United States governmental agencies, departments, and affiliates, are increasingly making 3D printable models available to the general public online. On March 20, 2014, a memorandum was sent out to United States executive departments and agencies about improving access to the government’s scientific collections (Holdren, 2014). This memorandum, from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), not only addressed physical collections, but specifically mentioned digital 3D models. On the White House’s blog, several reasons were given for making these collections more accessible including the idea that these collections are “… treasure troves of information ripe for exploration and …

Who Is Responsible When Someone Commits Suicide? An Examination Of Turcios V. Debruler Co., 2015 Il 117962, 32 N.E. 3d 1117, Kelly A. Meredith Oct 2016

Who Is Responsible When Someone Commits Suicide? An Examination Of Turcios V. Debruler Co., 2015 Il 117962, 32 N.E. 3d 1117, Kelly A. Meredith

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

When a person takes his own life, grieving loved ones often try to understand why.  Sometimes they blame themselves or the decedent’s mental health; in other situations, they may blame another person when circumstances suggest the decedent was pushed to commit suicide.  Interesting legal issues arise when a decedent’s family tries to hold a person legally liable for causing his suicide.  The Illinois Supreme Court faced these issues in Turcios v. DeBruler.

Illinois and other jurisdictions have traditionally held that an individual’s suicide is an unforeseeable, intervening cause.  This precludes plaintiffs from maintaining wrongful death actions against tortfeasors for …

Population-Level Responses Of Life History Traits To Flow Regime In Three Common Stream Fish Species, Micah G. Bennett, Matt R. Whiles, Gregory Whitledge Oct 2016

Population-Level Responses Of Life History Traits To Flow Regime In Three Common Stream Fish Species, Micah G. Bennett, Matt R. Whiles, Gregory Whitledge

Publications

Trait-based approaches may improve understanding in ecology by linking environmental variation to fitness-related characteristics of species. Most trait-environment studies focus on assemblage-level relationships; yet intraspecific trait variation is important for community, ecosystem, and evolutionary processes and has substantial implications for these approaches. Assessing population-level trait-environment relationships could test the generality of trait models while assessing intraspecific variation. We evaluated the generality of the trilateral life history model (TLHM of Winemiller and Rose 1992: opportunistic, periodic, and equilibrium endpoints) for fishes - a well-studied trait-environment model at the assemblage level - to populations of three stream fishes in the Midwestern United …

Earth To Congress—The Pharmaceutical Patent System Is Broken—Pharma Patents Need Their Own Set Of Rules, Amber N. Sanges Oct 2016

Earth To Congress—The Pharmaceutical Patent System Is Broken—Pharma Patents Need Their Own Set Of Rules, Amber N. Sanges

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Congress enacted the Hatch-Waxman Act to address rising healthcare costs, while further encouraging pharmaceutical innovation.  The Act allows generic drug manufacturers to bypass the lengthy and costly FDA approval process by relying on FDA approved brand name pharmaceuticals.  As a result, brand name pharmaceutical manufacturers have engaged in certain acts, such as reverse payment settlements, to maintain market control pursuant to their exclusive patent rights.  Therefore, this Act has resulted in a clash between brand name and generic pharmaceutical companies, which is harming consumers and implicating anti-trust concerns.  Accordingly, this Comment proposes that Congress enact legislation, so that pharmaceutical patents—as …

Heard It Through The Grapevine - Social Network Analysis Of A Hydrology Class, E. Annette Hernandez, Venkatesh Uddameri Aug 2016

Heard It Through The Grapevine - Social Network Analysis Of A Hydrology Class, E. Annette Hernandez, Venkatesh Uddameri

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Social network analysis (SNA) was investigated as an efficient way to understand the dynamics behind collaborative endeavors and group formation in project based courses. The SNA was applied to a junior level undergraduate engineering hydrology class with two sections taught by two professors with varying levels of structure. It was found that students tended to use formal sources of information (i.e., professor, teaching assistant, textbook, or class notes); however, the use depended on the amount of structure in the class. More independent students did not collaborate in assigned groups, preferring to self-select study groups. Furthermore, the less structured class created …

Building Watershed Management Capacity In Nigeria: Expanding The Role Of Agriculture Colleges, John W. Groninger Aug 2016

Building Watershed Management Capacity In Nigeria: Expanding The Role Of Agriculture Colleges, John W. Groninger

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Developing countries face many critical social, agricultural, and natural resource-related issues where watershed management plays a prominent role. Short-term gains in productivity often occur at the expense of long term system resiliency needed to achieve sustainability. Post-secondary (tertiary) education institutions are underfunded and hampered by bureaucratic inertia limiting their relevance toward addressing emerging water resources concerns. As populations urbanize, rural constituencies continue to lose influence. Using the case of Samaru College of Agriculture, part of Ahmadu Bello University in north-central Nigeria, this paper identifies institutional challenges and suggests solutions to help similar institutions better address watershed management issues. Given current …

The dogs in the 95% curcumin group had an overall greater significance in pain reduction by Day 60. Exp. 2, was a follow-up experiment to Exp. …

The Relationship Between Fructose And The Metabolic Syndrome Risk Factors, Lauren C. Kania Aug 2016

The Relationship Between Fructose And The Metabolic Syndrome Risk Factors, Lauren C. Kania

Research Papers

Up until the last few decades, fructose was pretty much nonexistent in the human diet. Today it can be found in various processed foods and beverages including soft drinks, juice, and baked goods. These products comprise a large proportion of the human diet these days and consumption is high in children, adolescents, and young adults. Naturally, fructose is found in plant sources such as fruits and sugar cane. Today, high fructose corn syrup is used as a sweetener in many processed foods and drinks such as soda and fruit juices. High fructose corn syrups’ low production cost has increased its’ …

Funeral Home Or Ritualistic Edifice? An Assessment Of An Enigmatic Structure At The Late Pre-Hispanic Site Of Panquilma, Central Coast Peru, Alysia Ashley Leon Aug 2016

Funeral Home Or Ritualistic Edifice? An Assessment Of An Enigmatic Structure At The Late Pre-Hispanic Site Of Panquilma, Central Coast Peru, Alysia Ashley Leon

Theses

Mortuary remains within an archaeological context can illuminate the social and political aspects not only of the individual(s) buried, but also of the living who interred them. Although this is so, a consensus has not been reached in regard to the following questions: how can we determine the social identity of the living that interred the dead? What are the implications of the living-dead interaction, and how do mortuary practices alter social memory in order to fit political needs? This thesis constitutes an initial attempt to answer these questions while examining pre-internment mortuary practices, and associated ideologies regarding the afterlife …

The Effect Of Stereoscopic Three-Dimensional Images On Recall Of Second Language Vocabulary, Regina Kaplan-Rakowski Aug 2016

The Effect Of Stereoscopic Three-Dimensional Images On Recall Of Second Language Vocabulary, Regina Kaplan-Rakowski

Dissertations

The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the effect of stereoscopic three-dimensional (S3D) images on productive and receptive recall of foreign language vocabulary. S3D images are highly-realistic and differ from non-stereoscopic three-dimensional (NS3D) images in that they provide the impression of the added third dimension of depth. This within-subject study exposed the participants (N = 82) in a controlled setting to a series of carefully designed and randomly distributed NS3D and S3D images. The subjects were then given immediate productive and receptive tests of foreign language vocabulary items that were represented by NS3D and S3D images. Quantitative data …

Do River Otters Conform To Habitat Suitability Assessments?, Angela Holland, Jorista Van Der Merwe Jun 2016

Do River Otters Conform To Habitat Suitability Assessments?, Angela Holland, Jorista Van Der Merwe

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

River otters ( Lontra canadensis ) were reintroduced from 1994-1996 into parts of Illinois where the species was extirpated due to over harvest and habitat loss. At the time of reintroduction, managing for the persistence of the population through habitat was very important and research was conducted to determine which watersheds had quality habitat and which needed increased management and protection. In a study conducted in the mid-1990s, biologists used pattern recognition (PATREC) modeling to identify high and low quality habitat for river otters at the subunit level (i.e., divided watershed), based on specific habitat attributes including wooded area, sinuosity, …

Impacts Of Pollutants On Beavers And Otters With Implications For Ecosystem Ramifications, Elizabeth K. Peterson, Bruce A. Schulte Jun 2016

Impacts Of Pollutants On Beavers And Otters With Implications For Ecosystem Ramifications, Elizabeth K. Peterson, Bruce A. Schulte

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Anthropogenic pollution has impacted ecosystems and organisms globally. Aquatic freshwater systems are of particular concern because of their importance to human health and livelihoods. Sentinel species can serve as indicators for both individual and population-level health risks to both wildlife and humans, and therefore facilitate the mitigation and prevention of such contamination. When such species are also keystone species and/or ecological engineers in aquatic ecosystems, understanding the influence of pollutants on their physiology and behavior acquires added importance. Given that river otters ( Lontra canadensis and Lutra lutra ) and beavers ( Castor canadensis and C. fiber ) serve such …

Modeling Population Growth And Response To Harvest For River Otters In Illinois, Clayton K. Nielsen Jun 2016

Modeling Population Growth And Response To Harvest For River Otters In Illinois, Clayton K. Nielsen

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Population modeling is an invaluable tool for predicting wildlife population dynamics and the effects of management. I created a state-space population model for unharvested river otters in the Illinois, Kaskaskia, and Wabash river basins in Illinois, and modeled future harvest at 5%, 10%, and 20% levels. River otter populations increased in the absence of harvest during 2000-2009 to 8,408 ± 1,934 individuals (λ = 1.11 ± 0.09). Harvest at 0%, 5%, 10%, and 20% levels resulted in continued population growth over time, with annual harvest numbers ranging from 446 - 1,786 in 2010 to 884 - 2,614 in 2014, depending …

Wildlife Habitat Is Similar At Mined Versus Unmined Sites 30 Years Following Surface Mining For Coal In Southern Illinois, Clayton K. Nielsen, Veronica L. Kelly Jun 2016

Wildlife Habitat Is Similar At Mined Versus Unmined Sites 30 Years Following Surface Mining For Coal In Southern Illinois, Clayton K. Nielsen, Veronica L. Kelly

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Riparian ecosystems provide important habitat for wildlife and serve as corridors for animal movements. Surface mining activities clearly impact wildlife habitat by removing vegetation needed by wildlife. However, few studies have assessed longer-term success of habitat restoration in riparian ecosystems following surface mining. During 2012-13, we evaluated microhabitat quality at three stream segments restored 30 years ago following surface mining for coal and one unmined stream segment in Perry County, Illinois. Microhabitat differences were very minor among restored and control stream sites. Of the 41 habitat variables measured, 14 differed among sites, four of which were uncorrelated: canopy cover, overstory …

Decher, C. R. Gray, J. C. Garteh, C. W. Kilpatrick, H. J. Kuhn, B. Phalan, A. Monadjem, B. Kadjo, F. Jacquet, C. Denys

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

New records of the endemic semi-aquatic Nimba Otter Shrew Micropotamogale lamottei (Tenrecidae, Potamogalinae) were obtained during recent Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) in Liberia. We discuss the future of this Evolutionary Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) species in the face of large-scale landscape transformations. In an attempt to assess genetic diversity and genetic differentiation of M. lamottei throughout its distributional range, we examined two mitochondrial loci (cytochrome b and 12S rRNA) from five samples of Nimba Otter Shrews at three localities in Liberia and compared the 12S sequences with a GenBank sequence from Cote d'Ivoire. While all six individuals examined had …

Preparing For Baby Boomers As An Agri-Tourism Market, Anthony Agbeh, Elaine T. Jurkowski

Peer-reviewed Articles

The tsunami of baby boomers has led to an increase in people over the age of 60 traveling, and venturing to rural and agri-tourism environments or settings. Coupled with this new trend, is an increase in the number of travelers with disabilities or mobility impairments, who have comfortably traveled domestically through accommodations, afforded through the Americans’ with Disabilities Act. The advent of the agri-tourism industry now can utilize many of these accommodations expected by baby boomers. This paper addresses current issues and recommends strategies to intervene in order to meet the needs of the agri tourism market in the United …

Fatty Acid Profiles Are Biomarkers Of Fish Habitat Use In A River-Floodplain Ecosystem, Neil P. Rude, Jesse T. Trushenski, Gregory Whitledge Jun 2016

Fatty Acid Profiles Are Biomarkers Of Fish Habitat Use In A River-Floodplain Ecosystem, Neil P. Rude, Jesse T. Trushenski, Gregory Whitledge

Publications

Fatty acid (FA) analyses of fish tissues offer the potential to gain new knowledge of habitat or forage-specific energy inputs to fishes in river-floodplain ecosystems, although limited information exists regarding among-habitat differences in FA biomarkers. The goal of this study was to determine if differences in fish FA profiles among main channel and connected and disconnected floodplain lakes exist in large river-floodplain systems. Bluegill Lepomis macrochirus FA profiles were generated to assess differences among two reaches of the Illinois River, USA, and its connected and disconnected floodplain lakes and determine whether FA signatures could be used to reclassify fish to …

Using Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy To Discriminate Among Water Contamination Levels In Diesel Engine Oil, Ali M. Abdul-Munaim, Marco Reuter, Oday M. Abdulmunem, Jan C. Balzer, Martin Koch, Dennis G. Watson

Articles

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) in the range of 0.5 to 2.0 THz was evaluated for discriminating among water contamination levels (0%, 0.1%, and 0.2%) in diesel engine oil (SAE 15W-40). The absorption coefficient demonstrated potential to discriminate among the three water contamination levels with significant differences among all three levels across the 1.111 to 1.332 THz and 1.669 to 1.934 THz ranges. At each of these frequency ranges, each water contamination level was significantly different from the other two. The 0% water contamination level had the lowest absorption coefficient, while 0.2% water had the highest absorption coefficient. The refractive index …
