The Capital Gap: Nollywood And The Limits Of Informal Trade, John C. Mccall
The Capital Gap: Nollywood And The Limits Of Informal Trade, John C. Mccall
Publications
This article examines Nollywood as a creative industry based in Africa’s informal sector. By definition, the informal sector produces no financial records, so no quantitative economic data are presented. This research utilizes ethnographic methods and anthropological analysis to highlight the importance of the video movie industry to Nigerian people, its place in their economic life and its integral role in their culture. Nollywood’s intimacy with Nigerians has been achieved by way of the industry’s distinctive informal system of production and distribution. This same informality prevents the video industry from establishing financial legitimacy. Without the ability to generate capital, the industry …
A Doubling Method For The Generalized Lambda Distribution, Todd C. Headrick, Mohan Dev Pant
A Doubling Method For The Generalized Lambda Distribution, Todd C. Headrick, Mohan Dev Pant
Publications
This paper introduces a new family of generalized lambda distributions GLDs based on a method of doubling symmetric GLDs. The focus of the development is in the context of L-moments and L-correlation theory. As such, included is the development of a procedure for specifying double GLDs with controlled degrees of L-skew, L-kurtosis, and L-correlations. The procedure can be applied in a variety of settings such as modeling events and Monte Carlo or simulation studies. Further, it is demonstrated that estimates of L-skew, L-kurtosis, and L-correlation are substantially superior to conventional product-moment estimates …

Effects Of Drip Irrigation Circuit Design And Lateral Line Lengths: I—On Pressure And Friction Loss, Mohamed Yousif Tayel, David A. Lightfoot, Hani A.-G. Mansour
Articles
Laboratory tests were conducted at the Irrigation Devices and Equipment’s Test Laboratory, Agricultural Engineering Research Institute, Agriculture Research Center, Giza, Egypt. The experimental design of laboratory experiments was split in randomized complete block design with three replicates. Laboratory tests carried out on three irrigation lateral lines of 40, 60, 80 m under the following three drip irrigation circuit (DIC) designs; 1) one manifold for lateral lines or closed circuits with one manifold of drip irrigation system (CM1DIS); 2) closed circuits with two manifolds for lateral lines (CM2DIS), and 3) traditional drip irrigation system (TDIS) as a …
Using A Minimum Tile Path For Plant Transformations Encompassing The Entire Soybean Genome, Hidayat Ullah, Mohammed Jasim, David A. Lightfoot
Using A Minimum Tile Path For Plant Transformations Encompassing The Entire Soybean Genome, Hidayat Ullah, Mohammed Jasim, David A. Lightfoot
Articles
Genomes like Glycine max (soybean) that have been highly conserved following increases in ploidy represent a frontier for genome analysis. Many soybean QTL analyzed to date have been composed of gene clusters each with contributing a portion of the trait rather than alleles of single genes. At the Soybean Genome Database (SoyGD) http://soybeangenome.siu.edu the genome browser that integrates and served the publicly available soybean physical map, BAC fingerprint database and genetic map associated genomic data shows a minimum tile of transformation ready BIBAC-like clones in pCLD04541 (pV41; oriV; tra; bom). Sequence resources made available through the DOE genome sequencing project …

Effect Of Drip Irrigation Circuits Design And Lateral Line Length On: Ii-Flow Velocity And Velocity Head, Mohamed Yousif Tayel, David A. Lightfoot, Hani A.-G. Mansour
Articles
The objectives of the work were to study the effect of drip irrigation circuits (DIC) and lateral lines lengths (LLL) on: Flow velocity (FV) and velocity head (VH). Laboratory tests were con- ducted at Irrigation Devices and Equipments Tests Laboratory, Agricultural Engineering Research Institute, Agriculture Research Center, Giza, Egypt. The experimental design of laboratory experiments was split in randomized complete block design with three replicates. Laboratory tests carried out on three irrigation lateral lines 40, 60, 80 m (LLL1, LLL2; LLL3) under the following three drip irrigation circuits (DIC): a) one manifold for lateral …

Day Programming For Aging Adults With Intellectual Disabilities: A Review Of What Is And What Should Be, Kelly E. Norris Evans
Day Programming For Aging Adults With Intellectual Disabilities: A Review Of What Is And What Should Be, Kelly E. Norris Evans
Research Papers
The life expectancy of individuals with intellectual disabilities has risen with the improvement of medical technology and improved access to health care, which has resulted in a new need to provide supports to these individuals in their later years. Presently there is no clear model on how to provide these services to this growing population. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine differences in nursing home and Intellectual Disability services in an effort to determine suggestions on best practices for programming for aging adults that have intellectual disabilities.

Syringe And Needle Exchange Programs: A Valuable Harm Reduction Technique In The Battle Against Injection Drug Use, Stephanie M. Woods
Syringe And Needle Exchange Programs: A Valuable Harm Reduction Technique In The Battle Against Injection Drug Use, Stephanie M. Woods
Research Papers
In the last two decades there has been a growing interest surrounding the topic of clean needle exchange programs, the effects they have on injection drug users, their effectiveness in the prevention and spreading of HIV, AIDS and other blood borne pathogens, the cost surrounding the operation of NEPs and SEPs, and their beneficialness on society as a whole. The objective of this research paper is to examine all the aforementioned facets as well as other benefits that stem from NEPs and SEPs. Since injection drug use is driving HIV epidemics in many countries and accounts for almost a third …

Academics And Extracurriculars: A National Study Of College Radio, Lucas R. Mccallister
Academics And Extracurriculars: A National Study Of College Radio, Lucas R. Mccallister
Research Papers
This study was designed to follow in the steps of a 1969 study of college radio management and structure, both to see how college radio in general has changed, and to update the models presented. A survey was issued through an email listserv affiliated with College Broadcasters Incorporated, and received 50 responses.
Some issues that college radio face have remain unchanged, such staff turnover, training, and college radio and it's relation to the broadcast industry. At the same time, older technologies such as carrier current have fallen by the wayside, while streaming radio has become the new low-cost entry choice. …
Awareness With Accuracy: An Analysis Of The Representation Of Autism In Film And Television, Lacreanna S. Young
Awareness With Accuracy: An Analysis Of The Representation Of Autism In Film And Television, Lacreanna S. Young
Research Papers
This was a study analyzing accuracy and stereotypes about autism representation in Rain Man, Mercury Rising, Parenthood, and Arthur. The autistic characters were viewed a minimum of five times. Their behaviors were compared with common myths about autism as presented by the Autism Research Institute. Autistic characters were labeled as dispelling or reinforcing the five myths analyzed. Production efforts to be scientifically accurate and autism representation since the release of Rain Man were also analyzed. While the media analyzed did utilize various efforts to represent autism accurately, this study found that each medium relied upon many …

Hal W. Trovillion's Role In Preserving The History Of "Bloody Williamson", Melissa A. Hubbard
Hal W. Trovillion's Role In Preserving The History Of "Bloody Williamson", Melissa A. Hubbard
Articles
This article examines the efforts of Hal W. Trovillion, newspaper editor and private printer, to document the controversial history of his southern Illinois coal mining town in the early twentieth century. As a historical case study, it explores some of the challenges inherent in preserving original documents and cultural knowledge without institutional support, and with active interference from community members who worked to suppress information. Trovillion used his printing presses and contacts in the historical community to ensure that the turbulent events occurring in his town in the 1920s would be preserved in the archival record.
