an impact on athletic performance. The study was conducted using 50 division I female athletes from the softball, volleyball, tennis, swimming and diving, …

We encourage all biology educators to consider becoming agents of change, and focus on helpful resources and practical suggestions to help ABT readers take the plunge (or at least get their feet wet) into the welcoming waters of …

Doing Spontaneity, Nicolas J. Zaunbrecher Aug 2016

Doing Spontaneity, Nicolas J. Zaunbrecher

Dissertations

This dissertation considers the rhetorical use of the term “spontaneity” and action affiliated with it from the perspective of ethnomethodology, as a dynamic social practice emergent from concrete interactions among people. I first consider a variety of existing operationalizations of “spontaneity” in academic research from the perspective of what is ethnomethodologically accomplished by these operationalizations, i.e., what questions do they answer or attempt to answer? I then turn to a detailed rhetorical analysis of the term “spontaneity” as an ideograph in improvisational theatre, a social practice in which enactment of spontaneity is treated as criterial to identity and recognition of …

The Effect Of Stereoscopic Three-Dimensional Images On Recall Of Second Language Vocabulary, Regina Kaplan-Rakowski Aug 2016

The Effect Of Stereoscopic Three-Dimensional Images On Recall Of Second Language Vocabulary, Regina Kaplan-Rakowski

Dissertations

The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the effect of stereoscopic three-dimensional (S3D) images on productive and receptive recall of foreign language vocabulary. S3D images are highly-realistic and differ from non-stereoscopic three-dimensional (NS3D) images in that they provide the impression of the added third dimension of depth. This within-subject study exposed the participants (N = 82) in a controlled setting to a series of carefully designed and randomly distributed NS3D and S3D images. The subjects were then given immediate productive and receptive tests of foreign language vocabulary items that were represented by NS3D and S3D images. Quantitative data …

Women's Work: Stitching New Identity Narratives In Conflict And Post-Conflict Settings, Arielle Semmel Aug 2016

Women's Work: Stitching New Identity Narratives In Conflict And Post-Conflict Settings, Arielle Semmel

Dissertations

Here, I bring communication theories into conversation with peace and conflict scholarship. Specifically, I explore how the ways in which women narrate their experiences of violent conflict through sewing collectives can inform conflict transformation work. I engage in this exploration within the framework of narrative theory, using Kenneth Burke’s dramatistic pentad to analyze the narratives presented in a selection of textile pieces created by women in Chile, South Africa, and Northern Ireland. I situate this project within literature pertaining to feminist approaches to rhetoric, discussions of bridgework in identity negotiation from intercultural communication, concerns related to conflict transformation, and work …

Unbiasing Information Search And Processing Through Personal And Social Identity Mechanisms, Benjamin A. Lyons Aug 2016

Unbiasing Information Search And Processing Through Personal And Social Identity Mechanisms, Benjamin A. Lyons

Dissertations

Group commitments such as partisanship and religion can bias the way individuals seek information and weigh evidence. This psychological process can lead to distorted views of reality and polarization between opposing social groups. Substantial research confirms the existence and persistence of numerous identity-driven divides in society, but means of attenuating them remain elusive. However, because identity-protective cognition is driven by a need to maintain global and not domain specific integrity, researchers have found that affirming an unrelated core aspect of the self can eliminate the need for ego defense and result in more evenhanded evaluation. This study proposes a competing …

From Blackbirds To Lynyrd Skynyrd: Exploring The Definition And Use Of Folk Music In Clarinet Literature, Calla M. Olson Jul 2016

From Blackbirds To Lynyrd Skynyrd: Exploring The Definition And Use Of Folk Music In Clarinet Literature, Calla M. Olson

Research Papers

This document explores the definition and use of folk music in four important pieces of clarinet literature: “Abyss of the Birds” by Olivier Messiaen, Folk Songs by Eric Mandat, Freebirds by Scott McAllister, and Sonata for Clarinet and Piano in B-flat major, Op. 107 by Max Reger. Each of these pieces utilizes another piece or source of music in addition to the composer’s original material, and this paper will determine whether these sources constitute a use of folk music in each case. The different method by which each composer uses the external source material will also be examined. A general …

Understanding Retention Through The Use Of Student-University Digital/Social Media Interaction, Dwayne D. Moore Jr Jul 2016

Understanding Retention Through The Use Of Student-University Digital/Social Media Interaction, Dwayne D. Moore Jr

Research Papers

Student retention is one of the most pressing issues in higher education across the United States. Difficulty retaining students has begun to cause concern for families looking to further their educational endeavors. Students find that college is too expensive, or that the ability to live at a destination school causes problems within families – distance, time-management or even that going to college is stressful and leads to a student not wanting to finish. Studies have shown that first year students and higher degree by research students tend to be more susceptible to attrition. Understanding that a student has to have …
