Digging For Buried Treasure: Strategies For Promoting Institutional Repositories (Part 1), Julie Arendt, Jonathan Nabe, Andrea Imre
Conference Papers and Presentations
(From Conference Program): This session will highlight successful strategies at two institutions for gaining campus participation in institutional repositories. Librarians from Southern Illinois University Carbondale will discuss their experience in designing and implementing an effective marketing program, recruiting content and expanding collections. Librarians from Kansas State University will describe their best practices focusing on the pivotal role of library liaisons and value-added services in ensuring the success of the institutional repository.

Ethnobotanical Observations In The Mornaula Reserve Forest Of Komoun, West Himalaya, India, Shreekar Pant, S. S. Samant
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
A field trip was undertaken in the Mornaula Reserve Forest of Kumaun, West Himalaya, India. A collection of plants was made from this reserve forest at an altitude ranging from 1500-2200m amsl. Local people were contacted for the local names and uses of plants growing there. They are used as medicine, edible, fuel, fodder, timber, fiber, making agricultural implements and religious ceremonies.
Stress Response Inside Perturbed Particle Assemblies, Leo Silbert
Stress Response Inside Perturbed Particle Assemblies, Leo Silbert
Publications
The effect of structural disorder on the stress response inside three dimensional particle assemblies is studied using computer simulations of frictionless sphere packings. Upon applying a localised, perturbative force within the packings, the resulting Green's function response is mapped inside the different assemblies, thus providing an explicit view as to how the imposed perturbation is transmitted through the packing. In weakly disordered arrays, the resulting transmission of forces is of the double-peak variety, but with peak widths scaling linearly with distance from the source of the perturbation. This behaviour is consistent with an anisotropic elasticity response profile. Increasing the disorder …

Effect Of Lithotripter Focal Width On Stone Comminution In Shock Wave Lithotripsy, Jun Qin, W. Neal Simmons, Georgy Sankin, Pei Zhong
Effect Of Lithotripter Focal Width On Stone Comminution In Shock Wave Lithotripsy, Jun Qin, W. Neal Simmons, Georgy Sankin, Pei Zhong
Articles
Using a reflector insert, the original HM-3 lithotripter field at 20 kV was altered significantly with the peak positive pressure (p+) in the focal plane increased from 49 to 87 MPa while the -6 dB focal width decreased concomitantly from 11 to 4 mm. Using the original reflector, p+ of 33 MPa with a -6 dB focal width of 18 mm were measured in a pre-focal plane 15-mm proximal to the lithotripter focus. However, the acoustic pulse energy delivered to a 28-mm diameter area around the lithotripter axis was comparable (~120 mJ). For all three exposure conditions, …
On Simulating Univariate And Multivariate Burr Type Iii And Type Xii Distributions, Todd C. Headrick, Mohan Dev Pant, Yanyan Sheng
On Simulating Univariate And Multivariate Burr Type Iii And Type Xii Distributions, Todd C. Headrick, Mohan Dev Pant, Yanyan Sheng
Publications
This paper describes a method for simulating univariate and multivariate Burr Type III and Type XII distributions with specied correlation matrices. The methodology is based on the derivation of the parametric forms of a pdf and cdf for this family of distributions. The paper shows how shape parameters can be computed for specied values of skew and kurtosis. It is also demonstrated how to compute percentage points and other measures of central tendency such as the mode, median, and trimmed mean. Examples are provided to demonstrate how this Burr family can be used in the context of distribution fitting using …
E-Government In Kazakhstan: Realization And Prospects, Maxat Kassen
E-Government In Kazakhstan: Realization And Prospects, Maxat Kassen
2010
Kazakhstan tries to develop its own model of public administration in a westernized manner. One of the examples of such a trend in this country is efforts on organization of e-government. One more aspect of the aspiration is e-voting. These two innovations are often regarded today as potential accelerators of the complicated administrative reforms which the Kazakh government has been carrying out since declaration of its independence in 1991. Inspired by successful international experience of e-government development, especially, of Baltic States and Singapore, Kazakhstan starts e-government project in 2005 by approving a two-year strategic implementation program. The information web-portal (www.e.gov.kz) …
The Voter Is Only A Tweet Away Micro Blogging During The 2009 European Parliament Election Campaign In The Netherlands, Maurice Vergeer, Liesbeth Hermans, Steven Sams
The Voter Is Only A Tweet Away Micro Blogging During The 2009 European Parliament Election Campaign In The Netherlands, Maurice Vergeer, Liesbeth Hermans, Steven Sams
2010
In many western countries politics increasingly suffers from declining interest and declining participation in the political processes (Flickinger & Studlar, 2007). This not only applies to national politics but also, or even more so, to European politics. The European Union in particular is said to suffer from a severe democratic deficit (cf. van Os, Jankowski, & Vergeer, 2007). In general, support for the European Union is low: only a small majority (52%) supports its country’s EU membership (European Commission, 2009). This is reflected in the low voter turnout (43%) for the EP elections. The Netherlands, although its population supports the …
The Emergence Of Local Elite Networks: Structure Or Preference? - An Econometric Approach -, Christian Assmann, Christian H.C.A. Henning
The Emergence Of Local Elite Networks: Structure Or Preference? - An Econometric Approach -, Christian Assmann, Christian H.C.A. Henning
2010
This paper analyzes the determinants and causes of communication in local elite networks. The database comprises four rural county elite networks from Poland and Slovakia. Socio spatial processes allowing a flexible incorporation of individual specific information are embedded within a logit framework. Empirical analysis focuses on the assessment of the hypotheses, whether preferences measured by socio demographic factors and political ideology or institutional settings (structure) influence individual communication in local elite networks. The results suggest that while in high performing communities institutional settings, i.e. a common membership in local organizations, are the most important factors determining communication, in low performing …
Explaining Decision-Making Structures In Swiss Politics: A Combination Of Sna And Qca, Manuel Fischer
Explaining Decision-Making Structures In Swiss Politics: A Combination Of Sna And Qca, Manuel Fischer
2010
This paper attempts to explain decision-making structures in Swiss politics. Decision-making structures describe the relations between collective actors collaborating and fighting for influence in a policy network and are defined by two main dimensions, which are power and conflict. For the explanation of decision-making structures, the paper relies on factors such as Europeanization, media presence, federalism, the pre-parliamentary phase and the referendum. I assume that these different factors interact with each other when they influence the decision-making structure. In order to assess the importance of these factors, the paper compares the 11 most important decision-making processes in Switzerland between 2001 …

Foreign Lis Degrees In Contemporary Us Academic Libraries, Melissa A. Hubbard, Amber T. Burtis, Megan C. Lotts
Articles
Purpose – The purpose of this case study is to summarize a task force's efforts to change the educational degree requirements for open librarian positions at a large university in the Midwestern USA.
Design/methodology/approach – The paper reviews the literature on degree requirements in academic libraries and the nature of LIS degrees from countries outside the USA. It analyzes 136 position advertisements for academic librarians by required terminal degree and the type and Association of Research Libraries (ARL) status of the institution.
Findings – The paper concludes that, while most position advertisements do not specifically address foreign Library and Information …
