The Portfolio Of Political Ties And Market Entries Of Business Groups In Emerging Economies, Hongjin Zhu, Chi-Nien Chung
The Portfolio Of Political Ties And Market Entries Of Business Groups In Emerging Economies, Hongjin Zhu, Chi-Nien Chung
2010
This study examines how political ties maintained by a firm with rival political parties affect the firm’s entry into new industries. Drawing on the social network research, resource dependence theory, and corporate political strategy literature, we argue that the impact of a firm’s portfolio of political ties on market entry depends on the distribution of political power among rival political parties and the concomitant interdependency between the focal firm and its political partners. A diverse portfolio of political ties may facilitate entries when the political parties are relatively evenly matched in political power, but may induce adverse effects when there …

Communicating With Constituents In 140 Characters Or Less:, Christine B. Williams, Girish J. Gulati
Working Papers
This paper affords an opportunity to study the early adoption, implementation and performance of an emerging technology by analyzing which members of Congress have been early adopters and extensive users of Twitter, and which have attracted the most followers. Our research questions and measures draw from the diffusion of innovation literature and early studies of online politics. Three multivariate analyses reveal that two motivators of adoption, party (Republican) and campaign resources are also drivers leading to extensive usage, but the other two, an urban constituency and the member’s own age do not. Instead, a large vote share in the last …

Others were free fatty acid 2.37% (Oleic acid), acid value 4.74 % (Oleic acid), …
Disagreeing About Disagreement: How Conflict In Social Networks Affects Political Behavior, Casey A. Klofstad, Anand Sokhey, Scott D. Mcclurg
Disagreeing About Disagreement: How Conflict In Social Networks Affects Political Behavior, Casey A. Klofstad, Anand Sokhey, Scott D. Mcclurg
Working Papers
At the center of debates on deliberative democracy is the issue of how much real deliberation citizens experience on a regular basis in their core social networks. These “disagreements about disagreement” come in a variety of forms, with scholars advocating significantly different empirical approaches (e.g., Huckfeldt, Johnson, and Sprague 2004; Mutz 2006), and coming to significantly different substantive conclusions. In this paper, we tackle these discrepancies through methodological advances and an investigation into the effects that conceptual differences have on key findings relating interpersonal political disagreement to political attitudes and behaviors Drawing on the 2008 ANES panel study, we explore …
Political Belief Networks. Socio-Cognitive Heterogeneity In American Public Opinion, Delia Baldassarri, Amir Goldberg
Political Belief Networks. Socio-Cognitive Heterogeneity In American Public Opinion, Delia Baldassarri, Amir Goldberg
2010
Most research in public opinion and political sophistication relies on the assumption that Americans organize their political belief system according to the liberal and conservative categories. Yet not all of them do. We hypothesize that citizens’ sociodemographic profiles make them disposed to espouse different understandings of the political debate, and document systematic heterogeneity in Americans’ organization of their political attitudes over the last two decades. We interpret this diversity as the coexistence of multiple belief systems.
Relational class analysis (RCA), a network-based method for detecting heterogene- ity in collective patterns of opinion, is used to identify distinctive opinion structures – …

Taxol Precursor Production In Physcomitrella Patens, Samuel Hughes, Aldwin Anterola
Taxol Precursor Production In Physcomitrella Patens, Samuel Hughes, Aldwin Anterola
Posters
Taxol is a cancer fighting drug that was initially isolated from the Pacific Yew. However, the isolation process is not very efficient and the tree is being excessively harvested and faces extinction. To synthetically make Taxol is an inefficient and costly process. If the precursor taxadiene-5 alpha-acetoxy-10 beta-ol can be produced with ease, then the synthetic modification of that precursor would be an efficient way to produce the potent cancer fighting drug. Several genes from the Pacific Yew were isolated and amplified so that they could be inserted into the moss Physcomitrella patens. Using competent E. coli cells as entry …

Waiting For A More Certain Future; Decision Making In A Video Game, Tara Webb
Posters
A first-person-shooter video game was adapted for the study of probability discounting, in which an outcome decreases in value as its likelihood decreases, and delay discounting, in which an outcome decreases in value as the delay to its occurrence increases. This novel preparation was designed to address a criticism of previous research in the area. Discounting research using humans has been criticized for using hypothetical outcomes and tasks in which the probabilities and delays are not actually experienced. In the video game preparation, participants fired a weapon that could produce an explosion. The longer that they waited, the higher the …

At The Brink Of Free Agency: Creating The Foundation For The Messersmith-Mcnally Decision ─ 1968–1975, Ed Edmonds
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
In this article, Ed Edmonds chronicles the evolution of labor relations in America’s favorite pastime from the first collective bargaining agreement to the arbitration that resulted in free agency for players. Edmonds describes the players’ struggles with the reserve clause, a standard clause contained in all player contracts which allowed a team to retain the rights to a player even after the expiration of his contract. Although a player was not obligated to play for the contracted team, he was not free to enter into a contract with another team. Therefore, a player’s only option was to negotiate a new …
