Quantitative Analysis Of Supporting Cell Subtype Labeling Among Creer Lines In The Neonatal Mouse Cochlea, Melissa M Mcgovern, Joseph Brancheck, Auston C Grant, Kaley A Graves, Brandon C Cox Apr 2017

Quantitative Analysis Of Supporting Cell Subtype Labeling Among Creer Lines In The Neonatal Mouse Cochlea, Melissa M Mcgovern, Joseph Brancheck, Auston C Grant, Kaley A Graves, Brandon C Cox

Articles

Four CreER lines that are commonly used in the auditory field to label cochlear supporting cells (SCs) are expressed in multiple SC subtypes, with some lines also showing reporter expression in hair cells (HCs). We hypothesized that altering the tamoxifen dose would modify CreER expression and target subsets of SCs. We also used two different reporter lines, ROSA26 (tdTomato) and CAG-eGFP, to achieve the same goal. Our results confirm previous reports that Sox2 (CreERT2) and Fgfr3-iCreER (T2) are not only expressed in neonatal SCs but also in HCs. Decreasing the tamoxifen dose did not reduce HC expression for Sox2 (CreERT2) …

Two types of resistant soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) sources are widely used against soybean cyst nematode (SCN, Heterodera glycines Ichinohe). These include Peking-type soybean, whose resistance requires both the rhg1-a and Rhg4 alleles, and PI 88788-type soybean, whose resistance requires only the rhg1-b allele. Multiple copy number of PI 88788-type GmSNAP18, GmAAT, and GmWI12 in one genomic segment simultaneously contribute to rhg1-b resistance. Using an integrated set of genetic and genomic approaches, we demonstrate that the rhg1-a Peking-type GmSNAP18 is sufficient for resistance to SCN in combination with Rhg4. The two SNAPs (soluble NSF attachment …

Characterization Of The Soluble Nsf Attachment Protein Gene Family Identifies Two Members Involved In Additive Resistance To A Plant Pathogen, Naoufal Lakhssassi, Shiming Liu, Sadia Bekal, Zhou Zhou, Kris Lambert, Abdelali Barakat, Khalid Meksem

Articles

Proteins with Tetratricopeptide-repeat (TPR) domains are encoded by large gene families and distributed in all plant lineages. This study aims to characterize a subfamily of TPR containing proteins named Soluble NSF-Attachment Protein (GmSNAP), of which GmSNAP18 has been reported to mediate resistance to soybean cyst nematode (SCN). This study uses a population of recombinant inbred lines from resistant and susceptible parents to analyse SNAP gene family divergence over time. Five members constitute the soybean SNAP gene family: GmSNAP18, GmSNAP11, GmSNAP14, GmSNAP02, and GmSNAP09. Phylogenetic analysis of genes from 22 diverse plant species showed that SNAP genes were distributed in …

Nematodes Associated With Mammals In The Great American Biotic Interchange (Gabi), F. Agustin Jimenez, Scott L Gardner, Juliana Notarnicola

Publications

The Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI) is a large-scale zoogeographic event that illustrates the exchange and diversification of mammals between North and South America. This phenomenon was accelerated by the connection of both landmasses during the Pliocene. Support for this phenomenon includes the extant distribution of xenarthrans, didelphiomorph marsupials, hystricognath and cricetine rodents, sciurids and carnivores, as well as the distribution of fossils in the stratigraphic record and the coalescence of genotypes. Contrasting with the relatively well-documented role and history of mammals in GABI, the role of their parasites has been largely neglected. As a consequence, the reconstructions of the …

Supporting Cells Remove And Replace Sensory Receptor Hair Cells In A Balance Organ Of Adult Mice, Stephanie A Bucks, Brandon C Cox, Brittany A Vlosich, James P Manning, Tot B Nguyen, Jennifer S Stone Mar 2017

Supporting Cells Remove And Replace Sensory Receptor Hair Cells In A Balance Organ Of Adult Mice, Stephanie A Bucks, Brandon C Cox, Brittany A Vlosich, James P Manning, Tot B Nguyen, Jennifer S Stone

Articles

Vestibular hair cells in the inner ear encode head movements and mediate the sense of balance. These cells undergo cell death and replacement (turnover) throughout life in non-mammalian vertebrates. However, there is no definitive evidence that this process occurs in mammals. We used fate-mapping and other methods to demonstrate that utricular type II vestibular hair cells undergo turnover in adult mice under normal conditions. We found that supporting cells phagocytose both type I and II hair cells. Plp1-CreER(T2)-expressing supporting cells replace type II hair cells. Type I hair cells are not restored by Plp1-CreER(T2)-expressing supporting cells or by Atoh1-CreER(TM)-expressing type …

Characterization Of The Fad2 Gene Family In Soybean Reveals The Limitations Of Gel-Based Tilling In Genes With High Copy Number, Naoufal Lakhssassi, Zhou Zhou, Shiming Liu, Vincent Colantonio, Amer Abughazaleh, Khalid Meksem

Articles

Soybean seed oil typically contains 18–20% oleic acid. Increasing the content of oleic acid is beneficial for health and biodiesel production. Mutations in FAD2-1 genes have been reported to increase seed oleic acid content. A subset of 1,037 mutant families from a mutagenized soybean cultivar (cv.) Forrest population was screened using reverse genetics (TILLING) to identify mutations within FAD2 genes. Although no fad2 mutants were identified using gel-based TILLING, four fad2-1A and one fad2-1B mutants were identified to have high seed oleic acid content using forward genetic screening and subsequent target sequencing. TILLING has been successfully used as a non-transgenic …

Intraspecific social behavior can be influenced by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. While much research has focused on how characteristics of individuals influence their roles in social networks, we were interested in the role that landscape structure plays in animal sociality at both individual (local) and population (global) levels. We used female white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Illinois, USA, to investigate the potential effect of landscape on social network structure by weighting the edges of seasonal social networks with association rate (based on proximity inferred from GPS collar data). At the local level, we found that sociality among …

Bellesiles’S Arming America Redux: Does The Gunning Of America Rewrite American History To Suit Modern Sensibilities?, Clayton E. Cramer

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Fifteen years ago, Michael Bellesiles’s Arming America was the darling of antigun intellectuals because it created an entirely new perception of the American relationship to guns.  It implicitly argued for a much narrower reading of the Second Amendment that was compliant with an America (then) that hated guns and did not own them.  Questions were soon raised about the accuracy of the statistics in Bellesiles’s articles and book, his honesty about where he researched documents, his widespread alteration of quotes, and his citations to documents that directly refuted his claims.  He rapidly went from tenured professor of history at Emory …

Comprehensive Groundwater Balance Development To Characterize Selenium Loading To Surface Water Channels In Orange County, California, Gregory Schnaar, John J. Dodge, Stephen J. Cullen Feb 2017

Comprehensive Groundwater Balance Development To Characterize Selenium Loading To Surface Water Channels In Orange County, California, Gregory Schnaar, John J. Dodge, Stephen J. Cullen

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Selenium concentrations are elevated above water quality criteria in several tributaries of Newport Bay. A watershed-scale hydrogeologic study was performed to identify processes driving selenium transport in the former "Swamp of the Frogs" area (cities of Santa Ana, Irvine, and Tustin). The former Swamp of the Frogs area was a depositional environment that historically received regional surface water runoff and accumulated naturally occurring selenium-bearing sediments from the larger watershed. Development beginning in the early 20 th century included surface water channel installation that lowered the water table and drained the wetland, mobilizing selenium. A comprehensive groundwater/surface water balance was conducted …

Issues Of Stream-Aquifer Interactions In Grout Lined Channels In Urban Watersheds, Barry Hibbs, Michael Harrison, Mercedes Merino Feb 2017

Issues Of Stream-Aquifer Interactions In Grout Lined Channels In Urban Watersheds, Barry Hibbs, Michael Harrison, Mercedes Merino

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Grout lined storm drains are used worldwide to convey storm runoff away from urban areas. They also convey dry weather flows such as car wash runoff, lawn runoff, and other "nuisance flows" in urban centers. Areas in Southern California and elsewhere have shallow water tables where dry weather flows in grout lined storm drains consist primarily of perennial groundwater baseflows. In these areas, groundwater leaks through cracks, joints, weepholes, and intentional dewatering structures into storm drains and eventually flows into natural channels, coastal wetlands, and estuaries. The "lined" sections of these channels are not always impervious; in fact, the lining …

Post Occupancy Evaluation An Academic Building: Lessons To Learn, Reza T. Ahmadi, Diana Saiki, Charles Ellis

Journal of Applied Sciences and Arts

Post occupancy evaluation (POE) is a tool used to determine the users’ satisfaction of a building after its completion. Most educational facilities do not conduct a post occupancy evaluation due to the absence of it in the contract agreement between the institution and architect. The client often chooses to bypass the POE to reduce the cost of the project. The purpose of this research is to conduct a POE of an academic building and identify areas of user dissatisfaction in order to enhance future projects. An academic building on a major, Midwestern university campus was remodeled during the academic year …

Localized Removal Affects White-Tailed Deer Space Use And Contacts, Marie I. Tosa, Eric M. Schauber, Clayton K. Nielsen Jan 2017

Localized Removal Affects White-Tailed Deer Space Use And Contacts, Marie I. Tosa, Eric M. Schauber, Clayton K. Nielsen

Transmission and impact of infectious diseases can be altered if host social structure is disrupted by disease outbreaks or lethal management. Specifically, if remnants of depopulated groups join or increase contact with neighboring groups, between-group transmission may increase even as population density decreases. We tested whether this phenomenon could apply to diseases of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) by using a before-after-control-impact design. We monitored space use and contacts among adult female and juvenile deer in southern Illinois during 2011–2014; midway through each study season, we removed all members except 1 collared deer from centrally located groups and left …

3D Printing is increasingly becoming a popular service provided by academic libraries throughout the United States. Many patrons have little or no awareness of this subject matter, so library staff have created LibGuides to promote resources. One hundred LibGuides from academic libraries were analyzed to find which types of resources and which specific titles are being promoted surrounding the subject of 3D printing. Three types of resources emerged in this study: 3D printing and 3D modeling software titles, 3D model repositories, and books related to 3D printing. This article lists and analyzes 3D printing resources.

Marriage Equality Laws Are A Threat To Religious Liberty, L. Darnell Weeden Jan 2017

Marriage Equality Laws Are A Threat To Religious Liberty, L. Darnell Weeden

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

The First Amendment of the United States Constitution contains dual concepts related to religion: freedom to believe and freedom to act.  Recent litigation, addressing the conflict between public accommodation of sexual orientation and religious liberty, reveals how legislative and judicial measures diminish the freedom to act in accordance with religious beliefs.  The Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which recognized that same-sex couples are afforded the fundamental right to marry, provided more uncertainty for religious liberty and incited debates as to whether this novel right is superior to the long-standing constitutional rights protecting religious liberty.

This Article examines …

The Impact Of Speculative Investments On Commodity Price, Samuel J. Hardwick Jan 2017

The Impact Of Speculative Investments On Commodity Price, Samuel J. Hardwick

Research Papers

Speculative investments have always been a component of the marketplace. Their existence is vital for providing liquidity and risk transfer, allowing for an efficiently operating market. The futures market was originally used by farmers and grain buyers to reduce risk. There has been an observable increase of noncommercial (speculative) investment since the inception of the futures market. There is a belief that these investors may be adversely affecting the market, considering their primary view of the market is as a financial instrument with no actual interest in the physical underlying commodity. Agencies such as the Commodity Futures Trading Commission have …

Factors Influencing Illinois Soybean Yield Increase, Sydney Bollinger Jan 2017

Factors Influencing Illinois Soybean Yield Increase, Sydney Bollinger

Research Papers

Soybean productivity is among many important topics currently in Illinois agriculture. With corn prices being so low the last few years, many people are relying on their soybean crop to produce very well. Also, with the increasing disapproval of genetically modified crops, it is important to recognize if these crops making a difference in production. It is obvious that weather plays a huge role in crop productivity. This research is intended to identify other specific variables that influence soybean yield in a given year. Much research has been done in the past identifying the weather variables that are most important …

Auditory Fatigue Model Applications To Predict Noise Induced Hearing Loss In Human And Chinchilla, Pengfei Sun, Daniel Fox, Kathleen Campbell, Jun Qin

Articles

Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) remains a severe health problem worldwide. Current noise metrics and models have assessment limitations on gradually developing NIHL (GDNIHL). In this study, we apply a complex velocity level (CVL) auditory fatigue model to quantitatively assess the impact of basilar membrane (BM) movement on GDNIHL. The transfer functions of chinchilla and human auditory systems, including the triple-path nonlinear (TRNL) filters to simulate the inner ear responses, are applied to obtain BM velocity distribution. Chinchilla and human experimental hearing loss data are used to validate the proposed CVL model’s effectiveness. The results reveal that the developed CVL …

A Classic Question Revisited In Red-Winged Blackbirds: Disentangling Confounding Hypotheses Surrounding Parental Investment Theory And Nest Defense Intensity, Justin J. Shew, Jorista Van Der Merwe, Eric M. Schauber, Briana K. Tallitsch, Clayton K. Nielsen Nov 2016

A Classic Question Revisited In Red-Winged Blackbirds: Disentangling Confounding Hypotheses Surrounding Parental Investment Theory And Nest Defense Intensity, Justin J. Shew, Jorista Van Der Merwe, Eric M. Schauber, Briana K. Tallitsch, Clayton K. Nielsen

Publications

The pattern of increased nest-defense effort over the course of a nesting season could result from 3 distinct (albeit non-exclusive) mechanisms: increased value of offspring to parents with progression towards independence (parental-investment theory), decreased opportunity for renesting (renesting-potential hypothesis), or decreased perceived costs of defense after repeated encounters with human observers (positive-reinforcement hypothesis). To gauge relative empirical support for each of these mechanisms, we disentangle these 3 often-confounded hypotheses using multi-model inference with mixed-model ordinal regression applied to an extensive red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) nesting data set (4,518 monitoring visits to 1,330 nests). Parent aggression was rated on …

Differences In Memory Functioning Between Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder And/Or Focal Epilepsy., Sylvia E Lee, Michelle Y Kibby, Morris J Cohen, Lisa Stanford, Yong Park, Suzanne Strickland

Publications

Prior research has shown that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and epilepsy are frequently comorbid and that both disorders are associated with various attention and memory problems. Nonetheless, limited research has been conducted comparing the two disorders in one sample to determine unique versus shared deficits. Hence, we investigated differences in working memory (WM) and short-term and delayed recall between children with ADHD, focal epilepsy of mixed foci, comorbid ADHD/epilepsy and controls. Participants were compared on the Core subtests and the Picture Locations subtest of the Children's Memory Scale (CMS). Results indicated that children with ADHD displayed intact verbal WM and long-term …
