Finding Our Way(S): A Theoretical Model Of Performance Studies And Homeplace, Shauna M. Macdonald Jan 2010

Finding Our Way(S): A Theoretical Model Of Performance Studies And Homeplace, Shauna M. Macdonald

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Place, space, and homeplace have taken on increasing conceptual significance for performance studies practitioners. Despite a wealth of research, there are few theoretical models within the discipline to which researchers of homeplace can appeal for scholarly guidance. In this paper, I survey recent essays about home, place, and space within two major disciplinary journals to create such a model. Using my own experience with homeplace and performance as a frame, I outline four major orientations toward homeplace displayed within recent performance studies literature. Though my goal is far from exhaustive, I aim both to describe the variety of research projects …

Theses

This thesis addressed the Late Post-classic (A.D. 1200 - 1500) Nahua-Pipil of the central Pacific coast of Guatemala. It evaluated archaeological settlement plan data and ceramics in association with regional geography, and ethnohistorical accounts in conjunction with GIS tools for their analysis. The goal is to reconstruct Nahua-Pipil sociopolitical organization, testing the hypothesis that it was based on the Nahua altepetl system.

Island Hopping As A Mode Of Acculturation: The Experience Of German Sojourners In The American Southwest, Tatjana K. Rosev

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This study explores how members of a particular group of German sojourners—military and quasi-military personnel and their families—whose acculturative experience occurs largely within the closely-bounded confines of a military base, adjust to life in the American Southwest. I use a mixed-methods approach, including grounded theory, to interpret data produced by short questionnaires, in-depth interviews with eleven German participants, and my personal experience as a German sojourner.

Butoh, Bodies, And Being, Brianne Waychoff

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This essay argues for a fluid view of the Japanese avant-garde dance form. Just as butoh resists fixity, this essay is a pastiche of perspectives constituting multiple interpretations of butoh rather than a singular explanation. Through a consideration of Judith Hamera’s 1990 essay “Butoh, Ma, and a Crosscultural Gaze,” coupled with recent popular attention to the form, historical narratives of the Japanese avant-garde and butoh, personal narrative, and reflections provided by butoh performers, this essay opens up alternative ways for thinking about dance practices, and butoh specifically, in performance studies.

Managing Indigenous Knowledge And Traditional Cultural Expressions: Is Technology The Solution?, Amber T. Burtis

Articles

This paper discusses current issues surrounding the management of indigenous knowledge (IK) and traditional cultural expressions (TCEs) in libraries, archives and other cultural institutions. It addresses the need for: (1) ethical policies for the management of these knowledge systems, (2) critical approaches to the dominant library paradigm of information management, (3) recent efforts by the World Intellectual Property Organization and the American Library Association to craft policy on this topic, and (4) the need for and examples of collaboration with indigenous communities. Implications for social change with the implementation of socially responsible management systems are also considered.

An M-Star Model Of Dynamic, Endogenous Interdependence – A.K.A. Network-Behavior Coevolution – In The Social Sciences, Jude C. Hays, Aya Kachi, Robert J. Franzese Jun 2009

An M-Star Model Of Dynamic, Endogenous Interdependence – A.K.A. Network-Behavior Coevolution – In The Social Sciences, Jude C. Hays, Aya Kachi, Robert J. Franzese

Working Papers

Spatial interdependence, the interdependence of outcomes across units, is theoretically and substantively ubiquitous and central across the social sciences. The empirical clustering of outcomes on some dimension(s), spatial association, is also obvious in most contexts. However, outcomes may exhibit spatial association for three distinct reasons. Units may be responding similarly to similar exposure to similar exogenous internal/domestic or external/foreign stimuli (common exposure), and/or units’ responses may depend on others’ responses (contagion). A third possibility arises when the putative outcome affects the variable along which clustering occurs (selection: e.g., homophily). Severe empirical difficulties confront the accurate estimation and distinction of these …

Ethno-Medicinal Uses And Agro-Biodiversity Of Barmana Region In Bilaspur District Of Himachal Pradesh, Northwestern Himalaya, Pankaj Sharma, Neel Kamal Mishra

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

India is one of the richest countries in traditional knowledge, because of its ambient biodiversity, variety of habitats and rich ethnic divergence. Thus we have had well established local health tradition still relevant in indigenous healthcare system. The paper provides first hand information on the agro-biodiversity and ethno-medicinal uses of the area. In the present study 50 species belonging to 37 genera and 17 families i.e. Shrub (1 spp.), tree (1 spp.), herb (48 spp.) were recorded under the agro-biodiversity region of the area. The utilization pattern of the species indicated that leaves of 22 species, stem of 1 species …

Optical Pulsars And Black Arrows: Discoveries As Occasioned Productions, Timothy Koschmann, Alan Zemel

Publications

The current paper represents a methodological proposal. It seeks to address the question of how one might recognize a discovery as a discovery without knowing in advance what is available to be discovered. We propose a solution and demonstrate it using data from a study previously reported by Roschelle (1992). Roschelle investigated two students’ discovery of certain abstract features of Newtonian mechanics while working within a computer-based microworld, the Envisioning Machine. We employ an approach we term discovery-as-occasioned-production to re-examine his data. Such an approach proceeds stepwise from the identification of some matter discovered, working backwards to see just where …

Economic Credit In Renaissance Florence, John Padgett, Paul D. Mclean Jan 2009

Economic Credit In Renaissance Florence, John Padgett, Paul D. Mclean

Working Papers

What were the social and institutional factors that led to, and reinforced, the

precocious emergence of Florentine commercial capitalism,3 especially in the domain of

international merchant-banking? The dominant stream of answers, emphasized by

economic historians and by economists, focuses on the invention in late-medieval and

Renaissance Italy of a variety of innovative business techniques – bills of exchange,

double-entry bookkeeping, partnership contracts, commercial courts. If these impressive

organizational inventions are interpreted as facets of a broader rise of impersonal market

rationality, then a tension emerges in Florentine, and indeed in European, historiography

between economic historians and the work of social …

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Studies on hill tribes’ dependence on forest for their livelihood security are few for Orissa. Ethno medicinal observations in the state with a rich diversity of medicinal plants are still meager. The present study enumerates 21 plant species belonging to 18 families used in the treatment of various diseases among the tribes of Daitari Hill ranges of Orissa. The forest dwellers usually collect those rare plants from the nearby forest which is easily accessible and the medicines are prepared under the guidance of Vaidya or the village medicine man and are applied according to the dosage prescribed by the Vaidya. …

Guns, Babies And Labor: Campaign Finance Networks In The 2000 Elections (Working Draft), Suzanne M. Robbins, Maksim Tsvetovat

Working Papers

This paper seeks to expand upon what we know regarding the structure of interest group networks. To explore the potential for Social Network Analysis in the larger context of group behavior and information sharing, we make use of existing federal contribution data to explore how non-corporate political action committees are linked to one another at the federal level via regulated campaign finance. Thus, we explore the density of networks, who the central players are and group relationships with respect to investment behavior. Here, we make use of FEC contribution data from the 2000 electoral cycle to describe and explore the …
