Multigeneic Qtl: The Laccase Encoded Within The Soybean Rfs2/Rhg1 Locus Inferred To Underlie Part Of The Dual Resistance To Cyst Nematode And Sudden Death Syndrome, M Javed Iqbal, R Ahsan, Jawad Afzal, A Jamai, K Meksem, Hany A. El- Shemy, David A. Lightfoot

Articles

Multigeneic QTL present significant problems to analysis. Resistance to soybean (Glycine max (L) Merr.) sudden death syndrome (SDS) caused by Fusarium virguliforme was partly underlain by QRfs2 that was clustered with, or pleiotropic to, the multigeneic rhg1 locus providing resistance to soybean cyst nematode (SCN; Heterodera glycines ). A group of five genes were found between the two markers that delimited the Rfs2/rhg1 locus. One of the five genes was predicted to encode an unusual diphenol oxidase (laccase; EC 1.10.3.2). The aim of this study was to characterize this member of the soybean laccase gene-family and explore its involvement in …

Establishment Of The Regeneration System For Vicia Faba L., Shimaa Bahgat, Omer A. Shabban, Osama El-Shihy, David A. Lightfoot, Hany A. El- Shemy

Articles

A reliable regeneration system for faba bean has been difficult to establish and therefore, the genetic improvement of Vicia faba L. was delayed. The paper describes a method of somatic embryo induction in callus of V. faba . Two Egyptian faba bean cultivars 'Giza 2' and '24 Hyto' were used. Callus was induced from epicotyls and shoot tips cultured on MS or Gamborg medium supplemented with 3% sucrose and 0.025% (w/v) for each of ascorbic and citric acid, 0.8% agar and different concentrations of 10 mg/l BAP, 0.5 mg/l of each NAA and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (M1) and 1 mg/l BAP …

The Effect Of Presidential Campaigning: The 2002 And 2004 Midterm Senate Elections, Scott D. Mcclurg, Jessica Bryan Jan 2009

The Effect Of Presidential Campaigning: The 2002 And 2004 Midterm Senate Elections, Scott D. Mcclurg, Jessica Bryan

Working Papers

Many scholars address the indirect effects presidents have on midterm election results by examining the “midterm loss” phenomenon, presidential coattails, negative voting, and the “referendum” thesis. However, very little research investigates the direct effect that presidential campaigning has on congressional candidates prospects for victory. This study adds to this growing literature by exploring presidential campaigning in the 2002 and 2006 U.S. Senate midterm elections. Our investigation makes two important contributions to previous research. First, we explicitly model the strategic decisions presidents make in visiting states in order to get a better estimate of presidential impact that accounts for selection bias. …

Social Expertise And The Foundations Of Political Involvement, Scott D. Mcclurg Jan 2009

Social Expertise And The Foundations Of Political Involvement, Scott D. Mcclurg

Working Papers

The correlation between social ties and political participation has been evident for some time, though very little attention is devoted to examining the causal mechanisms producing this relationship. This paper moves the literature in this direction by examining how an important feature of social networks -- levels of political expertise -- affect the attitudes underlying involvement. After outlining a model for explaining the relationship between social expertise and involvement, analysis of the 2000 American National Election Study shows that people who are in sophisticated social networks are less likely to be ambivalent about candidates and more likely to feel efficacious. …

Music Score Approval Plans In Research Libraries: A Survey Of Librarian Satisfaction With And Without Approval Plans, Elizabeth J. Cox, Roger Cross, John Ballestro

Articles

In this study, the researchers submitted a music score approval plan survey to all ARL libraries. Two surveys were created, one for libraries with music score approval plans, one for those without. Forty-four surveys were returned. The authors’ purpose was to analyze and discuss the survey results, incorporating elements of the scholarly work preceding this study. Discussions, roundtables, and listservs participated in by music librarians over the years formed the basis of the topic at hand. The goal was to ascertain whether these discussions and underlying assumptions of approval plans held true to the real world.

“He Would Kill Me With His Penis”: Genocidal Rape In Rwanda As A State Crime, Christopher W. Mullins Jan 2009

“He Would Kill Me With His Penis”: Genocidal Rape In Rwanda As A State Crime, Christopher W. Mullins

Articles

Only recently have critical criminologists begun a systematic exploration of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity as state crimes (Kramer and Michalowski 2005; Mullins and Rothe 2008; Haveman and Smeulers 2008). This paper contributes to that growing literature through examining the nature and dynamics of sexual violence as it occurred during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. It draws upon empirical examination of events depicted in transcripts of trials held before the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. It qualitatively examines the role of leaders in producing mass sexual assaults. It explores how sexual mutilations were more intense expressions of what the …

Toward A Criminology Of International Criminal Law: An Integrated Theory Of International Criminal Violations, Dawn L. Rothe, Christopher W. Mullins Jan 2009

Toward A Criminology Of International Criminal Law: An Integrated Theory Of International Criminal Violations, Dawn L. Rothe, Christopher W. Mullins

Articles

Violations of international criminal law (i.e., genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes) are a common occurrence around the globe. One need only to read international news, visit intra‐governmental (e.g., United Nations or the International Committee Red Cross), or nongovernmental organizations (e.g., Human Rights Watch or Amnesty International) to be exposed to the vast numbers of crimes of states, paramilitaries, and/or militias. Nonetheless, there has been relatively little attention paid to these types of offenses by criminologists. While there have been developments in creating typologies (Smeulers, 2008) and predictive models for genocide (Harf, 2005), due to the complexities and various …

The Lasting Effect Of Civic Talk On Civic Participation: Evidence From A Panel Study, Casey A. Klofstad Jan 2009

The Lasting Effect Of Civic Talk On Civic Participation: Evidence From A Panel Study, Casey A. Klofstad

Working Papers

Extant research shows that individuals who discuss politics and current events with their peers also participate more actively in civil society. However, this correlation is not sufficient evidence of causation due to a number of analytical biases. To address this problem, data were collected through a panel study conducted on students at a large public university in the Midwestern United States. These data show that discussing politics and current events caused these students to participate in civic activities during their first year of college. A follow-up study conducted on the same population during their fourth year of college shows that …

Healing The Rift? Social Networks And Reconciliation Between Obama And Clinton Delegates In 2008, Michael Heaney, Seth Masket, Joanne Miller, Dara Strolovich Jan 2009

Healing The Rift? Social Networks And Reconciliation Between Obama And Clinton Delegates In 2008, Michael Heaney, Seth Masket, Joanne Miller, Dara Strolovich

Working Papers

Which factors allowed the Democratic Party to heal the rift created by the 2008 presidential nominating campaign? Using original data from surveys of 449 pledged delegates at the 2008 Democratic National Convention, this research examines the conditions under which the delegates for one candidate embrace the opposing candidate. Specifically, when do delegates for Barack Obama embrace Hillary Clinton, and vice versa? The results demonstrate that Clinton delegates’ network centrality in the convention caucus network exacerbates, rather than heals, the rift in the party. Clinton delegates’ friendship networks perpetuate the rift when they are homophilous, but contribute to healing when they …

Human Security Networks In The Indian Ocean Tsunami, Annelies Z. Kamran Jan 2009

Human Security Networks In The Indian Ocean Tsunami, Annelies Z. Kamran

Working Papers

This paper uses the methods of social network analysis to discover the structural patterns of cooperation that arose in response to a global human security problem. It does this by mapping compulsory and institutional power relations among actors of the construction of a human security transnational cooperative response network—the response to the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 26, 2004. By mapping the relationships at the system level of world politics, including individual states as well as intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), transnational nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and/or think tanks, and transnational corporations (TNCs), this paper finds a third relation among these actors, namely, …

Living In A Battleground: Presidential Campaigns And Fundamental Predictors Of Vote Choice, Scott D. Mcclurg, Thomas M. Holbrook Jan 2009

Living In A Battleground: Presidential Campaigns And Fundamental Predictors Of Vote Choice, Scott D. Mcclurg, Thomas M. Holbrook

Publications

Little evidence links the strategic decisions of campaigns to individual-level voting behavior. Yet for campaigns to matter in the way that experts argue, exposure to campaigns must also matter so there should be observable differences in the structure of vote choice between battleground and non-battleground states. Combining presidential campaign data with the Senate Election Study, we show that intense campaigning can activate factors like race, ideology, partisanship, and presidential approval. We find that the campaigns affected different variables in 1988 than in 1992, which we hypothesize is the consequence of campaign messages.

By far the most newsworthy section of the survey, released October …

Accurate Cylindrical-Coordinate Numerical Models For The Analysis Of Hydrologic Tests, John Edward Keller Jan 2009

Accurate Cylindrical-Coordinate Numerical Models For The Analysis Of Hydrologic Tests, John Edward Keller

Dissertations

Analytical solutions to well hydraulic problems have restrictive assumptions that often do not match real world conditions. Although numerical models more closely match reality, they either ran too slowly to be practical or lacked accuracy because of coarse grid spacing and large time steps. Advances in computer power over the last few decades now allow for accurate, fast numerical models that handle complex flow systems. The purpose of this dissertation was to develop flexible and accurate numerical modeling codes for the simulation of hydrologic tests. One of these numerical modeling codes, the Slug Test Simulator (STS), was designed for the …

The Prospects For Cyberocracy (Revisited), David Ronfeldt, Danielle Varda Dec 2008

The Prospects For Cyberocracy (Revisited), David Ronfeldt, Danielle Varda

Working Papers

The deepening of the information age will alter the nature of the state so thoroughly that something new emerges: "cyberocracy." While it is too early to say precisely what a cyberocracy will look like, the outcomes will include new kinds of democratic, totalitarian, and hybrid governments, along with new kinds of state-society relations. Thus, optimism about the information revolution should be tempered by an anticipation of its potential dark side. This paper reiterates the view of the cyberocracy concept as first stated in 1992, and then offers a postscript for 2008. It speculates that information-age societies will develop new sensory …

A 60 Ghz Wireless Network For Enabling Uncompressed Video Communication, Harkirat Singh, Jisung Oh, Changyeul Kweon, Xiangping Qin, Huai-Rong Shao, Chiu Ngo

Articles

Uncompressed high-definition video streaming over wireless personal area networks is a challenging problem because of the high data rate requirement and channel variations. With the advances in RF technology and the huge bandwidth available worldwide in the 57–66 GHz millimeter-wave unlicensed spectrum, mmWave WPANs that can support multigigabit transmission are being developed. However, compared to low-frequency signals (2.4 or 5 GHz), mmWave signals are more fragile; indeed, the propagation losses are significantly higher. In this article we present an mmWave system for supporting uncompressed HD video up to 3 Gb/s. The system includes various efficient error protection and concealment schemes …

An aboriginal tribe called ‘Yanadi’ dwells in a few tribal pockets on Sriharikota Island. However, a few aged tribal men are still able to furnish information regarding their traditional practices of medicines and recipes. There is an urgent need to conserve their herbal wealth and preserve their traditional knowledge for the benefit of modern society. It is with this background, along with the need to give a primary …

Reviewing Digital Scholarship: The Need For Discipline-Based Peer Review, Jeanne Glaubitz Cross Dec 2008

Reviewing Digital Scholarship: The Need For Discipline-Based Peer Review, Jeanne Glaubitz Cross

Articles

Digital scholarship connects scholarly research to students and the public in nontraditional ways. Authors present research in a digital form, which may include links to primary source material and teaching guides. In this format, design and accessibility are important, and unfortunately, those quick to dismiss all digital work as teaching or outreach can overlook the research element. The confusion over what digital scholarship is and how to evaluate it raises questions that can affect promotion and tenure decisions in academic institutions. This paper will examine issues surrounding the availability of peer review for digital scholarship, especially in the field of …
