Network Intrusion Detection Types And Computation, Purvag Patel, Chet Langin, Feng Yu, Shahram Rahimi Jan 2012

Network Intrusion Detection Types And Computation, Purvag Patel, Chet Langin, Feng Yu, Shahram Rahimi

Computer Science Publications

Our research created a network Intrusion Detection Math (ID Math) consisting of two components: (1) a way of specifying intrusion detection types in a manner which is more suitable for an analytical environment; and (2) a computational model which describes methodology for preparing intrusion detection data stepwise from network packets to data structures in a way which is appropriate for sophisticated analytical methods such as statistics, data mining, and computational intelligence. We used ID Math in a production Self-Organizing Map (SOM) intrusion detection system named ANNaBell as well as in the SOM+ Diagnostic System which we developed.

Characterizing Tukey H And Hh-Distributions Through L-Moments And The L-Correlation, Todd C. Headrick, Mohan D. Pant Jan 2012

Characterizing Tukey H And Hh-Distributions Through L-Moments And The L-Correlation, Todd C. Headrick, Mohan D. Pant

Publications

This paper introduces the Tukey family of symmetric h and asymmetric hh-distributions in the contexts of univariate L-moments and the L-correlation. Included is the development of a procedure for specifying nonnormal distributions with controlled degrees of L-skew, L-kurtosis, and L-correlations. The procedure can be applied in a variety of settings such as modeling events (e.g., risk analysis, extreme events) and Monte Carlo or simulation studies. Further, it is demonstrated that estimates of L-skew, L-kurtosis, and L-correlation are substantially superior to conventional product-moment estimates of skew, kurtosis, and Pearson correlation in terms …

A Doubling Technique For The Power Method Transformations, Mohan D. Pant, Todd C. Headrick Jan 2012

A Doubling Technique For The Power Method Transformations, Mohan D. Pant, Todd C. Headrick

Publications

Power method polynomials are used for simulating non-normal distributions with specified product moments or L-moments. The power method is capable of producing distributions with extreme values of skew (L-skew) and kurtosis (L-kurtosis). However, these distributions can be extremely peaked and thus not representative of real-world data. To obviate this problem, two families of distributions are introduced based on a doubling technique with symmetric standard normal and logistic power method distributions. The primary focus of the methodology is in the context of L-moment theory. As such, L-moment based systems of equations are derived for …

The Implications Of Fictional Media For Political Beliefs, Ken Mulligan, Philip Habel Jan 2012

The Implications Of Fictional Media For Political Beliefs, Ken Mulligan, Philip Habel

Working Papers

Most research on media effects in political science deals with the news media or political campaigns. While some recent work looks at the effects of soft news on beliefs and opinions, little attention has been paid to the potential consequences of media that are fictional. Although viewers typically watch fiction for entertainment, the themes, plots, and dialogue may nevertheless influence their thoughts about politics. This paper examines the effects of fiction on political beliefs. We do this in the context of an experimental design, where subjects in the treatment group watched the outlandish movie, Wag the Dog. The results show …

The Origins, Evolution, And Future Of Preference Assessments In Applied Behavior Analysis, Hamilton Rech Jan 2012

The Origins, Evolution, And Future Of Preference Assessments In Applied Behavior Analysis, Hamilton Rech

Research Papers

For nearly thirty years, preference assessments have been utilized in determining items of interest for individuals afflicted with developmental disabilities. Originally, preference assessments were conducted on individuals with severe and profound disabilities, however over time, preference assessments have been adapted to suit individuals with various levels of functioning, as well as those with physical disabilities. Five primary methodologies have become widely accepted for conducting such assessments, and as new techniques have emerged, researchers have conducted a wide range of comparative studies, in hopes of sorting out each respective assessment’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as identify which specific populations for …

Toward The Adaptive Governance Of Transboundary Water Resources, Kofi Akamani, Patrick Impero Wilson Dec 2011

Toward The Adaptive Governance Of Transboundary Water Resources, Kofi Akamani, Patrick Impero Wilson

Forestry Articles

Transboundary water resources, such as international river basins, pose complex and often contentious management challenges. In response to the failures associated with the state-centric approach to the governance of international waters, discussions on transboundary water resources governance over the last two decades or so have focused largely on public involvement. The need to build resilience into such governance systems has been virtually overlooked. Based on a conceptualization of transboundary water resources as complex social-ecological systems, the manuscript proposes adaptive governance as a unifying framework for informing policies aimed at promoting the conservation of transboundary water resources in an increasingly unpredictable …

Unfashionably Late: Protecting A Designer‘S Identity After A Personal Name Becomes A Valuable Trademark, Allison B. Pitzer

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

This comment discusses the use of personal name trademarks in the fashion industry, and in particular, its impact on the namesake designer.  Designers currently have very few options regarding the use of their personal name as a trademark, and often cannot retain any use of their name after a designer has left the company owning the trademark.  The fashion industry is unique in that personal name trademarks are widely used and become extremely valuable.  At the commencement of a fashion enterprise, a designer will require investors to build his or her brand.  Often, choosing to name the brand after the …

Thermal Conductivity Enhancement In Nanofluids -Mathematical Model, Anand Natchimuthu Chinnaraj Dec 2011

Thermal Conductivity Enhancement In Nanofluids -Mathematical Model, Anand Natchimuthu Chinnaraj

Theses

The study on developing a mathematical model for thermal conductivity enhancement in nanofluids was based on formation of nanoparticles into nanoclusters, nanolayer thickness, Brownian motion and volume fraction of nanoclusters. An equation for the thermal conductivity of nanofluids was developed. The expression developed successfully explained the enhanced thermal conductivity of nanofluids and led to some important conclusions. It was found that in this study the nanoparticles tend to form nanoclusters and the volume fraction of the nanoclusters and the trapped fluid in the nanocluster was contributing to the overall thermal conductivity enhancement. Various types of cluster formation was analyzed and …

“MMA: Misunderstanding My Art,” explores the sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and the lives of four fighters who participate in the sport. MMA, one of the fastest growing sports in the world, continues to be ill-perceived and misunderstood because of the nature of the sport. MMA is a full contact sport in which opponents employ trained techniques in combating each other to win a competition. Fighters suffer injuries, but serious injury in the sport is not common. Like other contact sports, there are rules, regulations and safety tactics that are employed during matches, yet critics consider the sport “too …

Digital Books And The Salvation Of Academic Publishing., Roger Cross

Articles

Digitization was not, nor ever will be, the solution to problems faced by Academic Libraries. Digitization cannot be downplayed, however no amount of digitization will ever address the systemic issues that lie at the heart of academic library’s difficulties. Digitization is merely a means of data delivery and as such does not address foundational defects within the academic system. The true salvation through digitization will not be found in libraries, but in commercial publisher’s bottom line.

Any Other Name( A Documentary Recounting A Chinese Family Saga Of Identities Through Generations), Shuman Deng

Research Papers

As China’s visibility to the world rapidly increases, the perception of Chinese identities is of concern by the Chinese themselves and by the world outside of China in trying to understand this burgeoning global power. The Chinese are very conscientious of how the world views them, and go to great lengths to effect this impression. One group that is representing China’s image to the world is the “80 Hou”, the post-80’s generation that are travelling and studying abroad more than their predecessors. They are unique in Chinese history and are the subject of interest in this research. Within this generation …
