Privacy In Conflict: How Implicit Behavior Norms Inform Expectations Of Privacy, Ryan Malphurs Oct 2009

Privacy In Conflict: How Implicit Behavior Norms Inform Expectations Of Privacy, Ryan Malphurs

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This paper examines how online participants construct privacy within the digital age by investigating the tools participants implement to assemble the social boundaries of privacy. Group participants vary in their understandings of privacy, creating the potential for privacy violations that may impact both the online as well as offline community. Building upon previous online studies of privacy, this paper informs how group participants construct a contextual understanding of privacy, and how a violation of privacy impacts both offline and online interaction within groups and organizations. Open-ended surveys, public email discussions, personal interviews, and a focus group help explain how organizational …

Long-Wavelength Structural Anomalies In Jammed Systems, Leo Silbert, Moises Silbert Oct 2009

Long-Wavelength Structural Anomalies In Jammed Systems, Leo Silbert, Moises Silbert

Publications

The structural properties of static, jammed packings of monodisperse spheres in the vicinity of the jamming transition are investigated using large-scale computer simulations. At small wave number k, we argue that the anomalous behavior in the static structure factor, S(k)similar to k, is consequential of an excess of low-frequency, collective excitations seen in the vibrational spectrum. This anomalous feature becomes more pronounced closest to the jamming transition, such that S(0)-> 0 at the transition point. We introduce an appropriate dispersion relation that accounts for these phenomena that leads us to relate these structural features to characteristic length scales associated with …

Networking The Parties: A Comparative Study Of Democratic And Republican Convention Delegates In 2008, Seth E. Masket, Michael T. Heaney, Joanne M. Miller, Dara Z. Strolovich Oct 2009

Networking The Parties: A Comparative Study Of Democratic And Republican Convention Delegates In 2008, Seth E. Masket, Michael T. Heaney, Joanne M. Miller, Dara Z. Strolovich

Working Papers

Parties‐as‐networks is an emerging approach to understanding American political parties as decentralized, nonhierarchical, fluid systems with porous boundaries of a wide array of actors. Parties‐asnetworks include interest groups, social movements, political consultants, and advocacy organizations, in additional to the usual suspects of elected officials, party officials, and citizen‐activists. This approach ameliorates several deficits of the traditional, tripartite view of parties in government, in elections, and as organizations. The authors apply the parties‐as‐networks approach using data from surveys of delegates at the 2008 Democratic and Republican national conventions. Analysis of delegates’ memberships in a wide variety of organizations demonstrates that Democrats …

The Response To Nuclear Proliferation, Annelies Z. Kamran Oct 2009

The Response To Nuclear Proliferation, Annelies Z. Kamran

Working Papers

This paper uses the methods of social network analysis to discover the structural patterns of cooperation that arose in response to a global traditional security problem. It does this by mapping compulsory and institutional power relations (Barnett and Duvall 2005) among actors responding to the proliferation of nuclear weapons since the end of the Cold War. For the institutional power measure, I use treaty and international agreement membership; and for the compulsory power measure, I use contractual obligations for nuclear expertise, materials, and technology. By mapping the relationships at the system level of world politics, including individual states as well …

Butoh, Bodies, And Being, Brianne Waychoff Oct 2009

Butoh, Bodies, And Being, Brianne Waychoff

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This essay argues for a fluid view of the Japanese avant-garde dance form. Just as butoh resists fixity, this essay is a pastiche of perspectives constituting multiple interpretations of butoh rather than a singular explanation. Through a consideration of Judith Hamera’s 1990 essay “Butoh, Ma, and a Crosscultural Gaze,” coupled with recent popular attention to the form, historical narratives of the Japanese avant-garde and butoh, personal narrative, and reflections provided by butoh performers, this essay opens up alternative ways for thinking about dance practices, and butoh specifically, in performance studies.

Gendered Social Movements: A Critical Comparison Of The Suffrage And Gay Marriage Movements, Michelle L. Kelsey Oct 2009

Gendered Social Movements: A Critical Comparison Of The Suffrage And Gay Marriage Movements, Michelle L. Kelsey

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

The elections of 2008 saw the passage of several overwhelming and explicit condemnations of gay rights across the nation. Most damaging to the gay marriage movement was the successful passage of proposition 8 in California, the first time that the right to gay marriage was repealed. I argue that the continued modeling of the civil rights framework defers an analysis of the argumentative strategies of historically gendered movements such as the suffrage movement and is a disservice to the strategic potential of the marriage equality movement. The critical comparison made here between suffrage and marriage equality opens the potential for …

Causality In Political Networks, James H. Fowler, Michael T. Heaney, David W. Nickerson, John F. Padgett, Betsy Sinclair Sep 2009

Causality In Political Networks, James H. Fowler, Michael T. Heaney, David W. Nickerson, John F. Padgett, Betsy Sinclair

Working Papers

As the study of political networks becomes more common in political science, greater attention to questions of causality is warranted. This essay explores competing visions of causality in political networks. Independent essays address issues of statistical model specification, identification of multi-step personal influence, measurement error, causality in historical perspective, and the insights of field experiments. These essays do not agree entirely on the nature of causality in political networks, though they commonly take seriously concerns regarding homophily, time- consistency, and the uniqueness of political network data. Serious consideration of these methodological issues promises to enhance the value-added of network analysis …
