Ancestor Worship In The Middle Sicán Theocratic State, Go Matsumoto Dec 2014

Ancestor Worship In The Middle Sicán Theocratic State, Go Matsumoto

Dissertations

The major focus of this dissertation is the ancestor worship that is inferred to have been practiced in the multiethnic Middle Sicán theocratic state (AD 950-1100) that prospered on the northern North Coast of Peru. The major objective is twofold: (1) demonstrating by archaeological means that ancestors were indeed worshipped in the Middle Sicán society and (2) elucidating the nature and role of the inferred ancestor cult and associated rituals and ceremonies. Ancestor (and the veneration of it) is one of the themes that have the deepest roots in the anthropological thoughts; nevertheless, many archaeologists have uncritically invoked ancestor veneration …

Factors Determining Habitat Selection By Spring Migrating Waterfowl Along The Wabash River, Illinois, Ryan O'Shaughnessy Dec 2014

Factors Determining Habitat Selection By Spring Migrating Waterfowl Along The Wabash River, Illinois, Ryan O'Shaughnessy

Dissertations

The main proponent of management of any animal species is habitat management. The ability of habitats to maintain species communities will depend on the variation in both habitat structure and composition. While spatial variation in habitat resources plays a critical role in determining the distribution of species, an equally important consideration that must be accounted for is temporal variation in the needs of the target species. Nutritional requirements, and thus the habitats used to fulfil those nutritional needs, will be different depending on if the individual is breeding, migrating, molting, enduring winter, or establishing a new range. For waterfowl, we …

Bilingualism, Executive Function, And Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Carina Ann Beck Dec 2014

Bilingualism, Executive Function, And Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Carina Ann Beck

Theses

In an era where the diagnosis of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is as high as 7% in school-aged children, the search for causes and preventions has never been more important. Current research indicates a positive relationship between bilingualism, particularly native bilingualism, and executive function in normally developing individuals. This study served to examine the potential relationship between bilingual education in a public school setting and the presence of ADHD symptoms in that school's students. This was a comparative analysis of students in a South Florida School District's two-way immersion program with the national average in terms of frequency of ADHD …

Developing A Tool For Site-Specific Gene Inactivation In Chlamydia, Cayla Marie Johnson Dec 2014

Developing A Tool For Site-Specific Gene Inactivation In Chlamydia, Cayla Marie Johnson

Theses

Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen that infects both humans and domestically important animals. Research in the field has until more recently been hindered by a lack of genetic tools. We have modified Sigma's TargeTronTM Gene Knockout System, which utilizes a mobile group II intron for site-specific insertion and gene inactivation, for use in C. trachomatis. As proof of principle, we used the system to inactivate incA, creating mutant strains DFCT3 and DFCT4 (independent clones both carrying incA::GII[bla]). IncA is a chlamydial inclusion membrane protein involved in homotypic fusion of inclusions when cells are infected with more …

Bahktin And The Carnivalesque: Calling For A Balanced Analysis Within Organizational Communication Studies, Renata Kolodziej-Smith Nov 2014

Bahktin And The Carnivalesque: Calling For A Balanced Analysis Within Organizational Communication Studies, Renata Kolodziej-Smith

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Bakhtin’s perspective and concepts have generated great interest in American and Western European academic circles in recent years. This review describes Bakhtin’s concept of carnivalesque and how it has been utilized in organizational communication research. The synopsis of the carnival application in organizational communication scholarship shows, however, very limited usage of a Burkean approach to Bakhtinian theory. In this paper, I call for a more balanced application of Bakhtinian carnival concept in the organizational communication field by including both Goffman’s and Burke’s frameworks to analyze organizational communication.

Supplemental Aesthetics: Techniques In Live Performance, Meggie Mapes Nov 2014

Supplemental Aesthetics: Techniques In Live Performance, Meggie Mapes

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

In this essay, I make a bid for the incorporation of the Derridian supplement into aesthetic discourses as a means of understanding and evaluating live performance. I call this move “supplemental aesthetics,” which, in the end, expands the vocabulary of absence and presence. I contend that a method of supplemental aesthetics adapts Derridian vocabulary to account for the intertextual and multisensory experience of live performance, asking practitioners and scholars to account for both the present and absent aspects of staged production. Supplemental aesthetics encourages a dialectic understanding of aesthetics: we make meaning by the simultaneous experience of reading what is …

Que(Er/Ry)Ing Christianity: Questions, Answers, And More Questions, Christina L. Ivey Nov 2014

Que(Er/Ry)Ing Christianity: Questions, Answers, And More Questions, Christina L. Ivey

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Caught at a divide between fundamentalist Judeo-Christian rhetoric and secular queer discourse, queer Christians face difficult obstacles in enacting/ embodying their identity. Bohache (2003) claims that a queer Christology, or developing a queer view of Christianity, is a potentially beneficial way to reconcile this identity gap. To explore this claim, I demonstrate a need to also examine the way in which a queer Christian body enacts a queer and Christian identity by juxtaposing my own narrative as a queer Christian in a religious setting against queer theory. Using Pelias’ (1999) guidelines for poetic essay, I weave queer theory throughout my …

Avoided Connections: Reflections On A Father, As A Son; And On Fathering, As A Father, Matthew R. Dealy Nov 2014

Avoided Connections: Reflections On A Father, As A Son; And On Fathering, As A Father, Matthew R. Dealy

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

In this autoethnographic essay, I revisit memories from past experiences with my father in order to find new meanings that may have escaped me in the moments when we were together. These moments are times when I avoided connection with my father or when connection somehow avoided me. In an attempt to rebuild our relationship and prepare myself to be a better parent, I reframe our stories and question my creation of a fathering identity that rejects the father-son relationship I experienced. Finally, I try to reflexively look back on experiences with my father in order to heal and move …

Teaching An Old Jaw New Tricks: Diet-Induced Plasticity In A Model Organism, From Weaning To Adulthood, Jeremiah E. Scott, Kevin R. Mcabee, Meghan M. Eastman, Matthew J. Ravosa Nov 2014

Teaching An Old Jaw New Tricks: Diet-Induced Plasticity In A Model Organism, From Weaning To Adulthood, Jeremiah E. Scott, Kevin R. Mcabee, Meghan M. Eastman, Matthew J. Ravosa

Publications

Many organisms exhibit a decrease in the ability to modify their phenotypes in response to shifts in environmental conditions as they mature. Such age-dependent plasticity has important implications in a variety of evolutionary and ecological contexts, particularly with respect to understanding adaptive responses to heterogeneous environments. In this study we used experimental diet manipulation to examine the life-history trajectory of plasticity in the feeding complex of a model organism, the white rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). We demonstrate that, contrary to expectations derived from previous cross-sectional studies of skeletal plasticity, the jaws of weanlings and young adults exhibit similar increases …

The goal of the project was to present to administrators, coaches, and student-athletes at Division I institutions, some of the NCAA rules in a new, creative manner that helps understanding and retention of some of the current NCAA policies. The videos cover four topics: the safety exception, prospect visits, sports wagering, and social media. Each video covers some …

Measurement Of Field Complex Noise Using A Novel Acoustic Detection System, Jun Qin, Pengfei Sun, Jacob Walker Oct 2014

Measurement Of Field Complex Noise Using A Novel Acoustic Detection System, Jun Qin, Pengfei Sun, Jacob Walker

Conference Proceedings

This paper represents our recent experimental measurement study of the complex noise in industrial fields, using a novel acoustic detection system and wavelet transform algorithms. Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) continues to be one of the most prevalent occupational hazards in the United States. Number of research on NIHL showed a complex noise could produce more hearing loss than an energy-equivalent continuous or impulsive noise alone. Many workplaces in varied industries are subjected to the high level complex noise (i.e., high-level impulsive noise mixed with continuous Gaussian noise). The current noise measurement guidelines and devices (e.g., conventional sound level meters) …

Snp-E: A New Method For Multiple Sequence Alignments Analysis And Accurate Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Evaluation, David A. Lightfoot, Naghmeh Hemmati, Larry A. Sholeh

Articles

Identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and insertion-deletion mutations are important for discovering the connection between the genetic mutations and complex diseases. The objective of this study was to develop a sensitive and accurate computational method for SNP detection among Multiple Sequence Alignments (MSAs) to be run on Microsoft Office SuiteTM and WindowsTM. The SNP-Evaluator, was designed to simulate the process of human eye visual change-identification. Analysis of three 82-Kbp genomic loci derived from Sanger sequencing and the corresponding SNPs from 31 genomes from IlluminaTM sequencing of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) demonstrated that the SNP-E was an effective …

Development Of A Digital Noise Exposure System For Research On Noise Induced Hearing Loss, Jun Qin, Qing Wu, Jacob Walker, Kathleen Campbell, Daniel Fox Sep 2014

Development Of A Digital Noise Exposure System For Research On Noise Induced Hearing Loss, Jun Qin, Qing Wu, Jacob Walker, Kathleen Campbell, Daniel Fox

Conference Proceedings

Over thirty million Americans suffer from noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). Previous research demonstrated that different types of noises, even with equal sound energies, could produce different amounts of hearing loss. In this project, a novel digital noise exposure system has been developed for generating various noise signals (e.g. pure-tone, Gaussian, impulsive, and complex noise). The developed system can be used to study NIHL in animal models. The system could produce impulse noise with peak sound pressure level (SPL) up to 160 dB, which effectively mimics the noise generated by a military weapon (e.g., M-16 rifle). The preliminary results of …

Electrochemical Techniques For Subsecond Neurotransmitter Detection In Live Rodents., Kevin N Hascup, Erin R Hascup Aug 2014

Electrochemical Techniques For Subsecond Neurotransmitter Detection In Live Rodents., Kevin N Hascup, Erin R Hascup

Articles

Alterations in neurotransmission have been implicated in numerous neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders, including Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, epilepsy, and schizophrenia. Unfortunately, few techniques support the measurement of real-time changes in neurotransmitter levels over multiple days, as is essential for ethologic and pharmacodynamic testing. Microdialysis is commonly used for these research paradigms, but its poor temporal and spatial resolution make this technique inadequate for measuring the rapid dynamics (milliseconds to seconds) of fast signaling neurotransmitters, such as glutamate and acetylcholine. Enzymatic microelectrode arrays (biosensors) coupled with electrochemical recording techniques have demonstrated fast temporal resolution (less than 1 s), excellent spatial resolution …

Effect Of Optogenetic Stimulation On Neuroplasticity Of The Embryonic Chick Motor System, Ernest Kwesi Ofori Aug 2014

Effect Of Optogenetic Stimulation On Neuroplasticity Of The Embryonic Chick Motor System, Ernest Kwesi Ofori

Theses

There is growing knowledge that neuronal circuitry undergoes alteration throughout development. Experience plays a key role in the reorganization of neuronal circuitry through the various mechanisms of learning. For example, when an animal is deprived of sensory input such as light in one or both sides of the eye, it can result in blindness on that side. In a study of rats placed in either isolated or enriched environments, those placed in enriched environments performed better on learning tests (maze test) than those placed in isolated environment. There was increased neurogenesis, synaptogenesis, myelination and angiogenesis in rats placed in enriched …

Empire In The American West: A New Historicist Interrogation Of Narrative In Owen Wister's The Virginian, Willa Cather's Death Comes For The Archbishop, And Cormac Mccarthy's All The Pretty Horses, Brian Patrick Steinbach Aug 2014

Empire In The American West: A New Historicist Interrogation Of Narrative In Owen Wister's The Virginian, Willa Cather's Death Comes For The Archbishop, And Cormac Mccarthy's All The Pretty Horses, Brian Patrick Steinbach

Theses

This thesis explores the evolution of American Western narrative after the 1893 closing of the Western Frontier. Formerly representing a seemingly limitless fuel of symbolic growth, the frontier's closing threatened further national prosperity. Without new Western lands to conquer, narratives about the West began to be romanticized in a new way, selectively omitting non-Anglo narrative elements and presenting a more palatable West in the form of celebratory conquest. Ignoring its imperial roots, this new twentieth-century mythologization of the West became an increasingly ubiquitous narrative of America's honorable origins. Despite its ties to the perpetuation of empire, the pervasiveness of contemporary …

A Scale To Measure The Complexity And Perceptual-Cognitive Skills In Soccer, Maurici Abraham Lopez Felip Aug 2014

A Scale To Measure The Complexity And Perceptual-Cognitive Skills In Soccer, Maurici Abraham Lopez Felip

Theses

The complexity of dynamical systems (spanning brain, body and environment) can yield complex adaptive behaviors from non-linear interactions of individuals in space and time. A lack of reliable instruments to assess these varying behaviors results in inferences of how changes in behavior occurred over an extended period of time rather than being based on direct scientific measures. The aim of this study was to develop a scale of complexity and perceptual-cognitive skills' assessment in the sport soccer and to evaluate structural and criterion reliability. Based on the embodied cognition literature, the construct of this scale was identified with three dimensions …

Putting Men Back In The Menstrual Cycle: A Qualitative Analysis Of Men's Perceptions Of Menstruation, Katherine Fishman Aug 2014

Putting Men Back In The Menstrual Cycle: A Qualitative Analysis Of Men's Perceptions Of Menstruation, Katherine Fishman

Theses

Although menstruation is typically regarded as an indication of health (Kissling, 1996), strong cultural messages about menstruation perpetuate the belief that it is dirty, disgusting and a state that must be managed (Ussher, 2006). Many women internalize this belief and go to great lengths to hide their menstrual status (Chrisler, 2007). Negative attitudes toward menstruation have been linked to decreased body satisfaction (Schooler, Ward, Meriwether, & Caruthers, 2005), perceptions of decreased competence and likability (Roberts, Goldenberg, Power, & Pyszynski, 2002), and the belief that menstruating women are more emotional, less attractive, and more irritable than non-menstruating women (Forbes, Adams-Curtis, White, …

Saudi L2 Learners' Knowledge And Perceptions Of Academic English Slang, Anood Sarai Albalawi

Theses

This study investigated the extent to which Saudi students were interested in American academic slang terms and expressions. The goal of this study was to examine their knowledge and perceptions of academic slang as L2 learners living in the US. In this study, both qualitative and quantitative methodologies were employed. The data were retrieved via an online survey. A written questionnaire was completed by 50 undergraduate SIUC students from Saudi Arabia. The vocabulary task results showed that Saudi L2 learners do not have sufficient knowledge of American academic slang. Saudi students, especially females, revealed a positive attitude towards learning American …

Processing Trauma: Reading Art In 9/11 Novels, Karen Kruse Heinemann Aug 2014

Processing Trauma: Reading Art In 9/11 Novels, Karen Kruse Heinemann

Theses

While the negative effects of the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001 are still permeating throughout the United States, a few novelists have taken on the extreme task of writing about this historic event. Richard Gray describes the failure of language after the attack took place, yet novelists wanted to write about this tragedy anyway. Reading trauma in 9/11 is inevitable as it is important. In looking at three novels that deal with the events during and the aftermath of 9/11, I hope to consider the way art is used in these texts. In doing so, my thesis will look …

Regulation Of Glucose Metabolism By Alox8, Rabindra Karki Aug 2014

Regulation Of Glucose Metabolism By Alox8, Rabindra Karki

Theses

Type II diabetes is one of the leading cause of morbidity in the U.S. and other parts of the world. Insulin resistance which precedes Type II diabetes is a complex state of the body where the body fails to respond to insulin. Its complexity lies in its multifactorial origin that is to say various environmental and polygenic components come into play. Here we try to dissect one of these components - `Alox8' in transgenic mice and try to see if it affects blood glucose homeostasis. Comparison of glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity among sixteen mice comprising of six wild type, …

Pollution, Purification, And The Scapegoat: Religion And Violence In The Trial Of Socrates, Philip Brewer Aug 2014

Pollution, Purification, And The Scapegoat: Religion And Violence In The Trial Of Socrates, Philip Brewer

Theses

Despite its wide and unfortunate neglect (if it is even noticed at all), the fact that the date of Socrates' trial coincided with Athens's annual sacrificial festival (Thargelia) is of paramount significance for an interpretation not only of Plato's Apology but also of the historical trial itself. The argument presented here is that Socrates' prosecution and execution was, quite so, an expression of a sacrificial logic, which holds, mistakenly, that a single individual can be held responsible for a social crisis. The sacrificial narrative, then--a narrative implicitly put into play by that ominous trial date--would have located Socrates as the …

Induced Post-Activation Potentiation And Its Relationship To Performance Variables In The Block Start, Chidiriayi Enyia, Michael W. Olson

Research Papers

Post-activation potentiation (PAP) is an induced physical state commonly utilized in training and competition environments. There are a wide variety of methods used to induce PAP but the mechanisms and most effective means specific to the different speed/power events need to be investigated further for the potential of maximizing performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of drop jumps on maximum vertical ground reaction force on the push-off phase after the first touchdown step and its relationship to block start performance. Participants included 3 male and 3 female, Division I collegiate track and field athletes …

Building Social Change Through Interactive Webcomics, Sarah Shelton Jul 2014

Building Social Change Through Interactive Webcomics, Sarah Shelton

Research Papers

Comic books are a popular form of creative storytelling. Through sequential juxtaposed panels, comics have the unique ability to interact with the reader through time and space. The context within comics is the constrained amount of panels a typical comic book page allows, and the space that exists between the panels encourages the reader to manipulate meaning. Through this unique process of interaction between the narrative and the reader, comics have proven to be a creative medium to promote meanings of social change. Throughout history, comics have utilized their entertaining guise to mask underlying themes of social injustices and political …

Efficient Variable Step Size Approximations For Strong Solutions Of Stochastic Differential Equations With Additive Noise And Time Singularity, Harry Randolph Hughes, Pathiranage Lochana Siriwardena

Articles and Preprints

We consider stochastic differential equations with additive noise and conditions on the coefficients in those equations that allow a time singularity in the drift coefficient. Given a maximum step size, ℎ∗, we specify variable (adaptive) step sizes relative to ℎ∗ which decrease as the time node points approach the singularity. We use an Euler-type numerical scheme to produce an approximate solution and estimate the error in the approximation. When the solution is restricted to a fixed closed time interval excluding the singularity, we obtain a global pointwise error of order 𝑂(ℎ∗). An order of error …
