Sexual And Reproductive Decisions And Experiences Of Women Living With Hiv/Aids In Abuja, Nigeria, Stella C. Iwuagwu

Dissertations

Over 60% of those living with HIV/AIDS are women, the majority of them in their sexual and reproductive years (UNAIDS, 2006). With antiretroviral (ARV) drugs, most of them are living longer and healthier to engage in sexual and reproductive activities (WHO, 2006). This study explored the sexual and reproductive decisions and experiences of women living with HIV/AIDS (WLWHA) in Abuja, Nigeria. Only those who became pregnant and had a child after being diagnosed with HIV participated in the study.

The study was an interview based qualitative research. The design of the interview guide was informed by the PEN-3 Model (Airhihenbuwa, …

There Are Multiple Contributors To The Verbal Short-Term Memory Deficit In Children With Developmental Reading Disabilities., Michelle Y. Kibby Sep 2009

There Are Multiple Contributors To The Verbal Short-Term Memory Deficit In Children With Developmental Reading Disabilities., Michelle Y. Kibby

Publications

Prior research has put forth at least four possible contributors to the verbal short-term memory (VSTM) deficit in children with developmental reading disabilities (RD): poor phonological awareness that affects phonological coding into VSTM, a less effective phonological store, slow articulation rate, and fewer/poorer quality long-term memory (LTM) representations. This project is among the first to test the four suppositions in one study. Participants included 18 children with RD and 18 controls. VSTM was assessed using Baddeley's model of the phonological loop. Findings suggest all four suppositions are correct, depending upon the type of material utilized. Children with RD performed comparably …

Medicinal Plants Of Sewa River Catchment Area In The Northwest Himalaya And Its Implication For Conservation, Mahroof Khan, Satish Kumar, Irshad Ahmed Hamal Sep 2009

Medicinal Plants Of Sewa River Catchment Area In The Northwest Himalaya And Its Implication For Conservation, Mahroof Khan, Satish Kumar, Irshad Ahmed Hamal

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Himalaya is known as an abode of medicinal plants. Climate and topographic diversity of the Sewa catchment area provides a variety of habitats for the luxuriant growth of potential medicinal plant species. Many of these are used by locals in remote and inaccessible areas. Continuous overexploitation, revival of the use of herbal drugs and degradation of the habitats has brought medicinal plants on priority for conservation. Keeping in view these aspects, the medicinal plant wealth of Sewa catchment has been explored and assessed by interaction with the local inhabitants and after surveying the literature. The results have been compiled in …

527 Committees And The Political Party Network, Seth E. Masket, Richard Skinner, David Dulio Sep 2009

527 Committees And The Political Party Network, Seth E. Masket, Richard Skinner, David Dulio

Working Papers

We investigate the links between 527s and other political organizations through the employment histories of 527 staff. We find that 527s are highly central to modern political party networks and are in positions to facilitate coordination within a party and to employ key party personnel. Further, we find important differences between the networks charted out by the two major parties. The Republican Party, the majority party during the period under study, had a more hierarchical network than the Democratic Party did.

The Beltway Network: A Network Analysis Of Lobbyists' Donations To Members Of Congress, Gregory Koger, Jennifer N. Victor Aug 2009

The Beltway Network: A Network Analysis Of Lobbyists' Donations To Members Of Congress, Gregory Koger, Jennifer N. Victor

Working Papers

This paper develops a network approach to lobbying. We posit that the building blocks of the lobbying game are relationships, with lobbyists and legislators benefitting from bonds based on familiarity and mutual interest. Using data on contributions from lobbyists to legislators in the 2006 electoral cycle, we identify key dimensions of this network. We find that legislators are more likely to receive donations from the same lobbyists if they are from the same party (in the Senate), state, or committee; if they are both vulnerable in the next election; and the number of common donors increases the more agreement there …

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

In vitro antimicrobial and chemical properties of petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts of Pueraria tuberosa were evaluated. Among the test samples ethyl acetate extract showed pronounced antimicrobial activity, while ethanol extract exhibited the least activity and petroleum ether extract failed to inhibit the test pathogens. Preliminary phytochemical analysis of extracts revealed the presence of antimicrobial compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, coumarins, volatile oils and glycosides. The phenolic compounds and flavonoids were abundant in ethyl acetate extract when compared to other extracts. The broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity of ethyl acetate extract may be due to the presence of …
