Portrayals Of Black Women On Television & The Shift In Their Representation: An Analysis Of Scandal & Insecure, Tyra Wooten
Portrayals Of Black Women On Television & The Shift In Their Representation: An Analysis Of Scandal & Insecure, Tyra Wooten
Research Papers
This paper is an in depth research that focuses on the experiences and representations of Black women in popular television shows like Scandal and Insecure. The research will show how these portrayals effect Black women in society and the impressions of Black women by the viewers of these television shows. Black women have always been the center of misrepresentations in television leading to limitations in character roles and appearances. These stereotypical roles effect how others look at Black women and it can also reflect on how Black women view themselves. The portrayals I will focus on will be stereotypes, …
Erg1a Potassium Channel Abundance Varies Within Specific Skeletal Muscle And Fiber Type, Luke Anderson
Erg1a Potassium Channel Abundance Varies Within Specific Skeletal Muscle And Fiber Type, Luke Anderson
Honors Theses
Skeletal muscle atrophy results from an imbalance of protein degradation and protein synthesis which produces a net loss of protein. This loss occurs mainly through the ubiquitin proteasome pathway (UPP). The ether-a-go-go related gene (ERG1A) is a voltage-gated K+ channel that is upregulated in atrophying skeletal muscle. Expression of ERG1A in skeletal muscle increases UPP activity and induces atrophy. Because ERG1A appears variably expressed in muscles composed of mixed fiber types and is a K+ channel which has the potential to modulate contraction speed by enhancing repolarization, we hypothesized that ERG1A would be more abundant in slow-twitch fibers …

Should Contact Recreation Water Quality Standards Be Consistent Across Hydrological Extremes?, Lucas F. Gregory, Anna Gitter, Stephen Muela, Kevin L. Wagner
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Water quality standards are developed to protect and define when waterbodies support their designated uses including public water supply, recreational use, aquatic life use, and others. Recreational use categories include various activities that typically do not occur under similar hydrologic conditions making protection of all uses challenging. This paper presents a case study where Escherichia coli concentrations were grouped by flow rate to demonstrate potential effects of developing use-specific water quality standards for contact recreation. Adopting this approach requires a shift from current water quality policy which applies to all hydrologic conditions; however, it also requires additional data collection on …

Groundwater Seeps: Portholes To Evaluate Groundwater's Influence On Stream Water Quality, Michael O'Driscoll, David Dewalle, Charles Humphrey, Guy Iverson
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Recent legal cases have suggested that contaminated seeps and/or springs that have measurable impacts on adjacent surface water quality may fall under the jurisdiction of the Clean Water Act (CWA). An improved understanding of the effects of groundwater seeps on surface water quality is needed to support the evolving legal and regulatory environment. Surface seeps or seepage zones are locations where upwelling groundwater saturates the surface. Seeps can provide groundwater that may be transported to nearby surface waters along surface and shallow subsurface flowpaths. From a water quality perspective, seeps can provide portholes to observe groundwater quality. Here we consider …
Innovative Medicine For Acl Repairs In Dogs, Megan Quinn
Innovative Medicine For Acl Repairs In Dogs, Megan Quinn
Honors Theses
The acronym ACL, more commonly CCL, stands for the Anterior (Cranial) Cruciate Ligament; the word cruciate means "to cross over" or "form a cross". There are two cruciate ligaments in the knee: the anterior cruciate ligament and the caudal cruciate ligament. These fibrous ligaments located within the knee join the femur and the tibia together allowing the knee to function as a hinged joint. The most common orthopedic injury in dogs is a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament. This ligament typically ruptures during daily activities due to non-traumatic degeneration of the cranial cruciate ligament over time. Cranial cruciate disease …
Development And Validation Of New Models And Metrics For The Assessments Of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss, Wisam Subhi Talib Al-Dayyeni
Development And Validation Of New Models And Metrics For The Assessments Of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss, Wisam Subhi Talib Al-Dayyeni
Dissertations
Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is one of the most common illnesses that is frequently reported in the occupational and military sectors. Hearing loss due to high noise exposure is a major health problem with economic consequences. Industrial and military noise exposures often contain high-level impulsive noise components. The presence of these impulsive noise components complicates the assessment of noise levels for hearing conservation purposes. The current noise guidelines use equal energy hypothesis (EEH) based metrics to evaluate the risk of hearing loss. A number of studies show that the current noise metrics often underestimates the risk of hearing loss in …
Environmental Heterogeneity Effects On Diversity And Nitrous Oxide Emissions From Soil In Restored Prairie, Drew Austin Scott
Environmental Heterogeneity Effects On Diversity And Nitrous Oxide Emissions From Soil In Restored Prairie, Drew Austin Scott
Dissertations
Ecological theory predicts that high environmental heterogeneity causes high biodiversity. Theory further predicts that more biodiversity results in greater ecosystem functioning. These theoretical predictions were evaluated in three studies using grassland restorations from agriculture.
Oil Dependency And National Food Security: A Case For Nigeria, Alexandra A. Akaakar
Oil Dependency And National Food Security: A Case For Nigeria, Alexandra A. Akaakar
Theses
Food insecurity is a condition of insufficient access to quality nutritious food; it is often rooted in shocks that interrupt the food production/distribution system in an area. Amidst the capabilities of Nigeria's agricultural system, the number of households across Nigeria experiencing food shortages has increased rapidly. The main reason for this increase were price shocks. This incident highlighted a huge vulnerability in Nigeria's food system, the vulnerability to price shocks. Incidences such as poverty and conflicts magnify the frequency of food insecurity. The ability to reduce vulnerabilities while addressing existing issues in food production and supply depends on a stable …

Act-Based Statements Effect On Bartending Tips, Mariah Patz
Theses
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a behaviorally-based intervention that emphasizes psychological processes related to mindfulness, values, committed actions towards values, defusion from troubling thoughts, and acceptance. ACT is often used with populations who experience psychological inflexibility or stress, but not much research has been done understanding how ACT processes may affect everyday tasks within the common public or within business practices. The present study used a randomized controlled trial to determine the effect that statements related to ACT processes given while receiving a bar tending service altered the outcome tipping percentage from guests. The current research also discussed how …
Conservation And Caffeine: The History Of Coffee Tourism And Sustainability In Costa Rica, Kelsey Smith
Conservation And Caffeine: The History Of Coffee Tourism And Sustainability In Costa Rica, Kelsey Smith
Honors Theses
Costa Rican coffee has had a long reputation for being some of the most flavorful coffee on the planet. However, it took many years for Costa Rica to establish itself as a coffee producing country, and many more years to develop sustainable coffee-growing systems. Out of the ruins of exploitation by the United Fruit Company, Costa Rica has built up a booming and sustainable agritourism industry, and coffee has played an integral role in its success. While there are many benefits and drawbacks to agritourism, Costa Rican farmers have managed to make every step of coffee production, from growing to …

Museum specimens play an increasingly important role in predicting the outcomes and revealing the consequences of anthropogenically driven disruption of the biosphere. As ecological communities respond to ongoing environmental change, host-parasite interactions are also altered. This shifting landscape of host-parasite associations creates opportunities for colonization of different hosts and emergence of new pathogens, with implications for wildlife conservation and management, public health, and other societal concerns. Integrated archives that document and preserve mammal specimens along with their communities of associated parasites and ancillary data provide a powerful resource for investigating, anticipating, and mitigating the epidemiological, ecological, and evolutionary impacts of …
Price Determinants Of Recreational Land In Illinois, Cameron Hupp
Price Determinants Of Recreational Land In Illinois, Cameron Hupp
Research Papers
It’s no secret that Illinois farmland is extremely expensive and has been on a steady rise for the past several decades. The highly sought after features of many different pieces of Illinois farmland coupled with the favorable growing climate found in Illinois translates to advantageous yields and potential for substantial revenues for farmers and landowners. Although prices have remained relatively stagnant throughout the past few years, it can be inferred that the long-term trend of farmland value will continue its path trending upward. With this being said, the margin for profit will become even slimmer and the ag real estate …

Analysis Of Human Mitochondrial Dna Content By Southern Blotting And Nonradioactive Probe Hybridization., Joel H Wheeler, Carolyn K J Young, Matthew J Young
Articles
A single cell can contain several thousand copies of the mitochondrial DNA genome or mtDNA. Tools for assessing mtDNA content are necessary for clinical and toxicological research, as mtDNA depletion is linked to genetic disease and drug toxicity. For instance, mtDNA depletion syndromes are typically fatal childhood disorders that are characterized by severe declines in mtDNA content in affected tissues. Mitochondrial toxicity and mtDNA depletion have also been reported in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients treated with certain nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. Further, cell culture studies have demonstrated that exposure to oxidative stress stimulates mtDNA degradation. Here we outline a Southern …

Waste Motor Oil (Wmo) To Diesel Fuel Project, Blaine M. Heisner
Presentations
Our research project will increase the sustainability of the University by re-purposing a waste product, used motor oil, into a usable commodity, diesel fuel. SIUC generates thousands of gallons of used motor oil each year, with each gallon incurring a disposal cost. We will now be able to reconstruct this waste into a usable fuel for our vehicles, saving the University a substantial amount of both disposal fees and fuel costs. Students will be involved with the collection, processing, and testing phases of this project. Through the Green Fund program, we can now capitalize on this unique opportunity to promote …

Making Peace With The Highwood River: One Year In Contemplative Photographs And Flows, Jennifer Markides
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
Since the 2013 Alberta floods, my relationship with the Highwood River has been changing. Before the disaster, I had taken the power of the river for granted. Then, the floodwaters ravaged the community of High River—my home. In the time after the flood, I engaged in a study of place as part of a course in Holistic Approaches to Life and Living led by Elder, Bob Cardinal of the Maskekosihk Enoch Cree Nation. I observed the flows through my camera lens: visiting and re-visiting the river, observing the seasonal changes, forming a stronger connection to my place in the community, …

The Human Ortholog Of Archaeal Pus10 Produces Pseudouridine 54 In Select Trnas Where Its Recognition Sequence Contains A Modified Residue., Manisha Deogharia, Shaoni Mukhopadhyay, Archi Joardar, Ramesh Gupta
Articles
The nearly conserved U54 of tRNA is mostly converted to a version of ribothymidine (T) in Bacteria and eukaryotes and to a version of pseudouridine (Ψ) in Archaea. Conserved U55 is nearly always modified to Ψ55 in all organisms. Orthologs of TrmA and TruB that produce T54 and Ψ55, respectively, in Bacteria and eukaryotes are absent in Archaea. Pus10 produces both Ψ54 and Ψ55 in Archaea. Pus10 orthologs are found in nearly all sequenced archaeal and most eukaryal genomes, but not in yeast and bacteria. This coincides with the presence of Ψ54 in most archaeal tRNAs and some animal tRNAs, …

Comparison Of Heparg Cells Following Growth In Proliferative And Differentiated Culture Conditions Reveals Distinct Bioenergetic Profiles., Carolyn K J Young, Matthew J Young
Articles
HepaRG is a proliferative human hepatoma-derived cell line that can be differentiated into hepatocyte-like and biliary-like cells. Differentiated HepaRG cultures maintain key hepatic functions including drug transporters and xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes. To gain insight into proliferative and differentiated HepaRG metabolism we profiled various bioenergetic parameters and investigated cell culture levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), lactate, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity. Compared to differentiated-derived HepaRG, cells from proliferative cultures had increased basal and ATP-linked respiration and decreased maximal and spare respiratory capacities. Basal ATP levels but not lactate or LDH activity were increased in samples from proliferative-derived compared to differentiated-derived HepaRG. Further …

The Value Of Green Water Management In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Review, Clever Mafuta
The Value Of Green Water Management In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Review, Clever Mafuta
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Due to its multiple uses, water is a highly competed-for resource. While the competition is mainly in the use of the resource, contestation over water resources is also demonstrated through how the resource is defined and described. Terms such as water stress and water scarcity are commonly used in literature, and so are various colors that define water quality, including white, grey, yellow, and black water. Water that is useful for agriculture is distinctly known as blue or green water, with the latter increasingly gaining prominence in water planning for improved agricultural productivity. Proper management of green water has been …
Food Security As A Water Grand Challenge, Courage Bangira
Food Security As A Water Grand Challenge, Courage Bangira
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Perhaps the biggest challenge the world faces is providing sufficient, nutritious, and safe food at the right time for its ever-increasing population. Considering current world population growth trends, it is estimated that the global population will be about 10 billion by the year 2050. Therefore, food production should at least double in the same period if food security is to be satisfied. Water and land resources play a pivotal role in agriculture and directly connect to food security. At the same time, the capacity to produce food is constrained by global climate changes and increased pressure on land resources. These …

Water Chemistry During Baseflow Helps Inform Watershed Management: A Case Study Of The Lake Wister Watershed, Oklahoma, Bradley J. Austin, Steve Patterson, Brian E. Haggard
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution from agricultural and urban development is a primary source of nutrients and decreased water quality in aquatic systems. Installation of best management practices (BMPs) within critical source areas of the watershed can be helpful at reducing the transport of nutrients to waterbodies; however, prioritizing these areas may be difficult. The objective of this study was to develop several potential frameworks for prioritizing subwatersheds using baseflow water chemistry data in relation to a simple human development index (HDI; total percent agriculture and urban development). At a monthly interval, samples were collected at 26 sites throughout the Oklahoma …
Grey Water: Agricultural Use Of Reclaimed Water In California, Bahman Sheikh, Kara L. Nelson, Brent Haddad, Anne Thebo
Grey Water: Agricultural Use Of Reclaimed Water In California, Bahman Sheikh, Kara L. Nelson, Brent Haddad, Anne Thebo
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Potential for use of recycled water is great, especially for agricultural irrigation, which comprises by far the highest percentage of water taken from developed sources in the arid and semi-arid regions of the world. In California, 80% of developed water is used for agriculture, and the same pattern prevails throughout the western United States. The potential for recycled water use in agriculture remains under-realized because of numerous impediments. Understanding how the incentives and impediments to agricultural reuse vary based on local context is critical to understanding the tradeoffs and technology requirements for different end uses of recycled water. Public perceptions …
