Blue, Green, And Grey Water Quantification Approaches: A Bibliometric And Literature Review, Stanley T. Mubako

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

An array of methodologies to quantify blue, green, and grey water have emerged in recent years and are still evolving rapidly, as are efforts to come up with reliable indicators of human appropriation of freshwater resources. This study provides an overview of recent blue, green, and grey water quantification approaches by analyzing publications extracted from the Web of Science database utilizing the Network Analysis Interface for Literature Studies (NAILS) bibliometric analysis tool, covering the period 2000-2018. A steep increase in the number of blue, green, and grey water publications was observed from the year 2009, with the United States and …

Revealing The Role Of Short Chain And Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids As Regulators Of Metabolic Activity And Gene Expression In Ovarian Cancer, Abigayle Ochs Jan 2019

Revealing The Role Of Short Chain And Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids As Regulators Of Metabolic Activity And Gene Expression In Ovarian Cancer, Abigayle Ochs

Honors Theses

Abstract

Previous research using the chicken model has provided evidence that a flaxseed-supplemented diet decreases both the severity and the incidence of ovarian cancer. Flaxseed is a source of omega-3 (OM3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), particularly α-linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is converted into longer chain OM3s, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which inhibit prostaglandins, thereby inhibiting oxidative stress, inflammation, angiogenesis, and proliferation. The dietary fiber component of flaxseed can be fermented in the gut to produce short chain fatty acids (SCFA). Butyric acid, a commonly studied SCFA, has been shown be an important metabolic regulator by acting as …

Insurmountable Burdens And Slippery Slopes: A Solution For Pleading Toxic Torts In The Plausibility Era, Zachry Sandifer Jan 2019

Insurmountable Burdens And Slippery Slopes: A Solution For Pleading Toxic Torts In The Plausibility Era, Zachry Sandifer

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

With its decisions in Bell Atlantic Corp. v. Twombly and Ashcroft v. Iqbal in 2007 and 2009, the Supreme Court ushered in a new era of federal pleading standards. The old system of notice pleading was replaced by what has become known as plausibility pleading. In order to avoid dismissal, plaintiffs must now craft their complaints so that all nonconclusory allegations, taken as true, give rise to a claim that is plausible on its face. Immediately after the Court’s decision in Twombly, a heated debate arose in the legal community over many aspects of the new pleading standard. Did it …

“The Future Is In Good Hands”: A Pentadic Analysis Of President Barack Obama’S Farewell Address, R. Chase Dunn Dec 2018

“The Future Is In Good Hands”: A Pentadic Analysis Of President Barack Obama’S Farewell Address, R. Chase Dunn

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

President Barack Obama’s farewell address serves as a symbolic end to an eight-year tenure as president of the United States. The standard themes in Obama’s public addresses have been hope and change, and the president continues to elaborate on those here. While describing accomplishments of his administration and thanking important people, Obama uses his last address as president to craft a narrative in three strands—past, present, and future—meant to inspire civic engagement in his audience. I use Burke’s dramatistic pentad to discover how Obama rhetorically motivates his listeners towards this end. President Obama creates a sense of empowerment and audience …

The Great Divide: What Dr. Moreau Tells Us About Posthumanism And The Anthropocene, Cynthia Rosenfeld Dec 2018

The Great Divide: What Dr. Moreau Tells Us About Posthumanism And The Anthropocene, Cynthia Rosenfeld

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This critique of three films of The Island of Dr. Moreau, a classic story that keeps resurfacing in popular culture, aims to shed light on the geologic era in which we live, the Anthropocene. What do these films reveal about the Western conceptualization of the differences between “human” and “animal,” and what does this conceptualization reveal about the Anthropocene? The post-human analysis primarily employs concepts from Lacan, Derrida, and Eagleton, and includes a detailed look at the role of language. Dr. Moreau’s conceit of human uniqueness (and superiority) fosters the kind of thinking that allows humanity to ignore the …

Documentary Production As A Site Of Struggle: State, Capital, And Precarity In The Contemporary Chinese Documentary, Jiachun Hong Dec 2018

Documentary Production As A Site Of Struggle: State, Capital, And Precarity In The Contemporary Chinese Documentary, Jiachun Hong

Dissertations

Documentary filmmakers have been considered artists, authors, or intellectuals, but rarely as labor. This study investigates how the nature of work as well as life is changing for those who work in the expanding area of TV documentary in China, in the midst of China’s shift towards a market-based economy. How do documentary makers reconcile their passion for documentary making with the increasingly precarious conditions of work? And, how do they cope with and resist the pressures of neoliberalism to survive in increasingly competitive local and global markets? Based on data gathered through the interviews with 40 practitioners from January …

AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF BELAN M. KHALIL, for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Plant Biology, presented July 11, 2018, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: ANALYSIS OF THE CIS-REGULATORY ELEMENT LEXICON IN UPSTREAM GENE PROMOTERS OF ARABIDOPSIS THALIANA AND ORYZA SATIVA. MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr Matt Geisler Gene expression in plants is partly regulated through an interaction of trans-acting factors with the promoter regions of the gene. Trans-acting factor binding sites consist of short nucleotide sequences most often present in the upstream promoter region. These binding sites, the cis-regulatory elements (CREs), vary in structure, complexity and function. In …

Planning The Reintroduction Of The Clouded Leopard (Neofelis Nebulosa) To Taiwan: An Assessment Of Attitudes And Potential Support, Evan Greenspan Dec 2018

Planning The Reintroduction Of The Clouded Leopard (Neofelis Nebulosa) To Taiwan: An Assessment Of Attitudes And Potential Support, Evan Greenspan

Theses

Large felid populations are in decline globally and wildlife managers have increasingly used reintroductions as a conservation tool, yet few studies have assessed public attitudes towards potential large felid reintroduction candidates prior to release. The clouded leopard was recently declared extinct in Taiwan; however, a reintroduction effort is ecologically feasible and success largely depends on resident attitudes towards clouded leopards and support for its reintroduction. In 2017, 263 semi-structured interviews with indigenous locals were conducted in southern Taiwan and an internet questionnaire was distributed to 500 urban residents for comparison. Rural and urban attitudes were 67% and 76% positive toward …

A Survey And Use-Wear Analysis Of Wickliffe Thick Pottery In The Southeastern United States, Anthony P. Farace

Theses

The Wickliffe Thick pottery type, an unusual vessel with a globular body, thick wall, and funnel-like opening at the bottom, has been assumed to be related to salt production and/or juice pressing. The following project presents the results of a use-wear analysis in order to understand Wickliffe Thick’s possible uses demonstrating that past conclusions likely need revision. A systematic, macroscopic analysis of ceramic sherds from more than 20 Mississippian sites throughout Kentucky, Missouri, and Illinois are included in the study. Use-wear on the samples occur in a low frequency. Although other factors such as a white efflorescence, and Wickliffe Thick’s …

Diet-Induced Insulin Resistance Elevates Hippocampal Glutamate As Well As Vglut1 And Gfap Expression In Aβpp/Ps1 Mice., Erin R Hascup, Sarah O Broderick, Mary K Russell, Yimin Fang, Andrzej Bartke, Heather A Boger, Kevin N Hascup

Articles

The symptomologies of Alzheimer's disease (AD) develop over decades suggesting modifiable lifestyle factors may contribute to disease pathogenesis. In humans, hyperinsulinemia associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus increases the risk for developing AD and both diseases share similar age-related etiologies including amyloidogenesis. Since we have demonstrated that soluble Aβ42 elicits glutamate release, we wanted to understand how diet-induced insulin resistance alters hippocampal glutamate dynamics, which are important for memory formation and consolidation. Eight to twelve-week-old C57BL/6J and AβPP/PS1 mice were placed on either a low-fat diet or high-fat diet (HFD) for 8 months. A HFD led to significant weight …

Analyzing Gun-Violence-Prevention Taxes Under Emerging Firearm Fee Jurisprudence, Hannah E. Shearer, Allison S. Anderman Oct 2018

Analyzing Gun-Violence-Prevention Taxes Under Emerging Firearm Fee Jurisprudence, Hannah E. Shearer, Allison S. Anderman

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Gun and ammunition taxes and fees have long been used to fund wildlife conservation programs and regulatory schemes that ensure guns are being purchased and possessed lawfully. In recent years, taxes have been proposed as a policy tool to help mitigate the staggering social and economic costs of gun violence by providing a reliable source of funding for gun safety and violence prevention programs. These proposed “gun-violence-prevention taxes” have been met with opposition, including from Second Amendment litigants who argue that courts should strike down gun and ammunition taxes under the Supreme Court’s First Amendment fee jurisprudence—a body of cases …

Succession Of An Upland Oak/Hickory Forest In The Central Hardwood Region, Nathan Hoover Aug 2018

Succession Of An Upland Oak/Hickory Forest In The Central Hardwood Region, Nathan Hoover

Theses

For the last 9,000-10,000 years the Central Hardwood Region (CHR) has been primarily composed of a mosaic of mesophytic communities in climax and communities of successional forest types dominated by oak (Quercus Linnaeus) and hickory (Carya Nuttall). Shade intolerant oak/hickory dominated forest types have been maintained by natural disturbance processes in synergy with anthropogenic causes, resulting in a large composition of communities which are neither at climatic nor edaphic climax. Reduction in fire events, thinning, forest grazing, and other disturbance processes over the last 80-100 years have coincided with decreased regeneration of shade intolerant species due to lack of adequate …

Prediction Of Clinical Symptoms And Psychological Flexibility Using A Novel Values Card Sort Activity, Ryan S. Kimball Aug 2018

Prediction Of Clinical Symptoms And Psychological Flexibility Using A Novel Values Card Sort Activity, Ryan S. Kimball

Theses

Values are directly relevant in a number of theoretical orientations in psychology, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). In ACT, clarification of one’s personal values is paramount. The present study examined the ability to predict clinical symptoms and psychological flexibility using variables derived from one’s performance on the ACT Values Card Sort (ACT-VCS), a novel values clarification exercise. The independent variables, obtained from the ACT-VCS, included 1) the number of values endorsed as very important in the initial sort (i.e., valuing propensity), 2) the number of values domains represented in the final sort (i.e., values diversity), and 3) the extent …

Migration Patterns, Habitat Use, Prey Items, And Hunter Harvest Of Long-Tailed Ducks (Clangula Hyemalis) That Overwinter On Lake Michigan, Luke J. Fara

Theses

The long-tailed duck (Clangula hyemalis; hereafter LTDU) breeds on the arctic tundra across Alaska and Canada and winters south of the ice edge along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, as well as on the Great Lakes. Data suggest that LTDU populations are in decline and, as a result, efforts have been made to better understand their population distributions through satellite telemetry studies. Radio-marked LTDUs from previous studies have shown very little use of Lake Michigan, even though aerial surveys indicate that large concentrations of this species overwinter there. LTDUs using Lake Michigan face a host of conservation issues, such as …

Assessing Tribal College Priorities For Enhancing Climate Adaptation On Reservation Lands, Helen M. Fillmore, Loretta Singletary, John Phillips May 2018

Assessing Tribal College Priorities For Enhancing Climate Adaptation On Reservation Lands, Helen M. Fillmore, Loretta Singletary, John Phillips

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

On reservation lands, tribal colleges and universities (TCUs) are key to preparing indigenous communities to adapt to the effects of a changing climate. The original mission of TCUs, to improve access to higher education and to sustain the cultural heritage of indigenous people, facilitates close ties between TCU faculty and staff and the indigenous communities they serve. Since 1994, the land-grant status of TCUs allows access to limited federal funds in support of research, education, and outreach to improve food security, natural resource management, and rural quality of life, while expanding public access to higher education to underserved populations in …

Perspectives On Water Resources Among Anishinaabe And Non-Native Residents Of The Great Lakes Region, Andrew T. Kozich, Kathleen E. Halvorsen, Alex S. Mayer May 2018

Perspectives On Water Resources Among Anishinaabe And Non-Native Residents Of The Great Lakes Region, Andrew T. Kozich, Kathleen E. Halvorsen, Alex S. Mayer

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Climate change and human population growth could reduce household water availability in the historically water-rich Great Lakes region. It is critical to understand human-water relationships in advance of policy actions that could result from reduced water supplies. Research on household water conservation typically occurs in a reactionary nature, in settings that are already water-stressed. Furthermore, few studies involve Native American perspectives on this important topic. We used semi-structured interviews to assess residents' perspectives of Great Lakes water resources and views on household conservation, involving distinct samples of Native American and non-Native residents. Although interviewees deeply value the region's water resources, …

Navajo Nation, Usa, Precipitation Variability From 2002 To 2015, Crystal L. Tulley-Cordova, Courtenay Strong, Irving P. Brady, Jerome Bekis, Gabriel J. Bowen

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Due to its semi-arid climate, the Navajo Nation, situated in the southwestern United States, is sensitive to small changes in precipitation. However, little information on patterns and causes of rainfall variation is available for this sparsely populated region. In order to study stability and variability over time, this study characterized hydroclimatic changes for the Navajo Nation over timescales of months to years based on data from 90 sites from 2002 to 2015. This research will help local water managers identify related precipitation areas within the region, compare Navajo Nation precipitation with climate indices to ascertain larger-scale atmospheric contributors to precipitation …
