Survey Of Rainwater Catchment Use And Practices On Hawaii Island, Mary J. Donohue, Patricia S.H. Macomber, Darren Okimoto, Darren T. Lerner
Survey Of Rainwater Catchment Use And Practices On Hawaii Island, Mary J. Donohue, Patricia S.H. Macomber, Darren Okimoto, Darren T. Lerner
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
The harvesting of rainwater for domestic use on Hawaii Island is widespread, particularly in areas not served by municipal water. Rainwater catchment is currently unregulated in Hawaii with the responsibility of installing and maintaining appropriate systems on owners and users. Well-designed and maintained rainwater catchment systems are more likely to provide water free of pathogens than poorly designed or maintained systems. We conducted outreach to rural Hawaii Island communities on rainwater catchment best practices and explored household uses and practices associated with these systems via survey of 110 individuals. Nearly 90% (N=96) of all survey respondents used harvested rainwater as …

Clean Water, Clean Life: Promoting Healthier, Accessible Water In Rural Appalachia, Erin Arcipowski, John Schwartz, Lisa Davenport, Meghan Hayes, Tracy Nolan
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
In the rural Appalachian region of the United States, thousands of residents struggle with issues of water quality and accessibility. Vulnerabilities of poverty, isolation, and rough geographical terrain complicate life for Appalachians who need access to adequate water supply and septic systems. In 2013, an inter-professional team of nursing, architecture, engineering, and law enforcement faculty and students developed a water-focused collaboration with community members in southeastern Kentucky. Greater accessibility to clean drinking water is a critical need in the area. Collaborative community engagement yielded effective and sustainable interventions. Inter-professional teams completed N=30 comprehensive home assessments examining factors such as water …

Inhibitory Control And Its Relation To Personality/Temperament, Executive Function, And The Brain, Sarah Mailander Dyer
Inhibitory Control And Its Relation To Personality/Temperament, Executive Function, And The Brain, Sarah Mailander Dyer
Dissertations
Inhibitory control, described as the ability to suppress one response in favor of a goal-directed response, is thought to play an important role in the development of emotional regulation as well as various forms of psychopathology, including ADHD. Up until very recently, inhibitory control has been researched within two completely separate fields of study: temperament and neuropsychology. In the temperament/personality literature, inhibitory control is a major component of the overarching temperament/personality factor of Effortful Control/Conscientiousness. In the field of neuropsychology, inhibitory control is considered one aspect of executive function. Further complicating the current understanding of inhibitory control is the complexity …

Summer Habitat Use By A Mammal Community Of An Oak-Dominated Ecosystem In The Central Hardwood Region, Brent Steven Pease
Summer Habitat Use By A Mammal Community Of An Oak-Dominated Ecosystem In The Central Hardwood Region, Brent Steven Pease
Theses
In the greater Central Hardwood Region, advance regeneration of oak (Quercus spp.) and hickory (Carya spp.) has been in decline for several decades. Facilitated in part by an abrupt change in disturbance regime, coupled with an increase in herbivore density, the existing mid-successional, mast-producing species are being outcompeted by late-successional, mesophytic species. Oak-hickory forests provide keystone resources for a diverse forest wildlife community, and a decline in its dominance will likely impact habitat use and occupancy patterns in the mammal community, but to what extent is unclear. During May-August 2015-2016, I deployed 150 remotely-triggered camera traps in Trail of Tears …

Cognitive function declines with age and appears to correlate with decreased cerebral metabolic rate (CMR). Caloric restriction, an antiaging manipulation that extends life-span and can preserve cognitive function, is associated with decreased glucose uptake, decreased lactate levels, and increased ketone body (KB) levels in the brain. Since the majority of brain nutrients come from the periphery, this study examined whether the capacity to regulate peripheral glucose levels and KB production differs in animals with successful cognitive aging (growth hormone receptor knockouts, GHRKOs) versus unsuccessful cognitive aging (the 3xTg-AD mouse model of Alzheimer's disease). Animals were fasted for 5 hours with …

Assessing Models Of Arsenic Occurrence In Drinking Water From Bedrock Aquifers In New Hampshire, Caroline M. Andy, Maria Florencia Fahnestock, Melissa A. Lombard, Laura Hayes, Julia G. Bryce, Joseph D. Ayotte
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Three existing multivariate logistic regression models were assessed using new data to evaluate the capacity of the models to correctly predict the probability of groundwater arsenic concentrations exceeding the threshold values of 1, 5, and 10 micrograms per liter (µg/L) in New Hampshire, USA. A recently released testing dataset includes arsenic concentrations from groundwater samples collected in 2004–2005 from a mix of 367 public-supply and private domestic wells. The use of this dataset to test three existing logistic regression models demonstrated enhanced overall predictive accuracy for the 5 and 10 μg/L models. Overall accuracies of 54.8, 76.3, and 86.4 percent …
Dating_Missrepresentation.Com: Black Women's Lived Love-Hate Relationship With Online Dating, James Henry Johnson
Dating_Missrepresentation.Com: Black Women's Lived Love-Hate Relationship With Online Dating, James Henry Johnson
Dissertations
The increased use of online dating sites has further encouraged corporations’ attempts to capitalize on these mate-seeking trends. Match.com, eHarmony, and OkCupid are primary competitors in a growing market of individuals seeking out potential romantic partners. They offer several mainstream dating options as well as niche-dating sites. Similar to society at large where dating still occurs offline, scholars have revealed that racial hierarchies exist within various online platforms. As such, the roles of gender and ethnicity in online dating environments merit study. Specifically, the experiences of Black women who use Internet dating sites, a virtually unexplored demographic, form the basis …
Curating Curiosity: The Evolution Of Museological Theory In The Late Seventeenth Century At The Bibliothèque De Sainte-Geneviève, Erin L. Anderson
Curating Curiosity: The Evolution Of Museological Theory In The Late Seventeenth Century At The Bibliothèque De Sainte-Geneviève, Erin L. Anderson
Honors Theses
The evolution of museological theory at the Bibliotheque de Sainte-Genevieve marks a transition in the history of collecting during the early modern period. Although the contents of the collection remained largely unchanged from earlier Wunderkammern, the acquisition, display, and organization of artifacts within the cabinet had evolved tremendously by the end of the 17th century and one can begin to see the collection as a predecessor of modern museological methodologies.

Reevaluating Essential Fatty Acid Nutrition In Florida Pompano, Trachinotus Carolinus, And Nile Tilapia, Oreochromis Niloticus, Christopher John Jackson
Theses
Aquaculture is currently the fastest growing sector of protein production, and is expected to overtake the harvest of wild fisheries. Limitations in nutrition, specifically fatty acid nutrition, are preventing even more dramatic growth of many species of commercial importance. Currently, much of the research involving fatty acids examines requirements as being correlated to thermal guilds (warm vs. cool water) or salinity tolerance (marine vs. freshwater). However, recent studies have revealed the potential for trophic level to be as much, if not more, influential in determining fatty acid requirements of a species. As such, two feeding trials were conducted to determine …
Importance Of Concentrated Flow Paths In Agricultural Watersheds Of Southern Illinois, Prabisha Shrestha
Importance Of Concentrated Flow Paths In Agricultural Watersheds Of Southern Illinois, Prabisha Shrestha
Theses
Field scale research shows concentrated flow paths (CFPs) are prevalent in agricultural watersheds. They are an important source of soil erosion in cropland and significantly contribute to the transport and delivery of agricultural pollutants such as sediment and nutrients to nearby water resources. High resolution LiDAR data have enabled the investigation of the prevalence of concentrated flow at a large geographic extent. This study focused on identifying CFPs in 389 agricultural fields in Jackson County in southern Illinois and estimating the contribution of the CFPs to drainage of the fields. Addressing the lack of literature on factors influencing CFP characteristics, …

Effect Of Habitat Management On Dabbling Ducks During Spring Migration In Southwest Indiana, John Michael Lindstrom
Effect Of Habitat Management On Dabbling Ducks During Spring Migration In Southwest Indiana, John Michael Lindstrom
Theses
Historically, management for migratory waterfowl was focused around providing hunting opportunity each fall. More recently habitat during spring migration has received attention as a potentially limiting factor for some species of waterfowl, considering the carry-over effects that have been observed in both capital and income breeders. Habitat needs have been compounded by the flashy flood events that now occur in the highly modified landscape. The discovery of carry-over effects has led to an increase in habitat management actions and a diversification of available management strategies. In my study I hoped to identify the best management strategies for spring migratory waterfowl. …
Comparative Assessment Of Agricultural Literacy In Selected K-5 Classrooms Employing Agriculture In The Classroom Methodologies: A Solomon Four-Group Analysis, Mary Margaret Fischer
Comparative Assessment Of Agricultural Literacy In Selected K-5 Classrooms Employing Agriculture In The Classroom Methodologies: A Solomon Four-Group Analysis, Mary Margaret Fischer
Dissertations
The significance of agriculture to future generations is unparalleled. The United Nations projects the global population to swell to 9.75 billion people by 2050, and to proliferate to 11.2 billion by 2100. The non-agricultural population has little to no understanding or comprehension of the complexities of sustaining a viable agricultural system. Agricultural literacy is an area often unseen and rarely discussed outside specific agricultural disciplines. Society does not view agriculture as being important, yet it is important that society be properly educated on issues in order to reach well-informed decisions and render prudent choices that impact the world around them. …
Reviewing Biochar Research And Introducing A Possible Classification System, Patricia G. Burns
Reviewing Biochar Research And Introducing A Possible Classification System, Patricia G. Burns
Research Papers
Biochar is the product of burning biomass, such as hardwood, rice hulls, bamboo, or even chicken litter, in a low- to no-oxygen environment. The result is a black carbon skeletal-like structure of the original biomass.
Research into biochar as a soil amendment has been influenced by the study of anthropogenic dark, richly fertile soils found in the Amazon rainforest where the native forest soil is acidic and low in fertility. Biochar research for amending agricultural soils is relatively new but there are strong indications that this practice can decrease the need for additional fertilizer and water inputs.
Biochar products will …
Predictors Of Land Value Sold At Auction In Richland, Edwards, And Lawrence Illinois Counties, Alexis N. Rothrock
Predictors Of Land Value Sold At Auction In Richland, Edwards, And Lawrence Illinois Counties, Alexis N. Rothrock
Research Papers
With increasing land prices and high inputs prices, it is essential for farmers and investors to understand the land-specific determinants that drive value. A growing population and less farmable acres increases the need for a better understanding of the variables that may impact selling price. By implementing the auction method to sell land, the landowner is thought to receive the market price for the land sold on a specific time, date, and location. However, there has been very little research that describes the relationship between land variables and selling price when land is sold at auction. This study explores the …

A Comparison Study Of Saliency Models For Fixation Prediction On Infants And Adults, Ali Mahdi, Mei Su, Matthew Schlesinger, Jun Qin
Articles
Various saliency models have been developed over the years. The performance of saliency models is typically evaluated based on databases of experimentally recorded adult eye fixations. Although studies on infant gaze patterns have attracted much attention recently, saliency based models have not been widely applied for prediction of infant gaze patterns. In this study, we conduct a comprehensive comparison study of eight state-ofthe- art saliency models on predictions of experimentally captured fixations from infants and adults. Seven evaluation metrics are used to evaluate and compare the performance of saliency models. The results demonstrate a consistent performance of saliency models predicting …

Community Gardens And Ecological Citizenship: Their Potential And Limitations In Fostering Environmentalism, Michael J. Kennedy
Research Papers
Mainstream agricultural and food production methods are a major source of environmental degradation, which has not been addressed by large-scale and global initiatives. Alternatively, grassroots and local initiatives may be more effective at alleviating the causes of environmental degradation associated with food and agriculture. Specifically, community gardens are an important local greenspace that can be used to address and educate individuals about the importance of food and the environment. However, certain barriers need to be overcome and addressed before community gardens are successfully implement. The participation and interaction at community gardens may provide a pathway to long-term commitment to sustainability, …

The Enviromental Impact On Volunteer Soilders In The Mexican American War, Jean M. Hurst
The Enviromental Impact On Volunteer Soilders In The Mexican American War, Jean M. Hurst
Research Papers
The Mexican-American War is largely overshadowed by historians of the War of 1812 and the Civil War. This conflict demands an in-depth examination as a unique historical event. Scholars of the Mexican-American War have largely limited their approach to underscore how social and political relations, among American military and political elite, shaped the conflict as a causeway to the American Civil War. To better understand the Mexican-American war it is necessary to understand it through the experiences of those volunteer solders living during this conflict. In addition, understanding the role the environment played in shaping the social and political relations …
