Copyright, Fair Use, And The Creative Commons In The 21st Century, Megan Lotts Oct 2011

Copyright, Fair Use, And The Creative Commons In The 21st Century, Megan Lotts

Articles

As our daily lives become consumed with the World Wide Web and all it has to offer, I question how we view or engage the notion of intellectual property. Is there a better way to share our ideas in our current technological climate without misusing or breaking the laws of Copyright? Is Creative Commons licensing a solution? This paper will briefly look at the World Wide Web and how Copyright law, fair use, and the Creative Commons apply in the 21st century.

A Fistful Of Dollars: Bounty Hunting Under The Dodd-Frank Act’S Whistleblower Provisions, Neil Schonert Oct 2011

A Fistful Of Dollars: Bounty Hunting Under The Dodd-Frank Act’S Whistleblower Provisions, Neil Schonert

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

In the wake of the financial crises and recessions of the new millennium, Congress realized it must take more action to avert future disasters.  The Dodd-Frank Act provided the government with more oversight and tools to tackle new problems and securities violations.  One of these tools was the Act’s whistleblower provisions, which provided monetary incentives to whistleblowers providing valuable inside information on violations in the financial sector.

This Article examines previous attempts by Congress to secure inside information from individuals as well as the Dodd-Frank Act’s own attempt.  These prior attempts often created improper thresholds for whistleblowers, either barring good …

War As Metaphor And The Rule Of Law In Crisis: The Lessons We Should Have Learned From The War On Drugs, Susan Stuart Oct 2011

War As Metaphor And The Rule Of Law In Crisis: The Lessons We Should Have Learned From The War On Drugs, Susan Stuart

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Any number of public policy debates have been framed in terms of metaphorical war, none longer or as expensive as the War on Drugs.  This Article explores the very real harms in militarizing public policy debates by examining a small slice of the War on Drugs, that part of the War waged in schools.  Dangerous and violent rhetoric spurred the public to engage in this War, which eventually targeted children as the enemy.  As a consequence of that rhetoric, Congress spent billions of dollars on useless strategies while courts suspended children’s civil rights.  Throughout all this, we failed to examine …

The Effectiveness Of A Career Services’ Digital Dirt Workshop For Undergraduate Students, Jennifer T. Edwards, Anthony C. Edwards Sep 2011

The Effectiveness Of A Career Services’ Digital Dirt Workshop For Undergraduate Students, Jennifer T. Edwards, Anthony C. Edwards

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

Undergraduate students use Facebook or Myspace to communicate with their peers on the internet. Some of these individuals do not realize that their future employers may have access to their Facebook or Myspace profiles. Any negative information these employers discover about their candidates is “Digital Dirt”. The purpose of this study was to discover the effectiveness of a university-based career services’ Digital Dirt workshop for undergraduate students. This study sought to determine if participants would have different survey responses after the Digital Dirt workshop intervention (post-test) than they had before the Digital Dirt workshop intervention (pre-test). The results of this …

Ripe For The Plucking: Centralized And Consolidated Library Budgets As Revenue Streams For Profit., Roger Cross Aug 2011

Ripe For The Plucking: Centralized And Consolidated Library Budgets As Revenue Streams For Profit., Roger Cross

Articles

The accumulation and centralization of fiscal and selection power into the hands of library professionals could have benefited all, but inherent flaws were bound to arise. In particular the failure to adapt to increased large profit-driven publishers business. Libraries and universities failed to adequately foresee the extent of publishing monopolization. The academic library, as provider of campus-wide journal subscription, reduced demand by reducing the need to maintain individual departmental and faculty subscriptions. The end result was that a small number of publishers were able to fix pricing according to desired profit margins.

Partnering Industry And Education For Curricular Enhancement: A Response For Greater Educational Achievement, Deborah R. Barnett Aug 2011

Partnering Industry And Education For Curricular Enhancement: A Response For Greater Educational Achievement, Deborah R. Barnett

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

Despite high rates of unemployment, research indicates that employers are having a difficult time finding workers that have the knowledge and skills needed for available jobs. President Obama, state lawmakers, and national higher education associations are calling upon educational institutions to not only fill the current gap but to reach aggressive goals set for educational attainment in the U.S. by 2020. This article looks at a historical view of how education has met workforce needs in the past, employment projections, employer needs, and how educational institutions might respond to the call to develop a highly skilled workforce. In addition, a …

The Black Catholic Movement And Social Movement Continuity Theory: The Civil Rights Movement In Abeyance, Kevin C. Winstead Aug 2011

The Black Catholic Movement And Social Movement Continuity Theory: The Civil Rights Movement In Abeyance, Kevin C. Winstead

Research Papers

This work builds on Verta Taylor’s theory on social movement continuity to explain abeyance structures within total institutions. The work is grounded in the reinterpretation of Doug McAdam’s data from Political Process and the Development of Black Insurgency (1982) and in new data on the Black Catholic Rights movement from 1968 to the 1990s. Together these cases outline a type of abeyance structure within social movements that holds over the culture, resources, and strategies of a movement by focusing on more narrow oppositional interest. Using the five characteristics of an abeyance structure the research will discuss how the Black Catholic …

Stress Response In Confined Arrays Of Frictional And Frictionless Particles, Abdullah Cakir, Leo Silbert Aug 2011

Stress Response In Confined Arrays Of Frictional And Frictionless Particles, Abdullah Cakir, Leo Silbert

Publications

Stress transmission inside three-dimensional granular packings is investigated using computer simulations. Localized force perturbation techniques are implemented for frictionless and frictional shallow, ordered, granular arrays confined by solid boundaries for a range of system sizes. Stress response profiles for frictional packings agree well with the predictions for the semi-infinite half-plane of classical isotropic elasticity theory down to boxes of linear dimensions of approximately forty particle diameters and over several orders of magnitude in the applied force. The response profiles for frictionless packings exhibit a regime of transition to strongly anisotropic features with increasing box size. The differences between the natures …
