Ethnobotanical Studies On Plant Resources Of Tahsil Multai, District Betul, Madhya Pradesh, India, Dinesh K. Dahare, Aruna Jain
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
The present investigation was carried out in Tahsil Multai, a region dominated by the Korku and Gond tribes. A large number of traditional herbal healers exist belonging to the tribal community and are utilizing local plants in ethno-medicinal practices prevalent in the area and resulted in the documentation of 47 medicinal plant species belonging to 29 families and 45 genera. The study thus underlines the potentials of the ethnobotanical research and the need for the documentation of traditional ecological knowledge pertaining to the medicinal plant utilization for the greater benefit of mankind in different regions.

Antimicrobial Activities Of Some Euphorbiaceae Plants Used In The Traditional Medicine Of Akwa Ibom State Of Nigeria, A. Essiett Uduak, K. Ajibesin Kola’
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Nine plant species belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family and used in traditional medicine in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria were evaluated for in vitro antimicrobial activity using agar diffusion method. The stem bark of Maesobotrya dusenii gave the most significant effect followed by its root bark. The inhibitory effect of M. dusenii stem bark extract (37 mm) on Pseudomonas aeruginosa was higher than that of Chloramphenicol (35 mm). However, Alchornea laxiflora leaf extract showed the weakest activity. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the extracts ranged between 12.5 and 250 μg/mL. The results of the antimicrobial effects validated the use of …
A Geographic Approach To Place And Natural Resource Use In Local Food Systems, Leslie Duram, Lydia Oberholtzer
A Geographic Approach To Place And Natural Resource Use In Local Food Systems, Leslie Duram, Lydia Oberholtzer
Publications
This article illuminates the geographic concept of ‘place’ in local foods. Because the social aspects of local food have been more fully addressed in previous literature, this review focuses instead on the ecological aspects of farming and food. First, the literature on natural resource use in agriculture provides contextual understanding of water use, biodiversity, soils and agro-ecological methods. The complex relationship between climate change and agriculture is described and models assessing the impacts of climate change on agriculture are detailed. The geography of local food is specifically addressed by describing methods for assessing natural resource use in local food, including …

Advocacy Group Activity In The New Media Environment, David Karpf
Advocacy Group Activity In The New Media Environment, David Karpf
2010
This paper presents an analysis of early data from the newly-launched Membership Communications Project (MCP). The MCP is a data-aggregation effort concerned with tracking the email practices of progressive advocacy organizations in American politics. Based on 2.5 months of data collection across 70 organizations (998 messages in total), the goal of the paper is twofold. First, the paper establishes the purpose behind and construction of the MCP dataset, offering an “annotated user’s manual” of sorts for interested members of the research community. Data collection will continue for at least six months, and the dataset is freely available to other researchers. …

Evaluation Of A Comprehensive Tobacco Cessation Curriculum For Dental Hygiene Programs, Joan M. Davis Rdh, Ms, Margaret S Stockdale, Martha Cropper
Journal Articles
Dental health care providers continue to offer inconsistent and limited tobacco use cessation (TUC) interventions even though smoking-related morbidity and mortality continue to be a substantial health concern. Our purpose was to conduct a comprehensive, three-year (2003-06) TUC curriculum evaluation that included assessment of existing TUC education offered; dental hygiene educators' readiness to incorporate TUC education into the curriculum; and development of a pre-test/post-test assessment instrument and faculty development program. This curriculum study was carried out alongside a research study to evaluate the effectiveness of a peer-reviewed tobacco curriculum (Tobacco Free! Curriculum). Faculty members (baseline n=97; third-year n=42) from the …

Assimilation, Rejection Or Convergence? The Role Of The Bilingual Press In San Antonio, Texas, Mary O'Donnell
Assimilation, Rejection Or Convergence? The Role Of The Bilingual Press In San Antonio, Texas, Mary O'Donnell
Dissertations
A mixed methods study of the two leading bilingual news publications in San Antonio, Texas, in 2009 reveals that the editors and journalists who are responsible for the content and direction of the publications have adapted the role of their publications to fit the evolving composition of the U.S. Hispanic population in San Antonio. This study incorporated content analysis based on 24 issues of two bilingual news publications and seven in-depth interviews with editors and journalists at the two publications. The results were examined within the frame of recent models of ethnic media functions and their use of assimilation and …

Making The Significant Significant: A Discourse Analysis Examining The Teacher's Role In Negotiating Meaning Of Text With Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Students, Keith Standiford Wheeler
Dissertations
This study reports data from a three-month discourse analysis of a fifth-grade teacher`s language used to negotiate meaning of text with linguistically and culturally diverse students. Specifically, I use Gee`s (2005) discourse analysis methodology to examine the teacher`s language-in-use for seven building tasks of language--significance, activities, identities, relationships, politics (the distribution of social goods), connections, and sign systems and knowledge--in a micro level analysis for eight teaching episodes covering reading and/or social studies instruction. In doing so, I conceptualize categories and subcategories of language use for each of the language building tasks. I find that the teacher used instructional language …

An Exploration Of Corporate Social Responsibility And Machiavellianism In Future Health Care Professionals, Sandra K. Collins
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) orientations of future healthcare professionals and their relative viewpoint of CSR in terms of Socioeconomic or Classical. The study also sought to determine the nature and the strength of relationships between CSR orientations and Machiavellian tendencies. To conduct the study, 162 future health care professionals enrolled in varying healthcare- related programs at an accredited university were surveyed. Findings from the study indicated a linear relationship between an individual's CSR orientation, CSR viewpoint, and innate Machiavellian levels. The higher an individual's Machiavellian score, the more likely he or …

The Environmental Concern Of Youth At A Ymca Youth Adventure Camp, Sarah A. Schneider
Theses
This study was conducted to examine and report on the environmental concern of the youth participants of the Teen Adventure program at YMCA Camp Jones Gulch to determine if those ideas altered over the course of the campers' chosen summer camp experience. Campers and their guardians were asked to provide consent and assent to participate. Forty-three participants completed both a pre and posttest survey which included 15 items on a Likert-type scale asking participants to rate their agreement with statements about the environment. Results indicated that neither activity nor age was significant in explaining differences. However, further examination showed a …
Effects Of Internal Fields In Quantum Dots, Sasi Sekaran Sundaresan
Effects Of Internal Fields In Quantum Dots, Sasi Sekaran Sundaresan
Theses
In this work we study the effect of built in electrostatic fields in Quantum Dots. Built-in electrostatic fields in Zincblende quantum dots originate mainly from--(1) the fundamental crystal atomicity and the interfaces between two dissimilar materials, (2) the strain relaxation, and (3) the piezoelectric polarization. We also study the geometric dependence of built in fields on 3 shapes namely Box, Dome and Pyramid. The main objectives are 3 fold they are (1) Explore the nature and the role of crystal atomicity at the interfaces and built-in fields (strain-field, and piezoelectric polarization) in determining the energy spectrum and the wave functions. …
